A big welcome and thank you to all my new viewers from India! You've all given me so many recommendations of different Indian films from different regions. At first, I didn't know where to start, but I'm getting an overwhelming response from people to specifically watch more Malayalam films. That might be a good jumping off point. I also appreciate the corrections. I did my absolute best to get all the facts right, but there were a couple that slipped through the cracks, like S.S. Rajamouli being a Telugu filmmaker, not Tamil, and a few other ones specific to the films I mentioned. Thank you all for your patience and understanding for your average American.
One correction: Masaan didn't lead to a resurgence of grounded movies in India. Movies like Masaan have existed in India for decades, going back to the 50s, most of them with a larger impact than Masaan. If anything, Masaan, Lootera, Titli came at the tail end of the last such wave in Hindi cinema.
While these sort of slow dramas have always existed for a long time in Indian cinema, movies like Masaan were still very important to bringing them to the forefront, as it was during the mid 2010s where movies like these caused a shift in audience perspective and caused more and more studios to make such slow and story or character focused movies. However, it seems like the 2020s has again shifted tides with the growing popularity of mass movies, leading to fewer such movies getting big and the industry again prioritizing large scale action mass movies.
@@adizcool2-655 if you ask anybody who made those movies from 2005 to 2015, they will point at Govind Nihalani, Shyam Benegal, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Girish Karnad, Mani Kaul, G. Aravindan, Mrinal Sen and so on. Let's not erase a large chuck on Indian cinema out of ignorance. Masaan never had the impact of something like Manthan. Mammo, Train to Pakistan, Sardari Begum, Raincoat, all kept coming out. It only died out mid-2010s, not the other way around.
Fun fact about lunchbox Lead actor Irrfan khan rejected to star in christopher Nolan's masterpiece Interstellar in favour of this. And while I think he should have accepted to star in Interstellar but choosing to be here makes much better sense as Nolan would ultimately kill him for no reasons.
@imamangoo8632 well you are right about the domination part. It dominated Andhadhund and few others. But not those two movies because both of them were released in 2017.
I loved a movie called 'Trapped' . Rajkumar Rao delivers a jaw-dropping performance, making you feel every ounce of his fear, frustration, and desperation. The movie is simple but powerful-just one man, one apartment, and the fight to stay alive. It’s not just a movie, it’s an experience that sticks with you. If you love thrillers, it’s a must-watch.
@@cancanman 127 hours is about a man being trapped in between rocks while outdoors , trapped is about getting locked in his own home and doing stuff nobody can imagine , they are not the same bro
Drishyam (2013) Malayalam movie. Remade into 4 Indian Languages, Sinhalese (Sri Lankan Language), Chinese Mandarin and possibly will be remade into Korean. And there are talks of a Hollywood Remake. P. S : It has a sequel too and maybe a 3rd Part (the writer-director, Jeetu Joseph, has said of such a possibility).
Nah. As long as there's a telugu film in a list , the list will remain trash. Eega is an overrated film. Also there isn't a single satyajit ray film or malayalam films in the list. There's an ocean of good films from India and bro chose Eega 🤣
@@politecat3299 I think it's because Eega does a great job at connecting people to its story. It's not a trash tho, overall its a fun movie, also give this man a chance to explore bro, Like it takes time to recognize peak
07:33 A bit of explanation for the non-hindi audience: The phrase "O Stree, kal aana" means "Hey Stree (lady), come tomorrow", which was a way to delay the witch's visit by asking her each day to come the next day instead. The villagers didn't write something like "Hey lady, never come back here" as it would sound rude to the ghost and it's something which you mustn't say to a visitor. So the humble way to decline her visit. But our protagonist here (Vicky) pisses on the word "kal" (tomorrow) and makes it look like an invite. Therefore the witch strikes and takes away a man. So one of the friends is accusing Vicky of pissing on their "tomorrow" 07:38
This really is just bollywood films and Eega (the best of the bunch). Not Indian gems you should have added more films from other industries if you want to use Indian. Lots of bollywood only fans here saying its not a big deal to call Rajamouli a pure telugu director Tamil which shows how little worth these North Indian Hindi cow belt losers give South india cause if we say Bollywood movies speak Urdu and not Hindi they would call us traitors to iNDIA..
