I just watched the movie for the first time, this is hands down one of my favorite scenes in all of cinema. This scene is literally what all Shonen anime are based off. It's so ridiculously dramatic and epic but it's so dramatic that it becomes sort of satirical and funny but not to the point where you can't take it seriously at all. That's really difficult to pull off.
In the ending boss fight he uses all 8 Gods to defeat the boss. You can see him use all 8 and its just amazing how deep it goes, because they don't tell you that he is using them, you just have to remember this scene and the specialty of each God, like the cripple, the beauty, the flute player, and the double kick god.
the fact he wanted to combine all the styles for the movies is one of the best showcases of the style. Until i saw the first movie I didnt know he did it for both.
He didnt train enough for the drunken goddess so he doesnt use her style. Thats why he also asked his master to train it to him on the spot. Then Sam Seed tells him to combine everything he has learned to create his own drunken god and acted girly with that one
he skipped the last god, the woman. he tells his master he never learned that one, and just faked it. his master tells him she's just the other 7 combined. he figures it out and wins. atleast thats how i remember it.
You highlight some great aspects of the final boss fight. Because the 8 drunk god's scene is so hypnotic, you dont realize how much a part of you, the viewer it becomes. So in the final boss conflict not only does Jackie fight: You also fight because you too recall the postures and techniques of the drunken spiritual beings, and you fight alongside the young hero. You could say that it was a clever piece of filmaking, because you fell in love with the nieve, simple character so consumately portrayed by Jackie Chan at the height of his physicality: I think Jackie was only about 19 years old then. The 1970s was the height of martial arts movies in UK. I can recall the frustration of waiting for "Drunken Master" to feature at my local cinema. Perhaps you can also recall those late night cinema experiences ? ❤🤗🥋😮🥂🥋😅🖤
At 5 years old, I thought this movie was great fun. Now, at 45, I realize how epic this movie is. The music score is majestic, the story is way deeper than it looks, and the acrobatics are just pure poetry in motion. This movie has aged well for me.
@@yashtiwari5604 Drunken Master is a Taoist fable disguised as a slapstick comedy. The 8 Drunken Gods are a reference to the 8 Immortals of Taoism. Freddie's defeat and humiliation at the hands of Thunderleg, and his transformation into a master fighter can be seen as the death of ego and rebirth, which is a Taoist/Buddhist concept. Freddie himself is a sort of Ying-Yang. He is a delinquent and arrogant, yet shows kindness and justice when the poor vendor has his jade destroyed by the man who refused to pay him. Also, both Beggar-So and Wong Fei were real-life figures in Chinese history, although they lived during different time periods.
When I was a kid in the VHS days, my older brother was hectically into Martial Arts. I remember he got Drunken Master and Snake in the Eagle's Shadow. And I was so obsessed with these movies I would watch them all the time (usually when I was sick laying on the couch). Fond memories. Not many movies make me smile like these.
In my childhood I saw these two because they used to come on a certain channel. "UTV Action" in India. Haven't completed "Master With Cracked Fingers" yet. Been years, will see it some day.
The music really helps make this scene. Don't get me wrong Jackie's exhibition is peak form, but the music is chef kiss and a cherry on top. This is probably my favorite kung-fu movie ever.
Thanks so much for original dubbing! Can't stand the more recent stuff as I had all these kung fu films on VHS and find the dubbing far more original and witty than now.
Me and my brothers used to watch this. One day we must have watched it over 3 times, and we decided to play fight in drunk style. We drank all the Vimto in the cupboard... my little brother pissed the bed 😂 Aaah good days 😆
It was argued that Jackie Chan only did funny films but I always tell people to take a look at his older films to see how he expressed Kung Fu magnificently and with grace and precision.
Dude! This is the dub version I've been looking for. It's the funniest version. I'm only finding a different dub online. This version is way more comical.
The moves in this series of forms are accurate. You can literally stand up and do the moves as you see him doing them and learn it. That's how he's learning it from the old man, by watching and copying. Once you learn the moves and the order they come in, repeated practice trains muscle memory and on instinct your body will know where to go and what to do before you can choose what to do, but the repeated practice is the key to it all for training muscle memory. It helps obviously if you have a teacher to actively correct you and critique you, no doubt, and that is what really irons it all out, a teacher will be able to keep your form near and prevent bad habits from forming in the first place, but you can learn just by watching it in sections on loops and repeating what you see
I once had this video at low volume and on loop for 7 hours or so while reviewing for my first Microbiology exam junior year of college, needless to say i did well on that exam. I have no idea why the sound of these moves and music was calming while studying haha.
