    The Aiel culture was perhaps the most fleshed out culture in the books, giving us multiple points of view and plenty of history. It was also beautifully written. Everyone who read to the glass pillars was forced to finish the flashbacks before putting the book down.

      Not only the flashbacks, but the potential flashforwards.

      I couldn't finish that reading without putting the book down. I had to put the book down several times for chills before picking them up again. I hate flashbacks in written and visual mediums. Those few pages, however, were some of the most beautiful things I've ever experienced.

    I honestly love the Aiel and think their future was saved by the Dragon Peace. i honestly wish there was an extra chapter in a MoL that tied everything in a nice bow and showed life a hundred years later.

      I CONCUR! I wish Brandon Sanderson would do this, but I know he is very respectful of Jordan’s notes. He doesn’t like making “apocryphal” material, but if you didn’t know there is a chapter available called River of Souls, it’s like a deleted scene but it’s considered official WOR canon. It’s from Demandred’s pov while he was in Shaara. Very interesting. You can find it on Amazon but part of a larger book of different excepts from famous fantasy authors.

    I think a point often left out of discussions of the Aiel culture is their very strong cultural memory. Each leader - Wise One and Clan chief - has gone through the Glass Pillars and experienced the Sharing of the Water, which is why they feel obligated to the Cairhienen. As such, destroying Avendoraldera was a personal affront, not just one long remembered by tradition. In this frame of mind, Cairhien should have risen up against Laman, instead of protecting him; thus, all are guilty or at least mistrusted.
    Long cultural memories are difficult to maintain accurately, and few cultures, in fact or fiction, have done so successfully. I think the Aiel's uniqueness is in the way the memory is maintained, perfectly in Rhuidean but so mangled in the traditional traditions.

      I think the Aiel are the only people we actually know the history of, glimpses at least. I'd love to try to find any kind of clues to trace the refugees of say, Paaran Diisen to where they eventually may have settled. Or if any of the cities of the Age of Legends might have had shorter people. Who's the shortest Forsaken, and where were they from? Possible ancestors of the Water Sharers and Cairhienen? lol

