For real. For me it was because I couldn’t get over all of the kind hearted people burning for eternity in Hell, but the people who were a part of the religion was a close second reason.

This is not just a Christianity problem. I am an Indian atheist, grew up as a Hindu, I am 22 at present and have seen the rise of the Hindu right nationalists in front of my eyes and used to be an ardent supporter of them throughout my teenage years. As I matured, I started seeing exactly what these guys were doing, they didn't want to do my welfare, they didn't even care fof me or people like me, all they wanted was power for themselves and they were using these fear tactics that everyone is against us especially Muslims and western countries to make us thier sheep, thier cult followers, thier army of maniacs. As I lost my faith in all those gods (yes I used to believe those legends as actual history) I tried to convey this thing to mom, but what I got in return that you'll be depressed and lonely without faith, you have to believe but she failed to realise that I was depressed beacause of faith and all the politics it brings with it. I felt so much relief when I stopped being a Hindu. My remaining fear went away when I educated myself on the history of the world and how all the culturs evolved which made me realise that there is nothing like "the" culture, there is only "a" culture and a population constitute of different admixture of cultures, ethnicities and behaviours. All want to say to the religious people who think that being associated with some kind of politics is beneficial for your faith is that you are kidding yourself, this conservative politics is not only poisoning your religion, its also poisoning your mindset.

I applaud your enlightenment, and urge your caution. I've been a lifelong opponent of religion, and being from scandinavia its been difficult but as of yet not dangerous, but it's getting to the point again where this might change even here. Take care my friend! Don't let anyone corrupt you, but also stay safe! p.s. Personally in my life very few amongst my religious family or friends have changed their minds (at least not openly), and much as it pains me to say this, don't count on it happening!

Hate to sound like I am nit picking, but that is not really accurate. As you state, religious membership is declining quite fast AND those that still 'believe' are getting more extreme, but Evangelicalism is not on the rise, it's on the decline Like any animal, and that *IS* what it is, it fights harder the more 'boxed in' it is.. that's what this is. Evangelicalism is shrinking and dying a natural death as societies grow up and like any death that is fought rather than accepted (everything dies eventually), it's ugly and destructive. The horse is dead... they just refuse to let it die and are therefore more extreme as you point out... that does not mean they are 'rising'... just the opposite.
Even when I was still a Christian, I hated going to church! Too boring and the social aspect of it gives me anxiety. Fortunately, my family rarely ever went to church. Now that I'm an atheist, I never want to go inside a church ever again.
I stopped being Christian because there came a point where basically...I understood how Jesus felt, when he entered the temple, and saw it filled with merchants. I watched something sacred, ancient, beautiful, even, turned into just another way to make money. To control. The greatest irony is that despite doing everything in His name, if Jesus were to return, he'd be utterly appalled by what he saw.

The heartbreak for me was when I realized that this is all it had ever been from the very beginning. Imagine the promise of eternal happiness turning out to be a cheap lie. Nothing hurts more than that.
As a former Muslim who lives in a Muslim country, I was trying my best to be as devout of a Muslim as possible during my teenage years. However, what ultimately triggered my subsequent departure from Islam was a combination of the following: hypocrisy, bigotry & politics. I was always appalled by the fact that most people who cared very much to project their religious identity were more concerned with hating non-conformists than actually bettering themselves. Furthermore, even those who had religious authority seemed more busy hating the others, such as myself, seeing that I'm an ace, in addition to politics, than anything else. One other thing that always rubbed me the wrong way was everyone's tendency of disregarding the simplest yet most personal Islamic teachings such as, not stealing, not lying, loving other people and being kind to them, being kind to animals, not cheating, etc. Ultimately, what drove me away from religion wasn't people who criticized it, but the people who defended it. I'm glad I'm done and over with it.
I am also a former Muslim living in a Muslim country. My reasons for leaving the religion of peace are quite similar to yours. The difference is that I have never been a devout believer though I tried hard.

George Orwell addresses this very well in 1984, albeit in an extremely exaggerated way. The Party in the novel is always on the lookout for new scientific ways of producing babies that are independent of sexual intercourse and, the thing they fear more, love. I can't help but see the resemblance to traditionally arranged marriages, in any of the Abrahamic religions (or others as well). The biggest irony is that the people (males I should stress) that I knew who belonged to religion never shied away from bringing their obsession with sex and female bodies to my attention. The best defense of it that's been offered is that it gives a reason why people suffer, without cause (Job was described as being totally old-law righteous), and without explanation. However, for me, that falls flat; as the pissing contest had no moral purpose from the start. Believing friends fall back to "you can't judge God's morality"... but I fall back to "I can't pledge myself to something that isn't morally superior to myself."
An old lady told me today that she was going to an event in a church, then quickly added: “not that I’m going to the church for worship, God forbid.” Took me a minute to ponder before she added: “it’s a Christmas singing event that I’ve been attending many years in that venue long before I stopped going to Church. I still enjoy the renditions and will probably attend till I die, but I can’t call myself a Christian anymore.” There’s hope for mankind.

I’m a private care giver and I have worked as a nurse for many years. Most religious people are elderly, and they are the most anxious, fearful, obsessive people I’ve ever met. They rarely die in peace. Tomorrow I have to get up and drive in the ice and snow on a notoriously treacherous road to go pick up an elderly Catholic couple to take them to church. The woman is so anxious all the time about when church is. What if I were sick? Or there was a dangerous storm? She still anxiously expects me to take her and her husband to church. Why? Will they have to spend for time sizzling in purgatory if they miss a Sunday? It really seems that. Way. They have 7 grown children. They raised them very strict Catholic. NONE of them live in the area anymore and only one daughter ever flies home to visit. None of them are religious. Although this is very sad because religion DESTROYS families, it’s a tiny bit encouraging -MAYBE because at least we can see that their religion will die with them. For the most part. But how will their childrens’ families pass on something better? Recover from the trauma of being raised so severely? I hope they can do better!
in my experience its quite the opposite, a lot of christians have accepted that theyll die and have strong enough faith theyll go to heaven that they arent really bothered by it. my christian grandparents (still living) have openly said many times that theyre completely ready and dont want resuscitated if anything happens. theyre very calm and fine about everything. also recall a neurology documentary that featured catholic nuns who were in their 80s-90s and seemed happy and relaxed as ever, and better cognitive ability than a lot of 20-30 year olds. my mom also works in a nursing home and is around the hospice type areas a lot and from what shes told me any of the ones she knew that were christian had very peaceful deaths and again seemed very ready and accepting. the woman youre describing just seems like she has anxiety or some other sort of mental illness, possibly from the old age (early stages of dementia maybe?). that seems like a very specific personal thing unrelated to her being catholic.
@@micah4628 eh, both are generalizing. Its the way you are taught about religion, more so than religion itself. If you are taught to fear god, to fear hell, to fear punishment, to hate sins, to condemn others - how would you ever be at pease with yourself? You will always keep on thinking about the gruesome hell that may await you, about all the punishment you will recieve based on the sins you may abhorr, but still commit. These kinds of mindsets can't lead to a peaceful death, except when the one dying is a sociopath who has absolute self-confidence - but then, these types don't need religion either to die peacefully I assume. If you are taught that you will be rewarded in death, that you will be juddged on how you lived by your morals, not whetever you attended all the ceremonies and said all the prayers - this will obviously result in a different mindset. But even here, yoou don't need religion to achieve it. It really is more about your upbringing than religion in the end - how you cope with your finite life, with death and the possibility of nothinghness. TL;DR: Way of upbringing way more important than religion in this case

