Hello viewers, a representative Jotul North America contacted me on Monday after the release of this video. They were apologetic about the paint issues, offered several theories of what may have happened. They also offered several solutions, talked about their manufacturing process etc. I came away convinced that this is not a normal occurrence. I was also completely satisfied with any of the several resolutions they offered. (A new Stove etc). In the end, I was happy to accept a free T shirt and some Jotul Swag). Overall I am very happy with this stove and would buy it again. (And I did buy it for full retail price).
I dusted my new Jotul with a dry cloth and the paint came off around the logo. This was a very expensive Woodstove to have this happen. What were some of their solutions?
Did they explain why their quality control people checked off on paint but actually clearly didn't check it at all? That's what bugs me the most. If I owned the company I would have let you know as the customer that the employee in question had either been spoken to and retrained, or let go bc we don't accept mistakes like this as a company. Unacceptable IMO.
I saw the most beautiful, massive, ornate cast iron stove yesterday in sw Michigan. It was made in the UP a good lifetime ago and transported to the lower echelons of the mitten on account of love. Yep, a UP man fell in love with a mitten lady and brought his stove to warm her heart. Good thing it didn't fit in my pocket because I'd have been sore tempted... It was still in operation, though the mitten lady is no longer of this realm and the UP man is in Florida with one of their sons. When you install a cast iron stove or plant a rose garden, you're also reaching out to future generations.
You would never believe all the messes we got into years ago installing stoves and liners !!! Great video, I miss the hearth business ! Jotul makes amazing products ! Thanks again !
That the Jøtul stove is actually painted makes me rise a eyebrow. In Scandinavia, we simply use "sot paste" or "stove paste" to maintain and keep the stoves protected and black. If you dont have it, let me know and ill send some over for you to try! Keeps the stove protected and in really good shape! Beautiful stove and a good job with the protective wall and floor! :)

Your cabin is a beauty!! I’ve been following along for a few months now and really enjoy your craftsmanship! I’m looking forward to the day that I can do a similar project. Hope you and your family had a nice Thanksgiving!!
Looking good! When I remodeled my kitchen, the cabinet maker asked me to do a review of their cabinets. I stated they were great quality, very happy. Only flaw was a slightly warped door on one cabinet, which I was prepared to live with. About ten days later a new door showed up on my porch. It’s worth sending them an email. On another note, I think it’s time for some stairs!
That was nice of them to send you a new door. I have had the same thing with warped doors happen on two different sets of cabinets from Home Depot/American Wood Mark.
What you are seeing is the refractory cement that is used on the cast iron joints. the stove is coated / polished stove black not paint. Some of the "quick fixes" people suggested would be great if it wasn't a working stove. Most would smoke, burn and degrade. By all means contact the seller or Jotel and ask for guidance or maybe try looking at the paperwork that comes with the stove. Thanks for video. PV install looks good.
I agree totally with Debra. I just did a job with high end custom cabinets with three totally obvious paint issues (10” square + each). I contacted the company, took photos and they not only sent out replacement doors, they gave me $1000 back “for my time and trouble”. We should never “accept” such false craftsmanship - they market quality at a premium price, they need to provide it. I’d share a link to this video too, perhaps making their name more prominent!
I agree - contact the Yotul company, and see what they will do for you. Even if they send you some paint to patch it up. At least the paint is the same as what's on the stove now. I'd hope for some kind of refund, or make goods. We totally understand not wanting to take the stove back. We're looking for a wood stove, and Yotul is one of the brands we were considering. Not sure now, as those marks would drive us crazy. Nice job on the hearth and mantle. Maureen
I'll keep you guys posted if I do anything about the paint issue. All in all it's a very nice stove, it's a shame to make something that nice and then mess up one little thing!
I agree with the others to pay good money for something and have flaws is unexceptable. I wouldn't want to have to take it out so a matching paint and a credit of some kind is in order to keep their good name and faith with customers
That was some great photography at the beginning of your video. Appears your road is still holding up also. Really disappointing that the finish on your new stove wasn't quality work. You've had quite a few cold nights there before you put the heater in the bedroom. Here's hoping that I knew stove will keep you toasty and warm. Thanks again for taking time out to make a video and share your experience.