    I love the Aiel. Yes, they are brutal. They’re as brutal as the Waste that shaped them. Their honor code, while extreme, places almost every one on the same level... and can be self correcting. Their focus on almost all things Martial ensures that each person has a place in society. The rules and laws they have are enforced by the individuals they are meant to guide. Ji’e’Toh is personal... yet held by the collective. Every Aiel aspires to being, well, Aiel. The entire goal of their society lines up slightly better with the Spartans. An honorable death against impossible odds. Come to think of it... Aiel’s would make perfect Saiyans. Anyways, the Aiel humor is for all intents Gallow-humor. It’s the humor of warriors who have embraced their death long before the injury responsible happened.
    That’s why Borderlanders and Aiel respect each other. Each is a militant society... The Whitecloaks are a different animal, altogether. However, it is the respect of warriors who may end up on different sides of a conflict. It shouldn’t be a mystery why all of the Great Captains came from the We(s)t lands and the greatest armies came from the Wastes. And, I guess, the best merchants/politicians would come from Shara... not something that’s supported much/at all in the canon. But, the boldness of their lying.... My point is the Aiel are absolutely the best warriors, pound-for-pound, in the Wheel of Time. But, that’s the thing, that’s really all they are.
    If the Aiel had access to the Seanchan empires weapons of war, or the education system needed to produce multiple Captains of great ability, or the political capital of Andor, or even steady access to raw materials of even the smallest nations... well, it would’ve been obvious from book one Rand was Aiel... because it would *only* be Aiel in the story.
    The Wastes in effect limited the Aiel. If it weren’t for the fact that the Aiel were bound to the Wastes, it could’ve ended before it began for everyone. The lack of resources, the constant fight to survive, the vast cultural adhesion to Vows, the honor code, and the constant skirmishes amongst themselves led to an Aiel society that couldn’t be bothered by anything else, except that one time.
    Yes, they had the numbers and ability to wreck the Wetlands combined. However, they never would have. Remember, the entire society is the splinter of one broken vow. The Aiel truly believe they, as a whole, deserve punishment. So, their harsh methods are actually a symptom of the cultural desire to be punished. And, most of them don’t even know why they should be punished. Their society has only taught them they should be punished. They remove obligations in exchange for punishments. I.E, you gain honor for withstanding punishment. That pretty much sums up everything about the Aiel.
    A society that wants to remove some great sin of the past and accepts the punishment given. Even, and, especially if that punishment binds them in some way.
    Also... it’s possible the Aiel are the most badass warriors of all time. There’s a reason the Aiel of old made a vow that would bind their entire people’s for what could’ve been all time. To serve and never pick up a weapon. Could it be because if/when the Aiel pick up a weapon, they find a natural proficiency? And, while that last part is entirely possible, this may go astray.
    I don’t remember anyone ever choosing to be Aiel. Like, ever. Aiel were Aiel and everyone is everyone else. Everyone but the Ogier(alien..cough, cough) and the constructs. Each construct has some type of ability. Did they Aiel have an ability? Yes, it’s shown that they had a Song. It’s a plot thread that didn’t get wrapped up, though. The Tinkers, Ogier, and Greenman all mention this Song. The Tinkers dedicate their traveling nature to the search for this Song. And the Aiel seem to be the only ones that had this ability manifest in almost all Aiel. Fan theory, the Aiel are constructs, like trollocs and all things Dark one, the Aiel are a construct that operates in the Light, instead of the Dark.
    In that light, it makes sense. The Aiel are Compelled to hold their obey. Their society is structured the way it is so as to be of service to the man that will fight the Dark One. Their ‘savior’ is going to shatter their old bonds (read: vows), and bind them in new ones. What society exists and active seeks to be beholden to someone or something else? The answer: a society Compelled to obey. Or... constructed that way. We know of no Compelling, nor item of Power, that could bind an entire people through the generations.
    The Aiel have an innate Talent, seem to have some type of genetic need for obeying, are almost innately honorable (still fallible), and have hobbled their own society despite the fact they could rule 25% of the globe by next month. All in the name of a promise made between people who are so long dead, history doesn’t even mention the Aiel until well after the promise was made. Then, you have the modern Aiel, who were entirely shaped by that promise being broken... In a sense, to be Aiel is to be bond by that promise.
    Edit: some typos I’m not going to fix.

    • @michaelhowze8198
      @michaelhowze8198 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I'd say not a construct per se rather an altered race of humans. Basically genetic engineering with the One Power.

      At least one that we do know about who chose to be Aiel was Rands mother, who became a Maiden of the Spear by choice.

    • @jamesbrownii9508
      @jamesbrownii9508 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@garlandking1382 Great point! It’s one that I completely overlooked. Yet, after thinking about it for some time, I’d say that the very nature of the Aiel is ‘Honor the oaths’. Rands mother did indeed join the Aiel, and took an oath as a Maiden of the Spear. She broke that oath, and in doing so gave birth to Rand. It was as it must be, because a true Aiel wouldn’t have broken that oath. In fact the Aiel have largely remained faithful to the oaths they have been given to honor. The prophecies demanded the Dragon have the blood of the Aiel. The twisted frame doorways and portals in the heart of the Aiel city have guided them for generations. That guidance is what has led to the modern Aiel, still in complete adherence to the ‘true’ Aes Sedai. Only a non-Aiel woman could have given birth to the dragon.
      Though, you still make a great addition to my point. To be Aiel is to be bound by Oaths.

