My Pixel 7's sensor regularly fails to recognize my fingerprint if my finger is slightly wet or something, and I really miss the swipe-down-for-notifications thing.
Its one of my favorite things on my Z Fold 4, the fingerprint being on the side. I hate on screen scanners, and prefer side mounted over back, but they both have that gesture to pull down the notification tray.
I ironically have the opposite problem with my pixel 7, it can recognize my fingerprint even after dunking my hands in water but if I try to unlock it when my hands are dry it has a hard time recognizing my finger, only to work again if i get my finger slightly moist again. I live in a humid area so what I think happened is that I enrolled my fingerprint while my fingers were moist and now it has an easier time unlocking it while it is moist rather than it being dry. I'm sure that if I register two fingerprints of the same finger, one in a humid and one in a dry environment I could get it to unlock every time.
A note about pixels one hand mode : the double tap on the back is not the only option to bring down the notification tray. There's a gesture to bring it down by swiping down on the "gesture zone" at the bottom of the screen.

I had a wing, and it was honestly my favorite phone that I've ever had. I'll grant that the dual screen was a little gimmicky, and it wasn't something that was wholly useful all the time, but I definitely used it daily. Being able to use it as a full sized keyboard while doing lots of texting or writing was great. It was as useful as having two monitors on a desktop in many situations. I accidentally crunched the phone's main screen to the point that it was 100% dead and I was able to get through the next few days on the smaller display sending texts and making calls. Only reason I didn't replace it with another wing was that LG has given up on it (and my phone replacement program only offered me a Pixel 6 pro).

On Pixel 6 you can access the notifications by swiping down on the navigation bar. To enable this feature you need to switch the one-handed mode from pulling down the screen to showing notifications instead
I legitimately think the LG Wing isn't dumb. It's made so that not only do you not have to change your grip to use the phone for correctly filmed (landscape) fullscreen videos AND you get some extra screen space for something else.
my local grocery store use to let you pay at the self checkout after clicking "pay now" but now they make you then also select "pay with card". The first day it was introduced (first day I used it) I ended up swiping my card 4 times befor I could figure it out.

Pixel Hack- miss the swipe down on the back fingerprint reader? Then use Quick Tap Gesture. Just double tap on the back of the phone and it drops down the notification tray.
The note 9 also had the fingerprint reader on the back that you could swipe up or down on for your apps or system tray. I also loved just having it unlocked already when I pulled my phone out of my pocket. I'm still sad it was removed from my s22 ultra
I went from a Note 8 to the S23 Ultra and have the same feeling. It's one of just the few things I dislike about the S23 Ultra, otherwise it's great. I wish they stuck with a rear-mounted reader.
I had one of thoes... the cellular died, the phone creeks in portrait mode if you press to hard, and the bottom screen will scratched if any dust get in-between
Things Linus needs to remember is this was the first of its kind when it comes to software, its older and its not what he's used to. For example I don't see the fingerprint thing as a probelm if anything that's where my hand would go. The wing is super interesting because imo I'd rather have that than a fold because of the screen durability issues (I've had 4 Samsung filps so I know how bad they can be). The screen sliding also fits better with how I hold my phone vs a fold (its the reason I have a flip not a fold) and I imagine got alot of things im thinking navagation this will just work better.
I'm still using an LG V30+. MicroSD card expandable storage, dedicated fingerprint reader on the back, built-in DAC... So good! I actually decided to 'upgrade' to a Pixel 6a for the better camera in anticipation of an overseas holiday, but I ended up returning it the same day as I hated missing those features I listed above.
Just wanted to point out something about the Pixel's double back tap gesture. I get why Luke's angry that it it accelerometer-based however it works even when the phone has a case. I had no idea that my Pixel 6 Pro had this feature and when I found it I was afraid my QuadLock case might prevent using it, however it works seamlessly, and that's a pretty beefy case because of the mounting point
I can appreciate that LG is willing to try new things. If I remember right, they were the first ones to do the "knock" double tap thing to turn on your screen, as opposed to hitting a button. I bought an LG phone at one point specifically to have that feature. And now that I have it on my S21, I couldn't live without it on a smartphone
I also loved my lg wing. I was constantly watching TH-cam on the main screen while playing runescape on the small one. Or having navigation up on the main screen while using media controls on the small one. The wing allowed for basically all the same multitasking as the fold does without having the constant screen issues the fold does. Don't get me wrong I use a fold now, but just because I broke my wing and couldn't get it replaced via insurance.