Just wanted to share an experience. I lived in tamil nadu when I was a kid and there too this was a famous story and most believed in it (but now it has died down). Every one in my neighborhood wrote the phrase " Indru poi nalai wa " Similar to " oh stree kal aana" on their walls. My family mostly didn't believe it but we didn't want to be left out so we wrote in our walls too, it used to be written in red kukum and there was a saying that if somehow a drop of blood mixes in it 'it' will drag you out of your house. I remember one of my friend writing with trembling hands 😂...and I didn't sleep a wink that night thinking she might be standing out infront of the door.
@@sabitamarndi9827lol, is this story ubiquitous in India because I grew up in Uttarakhand and we had a story of a witch who'd knock on doors at midnight and ask for a roti (flat bread) but the roti here means your children so if you've got one kiddo, she'd ask for one roti and so on. Only way to deter her is to not respond to her calls at all
This is a really solid list. A few more I'd recommend (off the top of my head): 1) Trapped (starring Rajkummar Rao) 2) Gangs of Wasseypur 1 & 2 (it's actually one big 5+ hour revenge epic split into 2 movies) 3) Udaan 4) Queen 5) Kahaani
@@TheBackFocus Vicky Kaushal from Masaan used to be a junior director’s asst during the filming of Gangs of Wasseypur. Later goes on to star in Masaan and in films like Uri and Sam Bahadur and many more.
Dont watch Kahaani, its bs, takes your for a ride that just doesnt add up in the end. Sorry but that movie defrauded me in the name of ‘taking cinematic liberty’
"Shwaas" a marathi film about an old man and his grandson who has to go through a rather unusual medical operation. The movie will bring tears your eyes.
Honorary mentions : Kill ( gory action packed thriller ) , ship of theseus ( fantastic thought provoking drama ) , raman raghav 2.0 ( story about an infamous serial killer) , gangs of wasseypur ( 2 part revenge epic ) , ugly ( story about a missing girl and a web of crazy characters) , kantara ( part supernatural thriller , part cultural exploration, great movie)
@@TheBackFocus would like you to explore a range of Indian Malayalam movies as well like Charlie, Drishyam, Oppam, Joji, 2018, Rorschach, Irul and the latest hit thriller with an insane twist : Kishkindha Kandam.
@@TheBackFocus I must say! this is the biggest insult you can do to Tamils and Telugus, of course, You don't know any better but I am just trying to give a fair warning that this is kind of an ugly trigger and you don't want this to reach the wrong audience.
As someone who loves watching movies and has seen a fair share of them, I found your video quite relatable! Since you mentioned at the beginning that "Indian comedy movies confuse me," here’s a curated list of my comedy recommendations with a bit of context for each: 1.Andaz Apna Apna (Classic slapstick comedy featuring iconic characters like Amar-Prem and their hilarious antics. A cult favorite for its timeless humor.) 2.Hera Pheri (both parts) (The OG comedy duo! A chaotic ride with Raju, Shyam, and Baburao in the first film, with the second amping up the absurdity. Iconic dialogues that are still quoted today!) 3. De Dana Dan (A laugh riot with over-the-top situations, a flooded hotel, and impeccable timing by Akshay Kumar and Suniel Shetty.) 4.Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (A heartfelt comedy with Sanjay Dutt redefining medical school in his own ‘bhai’ style, paired with amazing social lessons.) 5.Malamaal Weekly (Village humor at its finest! A lottery ticket, a dead man, and a whole lot of confusion.) 6.Khosla Ka Ghosla! (A subtle yet sharp comedy about middle-class struggles and land disputes, with pitch-perfect performances.) 7.Fukrey (Only the first film) (Youthful comedy packed with quirky characters, crazy schemes, and a lot of fun. Hunny and Choocha steal the show!) 8.Heyy Babyy (A mix of slapstick and emotional comedy, as three bachelors navigate life after finding a baby on their doorstep.) 9.Tanu Weds Manu (Rom-com comedy gold! Tanu’s boldness and Manu’s innocence create endless fun moments. The sequel is solid too!) 10,Delhi Belly (Edgy and dark comedy! Explores messy situations involving diamonds, gangsters, and IBS. Definitely for mature audiences.) 11.Go Goa Gone (India’s first zombie-comedy with Saif Ali Khan as a fake Russian mafia guy. Thrilling and hilarious in equal measure!) There are, of course, many other amazing comedy films, but I think these suit the bill perfectly for now. Let me know which one you watch first! 🍿
This list is riddled with mediocre fares like heyy baby and hera pheri 2 (its story is ripped off from lock stock and 2 smoking barells, and the make of movie is terrible, less budgetted movies make better looking production design, art direction and color contrast, its like it was shot on an expensive android phone and edited on a free video editor app, just eff ing heart breaking considering the original was so good and this one had some good gags too buy awefully executed)
@backbenchintellectual especially no smoking. Super deluxe while didn't break into the mainstream but I did see a lot of reviewers talking about it and giving it the praise it deserves. No smoking on the other hand is a cult film.

