What's the best RC plane for learning to fly?

  • This is a question I'm often asked and in this video, I'll tell you what I think is the best combination of radio and RC plane for those wanting to get into the hobby.
The AXN Clouds Fly Floater is an incredibly durable model that is also very easy to fly. What's more, the total cost of getting started is well under $200 even when you include shipping fees.
The AXN can be purchased from a number of different hobby stores and usually sells for between $45 and $50, the 9X radio is also widely available but the cheapest source is (like it or not) HobbyKing, where this radio is called the Turnigy 9X and lists for under $60. It would also pay to get the matching HobbyKing 6-channel receiver because the 8-channel one that comes with the radio is a little large for this model.
Just a note however, if you buy the version with servos and ESC already installed, you really should by a separate UBEC to power your RC gear as the one built into that standard ESC is not powerful enough.
A full review and more information you need to know if you plan to buy this model will soon be available on the RCModelReviews.com website at
    www.rcmodelreviews.com
and also on the RCModelReviews TH-cam channel at:
    / rcmodelreviews
If you have any questions, feel free to include them in the TH-cam comments for this video.

Thank you! Thank you! You do a great job. I just bought a Champ and have learned a lot from your videos. My friend who is an RC flyer suggested, as a next step, something else....After I showed him your video he said" Wow...Ahhhh..He has something there"...People like you really make a difference!!!

That looks like a really cool beginner plane. I remember I started out on a three channel Parkzone Cub. I am a firm believer in learning to fly with a four channel system plus the motor is in the back. Meaning less damage when you crash. I like the power in this plane too.

because of this video I bought myself an AXN and fullying flying it after 4th flight! note I have never flown a plane before only training with them in simulator, indeed this AXN floater is great for slow and fast flying! I'm loving it!

Definitely mate, I recorded my flights when I started a few weeks ago, they're on my channel, I discovered that purring 2 carbon rods down the side of the fuselage made it much more crash resistant, In my crash compilation video all the crashes happened within a hour... and it still flew at the end of the day. I was back the next day to fly more!

I love how professional the star of the show is....."on me....ON ME!!"......:you can go back to the plane now".
Bruce, you are a director/producer at heart, (but always a living leg-end).
What about scripting people to present the video for you? You could even have a quick brief with your camera man.....(Ron by any chance - He does need a lot of directing to be honest), and just shoot the video and see what happens. Worst case is that you have to fly the model a bit more and film it again.....?!

The one weak section of the AXN is the fuselage area forward from the wing; I re-enforce that with inch-wide strips of thin plywood glued to the sides and then locked in the front with black electrical tape. That makes the thing nearly indestructible.

Bruce, you can get the crinkles out of the nose and similar crash damage by putting the damaged bit in hot water and hey presto, foam goes back to shape.
I like to take mine slope soaring off Hill 60 near Wollongong in NSW Australia. Great fun aircraft. I totally agree with your recommendation for this HK product. Get it, fly it, crash it, repair it and go fly it again.

This is from an "old guy". I firmly believe the very best plane to learn to fly on is a Proctor Antic. Why?
    1) it will teach you to build
    2) it will teach you to read plans and blueprints
    3) it can be set up as an aileron or rudder plane
    4) if set up according to the plans it will take off and land with no input other than the throttle.
    5) it's aerobatic to some extent (I used to hover mine like a 3D plane today)
    6) it looks cool and is different from anything else you'll see at the club field

Recently bought a copy of this plane. Bixler 2. Lent it to my friend who isn't as sure on his controls as me. It just is so much better than the two Carbon Cub + with SAFE and GPS and all that.

  • @obRCmania
    @obRCmania 12 ปีที่แล้ว

I think that the Horizon Hobby Super Cub is the best beginner because you learn how to do proper take off and landing and it has the anti crash technology (ACT) which when you are learning is very helpful however is does get annoying after a while but you just flick a switch and it turns off. Also you can modify it like crazy without to much hassle. I will admit that the AXN is cheaper and comes with 4ch rather than 3. But the Super Cub was the plane I learnt to fly and still do fly it today.

if you're really not sure, a Hobbyzone Champ or a Flyzone Playmate... both are $70-90, come with radio, battery, charger, and you don't need to drive out to a huge area to get a "taste" of RC flying, the Champs are wickedly tough as well.
only drawback is they're 3 channel, which you will grow out of fast if you end up liking RC flying.

