    Very informative on sit in vs sit on top. It'd be a tough decision, but how you explained the distance you may be going and if you were taking alot of gear, having both as you do, would be ideal if you were an avid kayaker. Thanks Gabe. Taught me things I didn't know, once again.

    Thank you so much for these excellent tips. I love the pro/con format. 👍

    Thank you for the discussion. Have seen other videos that discuss the differences between the two and the pro's and con's you discussed were similar and come from experience. I will rent until I know whether to buy one or not especially because of the cost but also because I'm older and not as flexible as I used to be.

    Great video! Looking at doing some two-up kayaking with kids. Day trips and some camping. Sit on top your recommendation?

      If they can swim or if you can just put a life vest on them, you might consider some nice inflatable paddle boards.

    I keep wondering what the actual difference in paddling efficiency would be between a sit-in and sit-on kayak of the same length. Is it rather minuscule if you're not interested in covering miles and miles or racing the nearest speed boat?

    One point that is important to me but was not addressed was the water conditions determining preference for sit in versus sit on kayak for example class 1 or class 2 Waters of rivers versus flat water paddling of lakes and rivers which would be the better choice in those situations..

    Man that was great infomeration about the two kayaks. I had to go with a sit-on-top kayak because of my wide feet. I have big very very extremely wide feet sz15 6 EEEEEE wide with very chubby fat wide toes that are equally straight across making my foot very very wide at 6 1/2 inches wide from my big toe to my lil toe. & it really doesn't help that my toes are straight across instead of being at a 45-degree angle like everybody else's toes are. I tried to sit in a sit inside kayak and my foot got stuck inside the kayak because of my toes being so wide. They almost had to call 911 to come cutting my foot out of a brand new sit inside kayak. One of the salesmen had wide feet too & he asked me was this my flip flop he had in his hand? You can clearly see my Worn out wide 4 toe footprint on my flip flop. ( my 5 toe hangs off the footbed of the flip-flops because of my toes being very wide) I said yes that is mine. The salesman then say your toes are wider than mines & I thought I had some wide feet. I also think the size of it being a 15 has something to do with it too so I had to go with the sit on top. & #2. I am a big chubby dude at 300 lb & I could find a sit-on-top to hold my weight but I couldn't in a sit in side kayak at the time. But I found a sit inside kayak that can hold my weight & a buddy of mine say he can plastic weld in the foot section in the front of the kayak for my feet to have plenty of space and clearance to move my feet and toes without it getting stuck inside the kayak. So I'm looking to buy a sit inside kayak 4 kayak camping.

      Wow, I’m glad this info helped. Yeah, it seems like you need a sit on top for sure.

    Gabe, is there no type of drain valve on the sit in style kayaks in order to more easily drain them? Like what one would find on a common cooler? I'm imagining it would be as easy as tipping the kayak upright and opening the drain plug ???

    • @oursimplestorychannel
      @oursimplestorychannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! Different kayaks have different plugs and plug sizes. Yes, most kayaks, even sit on top, have plugs and drains as you mentioned. Good to hear from you!

    What about with smaller kids 6 and under. Do you recommend tandem kayaks or single ones and then put the kids on your lap?

      Single with them sitting in the cockpit. That’s what my five year old does.

    Thanks, that was pretty informative. My second question is, should I buy a tandem kayak, if I mainly go by myself, but occasionally would like to take somebody with me? Or in other words, is it really bad to paddle solo in a tandem kayak?

    • @oursimplestorychannel
      @oursimplestorychannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I own a tandem kayak and they are manageable to kayak in alone. I would say your answer depends on how often you’ll be going alone vs with a partner.

    • @ashleighmason4982
      @ashleighmason4982 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a difficult decision, because I can afford only one kayak. I would say half time solo, and the other half with a 6-year old. Is there such thing, as 1,5 person kayak? 🙆🏼‍♀️

    • @oursimplestorychannel
      @oursimplestorychannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I see. No, there’s not really a 1.5 kayak. I take my almost 5 year old with me on trips and sit him between my legs on the bottom of the boat and he pretends to help me paddle. My 8 year old has his own. How would you transport two? Do you have a way to do that?

    • @ashleighmason4982
      @ashleighmason4982 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I live by the lake, so I would have to carry the kayak for about half a mile each time. I'm afraid that the tandem will be to heavy for me. But my kid likes paddling 😊

    • @oursimplestorychannel
      @oursimplestorychannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In that case, I would save up for a tandem canoe, inflatable tandem or hard shell tandem and buy a wheeled carrier for it. The inflatable would not need a carrier.

    Watching that child duck under that log was scary as hell! NEVER go under a log like this! Great way to drown. You can get stuck and flip or there could be another log just under the one you're going over and that can create a real mess. BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!

    Sit on tops preferred by most people in warm climates!

  • @firstname4337
    @firstname4337 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    shorter distance sounds like you'd be carrying less gear (lunch, first aid, toilet paper, trowel)
    longer distance seems like you'd be carrying more gear (camping)

    • @oursimplestorychannel
      @oursimplestorychannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that’s likely correct, unless you do your duty before you get on the boat ;)

    Why not tow the kayak that has your gear in it?
