The more im watching your tutorials the more enjoyment im getting in my own painting. Thank you! Learning from you to try to relax my attitude to painting and enjoy your tips.
Thanks, Steve this is a great little painting, I always like watching your videos, you seem to make it look so ease when I try. to paint it always looks like a mass. Thanks again
A lot of dark shadow behind the trees. A few tiny trees in the distance and dark bigger ones in front of previous ones. Lot of yellow and green bushes on both sides of this lovely scene with a few small rocks here and there. The bright light of sky reflects beautifully on ground which absolutely gorgeous. Thank you Steven for sharing this wonderful painting with the demos, which help us to improve our artworks.
Beautiful yellow, pale and dark green colors for the sky. A few thin dark trunks are drawn and now some yellow bushes at bottom of trunks. There are darker and bigger tree trunks on right hand side as well as left one. The background is having lot of green colors behind these trunks and now there are some big dark trees with thin branches on both sides. It's a splendid view thanks to this white light between those trees which give a sense of depth. The white path is adding lot of beauty to this lovely scene. On foreground lot of dark green and yellow bushes with small rocks. I thank you Steven for this lovely painting with wonderful teachings and instructive demos. and also for the little figure.
Steven, that was just briilliant! Still an intermediate watercolorist at best, I long to wield a brush with the confidence you do. Your simple color palette gives such a serene woodland. This may be my first video of yours, but it certainly won't be my last! Truly beautiful!!
I’ve jut started and wish I could get anything near this would love to be able to get to this stage but keep giving up I definitely need lots of practice you make it look so easy
As you say Keith practice is key. There are no shortcuts but if you stick with it you'll get there. Just keep practicing and very best of luck. Let me know how you get on
Beautiful Steven....oh....and this one was over 25 mins (not 12 ) and you were explaining everything as you went along at every stage. The result was a great water colour painting. 😊
In my other comment below I noticed that I didn't emphasize on all the green shadow behind the trees which really bring out the bright light in middle of this lovely scene. This bright light of sky reflects beautifully on ground. There are big rocks on foreground on left hand side. Thank you Steven for this interesting, instructive video and demos.
Thanks Steven, can you please tel what brushes do you use? As a beginner in watercolor I am happy to watch your great work. Do you leave the pains drying on the palette or clean it after finishing ?
I've listed all my materials over on my patreon page if you follow the links. I leave the paint to dry on the pallet overnight . no I never clean the palette I just use it dry
thank you too, sure thing. I actually use acrylics but I did a watercolor yesterday, it's always fun, i'll upload it tomorrow. Oh, I mentioned you on the paintings page of my website, hope that you like that. bye bye
Thanks Steve, your videos are really a big boost. My question is how do you handle the colors on the palette? How long do you let them dry? Do not they come off the paddle when rubbing them? Thank you very much!!!
+Ester Celina Casenave I squeeze the paint onto to the palette and then let it dry overnight to use the next day. This way there is never any wasted paint . thanks for watching and very best of luck with your watercolour painting
I only use the mounts to show the painting at the end of the video. To be honest I can't remember where I bought them from. It was somewhere on eBay but it was about 5 or 6 years ago and I can't remember where. Sorry I can't be of anymore help but thanks for watching and happy painting
Work is fine and competent; however, the approach too much imitates wet in wet oil painting work. So as the sketch for oil work, it is fine; for the finished watercolour painting, though, it is not. What I wish to say, is that at around 4-5 min of the video, at that stage, you should have sprayed some pure water over the drying paint from a distance, to create random highlights coming through the foliage, and glitter on the grass. For that, keep the painting flat. Tiny water drops would loosen up colour coverage, and create more distinct watercolour look, characterised by (1) accidental highlights and (2) fields of broken colour. Then, when applying bolder strokes in tree trunks, do it slowly, get rid of the hake brush then and, using round sable, vary brush pressure a little, twist the brush as you move it, imitate the real growth of the tree with movement of the brush; then remove some dark pigment from the bark with pure water in the brush, so that light wraps around those tree trunks. Happy painting!
+Zvonimir Tosic many thanks for taking the time to share some of your experience in art. I've never used a spray before but can understand the benefits of doing so. I haven't used a round brush either for a long time but again I can appreciate the different effects it offers . I've used a hake brush for some time now and use it for 99% of the painting. I've always tended to stick with what I know and have experimented very little even though I understand the only way we learn is through experimentation to discover new techniques. I will try what you say with the spray and see how I get on. Many thanks for your comments and very best wishes. Happy painting
The main reason for slight water spray, and for breaking up the colour, is to make paint look less uniform. Painters of 100+ years ago did not have such problems because the watercolours back then would granulate much more. Pigments were coarser. But today we have totally different formulation of all paints; they are ground superfine for industrial applications and oils. That feature kills their use for watercolours, because such pigments produce very flat, saturated tones, filling up all paper pores. That is why watercolours differ very little from acrylics (yuck!) nowadays. In reality, watercolours demand a different pigment recipe, but the pigments come from suppliers already super-finely ground.
+Zvonimir Tosic many thanks for your extremely informative comments. I will certainly be investing in a water spray and experimenting to see what kind of effects I can induce. It's interesting how painters and pigments have evolved over the centuries and influenced artists Styles and techniques. Thanks again for offering myself and the viewers the benefits of your experience. Best of luck and happy painting
You are absolutely right in everything you say ,that is why i have rejected all art material and i mean each and every item from brushes, paints to paper as 'total rubbish' in the extreme which is sold from supplier of so called art material to make and produce my own .
The more im watching your tutorials the more enjoyment im getting in my own painting. Thank you! Learning from you to try to relax my attitude to painting and enjoy your tips.
You are so welcome!
