- Do you want the look of a professional install of your radar detector by clearing your dash and cigarette lighter? Radar Roy demonstrates the ease of direct wiring your Escort 9500ix or Bel GX65 radar detector to your fuse box in just less than ten minutes. For more info visit www.RadarBuster...
This exact video is what I based my 8500x50 installation on, just how Roy does it. Works great!!!!!
Sir, thanks so much for your time, effort and the great info you provided.
Thanks Larry McBean in sharing that they are helpful to you...
Yes, infact what is nice about the new Escort Max if it senses it is getting hot, it shuts down to avoid damage
Thanks for the DIY,i was able to hardwire my cobra radar detector in my 05 Acura TL. Installation was a breeze.
BadassVTEC cobra??I dont trust cobras .had 2 and both sucked.got tickets in two states.finally I paid them as I was about to get arrested.i then baught an escourt passport.its saved me more on tickets than the cost of all 3 . Shopped around after watching you tube and found one for 150
I still can't believe my 03 tacoma has THREE cigarette lighters... Nonethe less I'd still like to get a radar detector mounted on the far left side of the windshield & get the wires off my stick shift.
Amazing how good radar detectors are. I got a crappy $45 cobra. Still gets signals from 1/2mi - 2mi away. Even over hills. Saved my ass 15x in one drive. Best thing I ever bought. + It's like a game. Just fun to "know" where the cops are. :-P
All the add a circuit kits only recommend using on a 10a fuse or less, but the one i want to use (12v cigarette Lighter fuse) is 15a fuse
Timmy Short - Well I would follow the recommendations for the add a circuit kit that you have along with instructions in your cars manual. How about the fuse to the radio or another accessory?
I check everything and I find out that something is wrong with the cable. So I replace it for other and it's working just fine
Thanks a lot for you help 👍🏽
Sounds ok as long as you kept the inline fuse
I would recommend getting a voltage meter to check
So are you able to close the fuse box panel back up even though you have the wire coming out from it? I'm assuming so
I have a 995 and installed it in a Honda Ridgeline 2012. I used the Add-A-Line and connected it by removing the radio fuse... It has some problem. When I remove the key, the radar stays on. The key controlled the radio after the fuse... Even though the key is out there is still 12V in the fuse. I end up using the power window slot... and also since I'm at it I end up hardwiring my back-up camera also. All is well now and thanks for the ideas...
Ped Roh - See if you can get a volt meter to check the accessory fuse panel and find one that shuts off when you power off the car
Yes, i did and those are the one protecting the power windows... i used the rear power window... everything works fine...ty
Very helpful! Thanks!!
You're welcome...
In many vehicles there is a rubber plug of some sort. If so use it. If not get out the drill
great DIY
i have two questions
first i have a beltronics vector 995 radar detector i was wondering if that was a good detector i paid $100 for it off craigslist
also i have the mute button on the bottom of my wire do they make a hardwire with that button built onto it i really like that
Get the manual for your car and it will have what fuse is what. Yes, will still work if that is all it draws
Got to love it!
Now can you do this with regular a cigar lighter powered detector? Just by cutting off the cigar plug and using the positive/ground leads to get power?
I want to have a switch so I can turn the radar detector off/on easily and discreetly. Could you make a video showing that or a adding a switch to something similar?
Will add it to the list, right now doing all new videos for the detectors, thanks kkeewiinn2 for your suggestion
Muchas gracias por la orientacion!!
Puedo preguntar por algun lugar especializado en reparar un radar cobra road scouth, 2 en 1, detector y dash camera!?!
Cobra.com
I don't understand.... there are so many direct wire kits, but almost all of them plug into fuses or the cigarette adapter circuit. From what I can tell all of those sources are 12v sources. When I look at my detector it says 4.5v output on the cigarette plug. How are these wires + fuses downscaling the voltage? Or can your detector run at 12v also? All I can imagine is 1000's of people frying their detectors (instantly or slowly over time) by wiring them in with add-circuits.
thanks for the guide. what do you do when you have the fuse box under the hood, how do you get the wire out of the cabin and under the hood? thanks
Radar detectors are legal in NJ
Mine doesn’t seem to be turning on and off with my radio. Anyone else have that problem? I did everything instructed on this video.