Thanks for the video, I'm looking to start a new hobby, probably RC planes, but I have a question if you could possibly answer, Does wind play a massive part in flying this plane, and also, where would you suggest to start flying (Parks?)

  • @dingalarm
    @dingalarm 10 ปีที่แล้ว

For many years, and even now, I have read that the best model to learn RC flying on is a high wing trainer powered by a .40 size glow engine, due to the large size and stability of such a model. However, I'd like to be able to use one of the small engines I have (e.g. Cox Babe Bee, Surestart, OS10FSR and Enya 11CXD) for the same purpose. In your opinion, then, is it quite acceptable to use these engines for a trainer (wingspan ~ 1m), or an electric model such as you have suggested, instead of a .40 powered trainer ? I hope you can help. Thanks for your excellent and informative video !

The AXN is a great plane! And it is one of many planes that flies that way. There is another plane made by Dynam that is just as good and you can actually get it ready to fly with brushless motor, battery and charger for $100 US. The radio is cheap but it gets the job done and the plane flies wonderfully! Also changing to a 3s 20c 2200mah pack gives longer flights and the plane is not bothered by the extra weight. Oh and you don't need to hand launch either or use wheels. Rise of grass easily!

XJET Yeah, that's a really nice plane. My birthday is in mid September, and I want to get into RC Planes, and I also want to buy a really nice FPV System so I can fly in my Borough ("City") I really one day would like to fly an RC plane for like 30+ miles one day, ... Nice video, was looking at the Skymule but I keep hearing it's landing gear sucks. I keep seeing these gliders like the one in this video, I actually like them, because when it comes to landing, I'll be able to slow the plane down nice & slow for a nice & smooth landing. etc. etc. I'm still learning about RC Planes, I haven't bought anything yet. But I've actually bought a cheap helicopter and didn't like em becaue the battery life is terrible, but I see the planes are older technology and they've been arround a lot longer, so I figured planes would be much better, and so far, I'm right, they are. That's using rudder as-well, still not enough, and I don't like the yaw action, I like seamless rolls along one axis. I may need to up the throws, I have got the linkage on the middle hole on the control horn, so ill take the innermost hole for more throws. Overall great plane. When I fly low I use ailerons and opposite rudder to keep the nose from dropping, sorta like a knife edge action, seems to work a treat, Ill try turning with the rudder and oppsite aileron though next time. Great plane!!!

@atreewithnolife Haha, a little confusing since the horn is on the bottom. I guess it would be to top hole if the plane was on its belly. But I get confused when you start saying what other gadgetry to use rather other than the stock parts. You mention a 30XB controller, and the 9X radio (but their are several on the HobbyKing page) and UBEC for power? The bigger prop is cool but Colet and shaft size? I'm getting lost. Here's my question: Since i've never flown an r/c plane before, which should I start with? A low wing .40 powered trainer, a high wing .40 powered cessna 182 trainer, or a low wing tail dragger ~.60 powered trainer? I don't know what size it needs, I do know the mounts inside it are bigger than the mounts for my .40's.

@Palexb14 The supercub is one of the best trainers around. Takes lots of good hits, but make sure you unplug the "act" system that's supposed to help you fly. It takes control of the plane and will crash it, unless you are very high. Get yourself a sim too, Realflight or Pheonix I would NOT recommend the Turnigy radio at all, find yourself a used DX7 or Dx6

I want to buy the transmitter you displayed in this video, when to Hobby King site there are two 9X models. Which model should I get the TX-9X-M2 $53.82 or the TX-9X-M1 $54.00. Very new to the hobby. Also can you give me part No for the better servos you used as well, seems to be a lot on the website. Thank you very much.

Is Turnigy 9x better than HobbyKing? Cause I read the review, most of them only gave 1 crown. Does it support mixing, flaperon, elevon etc?

Could you put together a list of links to everything I need from hobbyking? See, I really think that this is a great way for me to get started in rc aviation, but I don't really understand what I'm doing. Even after I buy these things, I don't exactly know what to do with them. I know you are probably busy but if you have the time, It would really be helpful. Thanks