What about Thanmathra by Mohanlal?? I have heard a lot about that film, and I want to watch it, but I couldn't find it anywhere with English subtitles. I am from North India so the Hindi dub will also work fine. Do you have any idea how can I access that?
Oh...i miss the Indie movies of India....i was obsessed with these kind of movies and after the pandemic, they kind of just disappeared for the over the top action blockbusters...last true geniune good indie film i watched was Laapata Ladies and i highly recommend you guys watch it😊
Malayalam still makes those. Watch malayalam movies and you won't regret. All the 2024 malayalam movies were kind of blockbusters so it's easy to choose

This list is very varied and all are good films. You've picked everything from critically acclaimed underrated gems to massively popular fun movies. Kudos to your research.
@trueblu-f2r Bro India has an amazing girl of different cultures and therefore we also have different industries. They are Indian cinema, but just to embrass the unity we dont have to destroy the diversity.

I used to put on a lot of Bollywood stuff when I couldn't sleep back in the day, but I couldn't for the life of me tell you what any of those films were called. There's been a lot of great stuff coming out of India for ages though, & it's honestly hard to go wrong with anything that's achieved an international release. My recommendation, certainly if you enjoyed RRR, is the Dhoom trilogy (but especially the first two; the pacing is a little weird on the third). They're not quite as over the top & they're heist films at heart, but they're just joyfully silly in a similar way to The Fast & The Furious if that took itself a lot less seriously. I'm not sure they'd hold up to detailed analysis, but for something to feed your eyes & your adrenal glands, they'll do a very good job.

Have you seen the extremely popular ones? Like 3 Idiots, Dangal, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani? These movies has ruled the box office in recent times and rightfully so! All lf those are Bollywood though. If you want THE most popular modern Bollywood movies these are the ones to check out. Ruled Box Office, ruled TV streaming, and are just as popular on online streaming. Also, a nice way to get introduced to your channel. I'm personally watching a lot of foreign cinema these days, focusing on Chinese ones mostly, and I'll check out what more geographies you have to offer. Will help me decide what I'm watching next. Edit: Oh I know this channel, your videos have been recommended to me a LOT of times but I'm trying to explore other languages currently. Some of your videos have been in my watchlist, and I hope you start exploring other geographies as well.
Because you mentioned, Tumbbad I had to subscribe to your channel. There are so many mind-boggling movies they don't surface out because they are not well advertised.
Thank you. I've enjoyed your channel and I don't know much about Hindi cinema. I will watch these. I wanted to mention a movie that really touched me called "The Namesake" 2006 Starring Irrfan Khan and Kal Penn. Although not pure Hindi and more of a coming to America from a far away land it taught me a lot about the culture and I loved it.
It's interesting that for those of us who came to Indian movies from tabula rasa, the starting point is the time we started. My first trip to India was in 2005, and while I ended up doing more academic study that exposed me to earlier films, few of them cracked my favorites lists as much as those from 2005 and later. The first one I saw was Black (2005), which has the same premise as The Miracle Worker (Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan.) It's an industrial-strength tearjerker. If you cry at movies, be prepared to be a mess by the end of the movie. The star, Rani Mukerji, is very versatile. She was also in a sports comedy called Dil Bole Hadippa, about a girl who disguises herself as a boy to join a cricket team, and hijinks ensue. That's probably more to your taste than the slapstick comedies you mention. The most recent movie I really liked was the adaptation of The Archies by the acclaimed director Zoya Akhtar. It was an odd, odd choice but lots of fun.
Great list. Spot on. The distinction was always there - Masala vs Art films (mainstream vs Indie). Do find out for yourself. Would be interesting to see another perspective. There are some gems from earlier, not sure if they are available on OTT. Ardh Satya comes to mind.
Ritesh Batra's Photograph starring Nawaz Uddin Siddiqui is also a great movie. It somehow reminded me of French movies and then I looked up, the cinematographers were an American guy and a french dude.
Swadesh Lagan My name is khan Detective byomkesh bakshy Dil bechara(my fav) This films are not commercially viewable like the ones we see in bollywood, but are expectional, specially detective byomkesh bakshy
Correction: Probably you found the Hindi dubbed version of RRR and Eega, but they aren't Bollywood movies, rather Tollywood in Telugu language. Thank you for your list, I added some to my watchlist. You asked for recommendation, so here is mine for slow burn, story driven Indian movies additionally for others' recommendation (Drishyam is great!): - Pather Panchali (1955, Bengali) - Sholay (1975, Hindi, Western movie loosely inspired by Kurosawa's 7 samurai) - Elements trilogy by Deepa Mehta (hard to find) - Black (2005, Hindi) - Taare Zameen Par (2007, Hindi) - Barfi! (2012, Hindi) - Habaddi (2019, Marathi) - Super Deluxe (2019, Tamil) - Kumbalangi Nights (2019, Malayalam) - Nasir (2020, Tamil) - Vadh (2022, Hindi) - Laapataa Ladies (2024, Hindi) - Aadujeevitham: The Goat Life (2024, Malayalam) Can someone recommend me Telugu and Kannada movies in this genre (story driven, slow burn, no violence)? I watched mainly their mainstream big hits, action dramas.

