I’ve learnt more about this case from a witness than anything I’ve seen on the news. Reporting on the ground is a thing of the past, so thank you for doing the job of the media.

Maybe it's the future of journalism.
We can no longer trust the media or the government or the police to tell the actual news, better if local people go out and speak to everyday people and put it online.
Modern journalism has been hijacked and gagged.

I’m from Salford born and raised there. My mother had a vision for a better future for us and when I was eighteen she put me on a plane to Texas to visit friends of hers. That was in 1983 now I’m sixty years old and still living in Texas (retired). When I go back to visit my sister it’s sad to see the pubs are all gone and a lot of the shops are boarded up. I feel very lucky that my mother had that vision but very sad for my sisters who still live there.

I recently left the Gorton area to move to the Peak District. The final straw was walking past a passed out drug addict with a needle still in his arm at 8am with my two young girls. I’ve lived in some rough places in my time but Manchester was a joke. The people, pollution, politics, policing, mindset and violence is a disgrace. And for some reason the housing prices are high. To be perfectly honest, it is not the poverty that causes this.
I grew up in poverty but back when I was a child my parents took a pride in their surrounding area. They didn’t drop litter they swept the pavement in front of their house and kept everything clean and tidy. In other words they respected their country. Children were given love and attention and discipline. Something sadly lacking in today’s society where parents typically ignore the children their minds on their in their phones all the time. I am Scottish but i live in Manchester and all I hear is people shouting that they are proud to be English, well if you’re proud to be English clean up your act and clean up your country, because right now it’s one large slum and absolutely nothing to be proud of. Things need to change. When I was young, police walked their beats and they knew everyone in their communities. Now they sit in cars, detached from everyone in their area, not knowing anyone. The days where police protected and served are gone. So the government needs to change the laws and allow people to protect and serve themselves, because right now the law states that if we protect ourselves, we are the ones charged with assault. Apparently, we are just meant to stand there and allow someone to take a machete or a knife to us; a have at it kind of thing. Well, not this lady, come at me with a machete and I’ll hurt you, law be damned. Until the police get back to walking their beats and protecting the citizens that live there, I’ll protect myself. Period.

Years ago when there was a death on the street in the community, natural or otherwise people would all draw their curtains for a period of time as a mark of respect. It was a common practice and I've seen it happen in more modern times living in the North West after the death of a young boy everyone had their curtains drawn for a day or two.

    • @paparoach007
      @paparoach007 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@sweeneytodd011 I can give a little background or history about the curtain drawing after a death. This "tradition" with curtain drawing was created as a mark of respect to a deceased person and/or to the family of the deceased to give them privacy and time to grieve properly without prying eyes. It became a thing in the 18th Century in the UK (maybe in some other parts of the world too) because of the amount of people dying due to health issues and deteriorating conditions at the time.
There are other "traditions" we have with different coloured curtains but you can look that up online yourselves if you want to know more about it.

I grew up around Gorton in the 1960's and went to school just at the back of where you were filming. I honestly don't remember it being that much different. There were stabbings back then. There were murders back then. Don't forget that's where the Moors murderers were from orginally.
During the 1970's there was investment into the areas but by the 1980's it was just as bad. I lived next to drug dealers in the 1980's and the streets were filthy back then. I lived in Gorton until the early 90's and couldn't let my kids play out on the street because there were crack addicts on the street corners.
I eventually moved out to the suburbs where I live now but even there there are pockets of crime. It isn't the lack of investment. It's the individual people who make bad choices, a lack of education and a lack of awareness that there is a different way to live.
I don't pretend to know what the answer is. You can invest into an area but unless the people take pride in what they have it will soon deteriorate back into squalor. In this country there seems to be a mentality that the government should look after you and that mentality is worse in deprived areas. It's almost like learned helplessness where people think that is their lot in life and they they can't escape it so take no responosility whatsoever for their own surroundings or their own behaviour.

Not a bird anywhere. Not even a sparrow the whole area looks run down and dead. Litter everywhere potholes in all the footpaths run down buildings and grotty shops. I left England in the mid 60s and this is not the place I remember as a child. To see things in this condition is quite heart-breaking actually I am lost for words.

I’ve family in Groton, other family that moved out a few years ago, lived in West Gorton myself many years ago for a short while ( where the very first Shameless series was filmed ), got the scar to prove it and that’s not just a saying.
You get people that run an area down but most are good people, keep their house and garden, even the streets clean, just take a look at the streets around where that terrible event happened.
Moston and New Moston are exactly the same, most just getting on with their lives but there’s others that don’t give a s#£t, a lot go down the wrong path in the suburbs of any town or city as you it’s the same in Liverpool, Birmingham etc.
It’s at night when you see what these places are really like, they won’t like the camera though Billy.

When you subtract the interest payments on National debt along with long term liabilities like NHS +PFI, Education, Benefits, Pensions, Foreign Investment, you end up with little to pay the said interest on the Debt and local services such as street cleaning are a outcome of all that. National Debt currently £3 Trillion rising rapidly since Blair 1997. GDP is an allusion as it is all long term debt.

Moston used to be a predominantly owner occupier area but in the last few decades has degraded into mostly rental. Young people used to be able to afford a first home there but can't nowadays because even for the 2 up 2 down terraces they are priced out by landlords, often foreign nationals, who buy sight unseen and pay over the odds because they know they can charge between £800 and £1000 rent per month!
That's where a big part of the scandal lies - absolute profiteering. We urgently need some form of rent control in the UK. Who pays those sky high rents? the taxpayer does via housing benefits, that's who! the poor people who live in them cant afford those kind of rents from what income they have, If they could then they'd be able to get a mortgage on a house somewhere better than Moston!
I'm not advocating for a lower cap on housing benefits because that would just increase homelessness and suffering in the short term, but I am in favour of a cap on rents to discourage absentee fat cat landlords from hoovering up housing stock.
I make no comment on the huge influx of migrants over the same period save to say that it hasn't "helped".
Incidentally the demolished half timbered building is what remains of Hough Hall which may have been built around 1604, when Shakespeare was writing plays and Guy Fawkes was plotting against Parliament!. It's a crying shame that such a part of local heritage has met such an end after roughly half a century of neglect.
