here is something else everybody who don't know, Charles was the out front person that helped save Billy Higgins life when he needed a transplant the first & 2nd time. A good brother who don't look for headlines, just helping to keep the legacy alive by staying in jazz after a long hiatus. a real unsung player too
two absolute monsters of subtlety. the way they ride those moments with their ears so wide open. billy higgins' passing was a huge loss for humanity. but, here and in so many touches to skin and metal he teaches us how to be honest, how to pour out just enough and how to scoop up just enough to make the oceans of the heart right. seeing this is blessing, friends.
mr. billy higgins. always a bright light. smilin' billy. when he'd walk through leimert park he'd bring the light. show up at the world stage any time of day or nite and he'd play. one time i was playing alto-clarinet at the world stage by myself for several hours. then billy walked in and we played a duet for about 20 minutes. man, listen: the feeling. this cat just fills up with warmth the support, love and encouragement. really he is an embodiment of joy.
Ahhhhhhhhh Billy... still miss you... 4am 5th St Dicks your acoustic guitar, Brazilian music & my poetry... it's times like that... like this video... that are recorded best & sometimes only, by the heart... thank you for the video... when my grandson bangs on stuff, I hear your voice... & I hand him percussion toys... thank God for you, BillyHiggins... love you & miss you...."turn up the music" !!! xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo
This was sooo cool. I love this video. I seen Billy back in 96. Some place he had young drummers come up and play. In la of course. I even had to go up and play. Lots of pressure! It was sort of like a drum dedication to Tony Williams at the time due to the passing of Tony. Then when everyone got there turn, Billy came on, started with one of those hand drums, looked like a tambourine, but no jingles or anything like that. Then he went on to the drum kit. This whole thing was killer! What a guy
I saw Billy many times and as a 10 year resident of Leimert Park, I had the privilege of seeing him in the Village from time to time. He was at the end of his life here, but look at the joy and the power of his playing. He will always be my favorite jazz drummer, on the jazz drummer mount rushmore for all time. Saw Charles Lloyd too, not a Coltrane, Dolphy, Rollins, Pharoah Sanders, Athur Blythe or Jackie McClean...yet one of the premier players of his generation. Lovely, lovely stuff! Thank you Charles, and RIP and God keep you Billy Higgins!
Danielle speaks of the musical bond. . .reminded me of the first time I saw Charles playing at Yoshi's in Oakland. Must have been shortly after Billy's death; Charles spoke of Billy and cried and spoke and cried and rambled. This is a precious video recording.
Wow, two crazy old men with wild powers. That ending is fantastic. "Hey, remember that!" "I got it." The beauty of improvisation. The bristling concentration. Great stuff.
This looks like it was recorded at the World Stage, a non-profit store front performance and teaching space in Los Angeles that Billy founded. Billy was one cool cat, that's for sure. Thanks for posting.
nice, i like it. higgins is one of my favourits too. he is the kind of drummer tha can drag and never stops feelin good, and he always plays for the music. listen to the record john scofiel ´works for me´ it´s so great
sorry to be so slow in replying to your question. This is available in a documentary DVD, HOME about the making of Which Way Is East - the last recording that Charles and Billy made together. If you go to the Charles Lloyd web site ( address cannot be posted here, but try the obvious web address for charles lloyd - you can email the info address and find out how to order it.
