    X, K, Ka are all names of colors of light. Like Red or Green, they just indicate a specific wavelength of energy.
    X was used quite frequently in the 80's. Today, it is used often on automatic door openers.
    K was introduced because it was able to extend further than X. It is still used quite frequently today.
    Ka was later introduced and is equally as common. The small "a" after K stands for "above", as in K-above, or just above the frequency of K.
    Ku is a new frequency used extensively in Europe. The "u" after K means "under", as un K-under or frequency just below K.
    Laser is just another frequency (color) of light. Obviously, it is more precise than X, K, and Ka because it doesn't spread as much.
    POP, I believe, is a quick burst of Ka. It's preferred by some because cops don't just drive around emitting signal all the time at the front of their vehicle.

    Commenting on an 8 year old but very informative video. I have been in the market these last 2 days for used radars to replace my old ones. All of your videos are so in-depth and thorough that I enjoy watching about all of the different radars and dashcams you test. You do an incredible amount of work and we appreciate it in helping us make the best decisions to make a purchase or even to understand how it works. Lastly I even appreciate full detector teardown as it helped me repair a used one I bought. Keep up the amazing work and I hope to support you in the future. OK Cool!

    RF spectrum (Shortwave, AM/FM, CB, Ham Radio)...
    Higher frequency = shorter wavelength = smaller antenna
    Lower frequency = longer wavelength = larger antenna
    Similar to sound waves...
    Tweeter = Higher frequency = Smaller Speaker
    Sub woofer = Lower frequency = Larger Speaker

    Great info. I remember working for a defense contractor which used radar warning receivers for military aircraft. Most of the actual details were classified, but they looked for specific radar profiles, a combination of carrier frequency as well as the pulse repetition frequency. I have no idea how civilian radar detectors work, but I imagine it would be similar.
    The other thing the military RWRs can do is have new firmware installed to keep them up to date with new threat profiles.

    In 1947 Automatic Signal Company in Connecticut built one of the first traffic radars for state police. Early radars were bulky and heavy systems, vacuum-tube technology. The radar consisted of 3 or more large components, an antenna, a 45 pound box with transmitter and processor, and an ink pen strip chart paper recorder. The radar also had a needle meter calibrated in mph. Some systems had 2 antennas, one for transmitting and the other for receiving. The antennas were mounted on a tripod, patrol vehicle hood, or fender. Some of the early 1960s' models mounted the antennas in the back windshield of the patrol car.
    The first traffic radars transmitted at 2.455 GHz in the S band (2 - 4 GHz). The antenna beamwidth varied from 15 to 20 degrees depending on model. These radars operated from a stationary position only and measured receding as well as approaching traffic to an accuracy of about ± 2 mph. The maximum detection range was an unimpressive 150 to 500 feet, vacuum-tube receivers do not have the sensitivity of solid-state receivers. S band radars are obsolete.

    We have a 'Your Speed Is' unit set up on the edge of town, been there for about a year. My Redline always picks it up starting around 6 miles out.
    A couple months ago, the Redline quit detecting it even though its in use, and I noticed a blue LED light (small) in the middle of the sign at that same time.
    I've noticed that same blue LED on several of these signs throughout the midwest that the Redline doesn't doesn't sniff out.
    Is th e frequency of the blue LED somehow mixing with the radar freq, thus making it so the Redline can't sort the 2 two?

    KU Band is big overseas because in a lot of European countries over there (like the UK) like to use photo radar. Big in Australia too. So the antenna size is not an issue because it's a big box with IR and Flash for a camera, they can get you day or night, and in a lot of those countries radar detectors are illegal. One might worry that photo radar may come to the US. I don't think thats a high likelihood based on the general public opposition to red light cameras but who knows. Anyway, there are lot of manufactures who would love to sell those KU photo radars in the US. And from experience, many photo radars are a very weak signal that shoots to catch you from behind, like no more than 50 feet. You need a really really good detector. Most will only give you a weak beep and its too late your picture is taken already.

    So X doesn’t matter to much, K is basically just slow down before it’s too late, KA it’s slow down immediately or your dead, and laser is slam the breaks? And determining the color from grey to dark red also determines that close distance and danger?

