    Hi! Is this an F Astra?

    I did the same tests on my cylinders. I could see some small vertical scratches (about 10mm long). On some of them, I could feel it with my nail. However, piston rings were perfecly hermetic and the engine wasn't burnuing oil at all. I Heard that as soon as you feel the scratch with your nail, it Is Bad, but some say the engine works perfecly anyway.

      Great point! So, If you feel scratches on your hand, there has been a cut in the engine. These cylinders are loose and the power is poor.
      Then I recommend a replacement engine. Throw the scratched old engine in the junkyard or sink e.g it in the Atlantic.

      @@PeterFinnTheCarDoctor Yes the power was poor, definitely. I am currently replacing the engine due to a piston ring failure (probably the lower one). I just wanted to know if the original engine could be rebuilt on a budget.

      @@bibana06 yes it can be rebuilt, they "open" the sesurements a little bit.

    Good job, Peter, so this one you don't have to replace piston rings. usually, replacing rings how long will be last? the performance is the same as new engine? do you have experiences?

  • @Brucelee-dw7tw

    Peter. How is the reliability about changing the piston rings determined by hand pushing it movement?
    My engine has been headed off, checked by your method, and it does not move almost. and I put in 10ml of fuel on the top of pistons , which was not disappear in half an hour, so the piston rings should be good, and there was no scratch on the CYLINDER walls. But in my leak down test, a lot of air coming out from OIL CAP. How to explain this? Do you have a better way to determine not to replace the piston ring? because replacing piston ring is big job, so before disassemble we need to confirm it , this is the professional way, thank you.

    No carbon on piston sides means using oil, a lot due, cylinder wear, rings worn or broken or a collapsed piston caused by overheating. See cylinder no 2

    Hello. This vid Is pretty old but I would like to know what's wrong with muy Astra (G 2001). Scanner says that Pistons 2 & 3 have a failure. Each cylinder has a compression of 50 PSI each and that's too low. What could it be?

    • @PeterFinnTheCarDoctor
      @PeterFinnTheCarDoctor  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Piston rings or valves have leaks

      Peter Finn But I've changed all 16 valves last year since my distribution band broke up. Or Is there any other reason for them to fail even if they are repaired? I can barely go uphills. Sometimes the car gains a little bit of power But it's only from 2000 RPM and higher...

      @@guillermoc.t.6232 Bro just clean the maf sensor and throttle intake body! Also check your air filter and replace your fuel filter. Start from the simple things and then decide!
      I have fixed 2 bottom coolant hoses last month on my 1.8 Astra G. It was a hassle, we had to remove the whole generation of the car to have access. A few days ago I noticed the big coolant hose in the front of the engine is hard asf. I didn't lose coolant tho, so a friend mechanic of mine said basically to keep an eye of the oil and the coolant. It burns 400grams of oil in 3,000kms so it's still not too bad, but soon I have to get rid of it. I don't know how you decided to put 16 new valves, that's so expensive for this crappy vehicle. I mean it has almost no value and it's not a reliable vehicle after 300,000 kms. I am currently at 290,000kms and I've already decided to drive that thing like I stole it🙆‍♂️😂😂😂. Then junk it and get a Rav 4 or a Honda CRV or Civic if I decide to get a smaller car.
