  • Chainsaw sawmill from Logosol using Stihl chansaw. Portable like an Alaskan mill but with extendable aluminium guide rail that definitely increases the precision and milling possibilities.
    Great fun for woodworkers.
    There are more amazing tools on Logosol´s website. Perfect for DIY.

    Every "medium sized" not industrial volume, tree company should be obligated to work these machines on the field at every job site...
    we negate doing a hard job, by simply wasting good materials that are hard to come by... this is brilliant for third world countries....

    I have to say this was a brilliant idea both for those who have wooded areas and those artists who make things from natural wood, the uses are so varied and wonderful.

    I use an alaskan mill and usually touch up the file by hand after every fuel up. Been at it for 15 years and don't see the need to send my chains off to a shop anymore. I do have a $30 chain sharpener just to even up the chain after 10 hours or so of cutting. Big saws are worth buying, and will go through a log faster than a bandsaw. Have you ever priced out a bandsaw blade? Thanks I'll stick to my $30 dollar chains. I run them down to the nubs and they last for weeks. Sure I lose a lot more wood than a bandsaw.. however, I buy my equipment used and I've acquired many free saws from friends, or will trade lumber/firewood for equipment. Some day I'll pick up a bandsaw, there are nice ones out there for under $3k and I would like to cut veneer which is impractical with a chainsaw. Running a saw at high rpm all the time isn't the worst thing you can do to your saw.. running uneven chain and constantly bogging down the motor is what kills them. Don't try to mill with your ol' 20" poulan. Running water coolant is a viable way to keep the bar and chain from overheating and wearing excessively yet you do have to take the extra maintenance and make sure your saw is cleaned and oiled at the end of the day. This system looks nice, yet I'd rather have a frame that holds the tip of the saw too. good luck.

    Sometimes the ONLY other option is to bring in a portable mill. When choices are limited, you do what you have to do.
    Ironically, properly curing the planks or beams can be a bigger hassle than many anticipate. Depending on the type of wood, season, and other resources. But if you're just making out buildings or a small barn, it's a great alternative.

    Nice! Somebody needs to make a thinner titanium saw blade for this. Chainsaw blades are rather thick, it would waste less wood, cut faster, and place less stress on your chainsaw. You can thank me later. :o) Very nice though.

      IntoxicatedHumans
      Problem is you have to let the wood season before you use it as if you put it in right away, it will warp... brother built his own house doing this (has a bandsaw sawmill) and before he put the drywall up, he had to cut and shim the 2x4s in the walls to make them straight again

    • @TheEightfoldPath_
      @TheEightfoldPath_ 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Franklin Yes of course, but this is the complete counterpart of bringing materials in by chopper.
      And letting it dry is just a matter of storage, a windy place with some tarp over it and a good amount of spacers does the trick.

    Maybe but some people don't want the mill coming on their property and cutting only the trees the forester says to...which are usually the largest and nicest trees on the property. The mill often over cuts when the landowner just wants 10-12,000bf cut. Most mills wont waste their time on owner selected logging. Usually you cannot trust a mill. 1-2 truckloads turns into 10-20.

  • @brokepro
    @brokepro 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    If a guy is rich enough to pay someone to custom saw his wood or just to lazy then he would not need this would he. So many that have opinions and no time to waste..then why are they on the internet making derogatory statements if their time is so precious? I myself think that for a guy that has access to logs this would be an affordable way to make some lumber for personal use or selling. Good for you and your Alaskan mill..

  • @DonatoThomas

    Can't do that in California, it's illegal to bring timber to a mill unless you got the logging permit first. And that starts at $5,000. Plus, how is the average Joe gonna get the equipment to truck that log cheaper than that rail setup?
    I've used an Alaskan mill quite extensively, and for ~$200 and a bit of time, it is a very cost effective method. One 'trick' is to get a skip tooth chain or better yet a ripping chain, not your common chain, but still easy to get.