Hey thank you Neil. Yes the road does seem to be holding up pretty well. The guy that I get gravel from never showed up all year, so that was disappointing but at least I didn't have to pay for any stone yet.
I'm sure alot of your viewers would like to see you contact the manufacturer. It may lead to better products for the next guy. With your channel I would think they would want to do something about the problem for your satisfaction. Let us know, thanks mike🦃
I haven't got my cabin up yet here in Michigan, but my stove will definitely be one from Vermont Castings . These stoves are truly amazing capable of burning up to 16 hours on a single load. There is no excuse for shoddy workmanship especially for a man like you- a genuine perfectionist if I ever saw one ! I hope that stove works good for you though - Cheers .
Lovely Jotul! We had one like that 30 years ago in our country farm house in Central Maine! Complain to the people that you bought it from about the paint job. They may give you a whole can of the paint to fix those few spots where the paint came off. We love dowers end it keeps Coals overnight hot and ready to go in the morning. It looks great!!
Thank you, it really is a nice stove. The area where the paint is bad just kinda gets covered with ash anyway, so I guess it's not the biggest deal. It's been keeping me warm thats for sure.
Finally the video I’ve been waiting for! Jotul makes a great stove don’t let that finishing bring you down. That stove will do you right. You might want to check the black pipe instructions usually the crimp side goes up. 👍 Can’t wait for the next one!!!
NICE STOVE. Make sure that pipe to stove connection is Tite. From the video it doesn't look like it is in all the way. You may have the pipe upside down. DOUBLE CHECK THE PIPE LAYOUT!!! Perfect size stove for your cabin. LOVE IT, STAY WARM‼️👍👍. Vinny 🇺🇸
Looks nice, dont worry that paint will burn off anyway. Just touch it up. I have had three wood burners over the years and I would have gone with triple stainless lined chimeny pipe all the way up. Lasts forever and never wears out. Less cleaning and safer. Duravent is one brand.
Thanks Mathew, it doesn't bother me all that much. I bought double wall and then some triple wall stainless for when it goes through the roof and outside.

Já bych volil komín v místnosti z jedné vrstvy silnějšího plechu, pak bezpečný průchod střechou a část nad komínem dvoustěnovou s izolací mezi plechy. Až tam nastává silné ochlazování a kondenzace, které izolace zabrání, aby nebyla tak velká.
Usually people just paint their wood stove with engine high heat paint. You could touch that up in a second. You can buy it at auto parts store or Walmat. Looks nice. You could spray some in the lid and dip a small model paint brush in it and touch it up easily. You will find out next year or after that you will be spraying the whole stove over again with engine paint.
These are great yes, I spent the extra cash and bought a Arrow wood burner. What I like about mine is mine came with a variable speed blower system in the rear that takes heat from the inside cavity , that has two exhaust vents in the front...and once its going be prepared to remove your clothing. Some years ago here in Illinois we had a - 23 week and with the burner going the inside of my 1000 sq. home the inside temperature was in the 85 degree range...at one point I was opening the windows a bit. The inside of the closets were the same temp as the house. But know what your doing. Have a magnetic temp. gauge on the flue pipe to regulate the highs and lows pipe temperature. Cold/cool is bad 125 deg. and 250 range is best to remove the build up of the unburnt gasses, build up causes fires. Be safe and enjoy. Yes I cut my own trees down, used my splitter to keep me supplied. Its hard work but saves lots of $$$ 😊
Its a good thing you did not decide to buy enameled Yotul,we did and enamel started to lift off after one season of use.Nice stoves but poor finish, thats for sure !
Thats too bad to hear, we wanted the next size up with an enamel finish but just couldn't stomach the price. Guess I'm glad we got the one we did. As long as the stove works well I'll be happy.
Looks awesome! Great tips about clearances. Soon that thing will be cranking and heating up that whole cabin....just in time. Looking forward to see how you finish venting it and sealing it. Keep up the great work!
Bummer about the missing paint .....I just hooked up our stove 2 weeks ago and it had some problems too ....broken fire bricks , and a dent in the back ....They gave us new fire bricks thou ....ha ! But it works great and winter is here so glad its all done and working now .....thanks for the video always good to see how everyone else out there is doing it .....
