Very helpful, I didn't know what a lot of these options actually did. I tend to prefer smaller low-population forts but was worried I was missing out on the fun events, so I will definitely try tweaking the population triggers. I'd love to see a similar deep dive into the custom world generation menu, maybe with some tips on how to achieve certain results like steeper cliffs, more of certain biomes etc.
Fantastic video! I've got a ~200 hours into DF now, but I've never really touched the settings as I didn't really know how extensive/impactful they could be. This reference definitely makes it easier for me to do so, thanks!
Great topic! I knew some of these, but didn't realize how extensive some of the settings were - interesting that you can create an authentic Player vs Environment option in savage biomes
Thank you for this! I plan on streaming a new fort soon and these settings and ideas will help me keep a narrative understanding of what's happening in my fort.
This is a good video because it clears up a bunch of questions I had about the options. Side question: would it be possible for you to make your gameplay tutorials into one big video with chapters? I use those videos to refresh myself when I dive back into the fortress. It would be lovely if I could scrub through all of them at once. If not, no big deal. I’ll just run up the view count for you.
Great stuff, I've mostly tried to avoid messing around w/ settings (aside from pop cap) but after some serious cavern dweller shenanigans that more than anything else just annoyed me (and swelled my bronze/iron/steel reserves a lot) I'm ready to tweak at least that option!
@@BlindiRLok that’s funny, google gave me the option to translate ‘madlad’ into English. For those interested, it told me it means ‘expose’. I’m now curious what language it thought you were speaking, since I only speak English.
I started playing df like 3 years before the steam version, and while starting out i always thought the game ran way too fast, so if you're a beginner i would keep the game speed at 30-40. There is so much to learn and figure out and then you will have time to explore everything and still be able to keep up with things that are happening. I still play at 30 because i still think the dwarfes moves too fast otherwise. And the game feels "the same" from start to max cap of pop. Ofcourse this is a personal preference, just my thoughts.
That was good, thanks! From time to time I like to play in ASCII but the layout gets bug out a lot. Is there a way to set the settings so it doesn't get all messed up there?
It's cool that the difficulty is so granularly customizable, but is the game really that precise with invasion events, or is there some randomness? Having a guaranteed invasion upon reaching exactly X wealth of exactly Y size, etc. seems very gamey. I would like to have an option for a more vague threat expectation, maybe closer to how rimworld handles such things, so that I know things will get generally harder over time, but not precisely what I'm going to be up against.
Invasions depend on local populations and if you are at war with someone. No one around? No war. Tons of people around you are at peace with? Piss them off in trades and war. Kill a visiting noble? War. Its specific once you are at war with someone but its never 100% predictable.
As someone who’s planning on picking up this game I appreciate this video,I never really played colony based games before so this will be my first one and as silly as it sounds the settings kinda intimidated me. Would love to see more tutorials regarding drawf fortress if you have made them already
Hey, kind of a dumb question but, did they remove the difficulty setting from the settings menu you access from the main menu? Cause I can't find it in my tabs
In all my time learning this game, I have yet to mess with the in-game options like this ^-^" Thank you for this video! I'm going to reformat some notification settings now lol Edit: Can't wait for the DF Hack video as well! :D
Blind...I love this game, and so far I've sunk almost 400 hours into it. But one thing I'm having trouble with is aquifers (and by extension water power and pumps)...I JUST don't understand how to deal with them. I've watched every TH-cam video I can find but people talk about them so technically or so rapidly it just goes all over my head. Any chance you can do an episode where you do an "Aquifers for Dummies"???
Had to tweak the number of cavern invaders on my game cause pc is a potato. Wish I had a better control of how long the break is between invasions, sometimes they feel like they can happen twice in a week, which might be because the invaders are cave swallow people and their pathing seems shitty and tend to hang around their spawn with only 2 or 3 folk making their way to our doors so several raids get stuck around and stack up or clearing one raid happens at the same time a new one shows up.
I have seen LOTS of trolls they tend to live in the first cavern layer on good biomes! You probably dont see them much because you never play on good nature biomes just untamed wilds I would guess XD but yeah they COULD be bugged to be only in that biomes but I do see them very frequently on my good biome fort but none of my others
I didn't realize multithreading was off by default. My number one fortress killer is fps which isn't very *fun* so maybe with that things will be better...
@@BlindiRLheck yeah! Also love your content, your guides have saved me many a troubles and taught me things i thought i already fully comprehended! Keep up the good work brotheman

It could literally be dwarf vs wild.

Would'nt that be reusing content? Maybe I'd have to think on it.
Thank you
The keyboard cursor is useful for many dfhack commands. It appears in dig mode when enabled. You can move it with the arrow keys.

bruh i had to double check if my video is playing on 2x speed lol, relax please!! thank u for the helpful info though
Haha. Blind is normally pretty low key but no joke he’s on full speed ahead at the beginning here LOL.
As someone who normally watched videos at 2x speed, including this one, I didn’t notice the difference.
Madlad

Blind has to keep up after putnam doubled fps

Wait, you can slow the dwarves? I guess I really need to watch this video. lol. Just perusing the comments at the moment.
That was good, thanks!

here I am
After watching your brilliant let's play series I bought the game and start off with a settings tutorial.
Not wanting to miss anything 😀

This is a really nice rundown. A little bit disappointed that you didn't talk about your world settings. Maybe for the next video?
Seconded. I, too, would like to hear about what world settings he chooses, and why.
I leave them all default aside from mineral scarcity

I'm not sure how to reexplain them more then I already have..

play this vid at 75%
you can track this cursor quicker and understand what tap needs to be selected

No, not wild trolls. Trolls with weapons as part of goblin armies. Kind of two different things.
I didn't realize multithreading was off by default. My number one fortress killer is fps which isn't very *fun* so maybe with that things will be better...
So Difficulty does not show up on my settings screen why is yours different than mine?
Load the game, its tied to save games. Not the game itself.
Most important settings to world gen is setting minerals to sparse.
Btw does DFhack support steam cloud setting sync?
Nope, but you can just copy paste the settings files.
Could you do another video on water pumps, i tried to copy your exact video and i cannot get the water to pump from Z level to Z level
It'd have to be a complete guide covering lava and water. I'll see what I can do.

Can you share your announcements.txt file?
When you talk about end-game frame rate, it would sort of help to know your CPU. Not really necessary... but it would be nice for context.