Lets take two examples, both believe in the religion that postulates: - if you are a good person, you will get rewarded for eterneity after death - if you are a bad person, you will punished for all eternity Person A has lived their life as well as they could. They have helped out people, never murdererd, and all in all had tried to be a good person. Person A is on their death bed, but seeing back towards their life, well, it was a good life. Person A is at peace Person B has always been told to be a good person, or they would fall into eternal punishment at death. It has always been stressed. It was always the core point of any presentation, that Person B MUST be a good person. That it is integral to be one. But what is a good person? Person B asked around, and got wildly different answers. Some said that you must never sin, and once you do, must repent at once. Others say that you must attend all ceremonies, never skip them. And then there are those that define being a good person as someone who was faithful to their faith,, and not morally good. In their opinion, a good person would be someone, who converted others, a firebrand that 'saved' people by convincing them of their religion. Person B doesn't know if they were a good person. After all, what is a good person? So, person B is anxious. They decided to follow as many of these definitions as possible, in order to not risk into falling into eternal punishment. So they attend every ceremony if possible. They memorize everything that is considered 'sin' to avoid doing such a thing - and should they, they would repent with all their heart. They were always agressively defending their religion, trying to get others to convert - but hasn't managed to do that. So, does person B consider themself a good person? It seems that some don't agree. Would their god agree or disagree? If their god would disagree, would not eternal punishment the result? How could person B be peaceful in this situation. Their eternity is balancing on a knifes edge! Maybe it was enough, maybe not! So they will try everything to ensure they are regarded as a 'good' person. Fear. Desperation. No peace. And yet both were adherent to the same religion. Both were 'true' believers. The only difference is how they were taught, and the definitions. For A, eternity wasn't the centerpoint, but the way they lived their life - iff their life is ggood, so will be the ensuing eternity. For B, everything in life was centered around eternity. Life was but a short stop before time infinite, something that will soon be forgotten. Life itself was unimportant, instead the central question of the judgment was its center. Fear can be powerful. Especially if its instilled and reinforced by other persons in addition to their self. If you are taught from birth to fear, and those around you reinforce it - it will be hard to break from it, ESPECIALLY if you don't break from the others as well. As long as you remain with those that reinforce your fears, they will return. Don't discoount the power it can have. The trauma it can generate. And how easily it can consume a young mind that is still malleable.

There was a good bit of resistance to the rise of the religious right from theologians at the time. They argued that the separation of church and state wasn't just to protect citizens from the church, but also to keep the church sacred. Being a bit player in worldly affairs made it more vulnerable to taking the wrong side than it empowered it to influence things. And here we stand now. I'm pretty sure they were right.
Yet, you and others just calling yourselves Christian indicates that you are not heretic to their morals. If you are, you should change label to Gnostic Christian and be a loyal heretic and try to show your better thinking. For evil to grow etc.. You can't separate politics and religion. Both make rules about life in a society which can conflict. The concept of a separate state and religion only exists in European culture which fought in the Protestant wars. The minor differences between denominations isn't worth fighting deadly wars over.

I left, too, didn't take me but a matter of months even though I did meet some very nice well meaning people. I miss them but what can I do? My step dad was with them for about 15 years, possibly more, but he moved from the U. S. to Australia. They don't have enough understanding of the unfortunate, the main population of them, and they are very Tea Party Right Winged in politics, normally, a few aren't... They push push and push people, even when they are top grade and a lot of them shame others and the temple requirements are outlandish! It's a very worldly $ driven top dog religion!
I am grateful I come from a Congregationalist background where the focus of sermons was always on acceptance, love for your neighbor, and community. Even as an agnostic I still enjoy going because of the kindness and community found there. Truly a contrast from the hateful brand of Christianity I have so often seen elsewhere.

One thing rather humorous was that the biggest opponents of gays bashers were my local holy men. They say making gays a joke was as tasteless as making jokes about the poor, the sick, and the stupid.
But on what basis? I have a catholic background so I can tell you that our focus was to raise a person in a holistic way: heart as well as brain. It was Protestantism that broke from the long scholastic tradition and followed a more gnostic, more Neoplatonist paradigm which to describe it shortly prosecuted REASON and emphasized emotions. But then faith becomes just a matter of whim, feeling, no reasoning, no arguments. And then, worse things happen.
My parents have been taken by this horrid version of Christianity. I had to cut them out of my life entirely. Full NC. It broke my heart every time I talked to my mother, and my dad just wouldn't talk to me at all anyhow.

God is the epitome of Holiness because He is sinlessly perfect, A sinner (liar, sexually immoral, taking the Lord’s Name in vain, thief etc) cannot be in the presence of God or else he will be utterly consumed therefore repent of your sins and put your faith in Jesus as your Lord and Saviour to go to Heaven.

This did not shake my faith in God but in the world and the people in it. Narrow is the path because of many of the reasons he discussed. Its important to have a relationship with God put your faith and trust in him. Follow him not church or religion. People have tainted and twisted the truth to fit them and weaponized christianity as a tool in many ways but if you have a relationship with him you have the fruits of the spirit and you are in the world but not a part of it you will see the truth and the path to follow. God is real and can not be pushed by people. If you reach out God will reach out. Not mans place but Gods. We plant the seed and show others how to reach out and God is in charge of the rest on his timing and in his way. I love you all and I hope you find the truth. Not mans truth or the truth of religion or the church but the truth of God.
My grandma hates the church, and says they are not following what jesus taught. She just believes in god. Even if i myself am an atheist i respect her and christians like her that arent using christianity to spread hate.
Thing is, people like your grandmother are swelling the ranks of the “bums not on benches”, she’s finding that the world doesn’t come to an end if she doesn’t go to church. She may continue to be a believer but she’s not having homophobia or some of Christianity’s weirder beliefs reinforced. She may or may not go the whole way but she’s started the journey and it sounds as if you have continued it.

As a former Christian. You hit the nail on the head. My moment that made me lose faith after years growing up in my local church. Taking pride in the fact that America has a separation of church and state. Suddenly takes a stance one day against gay marriage. This was in the mid 2000’s. The rest of my years as a Christian was on autopilot until I turned 18. After watching the kids in my age group. Failing to understand questioning aspects of the faith critically and just nodding their heads to look good in front of the youth pastors. But gossiping and talking down about people from school in the youth house. Many talked bad about friends of mine, when they were acting all chummy at school. Earlier that day. The fact that they cannot handle criticism or challenges towards the standards of the religion. While simultaneously pushing their values on others. Projecting on others like they are the ones doing it. All while never talking bad about capitalism or the wealthy donors that made sure of it. The church got fancier. While they started pushing away poor people or people in need. Got a public image of accomplishment to hold after all. Got to look prosperous for the other churches and the wealthy white people in it

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the most Christian man I’ve ever met was an anarchist. Cared only about helping and uplifting others. Loved others as he loved himself. He was a Christian and acted like it. I have immense respect for him.
I find anarchism and Christianity to be very compatible in my own faith. Many people who like to extol the virtues of the state based on Romans 13 overlook the fact that the Church described in Romans 12 is its antithesis. Not to mention Jesus gives instruction to His disciples not to use honorific titles, that money is an abomination, and to not concern ourselves with material possessions. If the love of money is the root of all evil, then I think "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" and "there is no ethical consumption under capitalism" may be analogous sentiments.

