- A couple of weeks ago, I was invited to do a Zoom call with the Brantford Lapidary and Mineral Society in Canada to chat about all things opal.

Thank you for your wonderful lessons about opals in the past! I saw a black opal for sale, about 1.5 carats. for only $58. I figured it had to be lab-created, and I studied the stone carefully. I did see a repeat in the pattern that looked like the letter 'M'.I knew from the low price it had to be lab-created, but due to your excellent lessons, I was able to see other reasons for it being a fake. Thanks a lot, Justin!

So only black opals exist in Australia right? Places that sell black Ethiopian or Brazilian are just black crystal? I keep seeing seller sell them as black opals. But I notice they are extremely dark but if you shine a light its still transparent. So these are not true black opal because of the lack of dark potch right?
Oh my Lordy! When you think you've seen every possible beautiful opal then all of a sudden you pull out a star opal! I didn't even know there was such a thing! Amazing!
There are black opals in Ethiopia as well but they are volcanic opal not sedimentary opal like in Australia
Justin has also shown us its very easy to fake a black crystal opal by smoking it, always buy from a trusted source...its hard to know forsure if its really black Ethiopian or if its just smoked Ethiopian without seeing it in person..if a deal online is too good to be true, its probably a scam.

Justin, Thank you for putting this on the TH-cam channel, I learned a tremendous amount. Just getting into trying to cut opal and I am having trouble getting white opals to polish well. Any tricks or tips to make that go better?? If they are wet, the color is amazing, but I can't seem to get the haze off when polishing.

Hahaha, Opal Fever, it's so true. You can get obsessed with a beautiful stone, and sometimes I honestly have to hold myself back from pestering the hell out of you with questions and thoughts about a given opal after a video. However I am a very private person and would HATE someone doing that to me so if I ever start to email you, it will be business related I promise. :)

Excellent video Justin. I was just wondering about natural black opal and well made doublets , do some doublets ever get sold as black or is it hard to reproduce that natural potch layer. ?
The natural potch layer is usually not perfect and straight. And doesn’t have a glue line
This video is giving me opal fever. Holy God DWAYNE.
Polishing with the 3000 wheel sometimes is okay but geez dont expect to get rid of "stuff" on the surface, I also use a wool felt, foam pads are magnets for particules and you can't get them out...
Now for that history lesson. Make it at least 30 minutes please, the longer the better. 😁

We do have 240 volt here. Our normal house voltage is 120 but our major appliances run on 240. Every house built in the last 30 years has 240 volt.

Hey Justin, I'm from British Columbia, Canada. Apparently there is an opal mine in Vernon. Are you aware of this mine and the type of opal mined? I'm curious to know if it's all volcanic or can there be sedimentary opal also? I love Australian opal and I'm watching your videos to learn lapidary skills. Thanks so much for all the hard work you put into your videos. I just set up almost all night watching your videos glued to the screen LOL! ☺️🌈
There is no sedimentary opal outside of Australia that I am aware of so it will be volcanic

what happens to the land where the opal mines are mined out? Is it reclaimed or left barren?

hi could you please tell me, when colour sits on black potch all over that's only a hairs thickness, and is backed by gray potch or sand is it still a black opal?
You need an opal in your glasses like just a tiny one inlayed in the side it would look real classy

I would think the members of the club know electricity enough to be able to have a 240vac outlet installed for those machines. Expensive shipping the machines though.

I hope you can help me out with this. I have some bolder opal . I noticed that one of my smaller pieces of bolder opal is losing its color for some reason. Is there a way to get the color back?