🤣🤣😆 I’ve never heard of the GAF meter. That’s awesome. I line the look of those stoves. If I ever get a shop built I want small one that doesn’t have the window but the cool deer or whatever on the sides. I like how it turned out. 11:18 that’s what she said😬 Sorry I couldn’t help myself. Take care and we’ll see you on the next video.
high heat stove black paint will cover that. It happens over time and use of stove anyway. We would clean our stove every year in summer and touch up pipe and stove as needed, protects from rust also, just FYI
Sir I am impressed with the quality of your work. Your attention to detail is awesome. It’s as if you’ve built many cabins and do this for a living. You are very humble. I love the magic hammer that’s funny. Thank you for sharing you build with us. I hope to be able to do what your doing in 6 months when I retire.
Very nice to see your progress.... love your stove... just touch up with a heat resistance paint.... al good... looking for to next video 👍 happy thanksgiving 🦃
This is great, I'm really liking your choices with the tile and grout. That looks like a smaller version of my Napoleon woodstove. Newly subscribed, liking your projects
Stove polish - little container is a couple bucks at Tractor Supply Co. or at some Home Depots. Don't use paint even the type that is heat rated for 1200 degrees will just make a stink and eventually flake off (ask me how I know). The stove polish won't last forever but you'll have to re-apply about once a season (if you burn a fair amount). Beautiful stove by the way. I'm looking for one for our new house and had a medium sized wood burner at my last house - this house would only need one about the same size as what you've installed.
You can touch up those areas of stove with some Rust-Oleum high heat grill paint. I believe it comes in black semi gloss and black matte. I have old stove that I touch up.
I hope you do the first burn on a warm sunny day because the smell is going to be horrendous. Just from experience. It does have very nice looking aesthetics and first nicely for that location. Best of luck.
I put down a 5x7 piece of Granite on a homeade landing of 1.5 inch ply and 2x4....i also put a wall underneath in basement. I hade 2x8 double floor joist on a 14 ft span... I put the wall 3 feet from blockwork
Hello, I had been following you for a while and I like your channel. You are building a beautiful cabin...but what moves me to write you is because I like the woodstove very much. It's beautiful...congratulations for your hard work...it will pay...BLESSINGS...
I think it will keep you plenty warm ! This is our second one and this one had a paint flaw as well. Other than that we have been using this one for 5+ years and are happy. @@50Acres
Great little stove, Mike! That slate looks really good too. If you haven't got one already, those 'Ecofan' heat-activated fans are all over eBay for around $35. They spread the warmth around nicely! 👍🏻
On those large format tiles you can reduce lippage by setting them on 2/3 overlap vs 1/2 overlap. But I like 1/2 better personally and depending on the tile will go that route and take the extra lippage. Basically you get tolerance buildup on LF because nothing is perfectly flat and they have a small amount of bow in the middle. The stove is beautiful and the tile and mantle look great! I am enjoying how the cabin is coming together. Happy Thanksgiving
Yea I could have gone with a 1/3 offset consistently through the whole pattern. The lippage doesn't bother me all that much though since it isn't on a floor. Thanks for watching, hope you had a good Thanksgiving.
There must be a way to obtain a can of black spray heat resistant paint from the manufacturer or the place you bought the stove. The company needs to know about this issue hopefully they will correct their inspection line. Love the stove small and nice looking. Install so far pretty easy peasy lol. Good job.
@@50Acres I use to work for a masonry fireplace company and they installed the brick surround and wood burning stove for me in my family room. There is special black metal fireplace paint that you can get for maintenance. I would suggest you call the manufacturer and send them pictures and ask them to send you the spray paint free so that you can spray it on. They should for sure back up their product. That is a very good stove and I watch another site that just installed this very same stove in his log cabin that he built in Canada.
You've got yourself a great looking place! Back in the late 70's I installed many wood stoves after the blizzard we had in the winter of '78. There was a manufacture Aurora out of Cincinnati Oh and they had a couple firemen who was installing their stoves for them without permits and they called me one evening when they heard I was liscenced and asked if I could start doing installs. I must have put in close to 50 stoves the next year or so in all different situations and in doing so I started doing more hearth builds and in some cases complete basement remodels so needless to say my business took off. You did a nice job on your install so far and I was curious on going through the roof your thimble would be at a pitch to match your roof. Back in the day they had 2 different angles of thimbles one for 6 on 12 and less and one for 6 and up to 12 on 12. I'm 64 now and retired and actually get disability from all the wear and tear those wood stoves out on my body. Keep up the good work!
