JEFF! I have a cracked basement wall slightly bowed in my small four plex. Emailed a local civil engineering firm and based off my description they quoted me 3500$ Canadian to do an inspection and provide a repair solution including permit and construction drawings. That is more than I collect in rent in two months. This is why I've been paying for this badge for 2+ years. Is there any reasonable way out of this that doesn't start with giving the enginerds 3.5k right off the bat??????? Please help me

I use spackling compound for nail holes because it doesn’t shrink when dry. Also use a wet cloth to wipe excess caulk off the trim. Makes for a better paint job later.
Good video. One trick I learned from an old timer is to take specific measurements from the 1 inch mark. Just make sure you deduct an inch from your final measurement. Helps get an accurate measurement without having to worry about the hook of the tape measure moving back and forth
I like and learn from your stuff. In the end I see the value of getting an experienced guy like you to the job. You run into all sorts of janky construction possibilities and know how to work around them. A guy like me is just stumped. TH-cam will never replace experience.
Noramlly I don't have any issues with anything you teach or show on the channel, a big fan infact... But... as a Finish Carpenter... You made that measuring and explaining the window trim much harder than it had to be for the average homeowner. If you're going for a 1/8 reveal on the window trim just measure the inside of the opening, add 1/4 because 1/8 for each side, and then cut a piece at that size but have your piece turned the other way on the saw and you don't have to do all that math of adding and accounting for having to cut on the long side. I understand that your specialty isn't Finish Carpentry, but normally your methods are pretty spot on and don't waste time , so by no means am I trying to critisize your work. Still a fan of your work Jeff!
Huge fan as well. I agree. You made this more complicated for the DIY person.
Easier to mark your eighth inch reveal on each side then put a tape on it to get your overall.
It is faster and more productive to do it the way you explained but for someone who doesn’t do trim carpentry every day it is actually easier for them to understand it the way Jeff explains because they see exactly why they’re adding the quarter inch in real time.
But the fact that he's cutting from the long side to the short instead of short side to long... That is making him have to do extra math. If he flipped his piece of trim the way it's supposed to lay on the saw then he wouldn't have to do extra math and all he would have to do is cut from short to long side instead of long to short. That's alot of extra time spent for math for no reason.@@tristanmartinez2667
Plus if you're ever working with a big window there's no way you're going to be able to hold the tape measure exactly 1/8 on one side while going to the other side and trying to hold it up to your other mark. @@tristanmartinez2667
I actually prefer his detailed explanation why he does things. It helps me understand it more.
I still prefer millimeters over fractions of inches. Much easier to add and subtract.

Perfect time to ask question with you having to use these harbor freight tools over your normal tools what differences you can feel and notice and if its worth the extra for the name brands!
Check out the Jennings speed tip. Add it to the tip of your caulking tube for a perfect bead of filler.
I'm preparing to replace some trim in my house so the timing of this video is perfect; however, I wish the videography wasn't all over the place as it made it difficult to follow/see what you were doing at times. Thank you for explaining how to add fractions! Middle school was a very long time ago!

That may be the first time I ever saw someone use window and door trim for baseboards but I guess it works for you, not sure I would use it , I’ve used regular 1x4s and 1x6s for window,door and baseboard trim.

Huh??? My wife's a subscriber; she watched this video with hopes of learning how to do 45's in corners. She's never used a chop saw before. She kept talking about miter cuts and coping -- she knows that something needs to be done, but she doesn't know how to do it. You do great work and she learns a lot from your videos, but this one was way above her head. How do you make 45's meet one another without having to add tons of caulk?
I've been watching different videos all morning trying to find someone talking about that because it's been ages since I've done finish work.
Cutting miters is as simple as putting your piece on a miter saw and swinging it to the desired degree. Cutting good miters is a whole different story. I would recommend purchasing a "miter gauge/protractor" it will greatly add to the accuracy of your cuts, especially if you are cutting trim mouldings that are installed against walls. Coping is the process of cutting a 45 degree miter and then carefully trimming away the profile of your cut piece with a coping saw. This results in a cut that will fit neatly and nest over a square adjoining piece and make your corner. Coping, while more difficult, will give you better results. It's simply more dynamic. For ensuring that you don't need to fill your joints with caulk, which you should never rely on to hide your mistakes, make sure the work you are planning to install the mouldings on is square (90 degrees). Then when you cut your two 45 degree miters make sure that you glue your joints with a thin bead of good quality wood glue. Make sure you keep your nails, on the face of the trim, about 2 inches away from the joint, and once face nailed you can carefully nail with a thin brad nail the corners of the miters, one ought to do per side, to make sure they don't move around. Hope this helps
Making sure your saw is calibrated really helps. Sneaking up on the cut really helps getting the best possible look as well. He does it on the video where he makes multiple cuts to get closer and closer to the perfect 45
For ALL nails going into jamb (window, door...) ALWAYS position gun perpendicular to the run to avoid blow out due to nail point geometry and orientation in gun. In other words, for top & bottom pieces, hold the gun like "normal"...like a firearm, but for side pieces, tilt it sideways (90°). If/when the nail strays, it will do so left or right, but will at least remain hidden within the jamb.
Took me a couple minutes to figure out what you were saying. To clarify for too and bottom hold the gun with the handle pointing down/ip but for the side pieces hold it with the handle pointing right/left. That makes a lot of sense and I will be doing that from now on. Thanks!