I would recommend "pyaasa" (1957) and aawara (1951). Both are the gems of the older indian cinema. Awara was a massive hit worldwide, in that era, even including places like china and ussr.
Indian cinema is so diverse that indians are still unaware of so many masterpieces . More than 1500 movies release in different film industries within india. Still I recommend some - 1. Amish (Assamese language) 2.dangal 3. Bajrangi bhaijaan 4. Maharaja 5. Andhadhun 6. Kantara etc
@@anuraktisimple it's a masterpiece. Very few movies tend to explore this human emotion called "disgust". You feel it disgusting and the movie wins here itself.
Some recommendations Gangs of wasseypur (both parts) Baby (spy thriller) special 26 (heist thriller based on true stories) Bhool bhulaiya (psychological comedy horror) Jolly Llb series (dark comedy courtroom drama) 3 idiots Oh My God Bajrangi Bhaijaan Dangal Airlift Badhai ho Andhadhun Bareilly Ki Barfi
You are absolutely right. Some of the other comedies you mentioned are something which have a unique Indian-ness to them, so it'd be hard for a foreigner to get the cultural context.
This was such a thoughtful and insightful video! Even as someone who grew up watching Hindi films, I feel like the industry hasn’t been at its best in recent years. It’s also frustrating how Western audiences often reduce Bollywood-and Indian cinema as a whole-to just over-the-top, clichéd movies. While that can be true sometimes, it’s so refreshing to see an analysis like this that highlights the other side. Definitely adding *Newton* to my watchlist now-can’t wait to check it out!
Theres a batch of comedy movies that westerners can relate to without going to the realm of over the top bollywoodness , some are Doctor, Delhi belly, Madgaon Express, Lootcase, Black male etc.
Honourable mention: Piku, Dear Zindagi, Swades, Like Stars on Earth there are ton of great films but can't remember from the top of my head. Those usually gets buried under action heavy subpar films
I think you should also watch "peepli live" . It is a very good movie that shows the reality of Indian society , its government and its media .... It is hard , it is fun and a really thought provoking movie ....
Some old classics i would recommend-andaaz apna apna(feels like an older evergreen 3 idiots, the jokes do hold up and i still love it) and sholay(ONE OF THE BEST HINDI MOVIES OF ALL TIME, genuinely legendary and the cultural impact is insane, it is pretty old but most hindi speakers have heard of some reference of it if not seen the movie, very emotional too)
A Wednesday (Bollywood )is fantastic watch. It's a thriller where a man has bom* plant all over mumbai and has cat and mouse chase with the police. In same spirit, Drishyam (malyalam) and Kaithi (Tamil) follows. Drisham though has who did it factor meanwhile Kaithi with it's non linear plotline keeps the suspense intact. In older movies, Kaun (Bollywood) had me in chills.
no2: Eega, or "Makkhi" in the more general lingo, Hindi, literally meaning "(house)fly"(the insect fly., not the verb), is one of my personal favourite and a very endearing movie. mostly because the plot is actually so sweet and nice, a little bit of bittersweet feeling that you get at the end of EVERY great story. even the cgi sticks up pretty well for an old indian movie. genuinely such a good movie with lots of sybolism
Adding everything here to my list (been meaning to watch Tumbbad)! A few Tamil movies I'd recommend: 1. Super Deluxe: An anthology film spanning multiple storylines (and genres!) that eventually converge. 2. Kaithi A convict who was just freed and on his way to see his family gets embroiled in a job to help the police. 3. Otha Seruppu A chamber piece, where a murder suspect explains his methods to the police. 4. Maharaja The less said about this one the better (don't want to risk spoiling any twists) - a barber seeks vengeance after his home is burglarized, telling the police his "lakshmi", a garbage can, has been taken. I'm Tamil myself, but grew up on Hollywood films, and only just started reconnecting with my Tamil roots through cinema. =)
In Tamil language I really loved the LCU movies (Kaithi, Vikram, Leo so far - the last one too violent though); Ponniyin Selvan was difficult to understand without knowing the story but it was an epic; and Nasir, a shorter movie from 2020. One more vote for Super Deluxe.
Some films I'd love for you to check out : Sardar Udham (Vicky Kaushal) Guzaarish (Hrithik Roshan) Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (Hrithik Roshan) Lakshya (Hrithik Roshan) Veer-Zaara (Shahrukh Khan) Bareilly ki Barfi (Rajkumar Rao) Andhadhun (Ayushmann Khurana) Dangal (Aamir Khan) October (Varun Dhawan)
This list is truly amazing. There are many more hidden gems. One hilarious comedy that comes to mind is Delhi Belly. The only thing I didn't like about it was they kept just one song in the movie when each song in the OST was a rock masterpiece!
*ALL MOVIES ARE MUST WATCH* Barfi (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) Dangal Guzaarish Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara Drishyam( hindi) Queen Andhadunn Taare Zameen Par Devdas Bajirao Mastani Dil Chahata Hain 3 Idiots

