I wonder how many times I said "HDMI Display Info" instead of "HDMI Info. Display"? 🤔😜

you can only disable internal recording on the a7iii if you are NOT in manual exposure mode. both my dial 1 & 2 are manual exposure. So basically I can't shut off internal record?

By subscribing to my channel) im going to release very nice tutorials and also ill be showing how to use your phone as an external monitor so you'll not have to spend extra money buying a monitor( working for me in sony a6300)

Hey man! This is one of the best videos about camera stuff. You've talked about the HDMI info display issue in 4K video mode on Sony cameras and explained that in detail like no one else did. I'm dealing with this issue every single day on my Sony A7 III and external monitor. For me, it's a major issue and I hate Sony for that although I love the A7 III. I constantly need to check both internal and external monitors for the correct exposure etc. When I'm in front of camera, I started using my intuition... I don't always have time to switch to 1080p mode to get my exposure right in run and gun situations. For some people, it may not be a big issue but once you try Panasonic GH5 (I have the GH5s rig too), you understand Sony's issue. By the way, you forgot to mention that there is a significant lag on an external monitor when you start changing camera modes (e.g. photo to video mode) on Sony cameras. There is no such lag on Panasonic which has like 100 better HDMI output.

    • @geraldundone
      @geraldundone  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks, mate! I totally relate to everything you said obviously. From a general usability factor, it's hard moving away from Panasonic. They get so much right when it comes to the interface and options.
Also, good point about the mode lag. I forgot all about that.
Thanks for the comment and kind words. Cheers! 😃👍

I just upgraded from a Sony A6000 to the A6600. I was really disturbed to find out that the menu is not displayed on the Atomos Shinobi when recording in 4k. I kind of assumed I was not understanding something. I'm glad it's not just me.
Other than clarifying that, this video was really helpful in understanding how the HDMI Info Display feature works. I feel like I could never get the A6000 to display to both the external and camera monitors at the same time, and thus had turned on HDMI Info Display on that setup. But then it bugged me when I wanted a truly clean display. For most of my shooting it's optimum (IMO) to have the menu on the camera's display, and a clean external monitor, so I'm glad I could make that work with my A6600! I was going to be really disappointed otherwise.
    Thanks!

    Great video!
I understand that these tests have been made with Sony A7 III and that A7R III will be pretty much the same. The last BIONZ-X-generation A7R IV + A9 II + ZV1, however, will still go black on 4k30p/25p while sending HDMI to the monitor and internal recording, but they will show full image both on display and monitor for 4k24p, so that's a good workaround (in Europe, you will have to switch to NTSC mode to have 24p available).
The same goes for the other limitation eye-/face-AF in 4k-video with internal recording and HDMI monitoring: with A7R IV + A9 II, 4k30p/25p makes eye-AF stop as with A7 III, but 4k24p will keep it working! Unfortunately, other obstacles like 120p, PC-remote, smartphone-control and proxy recording will still kill face/eye-AF even with 4k24p and internal recording.
As a side note, BIONZ-XR-generation-models (A7S III and later) don't have that problem anymore because of their higher processor capacity.

one thing to add- and this appears to be consistent on all sony 4K camera - tested a6400 and a7iii. When shooting 4K and using internal memory card recording if you have proxy recording enabled- the camera monitor will display the image and the details- but the external monitor will turn off totally. You have to disable proxy recording to get the results you were showing above where the external monitor shows the image and the camera screen just shows the details but no image. if you ever do a v2 version of this video- please add that- I almost ditched sony entirely b/c of this. first thing I do on cameras is turn on proxy recording as I have a weak computer- so I coudnt get 4K to work at all on my external monitor and I was super frustrated= then disabled proxy recording and boom- worked like the video you posted.