Hi Richard, thats great that your business took off like that. Through the roof I have a roof support box and a roof flashing designed for 6-12/12 pitch. Getting ready to do that tomorrow hopefully it all goes smoothly.
Hey ! The paint issu. It could be stove cement that has leaked out when assembly. You can scratch it of. Not sure...but i suspect that is the thing you see on the surface below there. Could even be on the top...that someone made some cement come in conntact with you surface. Jøtul is or was known as exellent quality and are world famous ! Cheers from a Norwegian.
Bummer about the paint job not being spot on but then again Mike, the overall quality, performance and good name outweighs the headache, I totally agree. Btw, it is gorgeous. So can't wait to see the next video. Hope Y'all had a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Hope you had a great Thanksgiving!! Woodstove with the slate backdrop looks awesome. Great idea with the slats of wood to position stove and prevent scrap marks. Cant wait to see it lit up, should throw some great heat.
I prefer a single skin flue, as it radiates heat much better, but still using an insulated flue going through walls/roof. Got a wood only cast iron stove that's been in for 15 years, with zero maintenance, still works great. Occasionally I like clear glass, so it gets a clean with some salt and newspaper, but it soon soots up, and isn't worth the effort for the aesthetic
A lot of people do like the single wall, say it leaves a lot more heat in the cabin. I was pretty locked into double wall, just because I would have had to have the stove really far out into the room with single wall pipe, its clearance requirement is like 18 inches or something like that. Salt and newspaper, good tip.
your choice of oven was excellent! bar the makers stupid botches its perfect! with regards to the chimney, could you not put the flue thru the side wall then make an upright bit? im no expert so thats probably a very bad idea!! your harthblooks like you bought it like that in one piece! that was brilliant! you have done well, if only it was all done and you could look round and just think "i did this without much help! i deserve it!" 😊 cant wait to see the next vid!
Thanks for another great update vid. Are you certain about the starter section of the chimney going inside the stove collar? I would have thought it would slip over the outside of the collar. Of course designs change over the years and it has been a while since I messed with any stoves, so I could very well be mistaken. About the bad paint, I would definitely contact the source and inquire about touch-up. Even if they don't offer any, they need to hear about their sloppy craftsmanship. At the average price point for those stoves, they should be perfect right out of the crate.
I'm not sure I've got everything I need or have the stove pipe correct yet. I know the crimped side goes down so any creosote that drips down will stay inside the pipe but I have not looked to see how the inside layer of pipe fits together.
love the intro! setup almost done and looking nice.. i know you shouldn't have to because its new but get a can of stove paint and touch it up. should be good after.
Fat fingers ..it should be "and it keeps neighbors from dropping by." Funny thing is they rarely stick around to help. Your stove install was spot on. And any thought to propane back up ? I've installed both in mine and it works on a quick warm up the cottage until the wood burner gets up to temp and then off goes the propane until we leave a week later. Your gonna find you never want to leave the cabin when your finished. My wife said I get moody when I don't get to go to the lake cottage. I'm sawing cedar today ...and looking for mantas material stay warm!
I got your meaning. I do have a propane back up heater it is an RV heater, it does the trick. Now I can use the stove to get the cabin warmed up fast and the propane heater to keep the temp up if the fire burns out.
When we put new piping in and start the first fire, not only did it stink up the house but it burnt off the pipe finish. The finish on the stove won't stay the same either, but Debra C 's idea of sending a pic to the company is a good one. Why should you miss the heat and put out extra effort when they messed up.
I know it took many fires to bake the paint on our stove....then 10 yrs later we had some sassafras go off like a nuclear meltdown it was ripping uncontrolled drafting off the smallest spaces like a torch for 10 min....temp went up to 800... That was last time i smelled that paint smell...lol It did the trick
I was curious if you figured out a good way to quiet down the heater in your bedroom. My guess is that's a project for the future, but if you have already done something neat, it would be cool to see. Thanks for another great video!