But the guy unfortunately started sleeping around (1 cor 6:9). He died middle aged and went to hell forever it was dark but Jesus lit up the area, he asked Jesus for another chance but unfortunately it was too late for him, Pretty sad, Repent and ask Jesus to help you with your struggles (James 4:7)

I grew up christian. Left partly after finding out I'm gay, and yes it was a discovery because for a long time it was an actual blind spot, didn't even know it was an option because it was covered so thoroughly. But also partly left because our pastor was asking questions, and I realized everyone was answering with the same kind of language, the same kind of answers, and when he asked them what that meant without using the church's preprogrammed responses no one could answer. I don't know if he was questioning his faith, or if he just wanted to dig through the surface nonsense and teach people to be Christians the way we were always told to be but never understood. Every once in a while I question myself. Did I make the right choice to leave? What if I'm wrong? I look at the things I believe and ask myself if I'm the bad guy. Every time I'm glad I left christianity, though sometimes I do make note of some very cruel and twisted beliefs I have. And I try to be careful about who I am, and who I am becoming, every day. It's a struggle. But that's how I know this path is better than the one I was on. The scariest christians are the ones who never question their beliefs.
thats a very interesting perspective thank you for sharing it. i do agree that as a christian its very important to question your faith, as thats the one of the main things that can truly make it stronger. its kinda like a 'what doesnt kill you makes you stronger' type situation, and for some people it ends up killing their faith which i do find sad but can see why it happens. also id imagine your pastor was trying to show everyone how little they really know and how they need to actually get in touch with God and His word the way that christians are supposed to instead of just knowing a few bible verses and giving the same copy paste response on everything. tbh even being a christian (so naturally id want others to also be christian), i prefer seeing others who are agnostic/atheist who constantly questions themselves and are actually looking for the truth than those who claim to be christian just because they were born into it and never questioned it. as far as i know i would still believe/know Jesus to be the truth in my spirit but im never going to act as if in my mind i can truly KNOW what the answer is. nobody can, and if anybody could truly 100% prove any questions about things like the afterlife or the creation of the universe everybody wouldve been sided with them and there would be no speculation or debates on the topic in the first place. honestly i find it very dumb that any theist or atheist tries to argue that they know theyre right, especially atheists who are so so convinced theyre right although thats probly js bias i have which i do try to work on. i try to keep an open mind but honestly most atheist channels who speak on the subject just lack any understanding of christianity or the bible (for example this guy, genetically modified skeptic, etc) ive never heard anything really convincing. they do seem to know about the bible and have done some studying on it generally but that doesnt really mean anything to me. and while i understand everybody has their biases i just dont feel i can trust a strongly atheistic, openly christian-hating person on their views on christianity cause theyll just try to frame everything super negatively. the only truly neutral accounts ive been able to find only go super surface level or stick to more historic and fact based areas (which i get it but yk). idk if i mentioned already or not since im not rereading over this big ol yap session but if you are interested possibly in looking into christianity again i could try my best to help and also there are a lot of resources out there on youtube and stuff but the main thing in my opinion is actually having conversations w christians, maybe by checking out like a bible study group for example like swinging by one session as a guest. anyways though (if you even read through all this lol) have a wonderful day!
@@micah4628 it would be a bit easier to read with some formatting. I think the god I believed in would rather have someone turn away from the belief than try to fake it or be a hypocrite. In the bible there is the parable of the prodigal son. There is the story of Saul who hated Christians, and was approached by an angel. But beyond that, a god that is willing to mislead his followers as was done in the binding of Isaac story, or several others, could very well have allowed the Bible to be twisted as a test. In the end, if there is a god, what we deserve is between each of us and that god. I could not follow a cruel one no matter what they threatened, and I would hope a kind one would understand why I would turn away from that faith.

I cannot follow a religion that uses politics as justification for anything. For good 20+ years I was made to believe that worshipping false idols is against one of the Ten Commandments. Apparently it's okay as long as it's whatever political party they are affiliated with.

I am European, I'm born in 1955 and went to a catholic school, my parents were believers, so I learned to be a good boy, polite, helping, not judgemental, honest...not much in dogma, I had no obligation to go to the church. I was not so much in that "God" thing, more the "Christ" thing.I started to have some questions, like every week we had to confess or sins and had then to say some prayers and were then freed of our sins. On my 12 years, I asked the Father teaching religion why the christian religion was the only truth one, the answer I had was to be banned from the class for the entire school year. 2 years later I went to a ashram and became Sikh and Buddhist. The problems I have with Christianity, I can not understand why a "God" should need to be worshiped. The people representing that "God" are: liars, hypocrites,cheaters...but that's not a problem, confession clean you. A little to easy in my opinion. And I never grasped the meaning of "sin", wtf is a sin, I can do bad, stupid, wrong things for which I take responsibility...so now I'm an Atheist, normally I don't start talking religion.

are just born into it and cluelessly and blindly follow. i do definitely get what you mean. however i would be cautious of SOME of the atheists who seem to know a lot about christianity, for example that youtube channel "genetically modified skeptic" twists cherry picked bible verses so far from their original meaning i find it crazy anyone believes him on anything, yet a lot do. although many supposed christians do similar things so i cant really judge too much. anyways though imma just keep it 100 real quick no matter what arguments or historical evidence or whatever that could suggest christianitys the truth you see, none of it will ever be an 100% certain guarantee so if thats what you feel you would need to believe then i cant really be of any help. but the main way i tend to think about it (although its not necessarily a super logical or scientific approach) as someone going into biology and possibly veterinary sciences or med school i find the complexities and mysteries of human bodys just doesnt feel possible to have happened randomly by chance. in a way nothing really does like when i look out into the night sky or into a forest or really any place with life it just feels like a creator had made it to be the way it is. on a less emotional and more logical note though, i also (while i have looked a lot into it) cant really get behind abiogenesis (idea that life came from nonlife, by means of random chance). although things like viruses that are kinda on the verge of being considered living or not do get me thinking about those sort of possibilities but idk i js cant really get behind it. also youve probly heard it before and heard arguments from both sides regarding it but i do generally agree with the fine-tuning argument. the other ways generally to look at it is to say that theres infinite universes and life just happened to come about in this one because by chance it ended up being the perfect one, but i find that still doesnt have any answer as to where those infinite universes came from and theres just as little proof of the idea of a multiverse as there is proof of a god and to me a god feels a lot more likely. and also again this next part is gonna be very subjective and emotion based but try to stick with me if you can. when i enter christian churches like the big cathedral type ones i just feel a sort of holy presence that i dont feel anywhere else. also personal experiences while again not very scientific and cant be proven to be true play a big role for me, namely the time when my grandma had her firstborn son (my uncle) asleep up in the attic of their farmhouse and she heard a knock on the door. she says she didnt even open the door yet and heard a voice telling her that there was a fire in her attic and to get her baby out. she ran upstairs and got him out safely and then they put the fire out before it spread too far. she swears by everything that it was an angel that day, as after she went back down to thank her she opened the door to find nobody in sight, keep in mind this was a farmhouse with big open flat fields surrounding it so not much room to hide and would take a while to run off. and to be honest if her recollection of the story is true i dont see how that couldve been just any person because they couldnt have possibly known she had a baby up there. thats just one story and ive heard many. also the old testament prophecies fulfilled by jesus to me shows enough proof that of the abrahamic religions christianity is by far the most likely to be true as judaism denies jesus and islam i dont even wanna get into but i have some issues with it for sure. so overall generally i just find it a lot more likely that there is some god out there, and of the major religions i find christianity seems the most likely. i havent really looked much into things like buddhism or hinduism but from the limited understanding i have it feels like hinduism really is just a reflection of what indian culture was/is like and that buddhism isnt so much a religion as it is a way of life or a philosophy, which i do make distinctions between since i dont really get calling atheist philosophies 'religions'. so to me i do really believe that christ is the absolute truth, but i do still try to keep an open mind for other possibilities since there isnt necessarily a way to KNOW and it has a lot to do w faith. also in terms of online resources honestly it can be hard to find good ones but i think it can be interesting to watch debates on the topic, that way whether you agree or disagree with either side you still hear both and can pick out the good parts of both of their arguments. also the channel 'redeemed zoomer' explains christianity related stuff in a very very simple and easy to digest way, but some of his bias towards his own denomination (presbyterian) can be noticed a decent bit in his videos. generally though i think one of the best ways to learn stuff on the topic is by talking with people in real life (pastors/priests, christian friends, etc), although this can be even more of a struggle since you cant always tell at first who believes what and if its for the right reasons. i would say more stuff but this has gotten way too long lol and im way behind on my schoolwork i should be doing right now so imma end it here, thank you so much for reading all this if you did or even skimming through and sorry i couldnt provide many specific resources or super super solid arguments but for the limited amount of time to write this i did kinda try anyways, It’s worth pointing out that there might be times where you’re still afraid of god. Anyone who was made to believe that there was a hateful god that punished anyone who wasn’t a part of the religion will have to spend some time adjusting to not believing that anymore. Eventually your brain will forget to be afraid and you’ll be free. I don’t personally hate religion or anything, so I’m saying this purely to support your decision and not to influence it. If you decide to go back, that’s completely okay too.

