Between The Buried and Me "Extremophile Elite." They are on record several times citing Mr. Bungle as inspiration. They do not have a single blase piece in their entire anthology, each and every one is uniquely identifiable. Their shortest actual full piece is in the high four minutes, and their longest is 17 plus minutes. I've never gotten so much variety in music while still enjoying the feel of the quintessentially BTBAM riffs. Any song by them is worthy of mention, IMO. Great reaction, thank you!

The thing about Blake and Between the Buried and Me, is that they have been doing it for nearly 20 years. This isn't a new "Internet" influenced shit. They have always done what they love, record labels fall into place, and I've been appreciating and inspired by it since 2005. Music hasn't been the same since.

They’ve been around a while. Like back during the MySpace days they were signed to Victory Records. I first heard them on a free DVD I got. It had the video to Alaska on it. Honestly, I wasn’t too blown away by that song but it sounded like decent metalcorey music. I saw one of their CD’s at the mall and grabbed it up. It was the album Colors. I popped it in and I was like “What the fuck is this? What even is this? Wtf is going on here?” The more I listened to it, the more I began to absolutely love it. It is right up there in my all time favorites. Metal, jazz, baroque, polka, Goddamned bluegrass, Pink Floydy shit. It is one beautiful clusterfuck. A masterpiece. A non-stop rollercoaster ride. The whole album is one big continuous song. I made the mistake of falling to sleep with it on repeat. Don’t do that. I got weird ass dreams from it.

A lot of people are recommending Colors as a good starting point (and it is an awesome album!), honestly though - it's hard to go wrong with any song from any of their albums. Everything from Alaska to Automata II are on frequent rotation in my car - and it's been a long time since I've been able to listen to a single band this much without getting sick of them. It's hard to point to any one song as being the 'ultimate' Blake Richardson portfolio song as he does so much cool stuff across their entire discography. But if I were to name a few for some individual moments in time, or just simply being genuine favourites drumming-wise: Obfuscation, The Coma Machine, Disease Injury Madness, Augment of Rebirth, Extremophile Elite, Telos, Bloom, Condemned to the Gallows, Blot, Voice of Trespass, Turn on the Darkness... Honestly though, just listen to everything they've written and you won't be disappointed.
Was happy to hear you mention Bernard Purdie, by the way! I've been working on this track myself and picked up on the half-time shuffle straight away as though it was straight out of Rosanna. Something I was happy that I put time and effort into learning a few years back! Dunno if I can make it groove as nicely as Blake and Bernard, but I can try

If you find yourself with a spare hour, I highly recommend you watch Future Sequence: Live at the Fidelitorium. Amazing live album from BTBAM.

The real question is, who doesn't love Mr Bungle?

    To recommend:
    • A specific video of Jon Karel's (formerly of The Number Twelve Looks Like You) called "Jon Karel performs "alicia" by the tango group". It's out of control.
    • Billy Rymer of The Dillinger Escape Plan. Any video of him is likely to be great, but in particular their song "When I Lost My Bet".
    • Lyle Cooper, formerly of The Faceless, in a video called "The Faceless - Ancient Covenant - Drum cam". I think you'll be especially tickled by his physical form while performing.

Do Jimmy Chamberlin The Smashing Pumpkins Pinkpop 94 playing Cherub Rock, I Am One, or Geek USA. They got the drum cam uploaded from the whole show. Or An Ode to No One love at the Metro. He goes fucking crazy during that one.

Mr. Bungle is a big influence in their sound. BTBAM has a lot of songs that are way more avant garde (e.g. Laser Speed, Fossil Genera, Bloom, Voice of Trespass).

There are several other awesome videos available of Blake, some he's put up, of solo playthroughs of BTBAM's stuff. I'd love to see what you think of their other stuff.

If you enjoy those heavy parts and mathy mods, please check out Eliot Hoffman with Car Bomb. He also has some videos of him improvising over Steve Reich pieces.

I’m glad this showed up in my feed and I’ve subscribed but,
    dude,
give ‘Colors’ a listen if you don’t know BtBaM!
edit: it took them a lot of material to start “getting away” with things but that’s, like, the QUINTESSENTIAL disc

    Fuck yes.
This band is a rabbit hole FYI.
I'd recommend Ectopic Stroll or Coma Machine as the next react.
The best albums to explore by them are Parallax 2, and Colors in my opinion. Both cohesive concept albums, as is their norm