Just wondering how you like the woodstove now. I just got the same one and I have about the same size cabin as you. I’m wondering if I should get single wall or double wall stove pipe for the inside. I’m afraid single wall might be too warm for such a small cabin (?) also do you ever get headaches from a vacuum created inside? I think I insulated my cabin too well I have to crack all the windows open to prevent negative air pressure, Which keeps giving me a headache. i’m using direct vent propane right now and hoping the wood stove works better.I have several CO detectors, so I know it’s not that. thanks for all of the great videos.
Beautiful stove. Nice choice. Paint doesn’t matter it going to get dirty. Just make sure the door seals And flew works. They should have caught that at the factory. Shame on the guys that signed off. Cheers 🍻
I seem to recall that the first section of pipe should be a "stove adaptor". I'm not 100% certain but I suggest you consult the Selkirk site and check if carefully if you have not done so.
@@50Acres With the double wall black pipe you want to make sure the inner pipe is joining the right way(upper goes into lower) so that any creosote will stay inside the inner pipe.
50 Acres & a Cabin you are installing the double walled stove pipe upside down. The crimped end of the inner pipe needs to be oriented towards the wood stove. Check the installation manual!
Do a light sand with a scott pad and re paint that area with 2000 + f grill paint or engine paint. Great video though. Thanks for what you do and explaining your process.
Did you consider going for a model, that would support an external air supply? In such a cabin you could save a lot of wood if you go for a stove with an external air supply. Because now the oven pulls out the warm air out of your room while the fire is buring.
I mostly looked at smaller stoves that didn't have that option, my space is really small so we focused on something that would not intrude far into the room.
I remember my old Jotul 118 had a metric smoke outlet so I had to use an adapter to get it to fit an American 6 inch chimney pipe. It seemed like your double wall was having a hard time getting the crimped end fully seated into the smoke collar - I wonder if they are still making their smoke collars metric? Beautiful job on the hearth.
i would returned that stove and went to menards and got the 2 burner box wood stove. 200$. can cook on it with variety of cast irons. and a few people show how can get hot water from them also for your type situation. fits much bigger logs so can have those all night burns so can sleep nice and cozy. instead having a alarm to be up every 2 hours to put a log in.
@@50Acres yes they will cook ya out. they can put off lot of heat. but it was something i got use to and learned to control its air flow. but had a winter we was out of power for like 8 days and it saved us and the neighbors for cooking.
Stove looks really nice Mike, even with the flaws. I don't think they are that big of a deal, but I'd still let them know., Sounds like it was a rush job and they didn't let things dry or cure maybe? Did you think about installing a "Magic Heat" or some other kind of heat exchanger and maybe ever make some kind of wall grate for the bed room, I think it would be nice to get even more heat in there during the winter. Tile came out really nice too man!
Hey bud, thanks man, Yea I don't think it is all that big a deal either. It had some kind of paste under the paint. I might make a wall grate for the bedroom to help regulate heat in there.
Hi Jera, the main room is 14 by 20 feet, and the bedroom is 8 by 10 feet. The utility room is 6 by 14 feet. The sidewalls are 9 feet tall in the main room and 8 feet tall in the bedroom, the roof pitches are 12/12 and then 1/4 in the utility room.
Mike, I have the same stove in my house. It's a great stove keeps my down stairs rooms comfortable in winter. Good choice. Get some heat paint at Home Depot and touch up those spots it'll be fine. Good work as always, looking forward to see how well it heats your cabin.
I love it and the stove tile really looks nice I know they should have done better on the stove but I would just get me a spray can of heat resistant black spray paint touch it up move on or not if it did not bother me, looks good here nice cabin
Thank you I got it from the distributor that I bought the Marvin windows from. I have gone back there for several other projects so they gave me some nice gear.

I'll keep you guys posted! Thanks Mike and Happy Thanksgiving.
@@Aepek bla, bla, bla!
Hi Frank, I have heard and seen great things about VC, my in laws have one and it works great. Have fun in your "future cabin".
This dude is awesome. OMG the texture is unreal.
