    Actually, the Philco Transitione 5 is the radio--the tuner and power controls are mounted on the side of the steering wheel while the chassis with the vibator/tubes/speakers would be elsewhere. The gauge in the middle is the station indicator and the two knobs are power/volume and tuning. It was common to have a key switch on them. Drivers only actually locked the car doors in extreme cases, usually because of the inconvenience of locking the door then scooting over to the passenger side as well as having to lock it with the key. Thus there were lockable compartments in which you put valuables while leaving the rest of the car open (glove box locks are a carryover from those days, but notice the lockable compartment to the left of the steering wheel in the Chrysler shown here). Radios were a rarity in homes and kids who wanted to listen to a radio often stood outside of strangers cars and turned on the radios to listen to them while the strangers were away. An owner would often return to his car to find the radio switched on and the battery drained. The radios themselves were not wired into the car's ignition system because without proper filtering the coil would cause interference while driving. Thus car radio manufacturers would often put a key lock on the radio switch itself in order to prevent unauthorized use. By the '40's, technology allowed filters such that the radio power could be wired into the ignition switch in order to prevent unauthorized use of the radio.

    The device on the dashboard that requires a key and has a speedometer like setting is in fact a speed limiter. The owner of the car, who was presumably in the backseat being chauffeured around, could set a speed limit that his driver would not be able to exceed. Quite popular on limousines of the time.

    That little metal box on the right of the steering column is a Philco radio. Pretty inconvenient to have the key sticking out of the center, but the 30s were an era of experiment.
    The woodwork built into the division was called the console... Of course they usually contained vanities, a liquor cabinet, sometimes a safe, jewelry box, etc... Whatever the owner specified.
    The crank hole in the grill, by the Thirties at least, wasn't meant to start the car with... It was meant for a Mechanic to be able to rotate the engine to TDC during maintenance. (Actually pretty convenient)...
    The real weird thing about those old luxury cars was the small driver's compartment... Not only were people generally tinier at the time, but the weird thing was that the Wealthy would hire smaller men as Chauffeurs... for nothing other than to make the cars look LARGER.
    Apparently that trend started in Paris back in the horse drawn coach days... The Elite would employ men of smaller stature as Drivers and Footmen to make the horse and the vehicle look more impressive.
    I've read things similar to my description in several history books, and having seen so many "period" pictures, it looks like this was the case.

      This car was one of those bitter sweet things. I wanted to do one of these since I saw one at the Gilmore Auto Museum a couple months back. But come to find out they are pretty rare car it doesn’t matter the body style

    Outstanding for an unrestored (I'm guessing) car from the 30's, from the wood in the interior to the bodywork. WYR: 1. Packard 2. Pierce Arrow

      I’m not sure if this car was ever restored.. I can’t get over how popular it was inside it makes me want to do some really really high-end Packards definitely what was the most godly automobile made in the 30s for a high profile person
      There was a 1937 Packard just to the right of that car that I also videoed it’s an invalid car but not only that had a V12 in it it was the only car I’ve ever seen with a built-in wheelchair it’s insane that one’s coming as well I’ll give you the rundown of the cars that I shot there this go around I’m gonna go back once a month.. they have some comparison videos I want to do as well

    Love it, love it, LOVE IT!
    Being that the device on the right side of the steering column has the Philco brand name on it and Transitone beneath that, it is obviously a radio. Kinda like how the radio controls are on the steering wheel now. The radio chassis and speaker were usually remotely mounted. Turn is on and listen for the hum of the vibrator and you will find the radio chassis. One of the knobs is for volume and the other is for tuning. The numbers showing are in line with AM radio frequencies. Although the car is probably capable of going over 65 mph, the roads and the tires back then weren't usually good enough to drive that fast. The keyhole on it is probably for the ignition,making it more convenient for the driver. Only the best for Imperial!
    Back when I took the only automotive class in college, there was this vintage of Imperial in the shop. It belonged to one of the instructors friends. The Imperial itself was a dual cowl(a second windshield for the rear seat passengers) convertible touring car. It also might have been a bright color like this car. The car was huge, as many of the senior cars were back then. The car blew me away!
    Needless to say, I took the class for an easy "A" for the gpa. I already knew more than they were willing to teach in that class, so I read about and looked at more advanced things.

      Glad you dig this episode yeah I can totally see it now it did look like a radio but I thought it was weird the radio was by the show for if it was that Classic Car I would think the radio would be in the back with Walter Chrysler.. it was super interesting nonetheless.

