My favorite antenna (s) has to be homebrew wire antennas. I found that the 130' inverted L was easiest to work on as the feed point was at ground level and It allowed me to experiment with different baluns to best suite the internal ATU in my TS-450. I had about four 65' radials along with several 5' copper ground rods. It worked well on all bands and was great for DX !

Man thank you so much for this recommendation. I live in a senior manufactured home park here in rural Dago. They don't want antennas. This will work. I can hide it in my little yard. Now I can move to HF. You're great. TKS from Jimbo, KN6FDS... Love your videos and congrats for the huge amount of subscribers.

    1) Mil Extension does not fit into the backpack but sticks out quite far.
    2)Comes with 75ft of wire not 50ft.
3)Stake needs to be wooden to kill vampires.

I'll second the Wolf River coils COIL. A guy can put together a package just like this one, with a little bit of effort buying separate parts, from different suppliers, for ALOT less than $550, like $200.... and have a RESONANT antenna system, to boot.

On a side note, I use the Chameleon MPAS antenna as my main antenna, and have used it with several radios to reach both coasts from here in Kansas on 80m, 40m, and 20m. Awesome antenna! I love mine!

  • @loughkb
    @loughkb 4 ปีที่แล้ว

People sometimes focus on the wrong thing with the MPAS. Your title gets it right. It's designed to be versatile. Providing many antenna types in one package, allowing one to get on the air in a variety of ways under a variety of conditions. It's not the most efficient antenna at all, with the lossy 5:1 hybrid module eating some of your power and a tuner required in most cases. But that's not the point of the project. The former point is.
As far as that goes, it's built very well and should be durable and last for many many years.
    Good review.
    See you at Qfest.

Using a Wolfriver coils antenna. Like a screwdriver antenna but manual adjustment. First time I set it up in the front yard, just dirt ground, with its tripod talked with a guy in east Texas with a 5/9 receive and transmit, with a hundred watts. Mind you the tripod was sitting on the ground. Called the Silver bullet 1000. was able to adjust the antenna from 6m to 80m with the adjustable SS whip included. Works well for what it is.

I got the MPAS 2.0 after waiting 2 months due to covid.
To say I'm impressed is an understatement. Since getting it I am using it as a base antenna for 40 and 20m at night, I had got it to use as a portable antenna, 20m is good lately and I get regular contacts up to 9,000 kms away from my QTH in Ireland, on SSB. I regularly get North and South America even amung pileups with high power European statons, it might take me a while but they hear me, I only run 100 watts. Last night I heard a station from Sydney on 20m but then some European station came on almost on top of him and wiped him out.
I haven't tried other bands yet mainly because I can really only operate in the evenings and early night.
I also have the CHA Cap Hat.
What's interesting is the antenna is much quieter than my EFHW which allows me hear the dx stations and this helps a lot to reduce static crashes from Thunderstorms. But the EFHW allows me hear closer stations much better at the expense of more noise and more static crashes.
I only use the supplied single counterpoise too.
I only briefly tried the wire Supplied wire antenna on ft8, just threw it up in a tree and made some weird loop but it clearly showed the wire config is good for NVIS.
Build quality is fantastic, I am very happy with this antenna and it has greatly exceeded my expectations, I may even get the anti seize compound and leave it up all the time and only take it down if I intend to work portable because you really can take it down and set up in 5 mins.
This is an amazing antenna and if you buy I guarantee you will be amazed, it's worth every cent, I am so impressed with the quality I may even buy one of Chameleons loops.

I own a CHA HYBRID. I mounted the matching unit on an Outback “Outpost” base and the 30’ wire on a slope. SWR is extremely high, so will see what a tuner does for that. Quality is outstanding. I also run a PAR ENFEDZ 20 meter antenna.. superb. Flat SWR out of the box.

I have this exact antenna system. I totally agree this is is the best most versatile antenna system on the market. I strongly recommend that anyone who does off-grid Emcomm, or other mobile or portable operations buy one. I also recommend that you get an extra set of radials. I have the ground spike and the jaw clamp, both of which are extremely useful in the field.

Bob, when you feel a little adventurous, look up the old articles on BALLOON and KITE antennas. Yes, a box kite can lift a lot of air-cooled thin wire and today's thin kevlar kite string is the way to hold onto it. A party tank of helium and some balloons, a mylar large one, all sorts of options to get a long wire up 500 to 1000 feet. Do beware, some wicked static charges are going to come down that wire along with the RX.
Real easy to carry and pack.(g)

Loops are great antennas just very Hi-Q. Generally I like to bounce around on the band.

This is a decent review. I have a few comments to add from my own experience with this antenna.
I stow the Mil ext in the side pocket and lash it with the compression straps. It's a little less "snaggy" and the pack can remain closed.
I have not deployed this as a wire antenna (yet). I'm thinking that an inverted L would be a good way to go.
I don't use the RG58 that was provided with the kit. I use some RG8X and a CM choke from The Wireman. The difference between the two cables is not much on the lower bands, but this saves me a few db on the upper HF bands or VHF, if they ever get active again.
The spike is not very useful here in Nevada -- too many rocks in the hard desert ground. But it will go with me on my next road trip because there are lots of places it would work.
To followup on that last comment, I use the tripod base from a Wolf River Coils antenna where the spike won't work. You have to stake or weight the tripod or the wind my tip over your antenna, but the tripod works. The counterpoise/ground field I built for the WRC also works with the MPAS vertical to reduce ground losses. The WRC antenna is a good antenna too, but it is not frequency agile if you need that capability.
If I was going to solo hike for an operation, I would not carry this antenna. I carry a wire antenna and a mast. If a group of us were hiking for an operation, then this would be OK for one person to carry this antenna (with some personal gear) and another to carry the radio and power supply. The pack is OK for a short walk or from working out of the vehicle, but would not be a good hiking pack... at least if you were carrying any additional gear.
You're modeling of the Mil-whip from the pack made me think of the HFPack pedestrian mobile folks. Yes, it is a thing. Ha!
Chameleon customer service has been excellent.
OK, that's all I got before another cup of coffee. Thanks for the review!

Congrats on 25K. I pack linked dipoles. But the do require support structure. I also use the Packtenna supported by a 10 meters push-up mast from SOTABEAMS.