    • @ChristmasLore
      @ChristmasLore 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rand's mother does choose to become Aiel (a maiden of the spear)...
      So does Aram, in some ways, by taking up a sword. Like the Aiel first ancestors, thus breaking free from the Way of the Leaf.
      ("True" Aiel do break oaths...- Aviendha...hum hum-, and Maiden leaving for becoming pregnant, not an isolated incident. There are many passages about this, expressions and jokes.)

    love the Aiel! - and the way the culture is presented by Jordan initially - slowly very mysterious and dangerous a little at a time. Even when we learn everything about them in later books their uncertain future in a peaceful world keeps them just as interesting. Having a lot of the culture presented through Rand and Avienda's early relationship is one my favorite aspects, and to a lesser extent Gaul's complaining the Perrin about his lady troubles with Bain and Chiad. I also like that despite being so powerful militarily they are also fragile and under threat as a people from multiple dangers from prophesized destruction, to the culture being undone from peace to destruction by the Seanchan, and even having darkfriends so they are never overpowered or 1 dimensional.

    Its hard not to love the Aiel, they live by such a strong sense of right vrs wrong (even if that sense is somewhat perverted or different from my own). What really struck me about them tho was the sadness in how they were forged, you can understand why so few can have that revealed and be able to accept it. It shows what time does to a peoples values and morals, how they can justify the most evil of acts as "Right" or "Honorable" because as good old Obi-wan said, so much of the truths we cling too, are defined from our POV. The Maidens relationship to Rand, and what he means to them is also something I find touching. How many of these women have had the wise ones take a child from them for another to raise, what that must do to them. And as a last point, If there ever was a interesting game to play "Maidens Kiss" is it :)

The Aiel are part of some of the best writing in the series: Rand's travels through the Waste through the battle with Rahvin; Dumi's Wells and the rescue of Faile. "how they calculate the 5th"
    Likely through a balance of Ji'e'Toh and their own pride.
    Their personal/cultural bias would come into play, but the pride would weigh on both sides. No Aiel would want to exceed the 5th and accept Toh. No defeated Aiel would fail to meet the Toh of providing the full measure of the 5th. Honour would compel both sides to be honest in their assessments. It wouldn't be important to be precise, only to be honest. If they short themselves, they're undermining the Ji of others by not allowing them to meet Toh. If they take too much, then they are perhaps giving the defeated greater Ji (by assuming their greater wealth) but they're ALSO perhaps accepting Toh with the brag (that your defeated foe is greater than they are) or by plain theft.
    I always loved that Ji'e'Toh was SO incredibly personal and complicated.

    I've always interpreted the Aiel's guarding of the ter'angreal as something Solinda Sedai didn't care about at all, she just used it as an excuse to get the Aiel to leave Paaren Disen.
    "The citizens have already fled Paaren Disen, Jonai. Besides, the Da'shain yet have a part to play, if Deindre could only see far enough to say what. In any case, I mean to save something here, and that something is you."
    "As you say," he said reluctantly. "We will care for what you have given into our charge until you want them again."
    "Of course. The things we gave you." She smiled at him and loosened her grip, smoothing his hair once more before folding her hands. "You will carry the . . . things . . . to saftey, Jonai. Keep moving, always moving, until you find a place of saftey, where no one can harm you."
    That to me really reads as she hadn't even remembered the . . . things . . . existed until he brought them up, and she just used them to get him to leave. I find it quite sad and kind of funny that the artifacts so many of the people in the previous memories had died for were based on an Aes Sedai manipulation.

      @@edwardsimpson119 we don't know for sure, though, and that's the part that I wish we knew. There's a prophecy in the series sometime that says the world won't be done with war after the Last Battle. The Aiel were my favorite addition to the story. They are interesting, frustrating, and very very cool. The lore dump and their really ancient connections make them some of the oldest feeling people (culturally) besides the Aes Sedai. And I guess they are fundamentally linked. Both are servants of the past and leaders of the future. ‘hands of the meek’ and all that I guess.

    A question I have about societies, do they get to choose which society they belong to? Or do the societies watch the young warriors grow and choose them based on what they are strongest at (like good night vision, or amazing hand to hand skills)? Or even a step more, is it like the Ajahs, and they can subtlety get the warriors they want to lean toward which group?

