Why I'm Leaving Mallorca

  • When I was moving to Mallorca 6.5 years ago, I planned to stay for 3-4 years and then move on. The moment the pandemic hit and things didn't go back "to normal" after the quarantine, I knew that I would have to stay for another year. With the slow vaccination and recurring restrictions, one year turned into two.
    I can't complain about it because I had everything I needed. Even though the beginning was hard, I built a beautiful lifestyle with time. I made many friends, worked hard, explored the island, and started this channel this year. I made unforgettable memories.
    But my drive to explore new places and learn new things didn't go away. It's still deep within me craving more experiences. In this video, I'm explaining why I'm leaving Mallorca and hope that my motives and perspectives can inspire you to introduce the changes you want to make.

    I am Mallorcan but I understand your point of view. After all, Mallorca is a small island, although it has everything to live on. Whenever I leave the island for periods of weeks or months I feel nostalgic for my island, "sa Roqueta" as we Mallorcans say. The longest period I have been outside of Mallorca was exactly 3 months, during which time I was in Ireland to immerse myself in an English-speaking place.
    The important thing is not to regret the decisions you make.

      Gracias por tu perspectiva Flavio. Yes, the island has everything to live on, I agree. It always depends on what you want and in which phase of your life you find yourself. Absolutely, the most important thing is to live a life without regrets. Abrazo

    I moved there in 2012, had my daughter there, but due to the Pandemic was forced to leave in 2021 :( I wish we could return, but right now, I need to be in the UK where the economy is better for us. I absolutely LOVE the island, but I felt my career was stagnating, so perhaps it was the push I needed.

    • @patrickvogel
      @patrickvogel  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I understand Emma. 9 years is a long time. Don't be sad that it is over, be grateful because it happened :) I've heard that so often from people living on the island after around 5+ years "I feel I'm stagnating here". Usually, you have two groups:
      1. The tourists enjoying their time using the money they've made somewhere else
      2. The locals working in businesses to serve the tourists.
      There is not much in between. It is hard to make money on the island outside the tourist bubble. You can always go to visit :) cheers!

    I also recently left Mallorca after six plus years. Sounds like you got a bit bored of the place. It´s a beautiful island, but I certainly did start to get fed up with certain things after about 2-3 years there. Well, there is a whole world out there, so enjoy your travels!

    • @patrickvogel
      @patrickvogel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting. We spent pretty much the same time there Queen Bee. Yes, it's true. I got bored with the time. I think it happens to many people. I agree with you, I think living there for 2-4 years can be enough, depends on the person and stage of life. Thank you so much! All the best to you as well!

    • @QueenBee-mk8xm
      @QueenBee-mk8xm ปีที่แล้ว

      @@patrickvogel Thank you. Yes, exactly. It does happen and it all depends on where you are at and what you need and your personality as well :) When I moved there, I thought I was going to live there forever. But I outgrew the place pretty fast. After about maybe 2.5 to 3 years, my eyes were opened to things that I realized were not by chance or once in a while, but that are ingrained and that would not change anytime soon and it took me a long time to accept that and make the decision to stop trying to live there. I may be back for a short visit, but that will be it.

      @@QueenBee-mk8xm Hi, could you tell me what you mean by the things that you couldn´t change? I am an expat in Alicante (living here for 4 years now), and I wonder if I can relate, living in another city, but also in Spain.

    • @QueenBee-mk8xm
      @QueenBee-mk8xm ปีที่แล้ว

      @@maderein Hi, that´s interesting, because I am considering moving to Alicante! It would be great to have your views on living in Alicante as an expat. I went there a couple of months ago and really liked it. The main thing that made me think of moving there, was that the people were nice and friendly and had manners. This is unfortunately very rare in Mallorca. What I meant by the things that I could not change is mainly that, the high level of disrespect that has become so pervasive there. I encountered it literally everywhere I went all day long as soon as I left my apartment. However, it is sort of 50:50. So you can have one very rude and aggressive person that you come across (aggressive driver, waiter, bus driver, shop assistant, anyone) and then the next one could be nice or at least not rude, but 50% is very high compared to pretty much everywhere I have ever lived, and I´ve lived in quite few countries. The norm I would say would be that you maybe have one or two bad experiences in a week, not several in one day every time you go out of your home, but that is Mallorca. There is a very negative culture of disrespect that has developed and while many locals are highly xenophobic, ofcourse not all are, but it has a large effect on how you feel living there. Also, many expats who have lived there for a while start to adopt disrespectful attitudes and behaviours because it´s become normalized to shout for no good reason, swear at pedestrians, not follow rules or laws, and generally think that you are entitled to act however you like. I left quite a while ago now, but when I think about it, the same feelings arise. Beautiful place to look at, but ugly at the same time.

    • @patrickvogel
      @patrickvogel  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@WitsEnds You can use idealista and fotocasa. And then there is badi for shared apartments. Apart from that, you can look what agencies have. Not sure if you need a Spanish bank account. depends on the owner I guess. But there are many foreigners renting, I doubt that they all pay with a Spanish bank account. Hope this was helpful

    Hi Patrick, thank you for sharing your experiences about living in (and leaving) Mallorca. I am in a process choosing either Mallorca or Tenerife. I really feel a pull towards Mallorca and would love to connect with someone living there (I have contacted some but didn't get any answer in return) to ask a few questions that I cannot find answers to online and via offices. Now I'm just taking the chance to ask you, if you happen to know anyone, or if I may contact you? Maybe not the usual thing to comment here :-) I wish you all the best for your journey, and to put another quote "Don't go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail" (Mark Twain) :-) Take care and enjoy it all to the fullest. Many greetings, Caroline

    I find your video,absolutely great! Is like you were reading my mind! I moved to Australia 🇦🇺 from Hawaii! Yes! Hawaii! And I used to live in Miami,Chicago,Colombia! Everybody thinks that places like Hawaii or Miami, are like paradise on earth,but No,they’re not! Hawaii,is like a third world country! Full of fools & violent locals! Miami is almost the same thing!( Now a very spencer place).Very soon,I’m becoming an Australian citizen,and yes,I got pull to a comfort zone! With a wife; an apartment,a dog,a car,etc. But I find myself looking through the same window every day & every night! @ night I always dream that I’m travelling somewhere! I don’t know where,but I’m travelling! I wish you the best with your life!❤❤❤

      Thank you for sharing Fabio. I don't see anything bad about your lifestyle / current situation. If you love where you are and like your surroundings and everything that comes with it, that's great! And getting out of your comfort zone doesn't have to be travelling or moving to another country again. As I've seen you already did it often. But you know better. It can be something small as well. E.g. a new challenge at work or a new hobby. Learning something new. Australia 🌏🦘 is a great country. It's amazing that you achieved to build a life for yourself over there. Cheers!
