I really wanted to like this Sega-developed game starring Marvel's web-slinger, but the truth is, despite the attractive graphics and animation, it's a pretty dull game.
Yes, there are four playable heroes to choose from, and playing with friends probably does earn this System 33-powered brawler bonus points, but as a single player effort, the limited roster of moves and cast of uninspired enemies does little to make you FEEL like a crime-fighting superhero. Even Spidey himself looks fed-up with life, given how he shuffles nonchalantly across the screen!
I guess for 1991 the graphics and Marvel licence would have been a draw to arcade-goers, but compared to the likes of Konami's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Spider-Man is just a bit too much of a snorefest to recommend.

@@xXSonTJXx In that game. You lose health till 1 hp is left. Then you only got ONE HIT LEFT! (You can spam your special at ease. normally it costs health. But at 1 hp. you can just desperate special spam to fight with your last inch of life.)

You can also see the future inspiration of the Maximum Carnage gameplay with the heavy characters making crashing sounds and such other similarities.
There was nothing like playing at arcades in the 90s as a kid- such a fresh experience!
Looks like Spiderman has seen better days, by the way he walks, like and old man.
Spider man debut in comics in 1962 (at that time he was a teen superhero) and this game was released in 1991 so spiderman would be in his 40s

As much as I loved the Ninja Turtles game as a kid, I can appreciate the greater variety of enemies and level designs in this game.

@@juandoe1827 if they properly pushed the system to its limits, yes. But the SNES was the better system to convert that game on. Even that system would've had its limits with it too
@@radamesrivera4193 true. The Genesis did have comix zone which really showed what the system was capable of in this style.

lol the way Spidey walks makes it seem like he has a beer belly, kinda reminded me of Peter Parker from Earth-TRN701 the "wrong choices" Spiderman, guess this game was ahead of it's time!
I loved this game. Namor was my favorite to use. In Captain America and the Avengers Vision was my favorite. And in X-men Colossus was my go to. And can't forget about about the Punisher game, Nick Fury was cool, but it just seemed cooler playing as Punisher. Anyway love these game play videos, brings back fond memories of the Arcade.

King pin, Lizard, Venom, green goblin and orange too, Sandman, Dr Doom, Scorpion, and Dr Octopus, wow amazing times.

Nothing like the nostalgia of never seeing the second level until now because the older kids were always playing this game. 😂
One of the best beat ups I enjoyed playing as a kid at celebration station. Even got left behind on a field trip playing this in summer camp. Didn’t even know everyone was gone until i ran out of tokens.

@@jesseowenvillamor6348 the staff ended up calling the summer camp staff. Someone came and got me lol! I was given free tokens to play whatever I wanted until they came back to get me.
Spidey's debut to the arcades and for his first game it isnt too bad. I love the music, the graphics complement the comic style really well, the voice acting is great for the time apart from Venom, its has all the best villains that Spidey faced and the gameplay is strong. If it had a faster speed, more varied ai attack patterns along with various mixed up attack combos and grapple moves for all the characters it would have been perfect.
This is spider man and 6 sinister from 90s wow I remember so much this game on arcade machines. Damn remember times.

Or they could use ideas from this game along with Maximum Carnage, Separation Anxiety and lethal protector as one big game. This could be a prologue while the others can be a trilogy. I know separation anxiety was based on Lethal protector comic and maximum carnage takes place after it. It just had a different title.

@@MrBoogiemoney Yeah, they can just use Lethal Protector as the first, maximum carnage as the second, than Separation Anxiety. Maximum Carnage can add multiplayer and play as the other heroes in the console versions.