Hey, Gerald! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with the community.
I recently discovered another thing about my Sony A7III with my external monitor.
I was facing a problem when trying to hit Record (in 4k) using the monitor MA5 (feelword) in my camera... The external monitor screen went black but the camera showed Recording...
I ended up in your video trying to find a solution for that with no success.
Then diving into my menu system on camera I realized that my Proxy Recording was ENABLED. As soon as I switched it OFF everything worked just fine... I believe that recording on proxy on 4k mode (XAVCHD) demands more power and the camera can't handle that which is frustrating.
    Anyways, thanks for everything man!

I am glad I watched this Gerald. My situation was that I was using a gimbal in the brightest sunny day - I had an external monitor hooked up with a sunshade and lots of brightness - so I was okay for focus and framing. But I couldn't even see the display on the camera at all - to make it worse the a6300 dims in 4k when you hit record. Even to see if the camera is in record mode was difficult. Hey Gerald - I've been telling people on my channel (and so have dozens of others) that Sony blocks face detection (turns it off) when recording to an eternal monitor or if you use WIFI. This was quite interesting. Can you do a video like this one and stand in front of the camera and show the white box face detection box doing it's thing while you actually record in 4K on the A73 and use your second angle camera to record the screen doing it?
It is a monumental feature to be turned off, it is monumental agenda for 100's of channels to be saying "no it can't be done" (me included lol) and then you are showing it indeed can be done! I am planning on moving to the Nikon from the A73 because of this very thing! Oh, and thanks for doing such a well done video, I will mention you on my channel :) Big thumbs up dude :)

Great video. I have the exact same setup. I recently rented two additional bodies to have a three camera shoot with the exact same set up.. I noticed overheating occurs about an hour into recording. What I neglected to do and will do next time is to slightly move the camera monitor away from the body to allow for a bit more venting or heating disbursement... Hopefully that gives me another 20 minutes or so. It's incredibly difficult to do a 2-hour interview with this setup... at any moment one of the cameras would shut off and it would be incredibly distracting so I definitely need another technical person in the room so I can conduct the interview without having to worry about the cameras.

So I think you'll be okay. I think the bulk of the load on the camera is when it needs to compress in real time and write to an internal SD card... But with the ninja it doesn't need to do that buy HDMI. I also have the hypothesis that the Sony a73 has the capability of 60fps at 4 k buy HDMI but not internal... I did all the settings you showed on your video, but when I press the record button on the sony A7iii, it does not record automatically on the NINJA V like it does on your video. I tried everything, checked all the settings, and could only think to ask, do I need to have an SD card in the SLOT 1 of the Camera in order for the "4K output, REC Control, and TC output" to function? I'm so lost please help

I am curious about this magenta tint of yours (I mentioned it somewhere in the comments already). But it would be interesting to many to have an explanation on your combination of lighting, white balance, picture profile, colour correction... The whole process. Maybe a story behind your choice of this particular setup or any personal secret techniques. It's always nice when creators share the experience.

The Canon EOS R has a really strange problem when recording with hdmi. It works flawlessly in 4K but as soon as you decide you want to record in 1080p, the camera defaults to 59.94p output. It will still be recording in 24 or 30p, but over hdmi it up converts it to 59.94p. The problem is you cannot change it to an interlace signal to them apply a pull down and get the correct frame rate. It is literally taking your 1080p 23.98 and adding extra frames which no editing software I am aware of can detect and remove. So if you make the mistake of recording in 1080p over hdmi you’ll have footage that is very very screwy to your computer. It won’t know which frames to get rid of because the footage was shot at 24p, then you converted to 60p and no way to apply a pull down because the camera only outputs progressive. I’ve talked to Atomos, Canon, Apple (final cut), and Blackmagic (Davinci resolve). Nobody has an answer for how to deal with footage shot this way

It does work, yes, but only when you use 4K HDMI Output exclusively, i.e. disabling internal recording. And you won't see the box on the monitor, only on the camera's LCD. It's far from perfect, but it works.