Seeing 2 different 2000+ member churches near me, tells me that there are a lot of churches way below that level of people. Plus I know many people that have left the small churches for the big churches. Which makes me worried that it’s just church redistribution
It isn't JUST redistribution. A lot of people at least leave all forms of organized congregation, regardless of size. And a lot of this redistribution is actually a continuation of the extreme balkanization of christian denominations in the USA, where any difference in opinion or exegesis leads to a schism and two new churches going on... just with these churches being "non denominational" or "independent", leading many people away from bigger groups like baptists, adventists etc... away from some form of compromise interpretation of christianity that is open for many people towards more fundamentalist views that are suited for far less people even if they can aggregate more people in ONE PLACE, they will never outgrow a group of churches that together make up tens of millions of believers.under one coordinated doctrine. Joel Osteen may have space for 20k people in one event and all his branches have what? 120,000 people nominally members of his brand of church (expect maybe 1/3 to regularly go to events)... but 120k is not the 50 millions of the major baptist alliances or the 15.6 million of Methodists and Pentecostals...

These are the same type of people that say that without religion, you can never mourn the ones that have been lost. Well, let me tell those people something. I've been an atheist for nearly 30 years and have mourned quite a few people in my family that are no longer around anymore. The most recent example would be when my father lost his fight with pancreatic cancer over four months ago. Watching him deteriorate before his final days was the most painful experience in my life. He actually died as I sat next to him while he laid on his hospice bed. I'm still mentally recovering from his passing and I don't know when I will fully recover. I miss him everyday and even cry from time to time. As long as I'm alive, my memories of him will live on and that's all that matters. Even after going through all of what I just mentioned, I'm still an atheist because I know that what these people try to tell you is BS and insulting and that there is more to this world and the universe on a scientific level than what these fools tell you. Also, in the words of a former user and a friend of Darkmatter: "Live life, cause you only have one."

Today I was chatting with an older man in his 60s. He works at the grocery store here in the eastern Sierra mountains California. And he asked me if I knew how the mountains formed. And I said yes it's where two continental plates collided and basically the mountains are where the earth's crust crinkled upwards forming the mountains. and he told me no no no that's wrong. He proceeded to tell me that when God made the mountains that somehow the volcanoes were involved and something about them erupting and forming the mountains. And from then on i just let him do the talking and i just nodded my head until he left

I can't help but think about the difference between the small neighborhood church that my paternal grandparents and my father attended and the megachurches that dominate the city I currently live in (not the one where I or my father grew up). My paternal grandparents, while far from perfect people, knew what it was to grow up poor, and to struggle, and they were, as a result, kind and generous, and their religion (as well as the church that they chose) reflected that. While I would grow up to be an atheist, I was never unnerved by their church. My mother's family was always better off, and while my mother ended up as a pretty good person, her father was absolutely the sort of person always moving towards more authoritarianism and a strong desire to use his religious identity as a way of justifying his own bad behavior and his desire to control others who were, arguably, actually behaving in a far more Christian way than he was. I am grateful that my paternal grandparents didn't live to see the rise of Trump (who they always considered a shameless charlatan, from his rise in prominence during the 1980s) as I think it would have broken their hearts to see the public face of Christianity orient itself towards his hateful politics. I am also glad that my maternal grandfather didn't live to see it because it would have made him feel vindicated and righteous in his bad behavior.

this might be a really bad thing, I am an atheist but I also recognize that without Christianity our societies are in far more danger from outside actors (other religions, especially Islam) because the people no longer have a strong connection to each other and are unwilling to fight for what our societies has become. our family went to a couple churches when i was younger, and most of them were the same old same old. but one church i will never forget was a jewish/Christian cult like church where everyone was speaking in tongues, and calling for the end times (literally). i lost my faith a couple years ago, and became a proper atheist more recently. people are leaving the churches simply because of how dumb the whole concept is, and the people that are emotionally weak are preyed upon by religions in their weak state

This is happening on a grand scale in the religion I was in as a kid: Methodist. (I pronounce it meth-odd-ist to reflect the I'm doing this shit no matter what attitude it used to have!) About half the folk have realized that LGBT are actually people. The other half think that indeed they are really some sort of spawn of Satan. Obviously these folk can no longer break bread together.
About 2 years ago, I stepped away from my family (dad was an Evangelical pastor while I was growing up, and both parents are still devoted christians and very patriotic) I didn't know exactly why then, just that being around them scared and saddened me. It has taken a long time to really unpack everything from my religeous trauma and their christian nationalism. I am grateful for channels like this that look deeper into what is happening with politics and christianity and help me to sort out what lead to my decision to leave.

Here in Mexico, there was a law of separation from state and church. And said law prohibits the clergy to use their platform to talk about politics. Many Christians said such law is concise evidence of persecution, but ironically said law might help save Christianity from themselves here in Mexico.
I used to go to Catholic Church as a kid and although I know now that Christianity isn't true, it really was all about following the word of Jesus Christ. Now it's all about self serving ones own bigotry and ignorance and striving to hold power over others.

Politics has always been deeply entwined with the Church as it has with any other form of religion. In the civil war era churches would split over the discussion surrounding slavery, with southern churches patronized by wealthy slave owners coming out in defense of slavery. My favorite story is about an abolitionist preacher preaching about the evils of slavery in a pro slavery town. He was lynched and the children were allowed to play with his bones, with some children being observed to use his skull as a kick ball. Politics has always been a part of religion because religion is a part of the human experience. The only question we as the faithful have to answer is what kind of politics do we think should be part of the church. And lets be real. We have our choice, just as those southern churches chose to justify the activities and interests of their wealthy benefactors and just as their northern counterparts used the same texts to demand the opposite... so to do we have a choice. We can choose to reconcile and confront the evils perpetrated in the name of Christ, to make our peace with our failures and to be better. Or. Or we can decide no its in fact the children who are wrong, insist that it is they who must change as our children and grand children say "Thats nice grabdpa" and slowly wheel us into the nursing home. Swept into the dustbin of history like ancient dusty unwanted relics.

For this reason, I did extensive studies on cults. I discovered they have 3 traits. They are: 1) exclusive; out of all the billions of people on Earth, they're the only ones with the truth :2) have a secret inner circle with special privileges (greatly enabling corruption), and 3) authoritarian; you obey the leader without question ( enacting control). We are seeing a sharp decline in organizations religion in the U.S, but I wonder how much of it is countered by the adoption of other thought patterns that believe things without evidence, such as "alternative medicine", conspiracy theories, etc. I suspect the trend is still in the positive direction, but not as sharp as it is mad made out to be.
Consider also the behaviors associated with religious practice are found in secular environments. Meditation circles are just another kind of prayer group. Weddings and naming ceremonies are removed from their origins and are still practiced etc.

