Thank you to all 6 oboists for wonderful interpretations of Espirar. Thank you to all who studied and prepared it. Congratulations to all for undertaking the challenge of preparing for this competition!!! All Best and Goodness to you wonderful Oboists! Cathy Milliken
Wow - if only they would all switch to the American-style reed making - the shrill upper register would darken and become a lot less reedy and wobbly. I understand why they like the European style reeds - they are far less demanding on the embouchure and mouth muscles. But these reed styles do not produce great tonality - especially in the upper register of the instrument.
@@giuseppenalinoboe Blah, blah, blah. All you have to do is listen to the difference in tonality. If you like the sound of an 18th century oboe, with excessive flabby reed vibrato, nasal tonality, and off-pitch chromatics, then perhaps an original instrument ensemble is a better choice for that type of experience. I have no interest in debating this privately with you - both schools have their following, neither is right or wrong, it's a matter of personal preference. As an oboist of over 50 years, I know which I prefer, which is more demanding of the performer, and requires a higher standard of discipline to master.
@@wkleung11 Not surprising - European judges are conditioned to prefer the wobbly and nasal tone quality produced by the European style reeds. Same reason you don't find oboists who use European style reeds as principals in any major American symphony.

You are the one being ridiculous.
There were actually American competitors playing on American reeds in this year’s competition. They just didn’t make it to the first round.
