    Baldwin VII of Flanders was the son of Robert II of Flanders who had gone to the first crusade with Robert Curthose, so it makes sense he bouched for Clito rather than Henry as duke of Normandy. History is really fascinating when you join the dots like that!!

    Can you do the battle off Samar? I feel like it hasn’t gotten the attention it deserves.
    If you haven’t heard of the battle off Samar, it is basically the best example of a David vs Goliath battle where the American fleet of 7 destroyers successfully fended off the entire Japanese fleet of several battleships, cruisers, and destroyers. The battle was so one sided with such great heroics on the American side that if a movie were made today on it it would be dismissed as too unrealistic.

      You forgot the hundreds of aircraft the Americans had during Samar, while the Japanese had none, as well as the huge technological gap in fire control, damage control, recon and communications. Not to mention the Japanese were operating on a time constraint seeing how the main US fleet was on its way back. It was nowhere near a david vs goliath scenario.

    What a weird tactic to put your mounted vanguard in front of your tight knightwall, does anyone know why Henry used this tactic?

    • @Psychol-Snooper
      @Psychol-Snooper 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Maybe to test the French resolve. It might be the knights were spoiling for a fight. Some would refuse to dismount. One would think holding them in the wings would have been best, but it worked out.
      TL;DR I don't know but it's interesting.

I'd just to love to hear about all the context surrounding them!!

    Three battles that could be covered: the Standard, Lincoln & Wilton.

    I think the character of Robert Baratheon from GOT might have been inspired by King Louis VI.

    • @MadManchou
      @MadManchou 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Louis VI was the first great french king since Charlemagne. He was the first to bring the people on the side of the monarchy by brandishing the banner of Saint Denis, named Montjoie. He consecrated his kingdom to Saint Martin of Tours, first Patron of warriors. And he forced away the Teuton "Emperor" Otto without battle, frightening him with the fervour of the citizen militia.
      Oh and he's one of the earliest investors in "Gothic" architecture, a great patron of scholars and merchants.
      By all means, more than just a warrior king.

    • @sealy_99
      @sealy_99 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think GRRM said that Robert was based a bit on Edward IV of England and Henry VIII to a lesser extent, however there do appear to be a few overarching similarities here between Robert and Louis VI.
