If you buy the huge Marines surplus marpat backpack you can easily haul everything plus supplies and a shelter for summit on the air. They used to be under $100. I used to haul an entire small desktop in it when traveling with clothes.

LOL...Thanks for the info. I used to have an Alice Pack Large with the frame that you could damn near park a car in, but this came with the antenna setup and it is good. However I have since found that I am not as fond of the antenna as I was when I bought it way back when. Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!

Glad it was helpful! Also consider, if you can set it up where you are, the DX Commander. Once you build it and tune it, it is a resonant antenna with multiple bands. He has a permanent one for your yard (The Classic) and a portable one (The Expedition) both are EXCELLENT antennas and do NOT require a tuner for their use. Thanks for the comment and good luck on your ham radio adventure! 73!

Thank you for the comment. In the pack, you have two wires. One long one which is the antenna wire and then the short one for the counterpoise. According to the instructions, that wire attaches to the side of the spike. I am still playing with it right now. Have an awesome day! 73!

Great video to show the unboxing and setup of this antenna! Chameleon makes some very high quality products...I love their 17ft telescoping antenna. The machining on that matching unit is a work of art. I would never buy an MPAS for several reasons, but that's another story lol.

      @HR4NT  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hey I am glad you liked the video! I agree that their quality standards are top notch. I'll have to check out that 17 footer you spoke of. Thank you for watching and for your support! 73!

I'd be curious as to why you'd "never buy a MPAS"
I've made thousands of contacts with mine. I carry 4 different antennas with me when I do POTA and the MPAS is my number one go-to.

    • @daveN2MXX
      @daveN2MXX 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@bravo1xray522 The MPAS system does work....but not as well as other resonant systems. I would love to believe that a single matching solution would provide a near-perfect match over such a wide frequency range...but it works at the cost of efficiency. With a 17ft element, the performance is ok at 20M (with multiple radials), and about 12dB (2 S units) worse at 40M. There are many sources for this info, because the MPAS design is identical to the Comet wideband HF antenna. I have also noticed that most youtubers who once would feature this antenna in every video have moved on to other antennas. If it works for your application, then that is great. I run lower power SSB when I activate for POTA, and the MPAS is submotimal for that use case.

@@daveN2MXX Thank you for your input. I have 2 dipoles, a end fed, The Super Antenna and my MPAS in my truck at all times. I reach for the MPAS almost every time. The ease of set up and track record just out ways the others. Most parks don't want you using the trees for anything and they don't even blink at the verticals. True I've worked more stations at further distance with my 7 band dipole but it's a total PITA to put up and take down.

    • @daveN2MXX
      @daveN2MXX 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@bravo1xray522 Sounds like it works really well for you. What bands do you usually work using the MPAS? I typically use a homebrew 40M end fed halfwave and a sotabeams pole, because I agree with you about not throwing stuff up into the trees in a park. I also typically use 20W, so I am trying to maximize my antenna (within reason)....so I use the EFHW or a base loaded vertical (with the chameleon 17ft whip).

Correct me if I am wrong, but you strike me as a 1911 kind of guy.
Am I way off base, close or spot on?
Something tells me that you are a gentleman who loves and exercises their Second Amendment Right. Probably what drew me towards your channel in the first place.
Nonetheless, I am loving the videos and enjoy watching the channel evolve. Always a pleasure to be among the first subscribers of a new content creator. You have a promising future ahead of you on TH-cam.
*Forgot to mention that I absolutely dig how clean your shack area appears. I managed to snag an Icom IC-7300 on Friday from the Plano, TX HRO location. I wanted the 991A but saw the opportunity and squeezed the trigger. This has forced me to address my plan of attack a lot earlier than I had anticipated. Don't get me wrong my friend. I am not complaining and I gladly welcome the challenge(s) ahead of me.
So now I finally have my first _official_ radio (I do not count the FT-60R). The goal is to adhere to the KISS method while also sticking to the principle of 'buy once - cry once'.
Lately I have been browsing an endless amount of shack photos for ideas and they are either:
    A) *_WAY_* too cluttered with extra parts, gear and general household garbage (for lack of a better word).
    B) They look like a museum for ancient radio equipment.
    or
    C) They are the minimalist (IE - Clean) looking shacks with only the essentials. All cordage is neatly tucked away and organized with only a few pieces of kit on the table. There are not a plethora of monitors, clocks, maps, desk lights, tools and so forth.
This is my goal. I am not looking to build a "shack" or even a "super shack" so to speak. We merely want a small station in the corner of the loft that we can play with whenever the mood strikes us. Even my wife is slowly getting into the vibe. While HAM radio is not our primary interest (although it is quickly rising). It is, however, a crucial part of the entire equation.
    Stay classy my friend.
    EDITED for forgetfulness.