I think they are leaving the church, but well, they aren't really giving up their faith. Even my fundamentalist Christian parents that I barely talk to seem to have an issue with the church now.
agreed, especially in america where many big nondenominational vaguely baptist churches that hardly even preach the gospels are without a doubt the most common type of church you find. it can be hard to find churches that reflect what the bible teaches. this is also part of why the eastern orthodox and catholic churches are rising in popularity among faithful christian youths since those churches actually hold tradition and order
They'll say that people who work on Sundays are blasphemers yet that doesn't stop them from going to a restaurant for sunday brunch. By far our rudest, lowest tipping and messiest crowd of the week where I work. Its a wonder they don't get their food spit in half the time. Not that we do that but some places definitely don't have a problem with a little cross contamination.
I am a transgender women. I recently rediscovered or returned faith. I was going through hardship. I started attending an Episcopal church. For resources and community. I have been shown nothing but kindness and respect. I do feel a genuine love for people there and at the Methodist church near me. I was told recently that if christ is only for a select few, then christ is for no one. I think it goes then christ must be for everyone. I find peace solace and meditation in prayer. As well as a sense of reassurance. the church has a lgbt group and it is wonderful. I love meeting my neighbors and meeting new friends. I want to learn and do good for the people I care about somehow. I find myself looking forward to each sunday. To meet my community, to learn new things, but to also pray and to know and be glad that god loves me. Even if others would not.

I'll repeat what some may or may not already know happens here in the States - when my sister first moved down to Penn she would have been ostracized and shunned from more reliable childcare and community programs if she didn't join the local church. As a result, my neices and nephew sometimes learn there that "bad friends aren't christian" and who knows what else, if my mom wasn't such a nice person and my oldest neice so open to asking questions she wouldn't have had this kind of spite refuted by a trusted person. My sister as a recent single mother would have been left as an outsider with no accessible childcare if she didn't join at all. And I do worry about if there is an inappropriate preacher or other church member who could be left alone with any of those kids, no matter who tries to reassure me, or be defensively offended at me, that "not all christians in power abuse kids". It is still a legitimate worry after all this time after my sister joined that church. Are they pushing purity culture? Are they saying to 6 and 10 y/os that all LGBT people go to hell? Are they hitting kids who don't pay attention in sunday school still? All of this on top of whatever politics could be thrown in there, whether around the kids or not. It isn't just churches in small town Penn, you know. Just ffs, people try to say how "violent" and "horrific" mosques are towards kids while having any excuse ready for a grabby pastor they like for his politics and that will never be okay. I actually wrote. First I heard (probably before you were born) religion getting involved in politics, I felt good, they could use some. I was referring to honesty, truth, etc. What actually happened was politics took-over religion. What does the Bible tell you about lying? Gluttony? Greed? and they ignore it. I left because I realized I didn't have a good reason to believe the way I did.
This is not just a Christianity problem. I am an Indian atheist, grew up as a Hindu, I am 22 at present and have seen the rise of the Hindu right nationalists in front of my eyes and used to be an ardent supporter of them throughout my teenage years. As I matured, I started seeing exactly what these guys were doing, they didn't want to do my welfare, they didn't even care fof me or people like me, all they wanted was power for themselves and they were using these fear tactics that everyone is against us especially Muslims and western countries to make us thier sheep, thier cult followers, thier army of maniacs. As I lost my faith in all those gods (yes I used to believe those legends as actual history) I tried to convey this thing to mom, but what I got in return that you'll be depressed and lonely without faith, you have to believe but she failed to realise that I was depressed beacause of faith and all the politics it brings with it. I felt so much relief when I stopped being a Hindu. My remaining fear went away when I educated myself on the history of the world and how all the culturs evolved which made me realise that there is nothing like "the" culture, there is only "a" culture and a population constitute of different admixture of cultures, ethnicities and behaviours. All want to say to the religious people who think that being associated with some kind of politics is beneficial for your faith is that you are kidding yourself, this conservative politics is not only poisoning your religion, its also poisoning your mindset.

I've been a lifelong opponent of religion, and being from scandinavia its been difficult but as of yet not dangerous, but it's getting to the point again where this might change even here. Even when I was still a Christian, I hated going to church! Too boring and the social aspect of it gives me anxiety. Fortunately, my family rarely ever went to church. Now that I'm an atheist, I never want to go inside a church ever again.

I stopped being Christian because there came a point where basically...I understood how Jesus felt, when he entered the temple, and saw it filled with merchants.
I watched something sacred, ancient, beautiful, even, turned into just another way to make money. To control.

As a former Muslim who lives in a Muslim country, I was trying my best to be as devout of a Muslim as possible during my teenage years. However, what ultimately triggered my subsequent departure from Islam was a combination of the following: hypocrisy, bigotry & politics.
I was always appalled by the fact that most people who cared very much to project their religious identity were more concerned with hating non-conformists than actually bettering themselves. Furthermore, even those who had religious authority seemed more busy hating the others, such as myself, seeing that I'm an ace, in addition to politics, than anything else.
One other thing that always rubbed me the wrong way was everyone's tendency of disregarding the simplest yet most personal Islamic teachings such as, not stealing, not lying, loving other people and being kind to them, being kind to animals, not cheating, etc.
Ultimately, what drove me away from religion wasn't people who criticized it, but the people who defended it. I'm glad I'm done and over with it.

I’m a private care giver and I have worked as a nurse for many years. Most religious people are elderly, and they are the most anxious, fearful, obsessive people I’ve ever met. They rarely die in peace. Tomorrow I have to get up and drive in the ice and snow on a notoriously treacherous road to go pick up an elderly Catholic couple to take them to church. The woman is so anxious all the time about when church is. What if I were sick? Or there was a dangerous storm? She still anxiously expects me to take her and her husband to church. Why? Will they have to spend for time sizzling in purgatory if they miss a Sunday? It really seems that. Way. They have 7 grown children. They raised them very strict Catholic. NONE of them live in the area anymore and only one daughter ever flies home to visit. None of them are religious. Although this is very sad because religion DESTROYS families, it’s a tiny bit encouraging -MAYBE because at least we can see that their religion will die with them. For the most part. But how will their childrens’ families pass on something better? Recover from the trauma of being raised so severely? I hope they can do better!
in my experience its quite the opposite, a lot of christians have accepted that theyll die and have strong enough faith theyll go to heaven that they arent really bothered by it. my christian grandparents (still living) have openly said many times that theyre completely ready and dont want resuscitated if anything happens. theyre very calm and fine about everything. also recall a neurology documentary that featured catholic nuns who were in their 80s-90s and seemed happy and relaxed as ever, and better cognitive ability than a lot of 20-30 year olds. my mom also works in a nursing home and is around the hospice type areas a lot and from what shes told me any of the ones she knew that were christian had very peaceful deaths and again seemed very ready and accepting. the woman youre describing just seems like she has anxiety or some other sort of mental illness, possibly from the old age (early stages of dementia maybe?). that seems like a very specific personal thing unrelated to her being catholic.

If you are taught to fear god, to fear hell, to fear punishment, to hate sins, to condemn others - how would you ever be at pease with yourself? You will always keep on thinking about the gruesome hell that may await you, about all the punishment you will recieve based on the sins you may abhorr, but still commit.
These kinds of mindsets can't lead to a peaceful death, except when the one dying is a sociopath who has absolute self-confidence - but then, these types don't need religion either to die peacefully I assume.
If you are taught that you will be rewarded in death, that you will be juddged on how you lived by your morals, not whetever you attended all the ceremonies and said all the prayers - this will obviously result in a different mindset. But even here, yoou don't need religion to achieve it. It really is more about your upbringing than religion in the end - how you cope with your finite life, with death and the possibility of nothinghness.