      @@What.its.like. Maybe the speaker was in the back? Next time you are there maybe look around for speakers. The speaker might just be attached to the radio chassis under the dash? Probably operating the radio was just another of the chauffer's tasks? Back then, if you were wealthy and had a service staff, they would do everything for the them, everything.
      Off the subject, but did you ever see the 3 Stooges short where they were servicemen and driving a panel truck? Their radio was an acoustic phonograph mounted under the hood. They had to stop to change records.

    All 1932, 1933, and 1934 Chrysler cars, which includes Chrysler, Chrysler Imperial, DeSoto, Dodge, and Plymouth does have front suicide doors as well as the rear doors. By 1935, all front doors are hinged at the front for safety reason. Chrysler Imperial remains up to 1954, and by 1955, Imperial was the separate make without the Chrysler nameplate on it.

    The "doohicky" is the control head for a PHILCO TRANSITONE In car radio. The keyhole is so that it can be locked to prevent unauthorized use by a passer by or even the chauffeur.
    Did you notice that the rear door also has a lock? Again, to prevent unauthorized use of the rear compartment by the chauffeur!

    .....thanks for the vid.....investigated and found that device on the dashboard is the control head of a Philco Transitone Model 10 AM radio introduced 1933.....can't find any info mentioning it was also a speed limiter.....the numbers on the control head correspond to AM radio bandwidth range of 540 to 1700 kHz ( x .1 to limit length of numbers on dial).....I'd take the Lincoln KB and the fabulous Franklin V12 which was OHV, air-cooled, and supercharged.

    Ok Jay!: Now I am jealous! You get to sit in a Cord, a Caddy V-16, a Packard Darrin, and NOW Old Man Chrysler's Chrysler!! What a GREAT car! I bet it was REALLY cushy! The color was NICE, too!
    Those were the days when Chrysler was a MAJOR auto maker! And just think, shortly later, they would come out with the Airflow!! It could be that YEARS before I saw that car at the HF. Sad that it's been so long I can't remember! WYR#1. . . Hmmmmm. . .going Packard here. #2. . . WOW I don't know! Pierce AND Franklin are NICE! Ok, I'm picking them BOTH!!

      Haha yeah it was an absolute honor doing this car I can’t wait to see what’s next there’s lots of cool stuff coming from that museum that museum isn’t big but the quality of car that’s there is second to none you won’t see some of that stuff anywhere else but maybe they Gilmore.. They have another Cadillac V 16 second GEN car I want to compare it to the first GEN the newer one has a flat head V 16 which is crazy and it’s totally weird

    I like all the pre-war Chrysler's. They were the leading edge in technology and engineering. The interior of this automobile is one of the finest I have ever seen. The wood and burl work is remarkable indeed. Old Walter didn't want to be second to anybody. nice job with the video.
    The switch allows you to set the maximum speed, it's a regulator so your man doesn't take it racing.

    I think my comment keeps getting deleted by YT because I put a link in it. The doohickey in the driver’s compartment is for the radio.     I think that panel behind the side mount is an access panel for servicing something on the car Rather than access to a storage area. It looks like it takes two screws to remove that little cover so that would not make for very handy access to a storage area.
    In fact the one that's mounted in the front fender on the outside could actually be an access panel for servicing something as well. Or possibly storage for the jack.
    Overall a pretty nice looking car and definitely has some opulence. That said, I believe both the Packard and Pierce Arrow offered a more luxurious experience.

      Yeah I think you’re right about the storage thing on the other side maybe that’s where the battery located I don’t remember if the battery was under the hood.. but that car was all about keys everything was under lock and key everywhere you look there was a keyhole for something.

    What a beautiful car. One fit for a princess. The fender mounted mirrors look like you need a telescope to see them.
    I really like the look of the Lincoln though I wouldn't have a clue how nice it is,
    Same with the Pierce Arrow. I'm seeing these cars for the first time and have no idea what they are like, I just picked the prettiest. You know what would be really cool? To make a video showing all the cars in the museum like you've done at museum in I think Michigan. Thanks Jay, excellent presentation and keep on rolling!!!

      No I forgot to I had so many technical issues yesterday that part of the video was supposed to get cut out I did this video four times yesterday the first time I was one slide away from being done and it just disappeared the system kept crashing out on me next time I’m there I’m going to try to go there at least once a month I’ll do a short video of how the mirror looks from the driver seat

      One day would love to compare this to a Duesenberg In dual cowl phaeton they look very similar. I should’ve did the comparison on the cord though the cord L 29 looks very similar to this car

    Like the V16 Cadillacs, this was a very expensive car during the height of the depression. Gorgeous automobile and I'm sure all the wood is real. I think this is before the time of plastic wood, plus it is a very high end car. I don't think I could make a choice at the end of the video without hours and hours of comparison.

