Sealed Aquarium Ecosphere (Aquascape in a Jar)

  • "Make an ecosphere using aquarium plants" you say? I've been getting requests to do this for awhile now, but say no more because it's here! I had a lot of fun doing this one and I hope that it works out long-term. Obviously it's somewhat experimental, but I don't see any reason why this shouldn't work. Time will tell!
I should mention that some of the plants used were grown immersed, so you may have noticed some melting leaves near the end of the video. That's nothing to worry about though. It just has to run its course until we get some acclimated underwater plant growth.
If you have any comments, suggestions or questions, leave them down in the comments! Also for additional content like this, photos of my projects, updates and more, then be sure to follow me on Instagram @serpadesign.

I've been getting requests to do an ecosphere like this for awhile now. Like I said in the video it really needs to grow in, but let me know what you think about it in its current state. Enjoy!

5:15 **FYI, you can fill the "air pocket" at the top by using a piece of tubing.** Insert one end into the air pocket and the other end connected to "room air'. The pressure of the water outside the jar will force the air out of the pocket. One thing to note, the level of the water outside the jar must be the same or higher than the level inside the jar.

Definitely a topic I'm going to have to discuss in depth. Scaping is a universal art form. If you can scape a terrarium, you can scape an aquarium and so on. The only gap is in understanding the materials.

@@reichrunner1 they respirate 24/7, not only when the lights are off. But that'll just cycle the carbon around. When they have used the CO2 already in the water they'll stop growing, and that'll happen fast.

You could use water fully saturated with CO2 and then for every maintenance session make sure the water you open the jar up in is fully charged with CO2 as well. Might work. No Lights for sure! just room light with nothing direct. It's beautiful. I hope it works. I would think of it as a labor of love... I mean, you have to fill up a 10-gallon aquarium to do maintenance