Thank you Al
Very interesting. Nice tile work and unique mantle memorabilia. Thanks for sharing👍♥️❗️
Thanks Barbara
I love the shots coming up the drive way/road lets you kinda feel what its like pulling up to such a beautiful place like that
Thanks RB, I try to do stuff like that for the reason you stated, glad you enjoyed it.
The black grout looks awesome.
Thank you!
Can’t wait for the next one!!!
Thanks Robert, can't wait to fire it up
Vinny 🇺🇸
Thanks Vinny, you are correct I was not able to get it in enough. I am going back to the drawing board next trip.
That stove is going to be great. When it’s been used a few times the missing paint won’t be noticeable. Good work
Thanks Carol, I agree, no big deal
I love Jotul fires. Pretty much the same design for decades and they last two lifetimes.
Just had the first fire in it on Tuesday and it is an incredible stove.
Been a while since I last saw you..were working on the shower. Looking nice. Like the fireplace.
Hi Kitty, welcome back, thank you.
Your cabin is really turning out nice👍🏻
Thanks Tim
Usually people just paint their wood stove with engine high heat paint. You could touch that up in a second. You can buy it at auto parts store or Walmat. Looks nice. You could spray some in the lid and dip a small model paint brush in it and touch it up easily. You will find out next year or after that you will be spraying the whole stove over again with engine paint.
Yea not a big deal, just wanted to be honest to any future purchasers.
I like the outside finishes on the cabin, the shingles over the boards and bat.
Thank you
It’s coming together nicely. No more noisy propane heater.
And just in time for...
Happy Thanksgiving 🦃 🦃🦃
Hope you had a great Thanksgiving Philipp
50 Acres & a Cabin sure did, working all day, lol.
Cold/cool is bad 125 deg. and 250 range is best to remove the build up of
the unburnt gasses, build up causes fires. Be safe and enjoy. Yes I cut my own trees down, used my splitter to
keep me supplied. Its hard work but saves lots of $$$ 😊
Nice sounds like the stove is working really well for you glad to hear it!
Looking forward to the first fire in the stove. Great channel. Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you Peter
Its a good thing you did not decide to buy enameled Yotul,we did and enamel started to lift off after one season of use.Nice stoves but poor finish, thats for sure !
Thats too bad to hear, we wanted the next size up with an enamel finish but just couldn't stomach the price. Guess I'm glad we got the one we did. As long as the stove works well I'll be happy.
It's really coming together. The stove looks great in the space.
Thanks Greg
Looks awesome! Great tips about clearances. Soon that thing will be cranking and heating up that whole cabin....just in time. Looking forward to see how you finish venting it and sealing it. Keep up the great work!
Thank you Anthony
Bummer about the missing paint .....I just hooked up our stove 2 weeks ago and it had some problems too ....broken fire bricks , and a dent in the back ....They gave us new fire bricks thou ....ha ! But it works great and winter is here so glad its all done and working now .....thanks for the video always good to see how everyone else out there is doing it .....
Thanks for watching enjoy your stove this winter, stay warm.
🤣🤣😆 I’ve never heard of the GAF meter. That’s awesome.
I line the look of those stoves. If I ever get a shop built I want small one that doesn’t have the window but the cool deer or whatever on the sides.
I like how it turned out.
11:18 that’s what she said😬
Sorry I couldn’t help myself.
Take care and we’ll see you on the next video.
You might like the F602 it is about the same size but doesn't have the glass and is shaped longer rather than wider. 11:18 lol, didn't even realize.
high heat stove black paint will cover that. It happens over time and use of stove anyway. We would clean our stove every year in summer and touch up pipe and stove as needed, protects from rust also, just FYI
Nice job on that stove, I like the black tiles and that mantle is oh my wow!
Thank you!
Thank you very nice of you to say. I hope you enjoy building your cabin as much as we have ours.
Great edit Mike. Stove is going to keep you warm on them chilly winter nights.
Thank you Jerry
Very nice to see your progress.... love your stove... just touch up with a heat resistance paint.... al good... looking for to next video 👍 happy thanksgiving 🦃
Thanks Marco! Happy Thanksgiving!
Can't wait to see your first fire, great vis as always.
Thanks Tracey
Love the stove. Great job on the tile work. Love your cabin.