I have one of those, even that division closed, it is still receiving os updates mine has android 13 and it's surprisingly smooth and fast, I love using it one hand with in T form and using TikTok on main screen while chatting Whatsapp on the small screen both working perfectly smooth with an almost 3 year old phone
This is my absolute fav phone i have ever owned, and is currently my on call backup phone if needed. When i worked for an insurance company doing same-day insurance replacement phones i would use this phone as a party trick to fascinate kids and curious people when i was waiting on activation or data transfer from old to new devices. the only reason i stopped using it was because the portion of the screen that controls the pulldown shade wouldnt work. the screen worked but the touch didnt register that far up. Now im using an S22 Ultra and its great and all, but i still love my LG Wing!
LG G2 and G4 were top tier best flagships of the time. They still made great phones after it's just unfortunate poor mistakes. I wish they still made phones. Even a remade phone in the semi body of the LG G2 would be great. Phone makers like LG and Motorola had some better ideas than what we have today with Samsung/Apple, sadly they lost their way and we have less competition now
The G4 was the first phone I was able to choose myself (I was given my dad's iPhone 4 before that), and I loved it. Sad day when I fell off my bike mount at 90km/h without a case... lol
The reason I stopped getting pixel phones, can't swipe fingerprint sensor for notifications... The switch to Pixel 2XL was painful enough that I switched to 3A immediately after release just to get back the headphone jack, the 4A was peak Pixel.
With all his remarks of how slippery the phone is he could be building up to a whole story: Dropping it within a few days of useage, "Oh no it's broken! I wish it could be easily repaired!" Then maybe a repair attempt that fails... And in comes the Fairphone example for repairability to save the day! Perfect transition to the 2nd ranking phone, the one he was actually wanting to try in the first place. I just hope that then, the Wing actually turns out to be repairable, meaning Linus would have to keep using it
Id prefer this turn of events. The Wing is just stupid, and the fact a much better phone like the Fairphone was passed on because the community was like "he he meme lol" is dumb as all hell. So the turn of events you described would be the perfect win win scenario. Especially given that only one of those phones is getting a the "review" treatment and the Wing shouldn't be it.
Man like Luke I was hopeful for a sec about the back "pull down for notifications" gesture, but like he said you actually need to *bash it* for it to register the double tap
Linus once said he sometimes watches videos on youtube holding his phone in portrait because the ergonomics are better, but somehow he doesnt see a benefit here
I've had this phone for about a year now and I mainly use the swivel feature for 1) TH-cam: makes it easier to eat while holding it and you can control settings [very specific, I know] 2) if you rotate it upside down while typing the keyboard moves to the bigger screen and the document you are typing goes to the small and lower square one [great for last second discussion posts lol] 3) multitasking, I'm sure other phones can do it better but for me folding phones are too big/expensive so to have youtube/google/twitch on the larger screen and texting/google/notepad on the other it works really great and I find it natural. But I gotta be honest I've never used that gimble camera feature, there is another camera feature which levels your shot and the focus stays locked keeping the controls off the screen which I found great but some people might not. One thing that I wish they explored more was including a gamepad app for the lower screen for any game you have on the larger one, that just seems like a no brainer to me. There was a community app that did this but it has been broken for some time and there hasn't been any fixes lol, but its such a great match for the unique double screen feature that it surprises me that they didn't do it. Anyways great phone, I highly reccommended if you are into unique phones. Going from apple to this is a ginormous upgrade in my opinion haha.
I had a wing and loved it. Was it goofy, yes did the 2nd screen do anything, not really. But it was rock solid and never had a problem. Also liked the fact that the front camera would hide if it felt it was being dropped.
I think a better form factor would have been to have the top half slide down in landcape mode to reveal a slightly smaller display ao you could have a leyboard and fullscreen landscap app, or use it in portrait mode to just have two apps fullscreen. Thats basically all of thw benefit of a foldable without the super brittle plastic display that costs hundreds to replace.
LUKE the accellerometer bashing thing has a setting you can click to require stronger taps, in case you find that its randomly activating, but in my experience, it doesnt really accidentally activate, plus, the fact that it isnt a touch surface means you can have a case that doesnt have a hole in it
The camera app on that is great for vlogging, since it lets you record with both the front & rear cameras simultaneously, and you can choose whether to save the two footages separately or together as either split-screen or PiP. You'll need to have it swiveled open in order to use "Dual Recording" mode.
I had a LG wing when it came out my galaxy died and it looked interesting so i got with the upgrade they offered it was great for watching movies while texting
I've got a Wing since it first came out and I'm still using it. I actually use the second screen relatively frequent. I've grown so used to it that it's hard for me to want to switch to something else. The foldable phones are different and just too expensive
The LG G5 was Super. The LG V20 i have still works fine. Despite me dropping it into the bath tub. Twice. I would have LOVED the Wing if it had not been that expensive and mine still worked -.- It's good for media consumption with the wide screen and you can still type on the lower part.
I still have and use my LG V20 but only with Wi-Fi, thanks T-Mobile for bricking all LG phones for a while and claiming that my phone's too old to get the update. Proves you can have a well-built feeling and have easily swappable batteries though.