Newton is a film based on outskirts remote jungle village of Chhattisgarh ( a state in India). I belong to Chhattisgarh and came to know the reality of these region only when I saw this film.. It was an eye opener for me.. Being so close to these people yet so far,.. The pain, the dilemma of choosing between what's right and whats needed to be done,.... Its a film that questions your morality... Man I cried at the ending.... I am glad you chose this film over others...
The acting in brahmayugam was phenomenon but i don't really like the ending, the new malayalam movie kishkinda kaandam was worth it i would include it replacing brahmayugam
Older ones have a ton of gems. one can say that golden period of indian movies lies back in the day when they were willing to take more risks over regular action-romance-comedy that dominated from 80s-90s era For a little bit older, try- Swades, Rang De Basanti, Dangal, Hera Pheri (2000 one), Go Goa Gone (last one is just stupid comedy, but its fun) For quite a bit older, try- Pyaasa, Mera Naam Joker and Sholay. Sholay is classic 7 samurai/western inspired movie. But it has an indian blend to it and honestly, its among, if not the most popular hindi movie ever
I would highly recommend- Ship of Theseus, its by the same team who made Tummbad, its the kind of movie which would change one’s life - if they understand the message behind the movie. Do check it out if you haven’t already. A couple of others for me are Black and Aakhon Dekhi.
You need to watch Malayalam movies. They make the best movies in India. Nothing over the top, just pure kino. 2024 has been especially good for Malayalam cinema to the extent that a Malayalam movie is one of the frontrunners for the Oscars this year - All We Imagine As Light. Since it's only the 4th largest film industry in India, it does not get much pan-India attention but quality wise Malayalam film industry is the best in the country.

Have you ever heard of a movie called Jill Jung Juk. It's a Tamil movie which manages to be one of the funniest, most stylistic, and most creative movies of all time and go completely unnoticed.
If you really are looking for good Indian movies, there's a long list because there are thousands of great regional movies. Every state in India has its own unique language and many dialects, cuisine, dance form and dress. That's the diversity that we have. Hence, I have been watching Tamil, Telugu and Bangla movies since my childhood. Off late even Kannada, Marathi and Gujarati industry have been giving great movies. So there's an unlimited number of movies to watch.
Don't overhype them. Just like Bollywood, they make 10 percent good cinema. 20 percent intresting. And the rest are shitty. We have to see the whole filmography of south Indians movie.
Some of the finest and most content driven movies come mollywood which is highly underrated , the comments section seems to hesitate to mention about Mollywood because trust me once explore this rabbit hole all the others might loose their limelight
@TheBackFocus just trust me ,start with Kumbaligi nights a sweet movie but if you dug deep its much more than that and next watch Iratta and Ela veezha Punchira both film's ending is something else you will never guess . VM also made a mindblowing TV show recently titled Jubilee and it's on Prime Video. His latest Netflix film CTRL was also good imo
RRR is a movie that got really popular in the west some time ago especially the song naacho naacho. So Americans pretty much only know RRR as a representation of Indian movies really.
11:53, if you understood the culture, you'll call it immersed, not dumped. Overall, your understanding of Indian films and culture is very limited but full points for trying. Good luck!
I actually considered using a different more sensitive word given the nature of the ritual, but I couldn’t think of one. Thank you for pointing that out. I’m still learning!
That's not true@@user-qx9vw5tm8h
While these sort of slow dramas have always existed for a long time in Indian cinema, movies like Masaan were still very important to bringing them to the forefront, as it was during the mid 2010s where movies like these caused a shift in audience perspective and caused more and more studios to make such slow and story or character focused movies. However, it seems like the 2020s has again shifted tides with the growing popularity of mass movies, leading to fewer such movies getting big and the industry again prioritizing large scale action mass movies.
LOL'S, YEAH, I EXACTLY. I TRUE! 😄
Masaan is such a special movie, I watched it knowing nothing about the story and was blown away.

