I didn't expect to want one so bad....I sort of love the monolithic form factor. I like that closing bit a lot because that perspective is important too, these recreations have value beyond being identical to their sources, and evaluating them as they are is the right approach for most use cases.
I recently got one, and I wasn’t sure about how useful a monosynth would be for me, but I have been loving it. It’s proven quite fun to manipulate during improv jams with my band.
The absolute joy of the 2600, in all it’s forms, is that it always feels like an exploration. No matter how long you’ve been playing with synths, which for me is 30 years, the complex interplay of the modules as you start to go deeper is always surprising, often confusing, but constantly interesting. The ability to run the filter output alongside the VCA output into the mixer is one thing that seems simple, but can add so much complexity to your sounds. Oh, and the S&H / Switch module is not labelled correctly on this unit. They labelled it right on the last revision in the 70s, but then changed back on all the new versions.
@@Bananskuden Exactly. I had the good fortune to side-by-side compare an original Minimoog from the mid 70's to the new(ish) Minimoog reissue. Playing the original sounded exactly like on the Kraftwerk records. I mean, note for note. It was amazing. Even though I've read stories how Moog went to incredible length to source exact components for the reissue, and (at least partly) did through-hole wiring internally, it just didn't quite get there. I mean, it sounded very nice, but in my opnion had the same, clean, somewhat hi-fi sound, that the Prophet 6, Prophet 5/10 also has. I think it has to do with the components in the old synths. They are just a bit more "unreliable", they drift more, and consequently there's a bit more internal distortion. I wish Dave Smith had simulated that in the new P5/10 synths. I own a P5 rev 4 myself, and though it sounds real nice, it doesn't get all the way to vintage P5 territory in my opinion.