@bomberbadj - could be any of 4 (maybe more) Neumann mics -- the U-67, U-87, U-87Ai (new version of U-87), or M269 ... all look alike except for badge color (not visible). I used to sell mics professionally. All are great mics.
Looks like "The World Stage", located in Leimert Park in Los Angeles. My friend Mr. Higgins opened it and brought lots of his friends there to play, at $5 bucks a head it had to be for the benefit of the people!
1985-The Willow Jazz Club Somerville, MA. Alan Dawson lent Billy a Remo pre-tuned drumset- it looked like a toy! John Lockwood-Bass, John Medeski-Piano, the Holiday brothers who were teenagers, on horns. NBC was filming it. I sat right next to Billy all night-his playing was so quiet, but burning and telepathic. The club owner asked if we wanted them to keep playing after hours. Everyone cheered! The NBC guy turned off his camera and they played till 3:30-4:00 in the morning.
Yeah, spring for the whole DVD, it's worth it. And the CD 'Which Way Is East' too. By the way, this was all done in Lloyd's home, and the video was shot by his wife.
I guess you could contact NBC Nightly News archives. It was on a day or two later when they featured Christopher Holiday, then a 14 year old sax prodigy who sounded like Charlie Parker. I caught the tale end of the program with Billy Higgins smiling, and swinging away. Or maybe you could could contact Christopher Holiday. Anyway, I'm sure it exists somewhere...
I love this but I am having trouble understanding it. I know it's free but I am trying to comprehend the relationship and know what is going on with one another. I know they are engaging in a relation but it's hard to see where it is going and where it is ending up. HELP
tutti quelli che vogliono suonare la batteria dovrebbero (obbligatoriamente) studiare per 100 anni questo video..... altrimenti non vi DOVETE definire BATTERISTI!
I would be outside the World Stage selling fruit in-between the sets, and all because 'Abdullah Kareem (Billy Higgins) befriended me when I was new to Islam!Yes he was under-valued, but not to me!!!
Stop! you embarrassing your self. Charles would be the first to say the same. he is inflenced heavily by trane as many were of his era. I have seen lloyd since he was in cannonball' & Chico Hamilton's group, I was a budding 13 year old sax player in LA. he use to teach at Gompers jr high in Watts, went to USC for his masters degree. by 1966 Lloyd was into his own group and never looked back.
So What if you lived in a person's neighborhood, it doesn't make you a expert on Jazz. are you a musician? do you know music?? You can't hide behind a blanket statement as , Lloyd would wipe the floor with Trane. Trane is dead but they're still trying to figure out some of his innovative approches to improvisation. where is your proof, or theory. sounds like you still haven't grown up. I only mention about Lloyd's humanitarian character and you say i'm still in the 60s??? break it down Betbowt!!
here is something else everybody who don't know, Charles was the out front person that helped save Billy Higgins life when he needed a transplant the first & 2nd time. That's right, Bob. Nothing has changed in 14 plus years since your post. Charles is Lloyd. Amazing creativity, only few in the Jazz scene know, IMHO.
Billy Higgins was a true Master. In so many ways!!!!
Billy had one of the greatest touches on the drums ever!!! Incredible sound he got!!
I used to see Billy Higgins all the in NYC in the 90s. It seemed like he was on every gig. I wish to god I appreciated him then as much as I do now.

