The main reason is severe criticism. If a movie has no content quality the critics and audience will make the movie utter flop. By the fear of that Mollywood making good films
Not just content, the making quality, technical section also plays significant roles. Watch Thallumala (Ballad of Brawls), it's a technically brilliant film, and as the name suggests the story revolves around chains of fights. Bt as u says content is King here❤
People are literate who most of all are liberal, then you will be basic awareness that yes you can critiize the best actor or make argument against director about movie,
I am surprised how many videos are coming on about rise of Malayalam cinema now when this industry has been releasing quality content from years ( since 1985 from what I have seen). A lot of people are familiar with Malayalam films since years too although unfortunately via remakes(esp Akshay Kumar movies in 2000s). Now ott platforms and lack of good content in other movie industries (major reason) are giving Mollywood it's due recognition. My only hope is they continue making grounded films which we can relate to instead of over the top movies due to the popularity now all over India.
0:08 kafi time se nehi . their movies are always good bro. I started watching malayalam filims from 2012.as a guy from delhi i love their filims more thean any filim indstury. The thing is the movies are becoming popular now old works and new works because of ott. 😂 malayalam cenima is producing good filims from starting bruh.
Malayalam movies golden period was 90s, lot 9f movies were remade to different languages. You can watch Thallumala, Varathan, Premam, Big B, Iyobinte pustakam, Lucifer.....
Malayalam movies have allways been the good standard. It’s just that they don’t have a huge population like Tamil and Telugu audience and therefore don’t have huge budgets to spend on marketing outside Kerala and also to help with word of mouth. Also Kerala movies don’t believe in mass movies and illogical stuff which hate to say is what majority of audience everywhere wants. The literacy rate in Kerala is 99% and therefore the audience is a lot more evolved than the rest of the country. I think if anything has changed now it’s mostly the boom of ott platforms and also the fact that Hindi movies are just not doing well and audience is also getting a bit tired of the same old mass movies with the same formula so they’re trying other movies. Also Hindi movies and even Telugu and Tamil unlike before where they would just remake Malayalam movies in their languages and take the profit, can’t be done anymore because of ott. To put things in perspective allmost all the early 2000’s classic hit hindi movies are remakes from Malayalam movies like Hulchul Hungama Hey Baby Herapheri Houseful 2 Garam Masala Drishyam 1 and 2 Bhool Bhulaiya Chup chup ke Body Guard Kyun ki And many more.. this just a sample
You should watch 2018, based on real disaster that shook Kerala. It has Tovino and he gives one of the amazing performance. Not to mention, he helped many people during the flood in real life as well.
I disagree about bramayugam. Bramayugam uses Mammotty's star power to the fullest. The director himself said there wont be a bramayugam if Mammootty didn't play that role because he couldn't imagine anyone else playing that role. With Mammootty, we keralites expect a great performance whether he's negative or positive. Mammotty's star power is not beating 10 people but his acting. He played negative characters in Rorschach and Puzhu as well. It is because of Mammootty's starpower that the director showed his name just before the title card and the confidence to release a black and white movie in india at this age. The intro scene, interval punch were a treat for Mammootty fans.

Still the Malayalam industry is within limits and a framework, seriously I don't think Premalu and Avesham had great content that needs to be raved upon, they were just like Instant Noodles, tasty at the time of eating, zero health benefits. People just need some things to laugh and move on that's all. We had great writers earlier but unfortunately the films weren't successful so eventually the art of great writing faded. Now we have punchy music, camera works, cinematography, swag which is enough for the audience!
Sir, I would recommend you to do more research on Malayalam movie industry history. Kamal Hassan sir is from Tamil movie industry. He did worked on some Malayalam movies but major of his work from Tamil industry. We all are Indian's, but these things, were South is getting generalized also needs to be looked into. Also, how Bollywood makes remake and earns lots and lots of money also needs to be researched on. So so many movies from South they remade. Not just Malayalam. Also from other industries. Do some research and give some acknowledgement and respect.

How can you say there is no feministic content in Malayalam?Jaya jaya jaya hai(2023) which is one of the blockbuster Malayalam movie it's all about women empowerment and feminism .Great indian kitchen another masterpiece is also from Malayalam. Infact you can see in Malayalam cinema women characters have much more importance and character. Isn't that women empowerment. So many guys mentioned aavesham has no heroine but it has intresting female character who hold the story in critical points like Bibi mon's mother and chechi who helps to play games. The producer of the movie also a female (FYI Nazariya produced aavesham movie).

Malayalam used to do good movies since 1980s . Only thing , other states started realising that this film industry exists now. Because of OTT