  • @dairenn

Fascinating. Informative. I just ordered an external HDMI display for my a7iii as I am working solo and want to get my shot setup before the talent arrives and unlike my Canon EOS 850D, which has a fully reversible LCD display, the +200% pricier Sony a7iii does not.
But I think I would have lost my mind if I didn't understand how come I had no video signal on the external display when recording 4K internally.
Knowing I need to have the HDMI info OFF (and another forum suggests not having Proxy recording enabled either; which I've already disabled due to not needing it) feels like it saved me at least a couple of heartattacks.
Not that I wouldn't have been able to get by filming with out it, except I just spent a bunch of money on the external monitor and thinking it was useless or due to some weird HDMI cable issue when it isn't would have given me even more gray hair.
Using an external recorder makes a lot of sense with these photography cameras that also happen to be able to shoot video as well, and I wish I had have thought of that as I was looking into external displays. It seems like something that not only helps with potential cooling issues and software limiting single video files to 29 min. 59 sec. is also longer battery life. I think for now I may not need (for example, I'm using a fully manual cine lens where you wouldn't be using AF/face detection anyway). But, it could be nice not to lose display on the camera while also using an external display among other problems discussed in the video, and so knowing an external recorder can solve for these issues is amazing to know.
    Thanks for putting this together.

So it turns out that the A7 IV has some weird quirks, too and this video came up when I did a search. For instance, that screen turing off issue persists (I know you mentioned it in your A7 IV review), but one that surprised me is that HDMI Info display now works as expected in 4k - but in video mode only. If you're in photo mode, you have to be outputting 1080p it seems. Is this something you noticed in your testing, too?

Thanks for great video, Gerald. You are truly awesome. It is very hard to find the reviewer who addressing issues happens in the real production scenario. I appreciate your knowledge sharing for the filmmaker community.
I am using a6500 and Moza Air 2 combination. Things get more complicated if you want a HDMI output with gimbal. Moza Air requires "PC Remote" usb connection mode to get camera control. (I think this is same to other manufactures' gimbal) With that mode a6500 doesn't produce HDMI output while recording. Both back LCD and external monitor black out except camera setting information on LCD. This is fatal flaw for gimbal user. I guess this may not happen if recording externally but couldn't find anybody tried on TH-cam. I appreciate if you could try this setting someday.

Thanks a lot for unintentionally helping me!
You mentioned that you can solve a lot of problems with deactivating internal recording. I have not been aware of this option and what it does (and still don't fully understand it). However: I have been trying for a long time now to capture 1080p 60 frames instead of 4k. But no matter what HDMI resolution I set, or what I specify in the software, it didnt work. And by now you already guessed why. Yeah...I had internal recording deactivated, probably because of some other guide. And deactivating internal recording FORCES hdmi to 4k, as long as the capture device is able to do 4k. So if I used a 1080p capture card I would have had no issues. But with a card which can both, deactivating internal recording always overwrites your HDMI settings and outputs as 4k. By enabling this now I have been able to solve this issue.
So thanks for your unintentional help! ^^

Great video, GU. I like getting into the nitty gritty of tech.
Another annoyance/gotcha I discovered recently is a delay in switching video formats/modes on the GH5 when it is connected to a Shogun Inferno. Normally, switching modes on a stand-alone GH5 happens almost instantaneously. When connected to the Inferno however, you have to wait a couple or seconds or so between each mode when making your way from one mode to the next. This can easily set you back 20-30 seconds if you need to change modes. Easy remedy: unplug the HDMI cable before you start switching modes on the GH5.

Thanks for the tip! I didn't know about the face detection work around until I came across your video.
What I'd like to do is switch between shooting modes with the custom memory settings. You can switch between presets with the wheel at the top of the camera. However, I've noticed when you set the camera to "4k output select: hdmi only" you can't use the preset modes to go to 1080 60 fps. When an hdmi cable is plugged in the camera will automatically go back to 4k 24p no matter what the custom wheel is set to.