Oh my gosh thank you, Luke so much for bringing up the loss of the back fingerprint sensor and gesture pad. When i bought my previous phone, being able to swipe on the back fingerprint sensor was a requirement for me for a new phone at the time and now the feature is basically gone TT
I didn't come to watch this video because of the ergonomics thing but until this video I didn't realize why on earth I was having so many issues using my phone. Now everything makes sense. Thank you Linus for highlighting this issue. Maybe this needs to be brought into wider attention.
Watching this on my daily driven LG Wing. Getting a case makes it easier to swivel. TH-cam on the top screen while my slack chat on the lower screen. It's a great phone
About the "swipe down for notifications on fingerprint", you can just do that using an automation app like tasker or macrodroid. It only takes a one-time setup, and it works forever.
can confirm, the double tap thing on pixels is atrocious. i have it set to torch and when it's pitch black and i need a torch, i can never get it to turn on, but when i'm in public and casually using my phone, it just randomly turns on and makes it look like i'm taking a picture
4:26 That's why people like myself and Linus needs to go with the Sony 21:9 aspect ratio Xperia phones FOR ONE HAND USE (still cannot reach the top of the phone but overall usability improves a lot)
I had one of the old LG original T shaped phone, the LG VX9400. It had a built in extendable TV tuner for this weird LG live TV subscription back in 2007. I loved to flick the screen open.
I have this phone and used it for over a year already. I live in the UK and somehow thankfully when i bought the south korean version from aliexpress for £240 it works with my networks and been daily driving it no problem.
6:02 I still say rear mounted fingerprint sensors are superior to in screen fingerprint sensors not only because its just at a much more natural position but also because it is another input gesture that you can easily use
I will have to agree, the Blackberry Priv was one of the BEST form-factors I've used in recent years, I would absolutely LOVE a modern version of the Priv!
There's a setting hidden somewhere in the Pixel settings that lets you swipe down on the gesture bar to bring down the notification shade anywhere! I used to have a Pixel 5 and loved the fingerprint swipe, so when I upgraded to a Pixel 7 I had to find a replacement fidget gesture. Sadly I don't remember the name of the setting
T9 dialing - the default behaviour is what Linus is ranting about. Happens the same with Samsung too. It's just that the gesture to call/text is a Samsung exclusive thing.
You'd think LG would have issues with their swiveling screen but if you remember they made the Sidekick back in the day and everyone's screens came off. So, they've learned since then.
The LG Wing is kinda the final evolution of 2010s Japanese/Korean flip phones. Those sometimes had screens that would rotate widescreen making browsing mobile internet a lot better. I only learned about their existence because the protagonist in the game "SMT: Devil Survivor 2" used one and it was the weirdest lookin thing to me.
If LG was still in the phone market, I probably wouldn't have an iPhone right now. I miss my G6. It also had the fingerprint sensor on the back and it was just so nice. Dunno about the swiping thing though.

But that isn't where your hand would go... didn't you see him show how he needed to move his entire arm in order to touch the scanner
@@SchmulyCareful, communication with alien species can lead to being probed.
I loved my LG G3 and used that thing for years.
You can hear the excitement in Linus’s voice over this phone.
Emulating games should be so good on this. Like DS games
Phone makers like LG and Motorola had some better ideas than what we have today with Samsung/Apple, sadly they lost their way and we have less competition now
I legit loved my G3 until the screen melted itself from the inside 😢
I loved my g2
The G4 was the first phone I was able to choose myself (I was given my dad's iPhone 4 before that), and I loved it. Sad day when I fell off my bike mount at 90km/h without a case... lol
The G4 would have been nicer if it didn't have the infamous bootloop issue.
Had a G2 and and G6 which lasted me 3 good years till i upgraded. Could still use it today if i had to
Such a nice phone
The reason I stopped getting pixel phones, can't swipe fingerprint sensor for notifications...
The switch to Pixel 2XL was painful enough that I switched to 3A immediately after release just to get back the headphone jack, the 4A was peak Pixel.
The double tap on the back works really well once you get how to do it properly, very rarely triggered when i don't want to
With all his remarks of how slippery the phone is he could be building up to a whole story:
Dropping it within a few days of useage, "Oh no it's broken! I wish it could be easily repaired!" Then maybe a repair attempt that fails... And in comes the Fairphone example for repairability to save the day! Perfect transition to the 2nd ranking phone, the one he was actually wanting to try in the first place.
I just hope that then, the Wing actually turns out to be repairable, meaning Linus would have to keep using it
Honestly would piss me off If that happened
Id prefer this turn of events. The Wing is just stupid, and the fact a much better phone like the Fairphone was passed on because the community was like "he he meme lol" is dumb as all hell. So the turn of events you described would be the perfect win win scenario. Especially given that only one of those phones is getting a the "review" treatment and the Wing shouldn't be it.