      +Juan Navarro See this video to find out what's in use in your area: th-cam.com/video/n2UIfQUGqUE/w-d-xo.html
      As for why they'd run different frequencies, it may come down to cost, antenna size preferences, contracts with different suppliers, they're saving money and using old hardware rather than buying new equipment, and so on. Many reasons. :)

    • @VortexRadar
      @VortexRadar  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's many many different types of speed cams. Some use radar (all sorts of different frequencies and power levels), some use laser, some use cameras, some use sensors in the road, etc. The newest RD's from Escort, Uniden, and Radenso can pick many of them up, plus they have GPS to alert you to fixed photo locations which is especially nice if they're not using radar or laser in the first place.

    According to RDFGS Geographic Survey. It says K Band is used where I live. However I've never encountered a LEO using K Band to capture speed. I've passed many "Your Speed" signs and automatic door opener, ect. Because the V1 gives a lot of K Band false alerts I ended up shutting off K Band. Would you recommend this?
    Do Highway Patrolman ever use K Band or is it mostly KA Band?

    • @VortexRadar
      @VortexRadar  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some areas only use Ka which is great. K is still used all over so it's good to use your best judgement, especially if K is still reported as in active use. Shutting K off can be helpful at times. Applying lots of filters to K can really help too.

      ZX10Alex Not in any way. That's more about the detector's design and sensitivity to different frequencies, as well as how well the radar gun itself is design, but there's nothing that says one frequency is inherently more precise than another anymore than saying the colors on channel 4 on my TV are more accurate than the colors on channel 3 because it's a different channel.

    So in theory as time goes on police will be using v and w ? also with higher frequencies does this mean detecting speed will be clocked much farther then with KA or K ?

    • @VortexRadar
      @VortexRadar  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Vegas “Vegas747” Seven four seven Distance isn't a function of the frequency being used in this regard. There's also no reason for manufacturers to reengineer their current tech to use new frequencies, get the approvals from the FCC to use those frequencies, etc. So in theory anything is possible, but there's not much practical reason to do that.

    • @thevegas737
      @thevegas737 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      So smaller higher frequency entennas have nothing to do with distance ?

    • @VortexRadar
      @VortexRadar  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Vegas Seven four seven No, that's not part of it. Even if it did, these guns are only designed to be used for a few thousand feet away at the absolute max and that's well within the range of what these units are capable of. You'll have more range limits due to things like hills, traffic, curves, and so on than you will due to the choice of frequency.

    How do you find out if X bands are used in your area, other than just having a detector and finding out for yourself?

    • @VortexRadar
      @VortexRadar  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brandon Shaw This'll show you how: th-cam.com/video/n2UIfQUGqUE/w-d-xo.html The X band listings there aren't totally accurate and there's less in use than what you'll see there, but that'll get you pointed in the right direction.

    • @VortexRadar
      @VortexRadar  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Enrique Valiente There's better products out there for the money like the Beltronics RX65 S7 and Uniden LRD950. I wouldn't recommend the Whistlers at all at this point.

    • @EnriqueValienteEMPrankz
      @EnriqueValienteEMPrankz 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      i kknow it just that im buying it for only 68$

    • @VortexRadar
      @VortexRadar  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Enrique Valiente Well, prepare to get owned and spend WAY more than that on speeding tickets, court costs, insurance hikes, lawyer fees, time and headache dealing with the ticket, etc. Again I don't recommend skimping out in this area... Really. If you are convinced that saving a little bit now and losing hundreds or thousands of dollars later is a worthy tradeoff, run it in Ka Max. That'll give you the most detection possible (still not enough and easy to get owned) against Ka band which is the most popular radar band in most areas.

    do you have any videos to tell when a K Band hit is LEO?

    • @VortexRadar
      @VortexRadar  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Brian Van Buskirk That's not possible to do reliably. You can enable various filters to help filter out different types of false alerts, but when the radar beam coming from a police radar gun looks exactly the same as a radar beam coming from a speed sign, grocery store, or the car next to you, there's only so much that a radar detector can do to tell the difference.

He was making u turn some where. Basically I am not sure how he could reconize my car after 15 minutes after ( i do not have a noticable car ).