Actually I used to have a nice custom 1911, but since traded for an HK45. I have always liked the HK line of items and the quality and reliability has been a good match for my usage. I tend to be rough with things and the 1911 was way too nice for me to carry. Thank you so much for the compliments on my channel. I try to come up with good content for my viewers even if I may not be a total expert in the subject matter. I am still learning and will continue to do so as time progresses.
Congrats on getting your 7300! It is a solid radio and will serve you for a long time! I try to keep my area clean, but it does get cluttered with all the gear I have been making and purchasing as of late.
As for building out your shack, I would suggest just getting what you need. The hobby will tell you down the road if you need more stuff. I am in no way interested in having a museum of old radios just to take up space...makes cleaning a major pain! When I got into Ham radio, I also had no intention of being where I am now. I simply wanted a license and gear for emergency / survival purposes....then I started watching more videos and getting interested in other aspects of the hobby and the vortex opened up and swallowed my bank account! LOL Hey, that you for watching my videos. I am glad that you are enjoying them! I will keep pumping out more as time goes on. Thank you for your support and keep in touch! 73!

It has it's pro's and con's. The pros are it is portable and many ways to set it up in various configurations and it works. The cons are that it requires a tuner. If you watch my other videos after this as I progressed in my ham journey, I discovered that I don't like carrying around a tuner to play radio, so I moved to resonant antennas. My absolute favorite for portable is the DX Commander Expedition. It is such a great antenna and takes about 10-15 minutes to set it up and works flawlessly!! If you want something that fits in your pocket, check out my video on the Spark Plug Antennas. Again, no tuner needed after you tune it one time for wire length. If I had known then what I know now, I would have saved the $575 and put it into other antennas. Not saying that the MPAS 2.0 is bad or crap, it just wasn't for me. Thank you for watching and for the comment. I hope I answered your query. 73!

according to another youtuber the folding antenna is made of brass. But you say it’s light. Perhaps the ferrules?
HOA question, can they do anything about temporary antennas you take down when you finished? Might depend on the HOA, seems they can vote in rules.

It seems to be aluminum to me, I could be wrong. I honestly have not used that antenna for a few years now since I discovered other antennas that work just as well with no where near that price tag. It was one of my first antenna purchases when I first got into ham radio and I have since found much better ones. This one is cool, but quite overpriced. As for HOA's, first I hate them all! Second, if you are operating your radio and have an antenna up and take it down shortly after you finish, I don't think the HOA should have any issue with it. The populace has given HOA's too much power to the point where your PRIVATE PROPERTY no longer means anything. Someday the people will wake up and end that insanity. Another great video! I have the 1.0 version of this antenna with thousands of contacts with it. I have a few tips for you on the set up. First ditch the 25' counterpoise. It works "good" on all the bands but that's about it. Cut yourself 4 of each 20 and 40m and put 2 of each in a ring terminal so you'll have four total ring terminals. Take those and put them over the threaded portion of your mini and then thread the mini and the ring terminals onto the spike. The spread the counterpoises out. I like to run the 20m north, south, east, west and run the 40m NW, SE, NE and SW. You will work the world this way!! Also if you find yourself in a dry area pound the spike into the ground pull it out and fill the hole it leaves with water a few times. Crazy, but it works!! I have never used the MPAS in any other configuration as they were never needed!! You'll love the MPAS for POTA!!

This design of antenna. A broadband, non resonate antenna, with a 5 to 1 "Transformer" will run approx. 12db or two "S" units down it transmit power compared to a resonate antenna. They also don't hear as well. This is true of all the non resonate broadband antennas that use "Transformers and/or Resistors". No one disputes this fact. They also need an antenna tuner, which a resonate antenna such as a Silver Bullet, Buddistick or 49 to 1 end fed do not need. Check out "Chuck" on youtube. He gave an honest review on this antenna. Unless you are running ALS, I can't see any reason to run this design antenna. People just glow and gush when giving reviews on this style of antenna. Amazing how free stuff clouds the mind. No one disputes the quality of Chameleon antenna. The quality is great. It's the performance of the antenna that is the sticking point. You need to know what you are spending your hard earned money on. Performance will be almost non existent on 80 and 160 meters. No different that any other shortened vertical.

I agree with what you said. I did however buy this antenna...all $575 of it. At the time I was not well versed in antennas as I am now and I thought it was fantastic until I found that there are much better and more affordable antenna solutions especially with resonant antennas which is pretty much all I run and build now. The MPAS has its place, but it is definitely not the be all end all that I thought it would have been when I first got into ham radio. Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!

@@HR4NT I understand why you thought it might have been a great antenna for you. You made my point for me. So many new hams spend a great deal of $$$ thinking that the wideband antennas with the 5 to 1 balun will be a great performing antenna, only to find out it's really not. Especially compared to a resonate antenna. Yes, wideband antennas have their uses, but not for 95% of the hams out there. These wide band antennas are being pushed so hard by many channels. Before buying any antenna, be sure to check into the design of the antenna. There is really nothing new as to antenna design in many years. Just re packaging of existing designs. Many of the expensive antennas out there can be made at home. Some are easier to just buy depending on the price. A $200.00 end fed antenna will not perform any better that a $50.00 homemade antenna, and you can have the same quality in materials at the $50. price point, homemade. All the extra money you spend on expensive antennas will yield no extra gain in performance over the same design homemade or buying a cheaper version of the same design antenna. The people who make these wideband antennas do not tell the buyers that their antennas will be a full two "S" units down from a resonate antenna in transmission strength. That is really sad and dishonest. Buyer beware when looking at any antenna. Do your homework.