Thanks Marsha
This is great, I'm really liking your choices with the tile and grout. That looks like a smaller version of my Napoleon woodstove. Newly subscribed, liking your projects
Thanks JB, glad you like it and thank you for subscribing.
A genuine wool carpet in front will snuff out sparks. It looks like a tight squeeze for a pot full of water and a few fry pans.
I bet that stove will heat the cabin great. Great job on the install and tile work. Al
Thanks Al!
I had a Jotul stove and it was to hot. We bought a new one with built in heat shields and its much better. They work real good.
Glad to hear it's working for you, this one has heat shields also
Stove polish - little container is a couple bucks at Tractor Supply Co. or at some Home Depots.
Thanks for that tip Scott, I'll give that a try it really is a beautiful stove. I'd still probably buy the same one.
You can touch up those areas of stove with some Rust-Oleum high heat grill paint. I believe it comes in black semi gloss and black matte. I have old stove that I touch up.
Thanks good call.
I hope you do the first burn on a warm sunny day because the smell is going to be horrendous. Just from experience. It does have very nice looking aesthetics and first nicely for that location. Best of luck.
Yea that is what people have been telling me, hopefully it's not too cold out.
I put down a 5x7 piece of Granite on a homeade landing of 1.5 inch ply and 2x4....i also put a wall underneath in basement. I hade 2x8 double floor joist on a 14 ft span... I put the wall 3 feet from blockwork
Nice work!!
Given the price of these stoves the dealer ought to be made aware. There has to be a 'fix' available to you. Great video as usual!!
Thank you Frederic
Hello, I had been following you for a while and I like your channel. You are building a beautiful cabin...but what moves me to write you is because I like the woodstove very much. It's beautiful...congratulations for your hard work...it will pay...BLESSINGS...
Thank your for watching and leaving a comment Deliz, glad you like the wood stove
Really nice stove. Things are looking good down there.
Hey neighbor, thank you!
Nice job on the hearth and stove. We have the Jotul F400 Castine in our home.
Nice Richard, the F400 was actually our first choice until we found out the price and we downsized to the F100.
Hey thanks I have seen those fans in other peoples videos, seems like a nice addition
Good job.
Thanks Sandra, I'll let you guys know if I try to fix it.
I love this stove, it ended up not being a big issue at all.
Bummer about the paint job not being spot on but then again Mike, the overall quality, performance and good name outweighs the headache, I totally agree. Btw, it is gorgeous. So can't wait to see the next video. Hope Y'all had a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Thank you Sojourner, hope you had a great Thanksgiving also!
Hope you had a great Thanksgiving!! Woodstove with the slate backdrop looks awesome. Great idea with the slats of wood to position stove and prevent scrap marks. Cant wait to see it lit up, should throw some great heat.
Thanks Charles, I can't wait to fire it up!
To clean the tiles I let it dry and use burlap. I find it easier.
Nice, ill give it a try
waiting to see the effect of it turned on, it's sad about the paint, but the stove is super pretty, nice pick!
Thanks Nuno
I can't wait to see the first fire!
me too!
your choice of oven was excellent! bar the makers stupid botches its perfect!
with regards to the chimney, could you not put the flue thru the side wall then make an upright bit? im no expert so thats probably a very bad idea!!
your harthblooks like you bought it like that in one piece! that was brilliant! you have done well, if only it was all done and you could look round and just think "i did this without much help! i deserve it!" 😊
cant wait to see the next vid!
Hey Thanks Geoff, I plan to run the chimney up through the roof because the bedroom roof would be in the way if I go out the sidewall.
50 Acres & a Cabin ahha! i see what you mean! (just re-watched the vid!) either way, good luck getting that done! 🍻
Enjoy your quiet method. Good video.✅
Thank you Georgette
Thank you, yea I really like this stove a lot, I think I can touch it up no problem.
Came for a stove review and got a lesson in setting tiles
If you look in the description I put a clickable index so that you can go to exactly the part you are interested in.
50 Acres & a Cabin I was not trying to be funny I was saying I got two things for the price of one
@@1029pb oh ok no problem, I had been getting comments of people upset about the tiling so I thought that might be the case, thank you.
Well it's 31 degrees up here in Everett, WA. Let's get that fire started... I'm freezing :-)
Stay warm Jeff!