I loved a movie called 'Trapped' .
Rajkumar Rao delivers a jaw-dropping performance, making you feel every ounce of his fear, frustration, and desperation. 07:33 A bit of explanation for the non-hindi audience:
The phrase "O Stree, kal aana" means "Hey Stree (lady), come tomorrow", which was a way to delay the witch's visit by asking her each day to come the next day instead.

@@sabitamarndi9827lol, is this story ubiquitous in India because I grew up in

As someone who loves watching movies and has seen a fair share of them, I found your video quite relatable! Since you mentioned at the beginning that "Indian comedy movies confuse me," here’s a curated list of my comedy recommendations with a bit of context for each:
1.Andaz Apna Apna
(Classic slapstick comedy featuring iconic characters like Amar-Prem and their hilarious antics. A cult favorite for its timeless humor.)
2.Hera Pheri (both parts)
(The OG comedy duo! A chaotic ride with Raju, Shyam, and Baburao in the first film, with the second amping up the absurdity. Iconic dialogues that are still quoted today!)
3. De Dana Dan
(A laugh riot with over-the-top situations, a flooded hotel, and impeccable timing by Akshay Kumar and Suniel Shetty.)
4.Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.
(A heartfelt comedy with Sanjay Dutt redefining medical school in his own ‘bhai’ style, paired with amazing social lessons.)
5.Malamaal Weekly
(Village humor at its finest! A lottery ticket, a dead man, and a whole lot of confusion.)
6.Khosla Ka Ghosla!
(A subtle yet sharp comedy about middle-class struggles and land disputes, with pitch-perfect performances.)
7.Fukrey (Only the first film)
(Youthful comedy packed with quirky characters, crazy schemes, and a lot of fun. Hunny and Choocha steal the show!)
8.Heyy Babyy
(A mix of slapstick and emotional comedy, as three bachelors navigate life after finding a baby on their doorstep.)
9.Tanu Weds Manu
(Rom-com comedy gold! Tanu’s boldness and Manu’s innocence create endless fun moments. The sequel is solid too!)
10,Delhi Belly
(Edgy and dark comedy! Explores messy situations involving diamonds, gangsters, and IBS. Definitely for mature audiences.)
11.Go Goa Gone
(India’s first zombie-comedy with Saif Ali Khan as a fake Russian mafia guy. Thrilling and hilarious in equal measure!)
There are, of course, many other amazing comedy films, but I think these suit the bill perfectly for now. Let me know which one you watch first! 🍿
Thank you so much for this list, you put a lot of detail into it. I’ve haven’t heard of most of them. I’ll add them to my list!

Also, a nice way to get introduced to your channel. I'm personally watching a lot of foreign cinema these days, focusing on Chinese ones mostly, and I'll check out what more geographies you have to offer. Will help me decide what I'm watching next.

Oh The Namesake is great! Simple, beautiful story. That was my intro to Irrfan Khan.

You are absolutely right. Some of the other comedies you mentioned are something which have a unique Indian-ness to them, so it'd be hard for a foreigner to get the cultural context.
U should explore some classic bollywood love story films. I swear they are good.