Good video! My youngest son is a finish trim carpenter. This is a perfect DIY project for homeowners as you can make a huge difference in how your home looks with better trim. Granted, it does take some practice, but it's definitely not rocket science by any means. You can spend or as little as you want doing it, but honestly, even a few dollars worth of trim done right can make a huge difference. All you really need is a miter saw, some finish nails or nail gun ,caulking and some paint.
Caulk and paint make a carpenter what he ain't.
Your good at that and young enough to be able to bend and crouch down without knee and to much back pain. I used to have a friend who was good at it like you. I miss him so much because he died about ten years ago. He was older than you and died too young

nice, but try the electrical tape. you can unpeel it if it was wrapped too tight and reuse as many times as needed and still have some flexability!

Jeff, i need help! I bought a trailer in Melbourne FL about 2 years ago. It was mostly down to the studs when i purchesed. I have been working on it since. I have had soooo many people help me with different projects but most did an awful job. Is there a better way to discuss my issues with you? Im mostly worried about my windows. They installed windows before i bought the place, that I have been told are for a masonary building.....so they leak and I am worried that my home is rotting from the inside! I am at the point where I need to DIY. TIA! ❤

thanks for the video. I just did window trim in my one room. the window casing was proud. had to get creative. be curious to see what you would do in a proud jam case.
pull it and rip it down. of back fill the casing with a rectangle from the trim aisle
Just curious how many of you glue the whole frame together before installing it and how many install it one piece at a time? I’ve seen videos of some of the top pros and they glue everything together and then install it but I don’t see the result being that much better to justify the extra work and risk of it not fitting.
This is how I prefer to do it. I get get perfect corners that way with no need to sand on paint grade.
I measure all my jamb pieces, assemble them and attach the trim (i glue all my joints because theyll split if you dont). Then slide the whole unit into the window opening and nail it.
Its way faster to go around the entire house with a notepad, get every window measurement and then mass assemble everything at once instead of moving your crap room to room assembling each.

Awesome video, just one problem with window wood sills are they tend to warp over time with condensation from the windows! Is there a work around for this issue?
Same thing for if a home needs a good mopping and the base trims are wood tend to peal because water and wood do not mix well!

Older mobile homes like mine have electrical coming from under floor and down from ceiling. Hard to tell from which direction without taking the paneling off to check.
Couple places I have the wiring coming up through the floor, to the box, the up to the ceiling, over to a ceiling light, then back to a wall and down to a switch. Like, what the af. Imma lose my mind, lol.
when in doubt never nail perpendicular or vertical to any electrical. Cheers!

6:07 A step I love to see, always should have clean jobsite, cleanup at end of everyday and do general sweep/Hoover if needs it a bit (like not leaving piles of saw dust on floor); and NEVER use homeowners appliances as work tables or storage areas, as it’s bad thing to do, imo, but hey….if disagree go for it.
Also like seeing electrical boxes being hooverred out before cover plate goes on as again, makes things c,ean and gets junk out if areas don’t really want/need. And the cavity around a bathtub IS NOT A BIN for trades to use as a catch me all, just saying😉

Is base shoes not needed anymore when putting baseboards? My baseboards have base shoes and all the videos I have watched many videos DIY. Noone used base shoe to the baseboards.
What do you do with the gap between wood and the window?
There is a gap between my sheetrock and floor. When I try to install baseboards, they curl in at the bottom. I was thinking I would just put a spacer in there to prevent it from curling under. Is there a better way to deal with this situation? Thanks - Great videos!

What did you do to that inside corner that splits open? Probably overkill to spend the time coping all those inside corners. I found a digital angle finder sometimes to be helpful so you're not just cutting everything assuming it's a square 90. Flat trim makes it easy too... profile is already coped :)
And why not use a coping saw on internal skirting board joins
I noticed you don't cope your trim. Can you show me how to cope unusual angles like 45, 60, & 135?

Do you have to use a nail gun with compressor, or are there good non-compressor nail gun alternatives?
Pretty sure there's some cheap electric staplers/trim nailers, battery nailers are expensive AF even if you already own batteries. Or, for DIY, you could just tack it in position with tape or weak adhesive and use a hammer. All that said, small pneumatic nailers (anything below framing) will run off even the smallest compressors. Hardware stores and even Walmart sell compressor/nailer/hose/nail complete kits from $99 to $199 and you can buy the components for even less at the expense of a weaker compressor.

You can build the casing as one piece then glue it to the wall with construction adhesive.

Wow, trimming out that window, u made it 100% more difficult, all the math.
Maybe in Canada u leave 1/8" Reveal, down here 3/8-1/4.
O plus, when u were cutting the trim, u on 1 end were cutting it wrong compared to the rotation of your blade.
I worked with a Contractor at 1 time in my career and like u, this being 1 of your worst work, we were Trimming Out, he carried a Caulk Gun on his belt and we were doing High End Work.

If it's a load bearing foundation wall the only way to brace that is to dig the slab down to the footing, sheet the wall with 3/4 pressure treated ply and dimplex matting, then run 3 or 4 inch steel angle iron boltedto the floor joists and down to the footing then fill the slab back in with concrete around all the steel angle.
Its going to be 10-15K plus to fix that if you can't DIY depending on how many linear feet of wall need to be braced and what city your in as construction costs vary across Canada.
I've had to do multiple and this is always the engineers recommendation.
Also, $3500 is insane. The last engineer I used to draw & stamp me a plan for this same issue was $1100 and that included their initial inspection of the foundation.

This is just a trailer that comes in on wheels. Its not classified as a house therefore it doesn't gain value over time. He also mentioned he was just slapping this window together to "be done" and i would assume, to make a video.
Take pride in your work. A 1/2” caulk line is pathetic. Shame on you!
On second viewing, this is really bad advice.
