  • Uh-Omens! We've got a weird one today everybody. Sonic Omens has quickly become a very controversial fan game even though it looks amazing at first sight. But, are looks enough to save an entire game from the chopping block??

Gotta love the “Game development is hard guys, let them profit off of a ip they don’t own” when it’s a fan-game, but these people throw a fit and harass devs when a Sonic game isn’t a 10/10.
Fangames can be critiqued too you babies, Omens ain’t the second coming of christ, sheesh.

    • @weremickey
      @weremickey 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I agree with you, but I still think fan creators should be able to profit off of the IP. Doesn't mean what Omens did is right though, and you are correct.

    • @marinomele4575

      Uhm, weak argument...
People are condescending with fangames because they're NOT professionals who get paid to fully work on it every day of the week.
Fans usually develop something in their free time, when they're not at work.
Take Cyberpunk 2077 this guy compares Sonic Omen to - Cyberpunk production costed 313 Million dollars.
      There's NOTHING to compare here.
Fangames can be criticized as well, of course, but when you compare them to full-fledged triple-A games you're indirectly admitting it's so good there's nothing else to compare them to.
Even when you're so biased due to all the drama surrounding it. And this is indeed one of those instances.
The profit thing is just a non argument.
Far artists profit everyday from IP they don't own - not donations but straight-up selling their art. Which I think is fine.
But then we need to acknowledge that a fangame IS indeed fanart, only on an infinitely bigger scale.
(Also it's not like they were selling this game, it's free. That would be bad. But they only asked for donations.)

The footage at 0:57 is from the Sonic content creator Blue Vivacity. It's also footage of Sonic Infinity+, an expansion on the original Sonic Infinity Engine. Sonic Omens uses a more Vanilla version of the Sonic Infinity Engine, not the Sonic Infinity+ expansion that I myself spearhead. Some member of my team and I are also in the credits for Omens for 'donated work' and by donated work, I mean they took some assets from our expansion (which they are allowed to do as Sonic Infinity+ is open source) and nothing else. My team and I (who have been working on Infinity+ for the past 2 years) have no association with Sonic Omens or it's development whatsoever.
Side note: our Infinity+ framework actually has a lot of options to fix some of the issues you where having. For example we have the option for creators to decide whether or not they want the Homing Attack to track from the Camera or from Sonic in their fangame. There are also a lot of spline tools we have premade for creators to use in order to add automation to level segments as they please (these spline tools actually originate from Dash Engine but have been heavily modified since).
Friendly tip: I actually prefer and suggest people use Keyboard and Mouse when playing both Vanilla Infinity Engine and Infinity+ fangames. Playing Infinity fangames as if they where FPS platformers actually allows for much higher precision when moving at high speeds than controller does as allowing a mouse controlled camera to dictate direction rather than a joystick controlling movement makes things much easier to control when moving faster. It also improves the Homing Attack and makes it more versatile since you have quick and precise control of the camera at all times with the mouse. However we are trying to make Infinity+ more controller friendly as a lot of people do prefer to play with controller.

@@ShempOfficial Of course. I mainly wanted to get the point across that visuals aside, our work on Infinity+ isn't really comparable to that of what was done in Omens. Infinity+ at this point as very much become it's own thing separate from the build of Infinity Engine that Omens uses.
I'll also gladly try my best to dispel any other confusing things about Infinity if ever needed.

Technically opening a patreon in relation to a game isn't exactly profiting off of it. That's how most fanartists get away with technically making money without being directly profited.
The only criteria that's usually acknowledged when specifically talking about profiting of off IPs, is whether or not you had to buy the product. They're not literally selling the game, and paying them to make the game isn't the same as you buying it. It's more like a commission.

Fan-art isn't the same as a fan-game that's an unfair comparison especially in regards to Sonic which is mainly a video game franchise. You don't see Patreons of Davinci fan-art do you? Any amount of money made, whether it's to help make it, polish it, re-tweak, etc. involves using an IP with an already established character in video games in which they do not own the rights. That is not a good thing for they are not Sega, nor are they Sonic Team, so they should NOT be getting paid or some sort of commission to make a Sonic game because news flash, they don't own him.

I opened the game and after 5 minutes. I thought this game was great because it was. And I was going crazy thinking about its potential. It could have been like a hat in time. Even better, even better. I don't know anything about your situation, but I think you should find some friends to improve the game. I just played the game for the first time today and I can't wait for updates. But it has some shortcomings. It has to be a wall jump. because we want to be free and feel free as we roam around. I think we should be able to go back instantly when running fast. When we left click on the mouse, the character attacks and throws a sound wave. He doesn't fit this character at all, it makes him look like he's shouting or getting angry. I don't know what could replace the sound wave, but I have a few ideas. he can shoot lasers from his eyes.(Star vs. the Forces of Evil- cute little dogs were shooting lasers from their eyes) Or let the little friend next to us shoot. His story wasn't very good. Other than that, the game was really great. It has a lot of potential and that excites me. When I sit in front of the computer 4 years later, I want to play your game. Don't give up because we have your back.