Thanks for these recommendations!
You made my day into a very lovely day. Lunchbox. Thank you.
no2: Eega, or "Makkhi" in the more general lingo, Hindi, literally meaning "(house)fly"(the insect fly., not the verb), is one of my personal favourite and a very endearing movie. mostly because the plot is actually so sweet and nice, a little bit of bittersweet feeling that you get at the end of EVERY great story. even the cgi sticks up pretty well for an old indian movie. genuinely such a good movie with lots of sybolism
This is a great Indian movie video 😊❤ All these movies deserves attention.. Love from Northeast India.. 🎉
Tell any good movie from NE India
Adding everything here to my list (been meaning to watch Tumbbad)! A few Tamil movies I'd recommend:
1. Super Deluxe:
An anthology film spanning multiple storylines (and genres!) that eventually converge.
2. Kaithi
A convict who was just freed and on his way to see his family gets embroiled in a job to help the police.
3. Otha Seruppu
A chamber piece, where a murder suspect explains his methods to the police.
4. Maharaja
The less said about this one the better (don't want to risk spoiling any twists) - a barber seeks vengeance after his home is burglarized, telling the police his "lakshmi", a garbage can, has been taken.
I'm Tamil myself, but grew up on Hollywood films, and only just started reconnecting with my Tamil roots through cinema. =)
Love the recommendations. Thanks!
One more special mention: Kadaisi Vivasayi, you'll get confused whether the movie is drama or documentary...
Maharaja is nothing but a ripped off oldboy.
Don't watch it
In Tamil language I really loved the LCU movies (Kaithi, Vikram, Leo so far - the last one too violent though);
Ponniyin Selvan was difficult to understand without knowing the story but it was an epic;
and Nasir, a shorter movie from 2020.
One more vote for Super Deluxe.
i am so proud of you for watching. please watch more and do another summer list.
Some films I'd love for you to check out :
Sardar Udham (Vicky Kaushal)
Guzaarish (Hrithik Roshan)
Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (Hrithik Roshan)
Lakshya (Hrithik Roshan)
Veer-Zaara (Shahrukh Khan)
Bareilly ki Barfi (Rajkumar Rao)
Andhadhun (Ayushmann Khurana)
Dangal (Aamir Khan)
October (Varun Dhawan)
This list is truly amazing. There are many more hidden gems. One hilarious comedy that comes to mind is Delhi Belly. The only thing I didn't like about it was they kept just one song in the movie when each song in the OST was a rock masterpiece!
*ALL MOVIES ARE MUST WATCH*
Barfi (Priyanka Chopra Jonas)
Dangal
Guzaarish
Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara
Drishyam( hindi)
Queen
Andhadunn
Taare Zameen Par
Devdas
Bajirao Mastani
Dil Chahata Hain
3 Idiots
I’ve heard of Andhadhun, Devdas, Barfi, and 3 Idiots. I’ll check those out and the rest, thanks!
You should've included malayalam movies. Which is one of the best industry in india. Know for realistic movies and different movies from mainstream bollywood and typical mass masala films. You should watch some and include them in your next videos. Here are some recommendations
Kishkinda khaandam
Drishyam
Aavesham
Kumbalangi Nights
Manjummel Boys
The goat life
Brahmayugam
Premalu
ARM
Identity
Rifle club
Premam
Bangalore Days
Charlie
Minnal Murali
And Much more
This list contains of every genre you can possible imagine of (most of them are released in 2024) which is rare in bollywood, tollywood etc(they be making only action movies)
Agreed
Truly the best and underrated
There are more classics in the past years. But 2024 was exceptional for malayalam cinema.
Bro how did you take out time to write all these. I dont know what are you gaining out of this. Slaves to the fair skinned validation mentality 😂😂
Your list legit made my day, it contains some of the best movies ive seen 😭, all in all great video!! Hope u explore more movies that interest you!!
There are two more flims which many indian themselves not even heard about but they are masterpiece -:
1.bramayugam(psychedelic horror)🔥💀
2.wlecome home(watch at your own risk)☠️
This really is just bollywood films and Eega (the best of the bunch). Not Indian gems you should have added more films from other industries if you want to use Indian. Lots of bollywood only fans here saying its not a big deal to call Rajamouli a pure telugu director Tamil which shows how little worth these North Indian Hindi cow belt losers give South india cause if we say Bollywood movies speak Urdu and not Hindi they would call us traitors to iNDIA..
Masaan is one of the rare modern films which made me cry.
Glad to see appreciation of Tummbad movie!❤❤ It deserves a well fanbase
Shouldve included malayalam movies like The goat life, aavesham, manjummel Boys, brahmayugam, premam, bangalore days
The acting in brahmayugam was phenomenon but i don't really like the ending, the new malayalam movie kishkinda kaandam was worth it i would include it replacing brahmayugam
i would also recommend maharaja it's come out recently, I has that signature nolan non linear story with a really good plot twist
Tumbbad is a real masterpiece.
Na 🤣
Older ones have a ton of gems. one can say that golden period of indian movies lies back in the day when they were willing to take more risks over regular action-romance-comedy that dominated from 80s-90s era
For a little bit older, try- Swades, Rang De Basanti, Dangal, Hera Pheri (2000 one), Go Goa Gone (last one is just stupid comedy, but its fun)
For quite a bit older, try- Pyaasa, Mera Naam Joker and Sholay. Sholay is classic 7 samurai/western inspired movie. But it has an indian blend to it and honestly, its among, if not the most popular hindi movie ever
Watch - aligarh its very similar to newton. Rajkumar rao & manoj bajpayee are the actors. Its just pure great acting
It’s much more similar to imitation game if it was WAY dark. The messaging, the pain is something I had not felt before.
Learned something new. Thanks, I’ll check out some Malayalam films!
@@TheBackFocus Yeah I agree with above comment and In my opinion Malayalam movie industry produced the most amazing original content in the world not just in India and that too continuously and In my view every actor is superlative....
I have watched 123 malayalam movie so far in my life although its low in num but I have never rated any malayalam movie below 6/10..... Most of them are 8...
Watch Bramhayugam from this year... its great and it has superstar Mamootty.... He is one of the greatest actor of India......
and my total movie watched count currently is 3863 as of yesterday wanted to crossed 4000 this year but anyway.... And this year I have watched total 387 and there is still a week left before 2025 so it might cross 400... I just love cinema.... Not to say any form of art... My anime watch list is over 1000 btw but there are still thousands of more to watch....
One fun fact I want to tell is that Irfaan Khan actually rejected a very big hollywood movie because he was in between the shooting of Lunch box , and that famous movie is currently one of the best ever made. "Interstellar".