Lets take two examples, both believe in the religion that postulates:
- if you are a good person, you will get rewarded for eterneity after death
- if you are a bad person, you will punished for all eternity
Person A has lived their life as well as they could. They have helped out people, never murdererd, and all in all had tried to be a good person. Person A is on their death bed, but seeing back towards their life, well, it was a good life. Person A is at peace
Person B has always been told to be a good person, or they would fall into eternal punishment at death. It has always been stressed. It was always the core point of any presentation, that Person B MUST be a good person. That it is integral to be one. But what is a good person? Person B asked around, and got wildly different answers. Some said that you must never sin, and once you do, must repent at once. Others say that you must attend all ceremonies, never skip them. And then there are those that define being a good person as someone who was faithful to their faith,, and not morally good. In their opinion, a good person would be someone, who converted others, a firebrand that 'saved' people by convincing them of their religion.
Person B doesn't know if they were a good person. After all, what is a good person? So, person B is anxious. They decided to follow as many of these definitions as possible, in order to not risk into falling into eternal punishment. So they attend every ceremony if possible. They memorize everything that is considered 'sin' to avoid doing such a thing - and should they, they would repent with all their heart. They were always agressively defending their religion, trying to get others to convert - but hasn't managed to do that. So, does person B consider themself a good person? It seems that some don't agree. Would their god agree or disagree? If their god would disagree, would not eternal punishment the result?
How could person B be peaceful in this situation. Their eternity is balancing on a knifes edge! Maybe it was enough, maybe not! So they will try everything to ensure they are regarded as a 'good' person. Fear. Desperation. No peace.
And yet both were adherent to the same religion. Both were 'true' believers. The only difference is how they were taught, and the definitions. For A, eternity wasn't the centerpoint, but the way they lived their life - iff their life is ggood, so will be the ensuing eternity. For B, everything in life was centered around eternity. Life was but a short stop before time infinite, something that will soon be forgotten. Life itself was unimportant, instead the central question of the judgment was its center.
Fear can be powerful. Especially if its instilled and reinforced by other persons in addition to their self. If you are taught from birth to fear, and those around you reinforce it - it will be hard to break from it, ESPECIALLY if you don't break from the others as well. As long as you remain with those that reinforce your fears, they will return. Don't discoount the power it can have. The trauma it can generate. And how easily it can consume a young mind that is still malleable.

There was a good bit of resistance to the rise of the religious right from theologians at the time. They argued that the separation of church and state wasn't just to protect citizens from the church, but also to keep the church sacred. Being a bit player in worldly affairs made it more vulnerable to taking the wrong side than it empowered it to influence things.
And here we stand now. I'm pretty sure they were right.
Yet, you and others just calling yourselves Christian indicates that you are not heretic to their morals. If you are, you should change label to Gnostic Christian and be a loyal heretic and try to show your better thinking.

You can't separate politics and religion. Both make rules about life in a society which can conflict. The concept of a separate state and religion only exists in European culture which fought in the Protestant wars. The minor differences between denominations isn't worth fighting deadly wars over.

I left, too, didn't take me but a matter of months even though I did meet some very nice well meaning people. I miss them but what can I do? My step dad was with them for about 15 years, possibly more, but he moved from the U. S. to Australia. They don't have enough understanding of the unfortunate, the main population of them, and they are very Tea Party Right Winged in politics, normally, a few aren't... They push push and push people, even when they are top grade and a lot of them shame others and the temple requirements are outlandish! It's a very worldly $ driven top dog religion!
They just built one of their temples where I live that gloom over my city. Its's hideous to look at.
I am grateful I come from a Congregationalist background where the focus of sermons was always on acceptance, love for your neighbor, and community. Even as an agnostic I still enjoy going because of the kindness and community found there. Truly a contrast from the hateful brand of Christianity I have so often seen elsewhere.

One thing rather humorous was that the biggest opponents of gays bashers were my local holy men. They say making gays a joke was as tasteless as making jokes about the poor, the sick, and the stupid.
But on what basis? I have a catholic background so I can tell you that our focus was to raise a person in a holistic way: heart as well as brain. It was Protestantism that broke from the long scholastic tradition and followed a more gnostic, more Neoplatonist paradigm which to describe it shortly prosecuted REASON and emphasized emotions. But then faith becomes just a matter of whim, feeling, no reasoning, no arguments. And then, worse things happen.
My parents have been taken by this horrid version of Christianity. I had to cut them out of my life entirely. Full NC. It broke my heart every time I talked to my mother, and my dad just wouldn't talk to me at all anyhow.

This did not shake my faith in God but in the world and the people in it. Narrow is the path because of many of the reasons he discussed. Its important to have a relationship with God put your faith and trust in him. Follow him not church or religion. People have tainted and twisted the truth to fit them and weaponized christianity as a tool in many ways but if you have a relationship with him you have the fruits of the spirit and you are in the world but not a part of it you will see the truth and the path to follow. God is real and can not be pushed by people. If you reach out God will reach out. Not mans place but Gods. We plant the seed and show others how to reach out and God is in charge of the rest on his timing and in his way. I love you all and I hope you find the truth. As a former Christian. You hit the nail on the head. My moment that made me lose faith after years growing up in my local church. Taking pride in the fact that America has a separation of church and state. Suddenly takes a stance one day against gay marriage. This was in the mid 2000’s. The rest of my years as a Christian was on autopilot until I turned 18. After watching the kids in my age group. Failing to understand questioning aspects of the faith critically and just nodding their heads to look good in front of the youth pastors. But gossiping and talking down about people from school in the youth house. Many talked bad about friends of mine, when they were acting all chummy at school. Earlier that day.

I find anarchism and Christianity to be very compatible in my own faith. Many people who like to extol the virtues of the state based on Romans 13 overlook the fact that the Church described in Romans 12 is its antithesis. Not to mention Jesus gives instruction to His disciples not to use honorific titles, that money is an abomination, and to not concern ourselves with material possessions. If the love of money is the root of all evil, then I think "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" and "there is no ethical consumption under capitalism" may be analogous sentiments.

In one of my visitations to hell, Jesus showed me a person who was a Christian (Jesus said “he was a Christian like you”). But the guy unfortunately started sleeping around (1 cor 6:9). He died middle aged and went to hell forever it was dark but Jesus lit up the area, he asked Jesus for another chance but unfortunately it was too late for him, Pretty sad, Repent and ask Jesus to help you with your struggles (James 4:7)

I grew up christian.
Left partly after finding out I'm gay, and yes it was a discovery because for a long time it was an actual blind spot, didn't even know it was an option because it was covered so thoroughly.
But also partly left because our pastor was asking questions, and I realized everyone was answering with the same kind of language, the same kind of answers, and when he asked them what that meant without using the church's preprogrammed responses no one could answer.
I don't know if he was questioning his faith, or if he just wanted to dig through the surface nonsense and teach people to be Christians the way we were always told to be but never understood.
Every once in a while I question myself. Did I make the right choice to leave? What if I'm wrong? I look at the things I believe and ask myself if I'm the bad guy.
Every time I'm glad I left christianity, though sometimes I do make note of some very cruel and twisted beliefs I have.
And I try to be careful about who I am, and who I am becoming, every day. It's a struggle.
But that's how I know this path is better than the one I was on.
The scariest christians are the ones who never question their beliefs.
thats a very interesting perspective thank you for sharing it. i do agree that as a christian its very important to question your faith, as thats the one of the main things that can truly make it stronger. its kinda like a 'what doesnt kill you makes you stronger' type situation, and for some people it ends up killing their faith which i do find sad but can see why it happens. also id imagine your pastor was trying to show everyone how little they really know and how they need to actually get in touch with God and His word the way that christians are supposed to instead of just knowing a few bible verses and giving the same copy paste response on everything. tbh even being a christian (so naturally id want others to also be christian), i prefer seeing others who are agnostic/atheist who constantly questions themselves and are actually looking for the truth than those who claim to be christian just because they were born into it and never questioned it. as far as i know i would still believe/know Jesus to be the truth in my spirit but im never going to act as if in my mind i can truly KNOW what the answer is. nobody can, and if anybody could truly 100% prove any questions about things like the afterlife or the creation of the universe everybody wouldve been sided with them and there would be no speculation or debates on the topic in the first place. honestly i find it very dumb that any theist or atheist tries to argue that they know theyre right, especially atheists who are so so convinced theyre right although thats probly js bias i have which i do try to work on. i try to keep an open mind but honestly most atheist channels who speak on the subject just lack any understanding of christianity or the bible (for example this guy, genetically modified skeptic, etc) ive never heard anything really convincing. they do seem to know about the bible and have done some studying on it generally but that doesnt really mean anything to me. and while i understand everybody has their biases i just dont feel i can trust a strongly atheistic, openly christian-hating person on their views on christianity cause theyll just try to frame everything super negatively. the only truly neutral accounts ive been able to find only go super surface level or stick to more historic and fact based areas (which i get it but yk). idk if i mentioned already or not since im not rereading over this big ol yap session but if you are interested possibly in looking into christianity again i could try my best to help and also there are a lot of resources out there on youtube and stuff but the main thing in my opinion is actually having conversations w christians, maybe by checking out like a bible study group for example like swinging by one session as a guest. anyways though (if you even read through all this lol) have a wonderful day!