Very informative site. I have a question. I working on a 2014 ford edge. The searched all my fuses with a volt meter for accessory power. Kind of crazy, all the fuses meter out as power to them all the time even with the ignition powered off. Any suggesting for this crazy ford. Should had been a no brainer. Suspect all from the fuses are fed to relays controlled by ignition after the fuse box
+Rocko Easy Any fix on this? I plan hardwiring in my 2011 ford edge
Roy, thanks for the video, very helpful. One question: in the video you mentioned using a 1 or 2 amp fuse for the 9500ix; problem is that it is quite difficult to source a 1amp mini, seems that the 3amp is much more common. I asked Escort and the recommend a 1amp as well. So this may be nitpicking, but do you foresee any problems using a 3amp?
good info
What Amp fuse did u use to radar ?
Thank you
nice, thank you
Roy can i just use the cord that comes with the detector cut off the cig. plug end. run red to add a circut and black to ground. do i also need a inline fuse. and if so what size ?
Good afternoon, Roy
I've used the add a fuse before however I don't remember if it matters which way it goes into the fuse box. Is there not a load side in the box ? I have a volt meter so I can test it
HI.. can I use 5 amp on the 2nd slot going to the radar ..I got 2016 Ford Explorer & the fuse are Micro2 & Dual Micro/Micro3, I think the minimum for micr3 is only 5amp. Im going to use add-a-fuse micro & Escort iX. Thanks!
how many volts do cobra Detectors 5 or 12 V DC ?
I assume this works with any electronic device, I am thinking about hardware a GPS, it run's at 3.7v.? what about the direct wire chord? Do I need to do anything different? I dont want to blow up my new GPS
And also can you please tell me which radar detector I should get? I live in NJ
@radarroy
"as long as you keep Escort's fuse inline" I plan to use the add-a-fuse like you did in the video (i.e. 15A+3A fuses) -- is that what you mean by keeping the Escort fuse inline? Thx. I also plan to do another add a fuse off the cigarette lighter fuse for my Garmin Nuvi GPS (I have the direct wire kit for that as well), would it be fair to assume that would also use a 3A fuse? Thanks!
Awesome video Radar Roy! My fuse box for my stereo is located in my engine compartment fuse box. The passenger compartment fuse panel lowest fuse amp is 7.5 A, which is for gauge, back up lights, relay, engine control, and outside mirrors. Which electrical system should I add a circuit to in the passenger fuse panel without running the wire all the way outside the engine compartment fuse panel?
You can tap into the fuse box under your dash without any problem, just make sure that you keep the inline fuse for your detector as it's a smaller amperage
I'm trying to hard wire my Cobra to the OnStar Mirror in my '07 trailblazer. I cut the wire that powers the detector. I was expecting to see a red and black wire, but there was also a green and yellow. Do the green and yellow connect to the hot (red) or ground (black)?
No idea on the Cobra detectors Rob, you may try www.RadarDetector.net and see if anyone there knows.
Best Buy will hardwire it for me for $50. Problem solved. I showed several service people that wire today. One guy said the yellow for radios is battery- it keeps a constant on connection so presets stay in memory. This is a 3rd party hard wire kit.
Thanks Rob, will make note on the wire
Okay let me try to describe this. I have a 2013 GTI, there are two open spots with electricity but no fuses in them, instead of buying an add-a-circuit, can I just buy a 2-3 amp fuse and attack a fuse tap onto it, insert it into the open spot, and just attach the fuse tap onto the plug that's included on the escort direct wire? So that way I don't have to cut the plug and trim it.. Is that possible and is that safe?
Sure, we do this all the time. Just make sure that the accessory you're adding has a fuse
***** Okay, thanks for the quick response!
***** Quick question again, I just bought the add a fuse instead of the fuse tap. Like stated before, there is a spare switched circuit in my fuse box, when I add the add a circuit, do I need to fill both of the spaces on the add a circuit? Or can I just install a 2-3amp fuse and leave the other space on the add a circuit open?
