Jeremy Corbyn's independent election campaign to stop Starmer winning London stronghold

  • Can Corbyn keep his seat? We visited Islington North to meet the man who has spent 40 years representing this part of London. Is his loyal following enough to beat Labour on July 4th, or has Keir Starmer purged him from parliament in a way Tony Blair never did?

      I don't think parties are the way forward, they used to be a good idea when we were less connected but now we have the internet, social media and decentralised news, independent candidates can collaborate just as easily without forming something that can become what it seeks to defeat.
      Without party politics, it would be possible to work with people like Galloway on foreign policy where he's excellent but ignore him on domestic issues where he is a bigot.
      The ANC ended apartheid but Andrew feinstein ended up leaving because they became corrupt.

    • @celt456
      @celt456 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I, too, am no fan of this right-wing Labour administration - I am no longer a member of the party, accordingly.
      It isn't always easy to see the direct influence of different views expressed in parliamentary debates, or the way in which they shift public opinion and voting behavior, But, it is always a powerful statement when a politician speaks against their own party and it brings the issue into public awareness. Also, alliances with others in the party on the left can be effective (the small number of far-right Tories, for example, have had a huge influence on their direction, to the point of the most ugly of policies being enacted).
      Importantly, Jeremy's constituents speak highly of the way he works tirelessly to represent them and it would have been easier to be elected to continue to serve them as a Labour candidate.
      I don't hold a view about whether Jeremy should, or shouldn't, have stood as an Independent earlier. I expect he would have thought through the 'pro's and cons' and I respect his right to arrive at a decision that he felt best at the time. What is of interest to me is now. Now, he stands as an Independent and I wish his campaign all the very best.

      @@lemsip207 remember all the energy they put into those two elections to keep Corbyn out of number 10. Why would they do all that just to hand the keys to starmer a few years later unless starmer is controlled opposition IE a Tory plant.

    If Jeremy doesn't win it will show how fickle the people of Islington are. How on earth anyone can even consider voting Labour / Starmer and therefore condone genocide is beyond me.

    The problem is the majority of Mr Corbyns supporters who would love to have him as their MP, don’t live in Islington North, and the recent telephone poll, albeit only 500 people, has put him second place to the Labour candidate.

    Excuse me for being an eejit, i’m not even a new labour councillor, but i saw it coming and i told them so and why (Brexit, bollocks it ended up as vote on whether or not we live within a democracy) on the doorstep. But they were too busy delivering junk mail…

      If I'm reading your comment right I told them the same. I said basically many people send their children to fight wars in the belief we are spreading democracy. I said the 2nd ref idea flies in the face of this and people feel as though we aren't a democratic country with that policy. I also said it was a deliberate attempt by Keir (who came up with the 2nd ref policy) to throw the 2019 general election and ensure jeremey never becomes PM. I was told I was stupid etc. All turned out to be true and I called it at the time not in hindsight.
