Congrats on trying ESFM! ESFM and the ES5506 go so well together, and they both start with ES. It’s funny that they’re completely unrelated.

@@arashikou6661 Actually, they somewhat are kinda related. Both these chips were used on the gravis ultrasound extreme afaik, wich is kinda interesting!

@@YgorG No way! I had no idea there was a real device that combined the two. That’s cool to see!

@@arashikou6661I know the ESFM was Ensoniq's implementation of the OPL3 with some enhancements, but what about the ES5506? is that a PCM chip?

@@tcscomment So, first of all, a relevant correction. The “ES” in ESFM isn’t short for Ensoniq. It’s short for ESS, Electronic Speech Systems.
This is relevant because the “ES” in ES5506 _is_ short for Ensoniq. The Ensoniq 5506, aka “OTTO”, was a sample-based synthesis chip with a huge (for its time) 32-voice polyphony. Although it was mostly used in musical instruments, it did appear in a number of Japanese arcade games. (To my mind, the most important of which was powering the sweet, sweet soundtrack of Elevator Action Returns.) But a lot of people are most familiar with its sound thanks to Gravis Ultrasound. GUS was one of the major DOS PC sound card brands in the 90s, and the heart of their cards was a slightly modified ES5506 called the GF1.