Hey, love this line up. They all truly are incredible.
I would love to recommend - 'Aankhon Dekhi' and 'Angreji mein kehte hai'
8 am metro movie I've recently watched i hope you liked it..☺️
Also 96 and colour photo
Bro. This is a really good list.
Watch sonchiriaiya one of underrated gems of india. this movie hits you so hard.
My list is completely different, but i still 'liked' your video - i loved your presentation.
Try "sardar udham" (oscar worthy) believe me you won't disappoint
Have you ever heard of a movie called Jill Jung Juk. It's a Tamil movie which manages to be one of the funniest, most stylistic, and most creative movies of all time and go completely unnoticed.
You should definitely watch "Super Deluxe", I am 100% sure you would love it.
Brandon Do Watch: "Mother India" (1957)
Added!
How did you miss Malayalam movies. They make the best movies in India.
Don't overhype them. Just like Bollywood, they make 10 percent good cinema. 20 percent intresting. And the rest are shitty.
We have to see the whole filmography of south Indians movie.
According to u
The shittiest of Malayalam movies are way better in terms of script, direction and acting compared to general Bollywood movies.
@@swordofdurga I like to delusion in which you live 🙃😜
Very good assortment of films. Covered quite a variety❤
Some of the finest and most content driven movies come mollywood which is highly underrated , the comments section seems to hesitate to mention about Mollywood because trust me once explore this rabbit hole all the others might loose their limelight
You’re maybe the fourth person in the comments to bring up Mollywood. I’m definitely intrigued now.
@TheBackFocus just trust me ,start with Kumbaligi nights a sweet movie but if you dug deep its much more than that and next watch Iratta and Ela veezha Punchira both film's ending is something else you will never guess . Or you know what just search 'Why mollywood is different from other indian movies" ?
@@TheBackFocus Just that you know, Mollywood= Malayalam Cinema i will just name 5 Movies from different genres -
1- Brahmyuagm (horror) shot in black and white in 2024
2 - Kishkinda Kaandam , Iratta , Ela Veezha Punchira Mystery Drama /Thriller all are equally good
3 - Thanmathra - Family Drama - acting of the main character is top notch
4 - Kumbaligi Nights - i don't even know which genre this is but certainly can say magic of cinema
5 - Manjummal Boys - Survival Thriller making 👌
Bonus - The Goat life ,Avesham ,Joji ( loosely a Macbeth Adaptation)
More movies you should watch: Chak De India, Rang De Basanti, Wake Up Sid, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Luck By Chance, Gangs of Wasseypur, Dangal, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Andhadhun, Gully Boy
There's a good mix here. From patriotic films, to slice of life, to fresh concept films, to some really decent biopics and these are just the popular ones. There's a lot more good cinema coming out of India especially in the recent years
Check out movies by two of my favourite Indian directors, Zoya Akhtar and Vikramaditya Motwane. VM also made a mindblowing TV show recently titled Jubilee and it's on Prime Video. His latest Netflix film CTRL was also good imo
I was hoping you'd mention RRR. It's the most Movie I can imagine being packed into a single "movie".
It’s like Movie: The Movie
RRR. I thought Peter Bradshaw's: "It's got everything apart from subtlety," was a great review of a truly great film :-)
Its like the most mid movie to represent India lol
RRR is a movie that got really popular in the west some time ago especially the song naacho naacho. So Americans pretty much only know RRR as a representation of Indian movies really.
@@solanumtuberosa filmmakers like james cameroon and steven spielberg gushing over it but I think you are better than them
Unique concept, thriller, suspense - Drishyam 1, 2. It's a masterpiece in storywriting. Also, Maharaja(netflix).
Where's malayalam?
Dumped in ego of malyalis
Lol
11:53, if you understood the culture, you'll call it immersed, not dumped. Overall, your understanding of Indian films and culture is very limited but full points for trying. Good luck!
I actually considered using a different more sensitive word given the nature of the ritual, but I couldn’t think of one. Thank you for pointing that out. I’m still learning!
Try these comedies:
1. Hera Pheri
2. Bheja Fry
3. Bareli Ki Barfi
4. Janne Bhi Do Yaroon
5. Golmaal (1979)
6. Munna Bhai MBBS
7. Chupke Chupke
8. Angoor
9. Parosan 1968
10. Hindi Medium
