Over-wintered queen busting out of NUC - Adventures in Beekeeping

  • I made this nuc from the over wintered queen from another hive. She has laid these frames full and the bees are storing honey in burr comb above the frames. Time to give these ladies an upgrade.

    Do you have good luck getting the bees to come up through the queen excluder with just foundation?

      I am forced to use just foundation for honey supers this year because the wax moths destroyed my drawn comb in my stored supers. In the past, I have not used queen excluders that much. So I am adding supers different ways to see what happens. So far this is what I think I am seeing.... Double brood box or more with a queen excluder - the bees are not working the foundation in the super yet. (They are backing filling the deeps with honey.) Double brood box without a queen excluder - I do not know yet what is happening. Single brood box with a queen excluder - the bees are drawing comb on the foundation. I am not expecting much of a honey crop this year because the bees are having to draw the comb. We shall see. Thanks for watching. Hope you have a great beekeeping year.