Man like Luke I was hopeful for a sec about the back "pull down for notifications" gesture, but like he said you actually need to *bash it* for it to register the double tap
Linus once said he sometimes watches videos on youtube holding his phone in portrait because the ergonomics are better, but somehow he doesnt see a benefit here
I do pinky on bottom like Linus
Oh my god. I have to do "pinky under" as well. Just realized. Hahaha.
LUKE the accellerometer bashing thing has a setting you can click to require stronger taps, in case you find that its randomly activating, but in my experience, it doesnt really accidentally activate, plus, the fact that it isnt a touch surface means you can have a case that doesnt have a hole in it
challenge accepted and regret was immediate. well done all around
I wish I bought one of these. As someone who watches TH-cam. The idea of being able to watch a video landscape but have a secure handhold on it
The camera app on that is great for vlogging, since it lets you record with both the front & rear cameras simultaneously, and you can choose whether to save the two footages separately or together as either split-screen or PiP.
You'll need to have it swiveled open in order to use "Dual Recording" mode.
Also, I wanna see Linus play Asphalt 9 on this
I had a LG wing when it came out my galaxy died and it looked interesting so i got with the upgrade they offered it was great for watching movies while texting
someone at LG woke up one morning and said, "I need to pitch this idea to the team, there's a lot people could use this form factor for"
I've got a Wing since it first came out and I'm still using it. I actually use the second screen relatively frequent. I've grown so used to it that it's hard for me to want to switch to something else. The foldable phones are different and just too expensive
Is this your main phone? How long do you think you'll use this phone going forward, into the future?
This has now taught me about the Quick Tap settings for my Pixel 8 Pro, thanks!
In settings you can set it to when you swipe down navigation pill it will open notification menu
The LG G5 was Super.
The LG V20 i have still works fine.
Despite me dropping it into the bath tub. Twice.
I would have LOVED the Wing if it had not been
that expensive and mine still worked -.-
It's good for media consumption with the wide
screen and you can still type on the lower part.
Hot take: pop up cameras need to come back. I dont take selfies so i dont need a hole in my screen all the time.
It only takes a one-time setup, and it works forever.
can confirm, the double tap thing on pixels is atrocious. i have it set to torch and when it's pitch black and i need a torch, i can never get it to turn on, but when i'm in public and casually using my phone, it just randomly turns on and makes it look like i'm taking a picture
the one handed mode in the gestures settings is an easier way to slide down notifications!
Thank you Luke for teaching me about the existence of the fingerprint swipe feature. My Pixel 5 feels a bit fresher again!
I loved it but too each their own.
I wish they made a second one
So happy we voted for this thing
I want a new pop up camera phone for soo long and finally someone who spotlights it again
I want LG back!!!!! been using them for years and years. Holding on to my velvet for as long as possible
4:26 That's why people like myself and Linus needs to go with the Sony 21:9 aspect ratio Xperia phones FOR ONE HAND USE (still cannot reach the top of the phone but overall usability improves a lot)
I can see one use case for the LG Wing, watch a youtube livestream on the wide screen and read chat on the other screen
I had one of the old LG original T shaped phone, the LG VX9400. It had a built in extendable TV tuner for this weird LG live TV subscription back in 2007. I loved to flick the screen open.
As someone with an Oppo with a pop up camera for 4 years and I don't think I can ever change
I have this phone and used it for over a year already. I live in the UK and somehow thankfully when i bought the south korean version from aliexpress for £240 it works with my networks and been daily driving it no problem.
I didn't know anything about that quick tap feature on my pixel 6 pro. I just dicovered it know, I guess you do learn something new every day.
6:02 I still say rear mounted fingerprint sensors are superior to in screen fingerprint sensors not only because its just at a much more natural position but also because it is another input gesture that you can easily use
Ive been swearing by the wing for years now. Works perfect for my niche scenarios
Double Tap works best when you tap in the middle Below the camera bar
Linus is the LG Wing of tech
I loved lg it always just worked never lagged it was amazing
I really wish they would still make the blackberry priv, or another slider. You could have the front camera on the slider.
Luke not realising that the back tap isn't any particular button, or that you can change the swipe down on the gesture bar icon to be notifications
Had an LG G8 and it was awesome.
Linus: "It's super slippery".
Also Linus: This video was brought to you by DBrand, skins that make your phone less slippery.
You'd think LG would have issues with their swiveling screen but if you remember they made the Sidekick back in the day and everyone's screens came off. So, they've learned since then.
For gimbal mode, shake the phone around and you'll be impressed how well it stabilises the cropped picture. RIP LG :(
"It's not just a phone. It's a transformer!"
Yeah, i loved my G6. Used it for 3 years
