    Dwarves are brought water when wounded is to motivate them to get healthy. With booze they would lie down "sick" forever. It makes perfect sense.

    A thing to remember about kitchen permissions: tallow is available for cooking by default. After you render a new type of fat make sure to deselect that if you want to use it for making soap

    10:25-10:30 if you find that you can't make soap and you are missing unrotten tallow, make sure you are not cooking your tallow. Very important for soap making.

    • @lethrahn
      @lethrahn ปีที่แล้ว +2

      HUGE for soap making. It can also be very time sensitive as if they've used all the tallow it doestn show up in the cooking tasks menu.
      you have to ban the use of tallow AFTER the dwarves render the fat in to tallow but BEFORE its used in a meal.
      honestly pretty frustrating.

    Wait, you get better yields from harvesting too? I thought crop size was only determined during the planting.

    • @jsoleary87
      @jsoleary87 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      While planting does determine crop size, planting skill is also increased by the harvesting task (they're both the Farming (Fields) labor). So ideally, planters should also harvest if you're looking to skill up/increase yields.

    • @dzello
      @dzello ปีที่แล้ว +4

      He's saying if your farmer harvests, his skill improves. And if his skill improves, he gets better yields from plating in the future.

    id love a tutorial on the work orders screen, specifically on how the screen with the conditions and inequality stuff works.
    I don't understand how it works if you have multiple conditions, like if you have make pig iron if you have more than 10 coal and more than 10 iron. Does it only go if both are fulfilled, or is it like an or statement where only one has to be fulfilled to be active?

      I feel you. You wish do micromanage the dwarven jobs. Unfortunately as i find out you gimp yourself if you do that more then anything else. So the way that the system works is that your dwarf have a list of tasks to do he will prioritize the tasks that he is most good at automatically( the system decides who to send do a job based on who is the best available person to do the job) . if you make lets say a carpenter labor and assign a dwarf to that labor you essentially just give this responsibility to that dwarf and only that dwarf on top of his other tasks. ( i wish we would have a prioritization level on top of the current system.

    You can set a task to Everybody Does This after limiting a dwarf's tasks, even though it initially limits it. The checkmark become grayed out but I assume it makes those individual dwarves limit their tasks, but enables all dwarves to do the task in question

  • @wielkiedrzewo

    Great vid. One question though: Is it REALLY beneficial (besides jobs related to metal) to create new jobs for certain dwarves besides a good'ol "IWANTTO" reason? Or "should" i just let them run around doing whatever and let game systems take care of everything? Not asking for a definitive answare - do always/never, just something that you know from your experiance.
    I feel like after giving specialisations to my dwarves everything went to shi...i mean slowed down drastically. The obvious thing that cross my mind is that i fcuked up something - which is a thought that i've decided to promptly ignore.

    • @SSR2902
      @SSR2902 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea the also find you that assigning workers to jobs will not make the prioritize the job more then they already do (at least i dont think so) all that it dose is to give a particular dwarf more responsibility to do. Good is you want to make dwarfs be legendary at something but asside from metals things dont increase in value by much

    • @shukterhousejive
      @shukterhousejive ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Skilled dwarves work faster and create higher value items if possible, if you're trying to make the best possible military gear or get the most value out of your gem-encrusted furniture then you absolutely want custom details. Alternatively you can make a dedicated workshop for high-level tasks, assign one dwarf to it, then queue work orders from said workshop to keep your important jobs separate from the rest. And you have guildhalls to get lower skilled dwarves trained up as an alternative to burning through materials making junk.

    • @Nassifeh
      @Nassifeh ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes getting it done Now is important, which is why like I don't see any reason to select people to do hauling. But I don't want an unskilled rando to do the planting just because my good planter is momentarily distracted? But I won't select JUST the amazing planter, I will also pick a backup person to start learning it. Otherwise, I've found, you end up with every dwarf having a bunch of dabbling/novice level skills and nobody's noticeably faster. But you can't just wait on the best possible person to do every possible job all the time or nothing gets done and you've got nobody ready when that one dwarf can't handle the workload. I think it mostly only works if there are relatively few freely-available tasks, though? So it takes some setup, and at first things take slightly longer to get done. At first, everybody has to wear a few different hats, but over time I peel off high-demand things to be their own worker pool. It's worked pretty okay, though I've been experimenting so I haven't gotten anything past about 100 dwarves going at a time yet.

      @@Nassifeh I am always impressed by my carpenter working faster with 1 carpenters shop then 6 other rando dwarfs.

  • @Zetamaxorg
    @Zetamaxorg ปีที่แล้ว

    4:10 is a little confusing. So if you select one dwarf to only do a specific labor, it assumes you will want to specify every individual dwarf that does that labor from there on out? Otherwise only one person will end up doing it?

    • @tmsplltrs
      @tmsplltrs ปีที่แล้ว

      You tell the dwarf to only do the tasks that you specified, but inversely those tasks will only be done by the dwarves that you specified. It simply blocks the 'all dwarves do this task' option.

    • @Nassifeh
      @Nassifeh ปีที่แล้ว

      You can really basically just select the top few, since they're the ones who'd generally be picked by the system in any case, I think? Or if it's a workshop task you can just assign them their own workshop for it. It'd be nice if there was an equivalent assignment option for things that don't have workshops. I mostly find I want to assign lists specifically anyway, because usually I'd rather concentrate the skill usage on a few people even if it slightly slows tasks down.

    I (almost)always turn off refuse hauling for children. They'll quite often start playing in the stockpile/dump right after moving a dead body or something. @@eugenec1733 You could set up your garbage dump to be a 1x2 with one square being over a 2-3 deep hole and have the trash compactor on the bottom. The dwarves will stand in one square and dump the items in the square with the hole.
      You can also automate refuse dumping with a minecart. Simply set up a track stop in the direction of the hole, set up a minecart route on that stop, set up what goes into the minecart; all corpses (minus dwarves and other corpses you don't want dropped) and all refuse minus fresh hides(under item types), bones, shells, skulls, wool/hair, and refuse dwarf corpses. Basically anything that you have no use for and want to automatically dump. After that go into the stop conditions and remove all entries there. This will make your dwarves automatically kick the cart and the result will be all your stuff falling into your pit. Also, I'm not sure, but you may need to control the kick direction with some walls so they only kick from one direction. At the bottom of the pit have your bridge triggered by either a lever or pressure plate. You'll also need to make sure dwarves can't get access to the bottom of the pit where everything gets dumped. Since it's not falling into it's own stockpile they will want to go down and move it back. Simply put it behind a forbidden door to prevent this.
      Combine the 1x2 garbage dump with this and you'll never have to micromanage refuse and trash again.

    • @Mehow80
      @Mehow80 ปีที่แล้ว

      You create a dedicated binman. Dwarf who only hauls refuse as the fortress' garbage man/woman