Supreme blessings

I miss Billy a great deal.
We would play duets late nights at the world stage , but mostly talk about life .
Rest easy Master Higgins
This is one of the beautiful things on the internet, I think.

The World Stage
Watching Charles here shows us why he is one of the coolest cats to ever blow! I had to watch more than once to really appreciate their synergy.

billy h. already very sick, and playing as a king. charles l., another king. a lesson, an inspiration... thank you, man, very much.
Billy Higgins is such a beautiful musician. Listening to Higgins explains why Charles Lloyd appreciates Eric Harland
Wonderful!
Amazing, simple the best of the best

Really nice how Billy imitated and remembered that line starting at 7:12
ogni volta che penso ad un BATTERISTA io non posso fare a meno di pensare a BILLY ... un MUSICISTA ASSOLUTO! a best friend of mine.....
Your love of music shines thru 💐🌾
They're both so very relaxed. I love the way that Billy Higgins and Charles Lloyd play individually and together!
Fantastic, as an alto player it's inspiring to hear the tenor giant on the smaller horn. Reminds me of Ornette.
yes a bit Ornette a bit Konitz but definitely himself
Beautiful stuff. Never get enough of either of these guys.
Caught Charles solo years ago at Grace Cathedral, I believe. Just magic!
jazz can sound so fresh
this is a great video
this is so massive, hearing this changed my life and made me understand why i make what i do.
I just recently discovered Charles Lloyd and I find that his music is so imaginative and most interesting . Thank you for sharing this video .
He was a far greater person , and mentor than he was a drummer .
And he was a master drummer , so what does that say ?
I miss him greatly .
that’s beautiful
LOVE THIS!
This sounds and feels like a long, intimate conversation between two old friends.
Thank you for posting this whitelight3.
Respect!!!
C'est de la grande classe
@moontriangle
You said it! Ears wide open ... that's the lesson for me here!
Beautiful to see them playing together.
wonderful and free. thanks for the post!
Thanks I needed that. Those were different days. Music 🎶 was more explored and ( out there) then. I think post Coltrane.
Higgins is cool.
Wow beautiful

Tell it like it is ❤
I am seriously considering transcribing this, billy is so subtley melodic....real nice
I wish I could have spoken with Billy and just had a word or two with him.
nice, i like it. higgins is one of my favourits too. he is the kind of drummer tha can drag and never stops feelin good, and he always plays for the music. listen to the record john scofiel ´works for me´ it´s so great
A BEAUTIFUL Duet!

Mature, bold, free music
awesome video man!!!

i only sang with him a couple of times in workshop. . . but WOW. talent runs deep!
A love supreme.

Classic improv 🎵🎶🎵🎷
Yeah, spring for the whole DVD, it's worth it. And the CD 'Which Way Is East' too. By the way, this was all done in Lloyd's home, and the video was shot by his wife.
Anyone know what Billies left side ride is? I imagine a vintage K, couldn't be a vintage A...
this is the kind of fun I'm into.
yeah, Billy keeps swingin' !
OUR MAN HIGGINS!!!!
Does anybody know where I can buy this dvd? It's beautiful.
These Masters are super comfy in their sweatpants. No more shirts and ties for them.
Good! Мило!
B&W matrix 801 speakers in the back....
Like the phrasing of that repeated lick towards the end around 7:15
Nearly forgot to watch this today
Anyone know what the Condenser mic is that's standing four feet or so in front of Mr. Lloyd? I'd love to know!
great
billy's the man
at what time in the video? are you talking about the mambo sounding groove?
Where can I find this documentary!? So lovely, one of my favorite albums!
Correction: I wrote too soon. This is not the World Stage but the interior of someone's home. Sorry!
I love how into eachothers playing they are. Effortless.
I guess you could contact NBC Nightly News archives. It was on a day or two later when they featured Christopher Holiday, then a 14 year old sax prodigy who sounded like Charlie Parker. oh yes. a thousand times yes.
that's a lectern theremin in the background on the charles shot, no? did he ever record on that?
yeahhh !!!!!11
How can I get the rest of this video?
Hahahaha !! and I quote it right this time, "turn the music up" !!
Me too....
I never heard him play alto before.
At one point, Billy Higgins is playing "A Love Supreme"!
I mean 7:09
you know how exact the tubers can be at ya
I love this but I am having trouble understanding it. I know it's free but I am trying to comprehend the relationship and know what is going on with one another. I know they are engaging in a relation but it's hard to see where it is going and where it is ending up. HELP
Ethan Honeywell it's less about seeing over the long term, more significant in the immediate improvisation
A great piece of modern jazz (I note that Charles has ditched the kaftan!)
Yes thats right.... you don't know !
It's you.
why alot gyus just want to fighting here all the time?
perhaps "tribute" would be a more appropriate word.
tutti quelli che vogliono suonare la batteria dovrebbero (obbligatoriamente) studiare per 100 anni questo video..... altrimenti non vi DOVETE definire BATTERISTI!
If you watch Billy unlike alot of others he plays on top of the kit. He's far from a pounder!
9 deaf ppl here