Thank you so much for this video. I’m a new Ham and so many of these videos fast forward through the setup.
I don’t have my General yet, but have purchase the MPAS 2.0 to go with my ic-705. The only other HF antenna I own is a magnetic loop.
But since I am so new and trying to learn everything all at once, seeing step by step how it all works is quite useful.
I am wondering what bands you were planning on trying to hit with that vertical configuration had the weather cooperated ?
I’m learning my radio and wanting to hang out on 20 & 40 for now and want to figure out how to best utilize my MPAS 2.0
Thanks again. Your videos are very helpful.

Thanks for the comment. I primarily work on 20M. I have tried 40 unsuccessfully. Probably an issue on my end. The other bands I would like to work aren't doing much right now, like 10M. I spend a lot of time on 20M FT8 which seems to be working just fine. Made tons of contacts on there over in Europe and Japan and so on. The MPAS does so much and reaches all of the HF bands, I would try everything out that you can and try the different configurations of the MPAS. Different situations will call for different setups and having them all on one bag is pretty slick. I am using the MPAS for POTA now and am waiting to find a good spot to go and try that out. 73!

The Mpas 2 is a VERY overpraised excuse for an antenna with dismal performance. For way under $100 you can build a G5RV or ZS6BKW or do like most Hams have always done and put up a dipole for each band you plan to use.
If you live in an HOA or need something quick and dirty for Field day or POTA it'll get you by but don't expect very good results. Still, something is a little better than nothing at all.

After having purchased this antenna and using it a few times I 110% agree with you...very overpriced for what it does AND you still need a tuner to use it!! For $575 it could have at least been resonant!!!! That was one of my first videos before I knew what I know now and now if I want a new antenna, I just build one. Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!

Hi, that was a very good demo of how to set the MPAS 2.0 Antenna up in the vertical configuration , you can't beat the quality of this Antenna system. Don't forget to keep the joints in the Antenna elements clean and free of corrosion and oxidation with some Electrical jointing grease, maybe deoxit? Have fun.73 Alex M0KVA

It seems a bit steep until you own one. The quality put into making this antenna is second to none. The bands it will reach as well as the many ways to set it up and the fact that it is portable to take anywhere makes it worth it to me. I was on the fence when i was thinking about buying it with other options out there, but once it showed up, I got it. If you know someone who has one, i suggest going and taking a look and checking it out first hand. My review doesn't do it justice. Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!

Hi Scott, I’ve had mine on Backorder since end of November, 2020. The store that I ordered it from with my IC 7300 has them on backorder since last October. Upgraded to General Class, haven’t been on air yet. I hope my dealer gets his backorder supply soon. I’m getting a little discouraged at this point.
But thanks for showing us what to expect when it arrives. Let us know what kind of performance you get with it.

Hello Carl, I’ve been on backorder with R&L Electronics. I am very happy with all my purchases, but I’m just waiting for them to get their fair share of backorder products. I hope the antenna comes in soon. I’d like to see if I can have a QSO.
With my new rig, rather than collect dust.
30 years ago or so I made a multi band dipole. We moved a couple of times and I just can’t seem to find it.

WOW! Sorry to hear you are still waiting. I considered buying from a dealer when I made my purchase thinking maybe they would have one in a corner somewhere in stock. However, since you can buy direct from the manufacturer for the same price, it seemed to be a better option for me at the time. The guys at Chameleon are working hard to fulfill orders and not just from their orders direct, but also to the other dealers that carry their products. With the recent rise in people getting involved in Ham radio now there are shortages everywhere for all sorts of equipment. Maybe give R&L a call and see if they have a status update. I really wish I had a better answer for you. Waiting over 6 months is a major bummer. Thank you for the comment! and thank you for supporting the channel.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I have contacted R&L several times , and perhaps several weeks ago and they are waiting for there backorder supply since last October. They had a good price and since everything I read about them was good , I ordered the antenna with my Icom radio at the same time. So the wait continues. I even emailed Chameleon Antenna a while back describing my order history, and they said backorder wait was from 30-45 days. So we will see what happens.

@@HR4NT Hi Scott, Well I ordered the MPAS 2.0 directly from Chameleon Antenna a few minutes ago. We will see how long the backorder takes. I spoke to one of the sales people at R&L yesterday, and they have no problem with that. They have on backorder, 6 MPAS 2.0, but have not received any yet. So we will see what happens in the next couple of months.
I'll keep you posted as to when I get it. Thanks again for your reply, and 73's. Dave.

I have seen a couple videos on that antenna but not familiar with the packaging. The bag I received was a surprise to me. I figured that the packs they were mailing these out with that it just was the way that they decided to store the items, so receiving the bigger bag was nice. Maybe hit up Amazon and see if you can find a bag that would suit your needs for packing the antenna better for you. Bags and packs these days are not that expensive. Just an idea.