I think the god I believed in would rather have someone turn away from the belief than try to fake it or be a hypocrite.
In the bible there is the parable of the prodigal son.
There is the story of Saul who hated Christians, and was approached by an angel.
But beyond that, a god that is willing to mislead his followers as was done in the binding of Isaac story, or several others, could very well have allowed the Bible to be twisted as a test.
In the end, if there is a god, what we deserve is between each of us and that god. I could not follow a cruel one no matter what they threatened, and I would hope a kind one would understand why I would turn away from that faith.

I am European, I'm born in 1955 and went to a catholic school, my parents were believers, so I learned to be a good boy, polite, helping, not judgemental, honest...not much in dogma, I had no obligation to go to the church. I was not so much in that "God" thing, more the "Christ" thing.I started to have some questions, like every week we had to confess or sins and had then to say some prayers and were then freed of our sins. On my 12 years, I asked the Father teaching religion why the christian religion was the only truth one, the answer I had was to be banned from the class for the entire school year. 2 years later I went to a ashram and became Sikh and Buddhist. The problems I have with Christianity, I can not understand why a "God" should need to be worshiped. The people representing that "God" are: liars, hypocrites,cheaters...but that's not a problem, confession clean you. A little to easy in my opinion. And I never grasped the meaning of "sin", wtf is a sin, I can do bad, stupid, wrong things for which I take responsibility...so now I'm an Atheist, normally I don't start talking religion.

are just born into it and cluelessly and blindly follow. i do definitely get what you mean. however i would be cautious of SOME of the atheists who seem to know a lot about christianity, for example that youtube channel "genetically modified skeptic" twists cherry picked bible verses so far from their original meaning i find it crazy anyone believes him on anything, yet a lot do. although many supposed christians do similar things so i cant really judge too much. anyways though imma just keep it 100 real quick no matter what arguments or historical evidence or whatever that could suggest christianitys the truth you see, none of it will ever be an 100% certain guarantee so if thats what you feel you would need to believe then i cant really be of any help. but the main way i tend to think about it (although its not necessarily a super logical or scientific approach) as someone going into biology and possibly veterinary sciences or med school i find the complexities and mysteries of human bodys just doesnt feel possible to have happened randomly by chance. in a way nothing really does like when i look out into the night sky or into a forest or really any place with life it just feels like a creator had made it to be the way it is. on a less emotional and more logical note though, i also (while i have looked a lot into it) cant really get behind abiogenesis (idea that life came from nonlife, by means of random chance). although things like viruses that are kinda on the verge of being considered living or not do get me thinking about those sort of possibilities but idk i js cant really get behind it. also youve probly heard it before and heard arguments from both sides regarding it but i do generally agree with the fine-tuning argument. the other ways generally to look at it is to say that theres infinite universes and life just happened to come about in this one because by chance it ended up being the perfect one, but i find that still doesnt have any answer as to where those infinite universes came from and theres just as little proof of the idea of a multiverse as there is proof of a god and to me a god feels a lot more likely. and also again this next part is gonna be very subjective and emotion based but try to stick with me if you can. when i enter christian churches like the big cathedral type ones i just feel a sort of holy presence that i dont feel anywhere else. also personal experiences while again not very scientific and cant be proven to be true play a big role for me, namely the time when my grandma had her firstborn son (my uncle) asleep up in the attic of their farmhouse and she heard a knock on the door. she says she didnt even open the door yet and heard a voice telling her that there was a fire in her attic and to get her baby out. she ran upstairs and got him out safely and then they put the fire out before it spread too far. she swears by everything that it was an angel that day, as after she went back down to thank her she opened the door to find nobody in sight, keep in mind this was a farmhouse with big open flat fields surrounding it so not much room to hide and would take a while to run off. and to be honest if her recollection of the story is true i dont see how that couldve been just any person because they couldnt have possibly known she had a baby up there. thats just one story and ive heard many. also the old testament prophecies fulfilled by jesus to me shows enough proof that of the abrahamic religions christianity is by far the most likely to be true as judaism denies jesus and islam i dont even wanna get into but i have some issues with it for sure. so overall generally i just find it a lot more likely that there is some god out there, and of the major religions i find christianity seems the most likely. i havent really looked much into things like buddhism or hinduism but from the limited understanding i have it feels like hinduism really is just a reflection of what indian culture was/is like and that buddhism isnt so much a religion as it is a way of life or a philosophy, which i do make distinctions between since i dont really get calling atheist philosophies 'religions'. so to me i do really believe that christ is the absolute truth, but i do still try to keep an open mind for other possibilities since there isnt necessarily a way to KNOW and it has a lot to do w faith. also in terms of online resources honestly it can be hard to find good ones but i think it can be interesting to watch debates on the topic, that way whether you agree or disagree with either side you still hear both and can pick out the good parts of both of their arguments. also the channel 'redeemed zoomer' explains christianity related stuff in a very very simple and easy to digest way, but some of his bias towards his own denomination (presbyterian) can be noticed a decent bit in his videos. generally though i think one of the best ways to learn stuff on the topic is by talking with people in real life (pastors/priests, christian friends, etc), although this can be even more of a struggle since you cant always tell at first who believes what and if its for the right reasons. i would say more stuff but this has gotten way too long lol and im way behind on my schoolwork i should be doing right now so imma end it here, thank you so much for reading all this if you did or even skimming through and sorry i couldnt provide many specific resources or super super solid arguments but for the limited amount of time to write this i did kinda try anyways, A little further along in my own journey but I’m right there with you.
It’s worth pointing out that there might be times where you’re still afraid of god. Anyone who was made to believe that there was a hateful god that punished anyone who wasn’t a part of the religion will have to spend some time adjusting to not believing that anymore. Eventually your brain will forget to be afraid and you’ll be free.

Seeing 2 different 2000+ member churches near me, tells me that there are a lot of churches way below that level of people. Plus I know many people that have left the small churches for the big churches. Which makes me worried that it’s just church redistribution

It isn't JUST redistribution. A lot of people at least leave all forms of organized congregation, regardless of size.
And a lot of this redistribution is actually a continuation of the extreme balkanization of christian denominations in the USA, where any difference in opinion or exegesis leads to a schism and two new churches going on... just with these churches being "non denominational" or "independent", leading many people away from bigger groups like baptists, adventists etc... away from some form of compromise interpretation of christianity that is open for many people towards more fundamentalist views that are suited for far less people even if they can aggregate more people in ONE PLACE, they will never outgrow a group of churches that together make up tens of millions of believers.under one coordinated doctrine. Joel Osteen may have space for 20k people in one event and all his branches have what? 120,000 people nominally members of his brand of church (expect maybe 1/3 to regularly go to events)... but 120k is not the 50 millions of the major baptist alliances or the 15.6 million of Methodists and Pentecostals...