Allright! Finally the original English dub! This is by far better, than that re realeased, re dubbed english crap! This version is superior and more funny than the newer version. Thanks to the uploaded for this rare gem!! I wish I could have a copy!
In addition, regardless of how it's portrayed in fiction, if you tried to perform Zui Quan while actually intoxicated, you would be very likely to hurt yourself. Despite appearing off-balance and unpredictable, it takes the utmost balance to be successful. The moves have a lot of misdirection (making your opponent think you're off balance when you're not, etc).
This is the version I had on VHS for years and years. Watched this with my brothers and my mates so many times that we could practically quote the whole movie word for word. So when I finally replaced it on DVD and the dub was completely different, it felt weird. I mean, he's not even called Sam Seed any more! But it will always be one of my favourite Hong Kong movies.
Drunken fist is actually one of the most mechanically genius techniques using rounded movements and strikes to bypass guards, strike at strange angles, and use arms locks. One of the other ingenious practices are coiling and loosening the muscles to absorb strikes, stay balanced, and attack faster and more unexpectedly
The move of the drunken fist technique is unpredictable the fast movement the skills its actually a good strategy to use against mutiple people its kinda more like tai chi but more better.
@@maxzhao8331 first of all there is three major videos of drunken kung fu being used: 1. they were both pretty equally matched 2. Drunken was beaten by a karate practitioner 3. Drunken beat a MMA fighter. And all of those are about as least concrete evidence you can get, you don't base the effectiveness of a style on a few fights you see on TH-cam, you base it on whether or not the principles, techniques, and training methods seem appliable or effective, I'm guessing you're not a experienced martial arts/combat sports or you would have known this already.

Almost 14 years later and people are still enjoying this clip from drunken master. HK Rescue did release a good quality blu ray version with the original audio but from what I hear they're no longer shipping or producing disks. You can still find them online at your favourite pirate site or on usenet. It might be time to upload a better quality version 😁
This dub version was better than the other re-dub, which totally destroyed the character names. The Other Re-dub had a lot of grunting that wasn't needed.
Lü Dongbin: The drunkard with internal strength. Iron-Crutch Li(Tieguai Li): Drunken cripple with a powerful right leg. Han Zhongli(Zhongli Quan): The drunken god holding a pot. Lan Caihe: With a sudden waist attack. Elder Zhang Guo(Zhang Guo Lao): The drunk god with a double kick. Royal Uncle Cao(Cao Guojiu): The god with a throat lock. Dance of the drunken mantis with beggar So and Rubberlegs was one of my all-time faves.
First jacky chan movie i ever saw! So its still my fav movie of all time.
My Hero... ❤
Always enjoy watching old martial arts movies, love the drunken master stye.
The original dubbing just like remember. 👍
There are lots of videos on youtube from fitness gurus on how to make one leg squat, but I never ever saw someone actually do a real one leg squat like Jackie does in 0:56
this was ahead of its time
The fact that the original creator was some drunk kungfu master who managed to remember his moves when he fought while wasted is hilarious.
I use to love this movie when I was a kid seen it over a 100 times brilliant flim love you Jackie chan ❤
The best film ever.
As an extreme alcoholic myself I would love to learn this style but from 8 gods....it will take time and perfection
I remember watching this when I was 12 (now 30) and I thought the idea of a drunk martial artist was silly at the time. Now it’s one of my all-time favourite movies in existence ❤️ this scene with that specific soundtrack is just epic
Lei wulong WINS
Mulher pelada
Not only Lei Wulong of Tekken used the drunken techniques...one of Dead or Alive characters is Brad Wong used the drunken techniques...
I think Boraicho from Mortal Kombat uses it as well. Or is he just drunk?
@@gabriel_alemdoaquario hes just drunk

Almost 14 years later and people are still enjoying this clip from drunken master. HK Rescue did release a good quality blu ray version with the original audio but from what I hear they're no longer shipping or producing disks. You can still find them online at your favourite pirate site or on usenet. It might be time to upload a better quality version 😁
This dub version was better than the other re-dub, which totally destroyed the character names.
The Other Re-dub had a lot of grunting that wasn't needed.
TOTALLY agree!!
Captures ALL the comedy essence as well...
This is what Fuudo watched before going into a Virtua Fighter tournament.
Philosopher Han Xiang(Han Xiang Zi): The drunken player of the flute.
Immortal Woman He(He Xiangu): The drunken woman flaunting her body.
The way Jackie does those head flips while his arms are folded behind his back, fuckin sick. Thats masterful right there
People who think karate kid has hard training should watch jackie chan 70 movie
This guy is a Saint.
