Poor guy was so tired from shooting down so many MiG-29 Fulcrum’s, MiG-31’s, and SU-27 Flankers’s in his F-14D Super Tomcat. But still. Fuckin worth it. I’d imagine there were probably so many skirmishes in the skies during the Cold War (because it’s a good opportunity to test each other’s capabilities) that were covered up to not cause World War III and the Tomcat’s were the one’s that probably absolutely terrified the East they can fly faster and can out maneuver you no matter how much you try to use your bullshit maneuverability crutch in those eastern fighters (because it was quite literally a skill issue) and if you try to run from them it’s basically COME HERE BOY! WHERE YA RUNNIN TO!? (The only aircraft I know of that maybe could get away is the MiG-25 Foxbat which was designed to intercept the SR-71 if I remember correctly. Even though it couldn’t really do shit to shoot it down and also if remember correctly it was made out of Nylon so in a dogfight….. Yeah I’m not putting any bets on it that’s all I’m gonna say…) *Death by missile or guns either way because you only get away if the Tomcat is outta ammo, fuel, or is either ordered to disengage or they let you go* I can only imagine the amount of PTSD some former Soviet or Chinese fighter pilots have from these Demons and they all breathed a sigh of relief when they were decommissioned. That was the worst mistake we ever made. Up there with the decommissioning of the black bird. We just scrapped em all! Didn’t even leave any to put into museums or anything! *The F-14 Tomcat is not broken we swear.* *Crosses fingers behind back with a clearly mischievous grin* At least that’s my theory and stance it may have some basis in reality it also may not. That Pilot must have had a really good RIO. The Rio’s are among the best co-pilots out there. No flight controls, yet a strong will to get back on deck.

When you learn more about the F/A-18, you realize it's an aircraft made for congress, it technically checks all the boxes but it's good at nothing, it doesn't have the internal fuel, doesn't have the range, doesn't have the speed (the F/A-18 can't go supersonic at sea level) it doesn't have the armament, it doesn't have the radar range of the F-14, it's a scam. I used to like the F/A-18, but now it feels bittersweet. And they murdered the Tomcat, every single one of them, even the F-14Ds, they murdered them.
The F/A-18 has internal fuel tanks + it's one of the most well loved aircraft by Navy servicemen and even those of foreign air forces + it's perfectly capable of every role it's meant to fulfil + the F-14 wasn't "murdered" by the F/A-18, it was pulled out of service to prevent Iran from getting spare parts for their own F-14 fleet + the F/A-18 is fully capable of Mach speeds at sea level + it's not a money drainer like the F-14 + you don't have a source.

I believe it might have been the following. 1. Difficulty in maintenance in comparison to newer systems. 2. Changing threats and the expense to upgrade to keep up. 3. @@awashhydra tbf, the F-14 was being more suited towards an A-G role, with the edition of the LANTIRN pod and the F-14D having the capability to carry JDAMs, plus the number of Tomcats being lost was going down each year, with the last accident involving an F-14 being in 2002. As for the other reasons, eh, sound about right. But I still feel robbed with having the Super Hornet over the much more capable ST-21.

All the best birds the east had to offer stared into the eyes of the tomcat, and they all got bit.

Where's the streetwise F-14 to fight the risin' odds?
Isn't there a bright light upon a fiery steed?
Late at night, I toss and I turn and I dream of what I need
[Chorus]
I need a tomcat
I'm holding out for a tomcat till the end of the night
He's gotta be strong and he's gotta be fast
And he's gotta be fresh for the fight
I need a tomcat (tomcat)
I'm holding out for a tomcat till the morning light (tomcat till the morning light)
He's gotta be sure and it's gotta be soon
And he's gotta be larger than life, larger than life
Somewhere after midnight in my wildest fantasy
Somewhere just beyond my reach, there's someone reaching back for me
Racing on the thunder and rising with the heat
It's gonna take a F14 to sweep me off my feet, yeah
[Chorus]
I need a tomcat
I'm holding out for a tomcat till the end of the night
He's gotta be strong and he's gotta be fast
And he's gotta be fresh for the fight
