    This is my favorite movie of all time (so far) Laura Dern is incredible in Inland Empire and I believe she deserved an Oscar nomination for her performance. 🐄 Lynch tells this story so beautifully, I almost couldn’t believe it was a real thing on my first viewing! More Things That Happened is imperative. I’m so jazzed about this release! 🎥

      Hello, Diane! Inland Empire was such a wonderful discovery for me. Really enjoyed this film and the supplements do a nice job of shedding light on Lynch’s filmmaking approach and style and what it’s like as an actor working on one of his fims. Look forward to revisiting this one and picking up details I missed. A lot to sink your teeth into for sure! Have a great Monday!

    Have not seen this yet but I am a big fan of Lynch. Especially of his more grounded films like Elephant Man and The Straight Story because as abstract as he can be, he has a strong grasp and understanding of human emotion and love.

      @20thand21stMovies  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed. Well said regarding Lynch’s handling of emotion and love in his films. The humanity displayed in the treatment of The Elephant Man material is a good example, as you mentioned.

    Great vid dude. Had to order Inland Empire and Twin Peaks which, neither I had. Mulholland Drive...one of my absolute favorites as is Lost Highway. Own both the 4K Criterions. I've got to, at some point, do an episode on Lynch films. He's hands down one of THE greatest auteur filmmakers of all time in my opinion.

    Greetings James! Many thanks for the superb account of this David Lynch film that I have yet to have the opportunity to view. My first Lynch film was Blue Velvet which I viewed in the theatre upon its release. Another favourite Lynch film is Wild At Heart featuring Laura Dern and Nicolas Cage. I'm very glad that the director was able to cobble this movie together free of studio interference and the concept is intriguing. We can all self-identify with Dern's character as wondering if we can revisit former peaks in our careers. I was especially taken with Lynch's Oscar promotion of Dern's performance!!! My own most recent viewing experience was the 1993 television film, Sharpe's Rifles, directed by Tom Clegg and featuring Sean Bean, Assumpta Serna, and Brian Cox. The first of 14 films taken from Bernard Cromwell's Napoleonic novels, it features Sharpe, a British soldier who is promoted from the ranks for saving the life of General Wellington in Spain. Bean is superb in the title role as the hard-boiled but decent protagonist. His character is promoted to lieutenant and he's in charge of a riflemen squad. Much initial conflict gives way to respect. My most recent film acquisition is 2020's feature documentary, Crip Camp, directed by Nicole Newnham and James Lebrecht. Thanks again for the terrific video and enjoy the remainder of your Saturday!

      Greetings, Chris, and glad you enjoyed this review of Lynch’s Inland Empire on Criterion. It’s a bit tough to follow what’s going on but overall a rewarding experience watching the film and going through the supplements.
      I have not seen Wild At Heart so will need to add that Lynch title to my watchlist and I’ve never heard of Sharpe’s Rifles so I’ll need to look that one up.

    I'll tell you, back in college(90s) I was obsessed with Lynch films and art. I found copy of script for lost highway that really just made that film so understandable. It was amazing. I would love a collection of his scripts. Oh, and his photography...👍👍

    James, I mean this wholeheartedly, you do the best physical media release reviews (most notably when it comes to criterion) on the TH-cam platform. Most folk go ahead & say “So yeah you got this this & that”, but you go so much more in depth with insight about the filmmaking. I just love hearing you talk.
    Also wanted to give a side note just because I didn’t hear ya mention it, but did you know that the short film Rabbits that has bits included in Inland Empire all stars the cast of Mulholland Drive? Very cool little fun fact I think!

    I saw this one in a theatre when it came out in 2006. Even as a Lynch fan, this was a though film to sit out, perhaps because of the runtime. For me, with Lynch's films, it's not about the narrative or even about the mystery and wanting to complete the puzzle, it's more about sitting back and getting sucked in that dark atmosphere. Good review.

    I'm most interested in seeing this film's 4K restoration understanding it came from an old grainy 480p video camera.
    I don't talk about it much, but I am a photographer myself and own 3 different AI programs made by Topaz Labworks. Which includes a image sharpening program, image denoising program, and an image enlarging program.
    So when I first heard about the restoration and how that a David Lynch film was using the same program that I own and used... I became immediately interested in seeing it and how it looks. As I know the weird quirks that the software has and the flaws that it has to offer. So I'm curious if I can spot those wonky flaws in different frames of this release. It's honestly the main reason on why I bought it.

    • @20thand21stMovies
      @20thand21stMovies  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, Magnitude Rev! It would have been nice to see a feature or supplement that talked about how this film was shot and it’s restoration journey. The AI and Topaz aspect sounds really interesting. Of course given the film was shot in SD there is only so much that current AI tech can do with that source to approximate a HD picture. All in all, I think the picture looked pretty good on this blu-ray.