These are the same type of people that say that without religion, you can never mourn the ones that have been lost. Well, let me tell those people something. I've been an atheist for nearly 30 years and have mourned quite a few people in my family that are no longer around anymore. The most recent example would be when my father lost his fight with pancreatic cancer over four months ago. Watching him deteriorate before his final days was the most painful experience in my life. He actually died as I sat next to him while he laid on his hospice bed. I'm still mentally recovering from his passing and I don't know when I will fully recover. I miss him everyday and even cry from time to time. As long as I'm alive, my memories of him will live on and that's all that matters.
Even after going through all of what I just mentioned, I'm still an atheist because I know that what these people try to tell you is BS and insulting and that there is more to this world and the universe on a scientific level than what these fools tell you.

Today I was chatting with an older man in his 60s. He works at the grocery store here in the eastern Sierra mountains California. And he asked me if I knew how the mountains formed. I can't help but think about the difference between the small neighborhood church that my paternal grandparents and my father attended and the megachurches that dominate the city I currently live in (not the one where I or my father grew up). My paternal grandparents, while far from perfect people, knew what it was to grow up poor, and to struggle, and they were, as a result, kind and generous, and their religion (as well as the church that they chose) reflected that. While I would grow up to be an atheist, I was never unnerved by their church.
My mother's family was always better off, and while my mother ended up as a pretty good person, her father was absolutely the sort of person always moving towards more authoritarianism and a strong desire to use his religious identity as a way of justifying his own bad behavior and his desire to control others who were, arguably, actually behaving in a far more Christian way than he was.
I am grateful that my paternal grandparents didn't live to see the rise of Trump (who they always considered a shameless charlatan, from his rise in prominence during the 1980s) as I think it would have broken their hearts to see the public face of Christianity orient itself towards his hateful politics. I am also glad that my maternal grandfather didn't live to see it because it would have made him feel vindicated and righteous in his bad behavior.

our family went to a couple churches when i was younger, and most of them were the same old same old. but one church i will never forget was a jewish/Christian cult like church where everyone was speaking in tongues, and calling for the end times (literally). i lost my faith a couple years ago, and became a proper atheist more recently. people are leaving the churches simply because of how dumb the whole concept is, and the people that are emotionally weak are preyed upon by religions in their weak state

This is happening on a grand scale in the religion I was in as a kid: Methodist. (I pronounce it meth-odd-ist to reflect the I'm doing this shit no matter what attitude it used to have!) About 2 years ago, I stepped away from my family (dad was an Evangelical pastor while I was growing up, and both parents are still devoted christians and very patriotic) I didn't know exactly why then, just that being around them scared and saddened me. It has taken a long time to really unpack everything from my religeous trauma and their christian nationalism. I am grateful for channels like this that look deeper into what is happening with politics and christianity and help me to sort out what lead to my decision to leave.

Here in Mexico, there was a law of separation from state and church. And said law prohibits the clergy to use their platform to talk about politics. Many Christians said such law is concise evidence of persecution, but ironically said law might help save Christianity from themselves here in Mexico.
I used to go to Catholic Church as a kid and although I know now that Christianity isn't true, it really was all about following the word of Jesus Christ. Now it's all about self serving ones own bigotry and ignorance and striving to hold power over others.

I was in a cult once, putting my life in danger. Then,6 years later, I was forced to sit helpless while my niece dropped out of high school to join a cult.
For this reason, I did extensive studies on cults. I discovered they have 3 traits. They are: 1) exclusive; out of all the billions of people on Earth, they're the only ones with the truth :2) have a secret inner circle with special privileges (greatly enabling corruption), and 3) authoritarian; you obey the leader without question ( enacting control). Christianity fits this description perfectly.

We are seeing a sharp decline in organizations religion in the U.S, but I wonder how much of it is countered by the adoption of other thought patterns that believe things without evidence, such as "alternative medicine", conspiracy theories, etc. I suspect the trend is still in the positive direction, but not as sharp as it is mad made out to be.
Consider also the behaviors associated with religious practice are found in secular environments. Meditation circles are just another kind of prayer group. Weddings and naming ceremonies are removed from their origins and are still practiced etc.

The pharaoh “was a god” therefore the population had to revere and obey him. c. I am a being of 'light', 'if' my current theory of everything is correct whereby the 'gem' photon is the energy unit of this universe that makes up everything in this universe, including space, time and numbers. (Currently dependent upon the results of my gravity test).
d. "I" do not even actually exist but eternally existent space time exists as me, currently in the forms as above.
* I exist and yet "I" simultaneously do not exist, dependent upon perspective. But yet, do "I" not truly exist in absolute truth reality as only eternally existent space time exists as all things in absolute truth reality?
* "I" can mentally change between perspectives thereby experiencing existence from those various perspectives. "My" mind continues to expand, but is it truly 'my' mind that is expanding or is it eternally existent space time's mind that is expanding? In absolute truth reality, it would seem to be the later.
* 'To Be or Not To Be'. I am both, 'I Am and I Am Not.' But I Am Not it appears more than I Am.
* Consider also: If asked the general question, 'What do you know?'. My current answer would be, 'Not much compared to all that can be known.' (I Am Not, More than I Am). It's humbling.
* Is it truly any wonder that the flow of energy in the universe affects species? We are the universe experiencing itself.
* Question: If 'I' never actually existed in the first place, how could 'I' ever die?

They'll say that people who work on Sundays are blasphemers yet that doesn't stop them from going to a restaurant for sunday brunch. By far our rudest, lowest tipping and messiest crowd of the week where I work. Its a wonder they don't get their food spit in half the time. Not that we do that but some places definitely don't have a problem with a little cross contamination.

I am a transgender women. I recently rediscovered or returned faith. I was going through hardship. I started attending an Episcopal church. For resources and community. I have been shown nothing but kindness and respect. I do feel a genuine love for people there and at the Methodist church near me.
I was told recently that if christ is only for a select few, then christ is for no one. I think it goes then christ must be for everyone. I find peace solace and meditation in prayer. As well as a sense of reassurance. the church has a lgbt group and it is wonderful. I love meeting my neighbors and meeting new friends. I want to learn and do good for the people I care about somehow.
I find myself looking forward to each sunday. To meet my community, to learn new things, but to also pray and to know and be glad that god loves me. Even if others would not.

I'll repeat what some may or may not already know happens here in the States - when my sister first moved down to Penn she would have been ostracized and shunned from more reliable childcare and community programs if she didn't join the local church. As a result, my neices and nephew sometimes learn there that "bad friends aren't christian" and who knows what else, if my mom wasn't such a nice person and my oldest neice so open to asking questions she wouldn't have had this kind of spite refuted by a trusted person. My sister as a recent single mother would have been left as an outsider with no accessible childcare if she didn't join at all. And I do worry about if there is an inappropriate preacher or other church member who could be left alone with any of those kids, no matter who tries to reassure me, or be defensively offended at me, that "not all christians in power abuse kids". It is still a legitimate worry after all this time after my sister joined that church. Are they pushing purity culture? Are they saying to 6 and 10 y/os that all LGBT people go to hell? Are they hitting kids who don't pay attention in sunday school still? All of this on top of whatever politics could be thrown in there, whether around the kids or not. It isn't just churches in small town Penn, you know. Just ffs, people try to say how "violent" and "horrific" mosques are towards kids while having any excuse ready for a grabby pastor they like for his politics and that will never be okay. Any religious institution who advocates for child marriage or moves around child abusers (not always christians I know) shouldn't be trusted on whatever verse they've cherry picked this week to justify themselves - just on a basic level. Let alone other exploitation of their communities and polarization that's lead to people baptizing gilded assaust rifles (remember that insanity?) None of it is okay. Or ever will be.
Like christians are not worshipping their own identity.