I think alot of these points are great for the devs to find areas for improvement, but it's a bit harsh considering it's a small team doing a fan game. Most Sonic games have a a team 10X larger to weed out alot of these issues, even though I agree that the problems you've pointed out. Since SEGA knows about it and its popularity, I wouldn't be surprised if they just buy it and use it as a basis for an official game eventually, like a 3D version of what happened with Mania. I think it's a great game by fangame standards, but if its ever to be considered more (i.e. for profit or purchased by SEGA) it will have a way biger standard to live up to.

I quite like harsh criticism, as it can very clearly tell a creator how they can improve their creations, or at the very least let them know what their audience is thinking. That being said, your section in this video about money seemed very odd to me, especially when you claim that your bar of quality (and thus the harsh-ness of your criticism) hinges on said money. Profiting off of the Sonic IP has been incredibly common within the Sonic fandom for many years, so it seems really weird that this is suddenly an issue, seemingly with and only with Sonic Omens. Plenty of fan artists sell commissions of Sonic art (sometimes only Sonic art) and make money off of their Sonic art posted on their patreons and merch stores, but they don't own the Sonic IP. Some fan animators post Sonic animations (sometimes only Sonic animations) on TH-cam and make money through channel memberships or accept funding for the production of said Sonic animations through their patreons, sometimes earning thousands of dollars every month, but they don't own the Sonic IP. To use your line of reasoning: indirectly or not, many unofficial Sonic art pieces and animations receive funding, which is illegal. But again, it seems like this issue is only brought up when Ouroboros makes money through these exact same methods. The controversy around Omens in this regard reeks of a double standard, and it's telling how you allowed this double standard to affect your feedback on this demo.

I feel like most of the people that are praising this game as the best Sonic Fan Game ever made probably only played the first 3 levels and then called it quits, because everything after Wellspring, Chao Garden, and Area 99 is absolute trash.
Not to mention the Patreon thing is really bad for Sonic Fan Games. If they continue this project, there better not be more builds locked behind Patreon.

I can agree with everything but the Patreon stuff. Yes, money are involved into development and the studio has a Patreon page which is related to Sonic Omens. But here's the thing. Sonic Omens is in the gray zone as Katie Chrzanowsky said. If the game has issues, Sega will deal with them personally. Plus as one of the devs said, during the first Patreon war Sega employee checked what are they doing and everything was fine, and the Patreon page is the studio's page, money go to their other projects, and the game is still free.
But the fact that people donate to the unprofessional devs that aren't even Sonic fans (except for BOLT) is just funny.

Seems more like clever monetization. Hide the profits on the company page to kill suspicion and give the impression that more than 1 project is in development. Katie basically left it up to the fans to get rid of those bad apples and if they can't (which they kinda did) , then Sega will step in.

When it comes to Omens, I'm always amazed that people can't stop talking about Patreon and money. Sponsoring development and sending donations is not the same as demanding money for a game. For some reason, everyone is okay with the fact that people draw sega characters, make animations and models for money, but when it comes to voluntary donations to developers, everyone shouts about how they make money from it. In this case, all bloggers who make content about games need to close their links for collecting donations, since you are profiting from this. I’m really surprised that in the West people don’t understand how it actually works and why Sega never closed Omens, although their people came to Ouroboros to check the patreon.
None of you want to support the developers of the fan games you play, but when it comes to criticism, you run very first, dropping feces.

I mostly got to disagree with this review.
My biggest gripe with almost every modern sonic game released after the sonic adventure series is that it's all on rails sections with very, very forgiving mechanics.
I don't remember the last time a boss fight in sonic actually gave me a challenge since I was playing sonic 3 & Knuckles.
@6:47 you got to wait and do platforming? how is this a critique? I miss platforming in sonic and reviews like this is why it's gone.
, and this engine does seem to handle it very well, your jumps land where you intend them too.
This game has a lot of issue's, but this review is way to harsh like it's a payed AAA product.
I think this game has fantastic idea's like rather then drowing you find another path trough the level, and you have a moody start in your room before you blast off. It's sad to focus this much on the negatives.
I also have to say this, this review comes across as one of those video game journalists like the one from cuphead where the review doesn't really know how to play the game and doesn't want a challenge to overcome. (like with the tails flying section, it really wasn't that bad)
Personally I think that Omen is more memorable then most of the 3D sonic Games i've played in the last decade. for better or for worse.