      Hard choices, but I'll choose the Lincoln and the Pierce Arrow.
      This is a great car, especially that back seat. This is a car I would like to be chauffeured around in, with all those amenities. But I wonder why they designed those sun visors that way? They're in your face.

    The CL was amazing - a true rival to the greats of the time, even if it did not go multi-cylinder. The got 125hp out of it in (for the class) relatively light car. The Lincoln KA only V-12 had only 120 when introduced. And the styling (cribbed from Cord perhaps) was stunning. Very modern, see how there's no real cowl? Alas, by 1934 it was all gone and the Imperial was an Airflow priced down with the Buick Century (except for the rare Custom (later Crown) Imperials, but they were really just huge limos). Still nice, but not luxury. Not until 49 when a few Derham owner-driver Imperials reappeared, did Imperial begin the long, and ultimately unseccessful (RIP 1975) attemp at another Cadillac competitor. Pinstriping in the day was 'coach lines' - as in look at old deluxe carriage - they all had it. The doohicky of course is a radio - locked because kids would get into the car and listen, running down your battery. Luck guy to have poked around this. WYR: !0 KB, 2) Imp

    That crank hole in the lower radiator was for adjusting the valves once you'd taken the spark plugs out, if you could crank that motor by hand you were a 600 pound gorilla. Good video thanks,

      I was thinking it was for something other than the actual crank to start it considering the electric starters been around for a while by 1933 and this would be really hard to crank over, I would think Thank you so much for that information I really appreciate it =)

      On the device by the steering wheel with Philco on it it looks like a AM radio control, unless it is a speed warning buzzer. Never seen this before, have to read through my Chrysler history book and see if this is mentioned.

    The history of Philco auto radios can be traced back to the Automobile Radio Corporation, which was formed in 1927 by C. Russell Feldman to produce Transitone radios for installation in automobiles. .... Not me. I just goggled it. In short it is a radio. Locking for what reason I do not know.

    Packard, Chrysler. You never got back to the fender-mounted mirrors, which, from your driver's POV, look to be just this side of useless. I love the very Art Deco hood ornament.

      The owner was Chrysler president Walter P Chrysler personal car.. and I got to review it. I can’t even begin to tell you what standing in that main room. With all those epic 1930s cars. Ferrari Lamborghini Maserati... definitely not Maserati. God if you look at that car the wrong way it will give you all kinds of problems.
      We had one at the dealership and if you didn’t drive it within a day or two the battery would be dead. And then you had to get in the trunk where the battery box, it was sort of a procedure. Anyway get the car started with the key.. and the car thinks your stealing it so it puts on the E brake and there a special sequence or some thing that Has to be done to get it out of that.
      Anyway Ferrari Lamborghini Maserati they don’t do anything for me. Nothing but this and the darrin and the cord 812 cough cough we’re just wow, and sort of made me sad because those days are gone and there not coming back.

      They call it a Cord Replica car to avoid emissions and today's safety requirements for new car manufacturing 🤔😉..

      I have to say I’m not a huge Chrysler fan either but if I got the opportunity to buy one of these and I had the money I totally would go for it they have a fantastic presence I was going to compare it to accord they looked very similar

      Eh this channel is mostly about the history of the cars, I worked at a classic car dealer last year and found you can have two cars that are the same in every way and they drive totally different
      Plus sometimes when you drive the cars things happen like run out of gas on a super hot and humid day.. and then what was supposed to be 20 minute thing turns into an all day thing and a lot die from a heat stroke when Trying to kick start it... that just happened two days ago lol

      I try to run this channel different than everybody else runs theirs, I try to run this as a car community and I’m part of that community too, I always try to answer as many people as I possibly can because I wanna show you guys I’m a real person too =)
      It’s a long story maybe I’ll share it one day I’m thinking about doing a behind-the-scenes take there’s been a lot of questions in the comment section that I want to answer as to how I do the videos and stuff behind the scenes..
      A lot of cars that I do are for sale and it’s weird I go to a different Classic Car dealerships I’d like to go to Classic auto mall because they have 875 cars for sale at any given time and do 30 cars and then just do an episode when I feel.. classic auto mall is 5 hours down the road. But I’ll see about starting the cars maybe but you won’t see that for probably another month I got about 15 cars maybe 20 in the pipeline

    Lockeed sent sample hydraulic brakes to chysler engineer zeder who reported to Walter p they're no good. Chrysler ask if his guys could make them good. When reworked zeder ask what to do with them. In a philanthropic moment that cost him billions chrysler said send them back to lockeed corrected, the whole world needs safe brakes.

    Quite cramped & small interior than what i always imagined.
    Also the body bead alonf the back was sloppy looking for such an expensive ride.
    But the car was visually beautiful.
    Fix the stained top, stat!