For those wondering why, Mac Gargan (The Scorpion) has worn the Venom Symbiote. It was a few decades after the game.
@@angrytheclown801 I always thought that comic writer Brian Bendis was a fan of the game. After all, he did do that Venom Bomb story which had Dr. Doom behind the scenes and a giant Venom to boot.
According to Roppyaku Tsurumi, the initial plan for this game was to be a Strider like game where you get to pick Spidey and Black Cat

My #1 fav childhood video game. This game is probably worth a million brand new and boxed.
This is one of the most unfair games ever made in the arcade: the character loses vitality all the time, even when he shouldn't - he loses when he's hit (ok), when he hits something(?), when he walks, when he stands still.
I grew up at that time and I know that machines were made to extract as much money as possible from players, but this game was way past the acceptable limit. And that spoiled the player experience.
NOTHING was more of a ripoff than Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo arcade. That AI wa simpossible and if you wanted to play 2 player, it cost 25 cents for each match. Now THAT was way more money and much more unfair than this game. At least this game had a manageable AI.
I never noticed that. Maybe Spider-Man's awful posture was meant to distract us.

That's why it's largely forgotten methinks. Which is a shame because there's a good game hidden there. Tweak some things here and there, get rid of the fast acting cancer of the lifebar, fix the posture, and you could have a great game here.

Agreed, but on the Saturn. Sega made a mistake releasing the 32X. They should have done what Nintendo (Super FX chip) did by putting extra chips in the cartridge for the Mega Drive instead... like they did with Virtua Racer with the SVP chip etc. Then Sega could have concentrated more on Saturns development and not releasing to early.
Played this one so much , during the summer holydays , when they would open the arcades by the beach.

Considering how games (especially comic book games) were designed back in the 80s and 90s, I'm legitimately surprised they didn't give Spiderman limited resources on his webbing. Dude straight up cheesed Electro.
Oh wow. I remember this shit!! I forget where I played this as a kid, but seeing it makes me feel like I saw something in front of me that I thought I dreamed. But for sure I played this.

I loved this game. It was a local food lion and when I got my money up, my grandpa (rip) would drive me there and sit in the car while I went in there for a couples hours or until closing. I’m 41 now. This was early 90’s.
The graphics tried to simulate the 70-80 comics looks. Similar to Data East The Avengers. Love the huge sprites and scaling bits, but not that much some animations. Specially Spidey's stiff walk and stance. Konami did better job animation with the X-men and capcom above them. Great video!✌️

x-men looks great, but man that game is so overrated, it's pretty bad actually... a game I had huge nostalgia for.. played it some years back and the glasses came right off
In reality, the artistic section of the X-Men arcade is a little inferior to this one, and its animations look like action toys. However, having 6 players try it out back in the day is priceless.

You are right, a couple of Quartet's songs, "Oki_Rap" and "FM Funk", were arranged for this game.

I HATED arcade games that had life meters that went down on their own. It nullifies the player being able to beat the game by skill alone, and essentially requires an investment of additional quarters.
Actually, all arcade games only require an investment of additional quarters. If you're rich, you're the best player around.

Amazing, Spidey tries to lose weight and chose to walk than swinging.
This was was amazing. Along TMNT this was among the top 5 Arcade Games for me. (I'm probably forgetting some games but this were Top Games)

I tried until 1:20 (this part). It's one of those games that makes you reminded about video games being part of the computer entertainment (interactive media) and game developers shouldn't design a game which is too simple or too difficult. Which means I will give this game a point of 7/10.

I remember that third stage being it for me. I always said once you beat that there was no point in stage 4 because you saw everything besides Dr. Doom. But stage 3: so much fun fighting boss after boss after boss in the Spiderman universe.

The whole atmosphere reminds me of Toei’s Spider-Man from the late 70s, hence the anime influence with the enemies

I love the Spiderman arcade game I played it last night and I beat the entire game and I won my highest score!!! Can you believe it!! I haven't played it in a long time but until now!!! I love to go to this place called Yestercades and they have a lot of great classic arcade games from back in the day!!!! I love it!!! Arcade machines cost a fortune!!! I was thinking about getting me a game room filled with pinball and built-in arcades for the kids and adults too!!! That would be awesome!!!!!!!

NGL; @ First Glance, This cabinet came off as the bootleg arcade & Avengers the real MVP. But the more you play both games: Spider-Man was the Real One! Albeit the cast of selectable characters. At least Hawkeye got his spot in both 😎