    I'd love to see an addendum to include the two pseudo-societies, the Meradin/Brotherless, and the Siswai'aman/Spears of the Dragon!
    There's so much more to discuss about the Aiel, their history is so rich and full of small events that shape the future of the story. Then seeing how they develop as the events post book 4, it's so interesting and I wish there was more said in the books about it.
    When Rhuarc dedicated his spear to the dragon and donned the headband I had hoped we might finally get a glimpse at the new ...not a society, but almost like a cult? The only thing they do say is that the wording of Siswai'aman (sorry if I'm spelling it wrong right now) is something like it was in the possessive case.
    We actually see more of the Brotherless, and how they're now treated as something of an untouchable or clan/societyless people. Even the various Aiel societies following Rand accepted Shaido who didn't choose to accept Couladin. But the Aiel who left their clans because they didn't accept Rand were nearly shunned completely.
    And so so much more.

    I'm so glad you brought up the morality point in the end, I like the Aiel as a culture it's quite interesting, but always find the fandom very dismissive of their less savory aspects, like they are very xenophobic! they kill wetlanders or send them to Shara to become slaves, it's quite messed up! See the thing I always loved about the series is how every culture is set in their ways and have flaws as well as virtues, but the fandom can be picky with what they focus on, like the Sea Folk get some hate from the fandom for being business minded, but morality wise I feel they are better than Aiel. Also, I don't even want to imagine what they would have been like if their prophecy said something like kill Rand on sight...that would have been the easiest way for the dark one to win!
    From previous experience expressing such sentiment can get me in trouble! So I have to clarify, I like the Aiel, doesn't mean I have to condone their actions, I even like the Seanchan because they are so unique and interesting, I feel that should be OK!

    The Aiel in the books are a good example of a survival-oriented culture that focuses on honor & shame. There are plenty of examples in history of human cultures like this, though they would be unfamiliar to many modern Westerners. They have many downsides, which I think the book series underplayed.
    What triggers me though about how the Aiel are portrayed in the books is their *huge numbers* . They live in a *desert* . What little farming they do is done in tiny areas (e.g. a few goats at the tiny water hole at Imre Stand). The constant struggle for food and water, as well as their endless warring among themselves, should have resulted in a relatively small total population. Their total numbers ought to be tiny compared to the nations in the fertile Westlands. Somehow they seem to have a magic source of endless food which has allowed their population to grow vastly beyond what that type of land ought to be able to sustain. (The books' depiction of the Tinkers' way of life suffers from a similar level of implausibility with regard to food sources)

    I think the aiel culture is what is doomed, not the people itself. Like, Aviendha's vision is more an extension of what Rand exposes them to, under the dragon's peace they will have to evolve as they mingle with other races or they will just stand more and more alone. I also think the memory rings are both a blessing and a curse for them this way; they can find out about their past, but it's also locked them more firmly into the cycle of the warped purpose passed down through them, through imperfect understanding. Overall, it's hard not to like them in my opinion, but yes they are hardly perfect. :)

    Okay I know it was just a comment thrown out there but I gotta defend the Aiel and redirect a vibe, you said "They'll kill you just for looking at em funny" but nahhh their honor and obligation isn't quite like that, now the Seanchan on the other hand with all their lowering and raising of the eyes would for sure do that! The Aiel would just beat a funny looker senseless and humble them through gruelling torments such as running around the encampment a billion times or moving a pile of sand from one place to another grain by grain only to have to move it back grain by grain again however many times it takes to stop looking at people funny and a few extra times just for good measure! A much lighter sentence in comparison to the Seanchan who would probably either flay you alive or chop ya into bits but keeping you alive long enough to endure the torment of having your body cut into pieces segment by tiny segment in a public square for simply raising your eyes to a lord or ladies face...good people

      I wish we learned more about them. They almost seemed like a cult to me, more dedicated than the dedicated. The name siswai'aman implied ownership, (compare to Far Darei Mai, Maidens of the Spear) and was so disturbing to the other Aiel they refused to speak of it. When Rhuard had headband on my soul was both crushed (and I didn't even know WHY) and elated because I had hope we might learn more. Alas.
