Yes, this was one of the first videos I did for the channel and I was working from the screen on the camera, so everything was quite hard to see and about half a second delayed. I did correct this off camera!
Thanks for this, mine was overheating badly. I had an icepack on it whilst I waited for some thermal paste. Not ideal but I needed it. Only had one year and the fans holes were clogged up with dust, solved with hoover, also the paste was gone. Wiped off bits of old paste and applied new. Now max temp on heavy load is 80 and normal around 50-60. No more overheating to 100.
I have the same problem. Access to the fan and radiator is hard, need to remove the motherboard, it's so scary for a non-professional. I was unable to suck up the dust with hoover. I had to pick it manually with tweezers. I have dismantled the thick plastic lid from the chassis, it stopped lots of heat. It helped a little to lower the temperature.
Very useful video. My daughter's NUC was running very hot with the fan going full pelt. We opened it up with your help and cleaned out the cooler with a vacuum cleaner, now running cool with little fan noise. Many thanks!

Thanks, works for my D54250WYKH. People have commented that you cannot get the H version out, but it does come out - just use gentle persuasion.
Remove the plastic housing that covers the headphone jack by pressing the 2 plastic tabs inside the case anc pushing them out, motherboard comes out easily after that.

Holy hell. That's like 4x as much paste as you should be using. At least. I had to use something like that to get the chipset die to contact the cooler, as my thermal pad was all but ruined after 4-5 years of running and I didn't have a replacement. Either way, the factory applied paste was very badly done as well, so it's well worth redoing it if you find the fan in your NUC runs more than you want it to. It was also completely dried up and cracked by now. I got regular load temps (Kodi video playback and such) of high 50's on the GPU now and low 40's on the CPU after re-applying. Not sure what they were before, but the fan went on high RPM as soon as I did anything on the system, which was just super annoying.
Good guide, but my lord, so much cooling paste! Use 1/4 of that. The cooler sits on the core of the CPU. Cooling paste is just to close any microscopic scratches in both the CPU and cooler.
Yes it was rather a lot - it was hard to film and apply thermal paste at the same time! ;)
It was reapplied afterwards.
how do you get the nuc top lid off it seems to be really tight and I'm afraid I'll break it

What thermal pad did you use as a replacement on the nuc chip set int he video? Thermal pads come in different thicknesses and not sure which to order.

This is fine, but the D54250DWKH has a larger aluminium case, and I CANNOT get the motherboard out to remove the battery, which I have to do because of that famous Ubunto jinx that means the unit won't power up after sleep. Any ideas on how to get the MOBO out of that larger case?

@@LinusT Try removing the dark plastic oval-shaped cover surrounding the front-panel audio jack first. It has two tabs you can gently pry apart from the inside of the case, working a blade into the gap from the front as it starts to get loose, and it will eventually pop out. With that cover removed you'll see that the 3.5mm audio jack protrudes about a millimeter out through the front of the case, and that's probably what's hanging things up. Removing that tiny cover gives it a bit more wiggle room, just enough for the motherboard to be carefully coerced out of the case.

I'm having this exact problem. Just figured out that the 3.5mm jack cover could be removed since it looked like that part of the board was where it was stuck. My fingers hurt from repeatedly trying to pull the board out though so I'll have to try pulling it out again with that piece out.

Hello, can you please tell me what are the exact heights of the motherboard + cooler? I was wondering if a small motherboard like that would be usefull in laptops, because nucs don't require a high wattage.
WHat temperatures do you have with the Arctic Silver 5 while IDLE and FULL LOAD ? Good video, but I hoped that the main point was to compare the temperatures. That amount of thermal compound. Glad you re-did it. :-) I consider re-paste-ing my D54250WYKH.THanks
Arctic Silver 5 may not have the best tempertature but it does peforme a great stable performance throughout
I fixed my fan today and wanted to re-do the paste but after removing the two holding screws for the copper sink and saw the sink was separated from the paste-pad, it wouldnt come off the board. I dont want to break anything, what am I missing after the two screws? (I dont have a third screw on the vent like you do).
There are three screws, they form a triangle.

This video certainly aged well -for me, that is, since I have a 7th with almost everything in the same place :D. Though I have a big question: do you know if there is any way to replace the whole cooler for a bigger one? I ask particularly because of the three-screw bracket, since I haven't found a single cooler online to fit that!!!!
Is it possible to operate the NUC without the cooling device incl. fan and without the top cover lid, that is with just an open cpu at the top?
No you need a fan or some other form of cooling
I want to mod the case and custom build a mount to hitch a noctua fan with thermal pipes coming up, like a car engine coming through its hood.
Thats too much paste waaaay to much! Check some Overklocking experts videos how its supposed to be!
+AlexR I agree, I did redo it afterwards. Hard to gauge it whilst staring through a viewfinder. ;)
Yes its too much i put less than this quantity and i had to replace it and open my yoga 900 again LOL. i found that best way for these long cpus is spread method.
People over exaggerate the difference of applying too much. Hell even with mayonaise or toothpaste people got processors working fairly good.

Any benefits would be marginal to be honest. Unfortunately I didn't take any before and after measurements as I filmed this section while assembling the NUC for the first time.
I actually used too much Arctic Silver in the video as it was difficult to apply it and operate the camera at the same time and re-did it afterwards with a smaller amount.

I lost some ports on my NUC 54250 and therefore would like to exchange the motherboard. Do you know where I can purchase a new motherboard for this unit? It's the WYKH version.
I just got one from the college surplus store and it won't even get video..... 40 bucks down the tube..

It's like you're putting toothpaste to your toothbrush with that much thermal paste.
Is it possible to remove the CPU and get a new one on it? or is it stuck?
The CPU is soldered down and cannot be removed or replaced.
Nobody ever tells you how thick the thermal pad must be. 😭
They often come apart when removing the cooler and so do need replacing.
I need to know too did you ever find out how thick it is?

Hahaha so theres no point to putting a additional heatsink on the outside of that metal fan housing.
But, from the look of it, one could easily put a massive heatsink on there with a diferent fan or maybe even modify a water block too.
For the cost involved you'd probably just be better off with a newer NUC, or just a bigger PC as in going watercooling you'd be massively be increasing the size of it anyway.