Ha it's currently 34 degrees here at New London, WI. Well, that's what my thermostat outside temp section says. Might not be 100% accurate. lol
X
Great addition to the cabin Mike . how many square feet will the stove heat? Stay safe working on the roof .sincerly Tim
Thanks Tim, it is supposed to heat up to 1,000. My cabin is 450 sq ft so we should be pretty warm!
When we put new piping in and start the first fire, not only did it stink up the house but it burnt off the pipe finish. The finish on the stove won't stay the same either, but Debra C 's idea of sending a pic to the company is a good one. Why should you miss the heat and put out extra effort when they messed up.
Sounds like that first fire is going to be smelly. I'm going to call on Monday
I know it took many fires to bake the paint on our stove....then 10 yrs later we had some sassafras go off like a nuclear meltdown it was ripping uncontrolled drafting off the smallest spaces like a torch for 10 min....temp went up to 800...
That was last time i smelled that paint smell...lol
It did the trick
Oh no kidding. I’ve been using this pretty regularly and it’s been a while since I smelled anything
I was curious if you figured out a good way to quiet down the heater in your bedroom. My guess is that's a project for the future, but if you have already done something neat, it would be cool to see. Thanks for another great video!
Hi dper, I got some great tips from a couple viewers that I just need the time to give a try and work out a video
Looks good! I think a nice semi gloss sealer would look good.
Thanks!
Beautiful work!
Thank you Jillie
I really like the stove a lot, but I do notice I need to crack a window to get a good draft.
Beautiful stove. Nice choice. Paint doesn’t matter it going to get dirty. Just make sure the door seals And flew works. They should have caught that at the factory. Shame on the guys that signed off. Cheers 🍻
Thanks Turkey Man, no big deal on the paint, the stove is awesome.
I seem to recall that the first section of pipe should be a "stove adaptor". I'm not 100% certain but I suggest you consult the Selkirk site and check if carefully if you have not done so.
Also, it is very handy to have a telescoping section so that it can be disconnected for cleaning easily.
I'm thinking I am missing a part also, now trying to chase down the right part without much luck.
Thanks for the tip Robert
I think you may be right, I can only get it in about a half inch or so but it needs to go at least another inch to hit the gasket.
i would returned that stove and went to menards and got the 2 burner box wood stove. 200$. can cook on it with variety of cast irons. and a few people show how can get hot water from them also for your type situation. fits much bigger logs so can have those all night burns so can sleep nice and cozy. instead having a alarm to be up every 2 hours to put a log in.
My friend had one of the Menards stoves and it worked awesome, would cook you out of his cabin if you weren't careful.
Definitely a work in progress . nothing like a herd of deer on a early morning rise with those flames flickering
Thanks Frankie, every once and a while we are treated to some passing deer or wild turkeys. Makes for a special morning
I'm disappointed with the paint, and I was thinking of getting one but a little bigger, thanks for the video!!👍👍
It's a really nice stove aside from that. I'd still buy it.
I see your vidéo from belgium , in europe , great job
Hello Alain!
Hey there! What are the measurements of your cabin? Thanks!
Hi Thomas, glad to hear you like the stove, all in all I'm pretty pleased with it aside from that one issue.
I love it and the stove tile really looks nice I know they should have done better on the stove but I would just get me a spray can of heat resistant black spray paint touch it up move on or not if it did not bother me, looks good here nice cabin
Hey thank you Michael. It doesn't bother me all that much especially since it is hard to see when the door is closed.
GAF Meter - that made my day!
Love your Marvin hoodie! They must have seen your post with the shims on your storm doors... 😉
Thank you I got it from the distributor that I bought the Marvin windows from. I have gone back there for several other projects so they gave me some nice gear.
Looking good. I really love the design on it too. I would at least let them know what the paint job is like. Maybe they will send you paint or send you money!
Thank you Rebecca
Cute little solar array...go big or go home....Jotul? No so much..get on board. VT castings is my go to stove.... good luck and sorry for your pain.
The little Jotul can cook us out! In Laws have a VT castings, primary heat source for their 1600 sq ft house.
Excluding the paint, Beautiful stove.
It's really a nice stove, I'd buy it all over again.