LuWeiHuang
Just fill in the space that your detector needs
So it's a 2amp fuse?
My fuse box is in the engine compartment on my 2010 Town & Country. How do I get the wires in there from inside the cabin?
john L - You will need to either find a rubber grommet on the firewall to run the cable through or drill a small hole
nice nice THANKS
If the direct wire cord already has a fuse in it, do we just leave it in and still add another fuse into the fuse box using the add a circuit?
Yes, just add the add a circuit and the fuse
***** Thank you so much, your video is very helpful
Johnie Nguyen
Thank you, drive safe and smart....
***** one more quick question, will using a 5 amp fuse in the add a circuit be okay or do you recommend getting the 2 amp fuse?
Johnie Nguyen
does not really mater, just make sure it's larger then the fuse in the Escort direct wire cord as that is going to be the main one to protect your detector
If I buy a 20 amp add a circuit and I use a 15a radio fuse and a 3a fuse for my radar detector would that work?
Would recommend that you use your radio fuse for what ever it was rated as and then the 3 amp as long as you still keep the inline fuse to your device
Have you seen any radar detectors fail because the car got too hot inside?
@throat68 Yes, and you can even get the color lights to match your detector. It won't let me add a link so put it together...

(ww... dot before, and a dot after beltronics)
Why do you need to add a new fuse if the wire already has one built in
If you remove the inline fuse you wouldn't have to have 2, the add a circuit however needs one
Would you know how to hardwire for g37?
why would you run 2 fuses? why don't you just drop the fuse to a lower amp and run 1 fuse?
@asfan7 Should work the same way
Don't see why it wouldn't
How do i tell which one is my automotive radio? I am not wiring a radar detector, just two LED warning lights (im an EMT) amp draw is less than one amp, will this still work in the radio fuse? i need two fuses, so what other fuse do you recommend I wire into?
It only draws what it needs unless you cut the circuit when jacking it.
Great info, but my truck has two cigarette lighters
How do I hook my mute button for my radar detector that I currently have into this though
darkdancerman Escort makes a direct wire kit with that button in the circuit. He probly has a generic cord.
You would need to fish it through the firewall
Run it through the firewall
Would this approach help you with electronic surveillance? I have fifty dollars to my name and would try anything to make them stop. Thanks.
what other fuse can I used instead of the radio? thanks
Any accessory fuse should work snapback17
***** thank you. another quick question, can I Use a 3 amp fuse?
What's the difference between the 2 amp and 3 amp?
snapback17 - As long as you keep the other inline fuse sure the difference is that the fuse can handle 1 amp more voltage, your detector would normally have a much smaller amp fuse inline to protect it. As long as it is there, you'll be fine
i have the same question >
My radar comes on and right away turns off
What I did wrong???
miguel topete Check your wiring and fuse also check the ground
Is this legal in nj?
No???
Doing this with LED lights should be fine, very low amps
@coley909909909 I think a cigarette lighter is 5 amps. (Don't hold me too it though)
will this also work for the stock stereo for my 08 impala as an alternate power wire... i recently removed and reinstalled it but it would not power on so i found the fuse was blown changed still no power.. will this work
rip
seems simple
Cut take 2
hard wire
Go to my website and download my free radar detector buyer gudie - radardetector org
Sorry, no
Most people would know this but he didn't mention that the ground bolt can't be painted.
And if you take the fuse out of the radio you better have your Radio theft code or you will be humming until you get to the dealership in Monday.
Mike Johnson lol
I lost you at 2:48 ,the orig radio fuse goes to the top of the adapter, the adapter goes where the
orig fuse came from,(then add a 1or 2 amp fuse to other circuit on the added circuit) is this the fuse that would normally be in the cord plug housing that goes into the lighter, is that the white portion of the adapter ?
im thinking about doing this with LED lights, do you have any subjestions as to the fuse or should i use the radio fuse still? im also looking to put in a on and off switch on it. thanks
@throat68 Yes, and you can even get the color lights to match your detector. It won't let me add a link so put it together...
