Cheese, chocolate, and wine. That's legit a food group. May I add, when reading reviews, start with most recent. Sometimes manufacturers change something, for better or worse, and recent reviews may more accurately reflect that. You have such a thoughtful and fun personality and it really comes through. You remind me of a very good friend, who can also be lethally snarky, but in such a way that you're not offended and even love her for it. Have a great weekend!!!

Those fit in 3 food groups. Cheese is dairy. Chocolate is a legume (hello, made from cocao BEANS). Wine is a fruit (grapes, obvi). That's a balanced meal.

Aside from the jetted tub issues that you've mentioned, I always think it's a
MAJOR MISTAKE when installing a tub
    ...whether jetted or soaker, freestanding

because it makes CLEANING the tub

I'm a house clear and I agree with this 100%, and as the other person said, showers as well. My suggestion, if someone doesn't have a hand held sprayer and won't be able to purchase one for a while, is to buy a large car washing sponge. Not nearly as convenient as a sprayer but still works much more effectively than just a rag or small sponge.

One thing that got me over buying cheap versions of things like Pillows, linens, dishes, etc., is dividing the price by how often I need to buy them. I've had 20 year old pillows, dishes that lasted 15 years, so investing in good ones is worth it.

Production notes: I've said before I love it that you talk fast. Keep it up! I love it that you look straight at the camera when you talk. And although you probably have sticky reminder notes just offscreen, you can't tell. It's just this constant stream of glorious chatter. Also, whoever is editing the visual is really good. There are a good amount of cuts, but they aren't disorienting or frustrating to watch. In fact, lots of times they're subtle enough that a cut grabs your attention again but you don't necessarily even notice it. Lastly you're sitting the perfect distance from the camera. I imagine we all have different comfort levels when it comes to something like that, but for me it's perfect. Doesn't surprise me at all that you're coming up on 300K subscribers.

Also with the jet tub consider MAINTENANCE!!! Do not get the ones where the water runs through the jet pipes. My mom made this mistake. If the bathroom is in the basement, the jets will also hold SPIDERS! They like to come out and wave at you while you try to shower. Dozens of them, and more will hide in the jets every night after you've cleaned out the first batch. And you have to stand on your head to check inside every single jet for spiders before every single shower.

As someone with mobility issues that does most shopping online i totally agree that reading reviews about the product is the best way to get a true sense of what you are going to get. But also i think you could have mentioned that it's also a great idea to pay it forward and also give honest reviews and with pictures, and not only when you are disappointed. Sometimes there are positive details that you can't see on the sellers site but are in everyone's interest to mention in a review. If someone else had posted a pic of the chairs with the pink undertones you would have known and not bought it, but it also might be a more interesting detail to another person. 💕

I'd like to offer a hearty THANK YOU for helping me...no, solely guiding me... away from a massive amount of regret. Thanks to you, clueless me was able to determine that I (mentally) lean toward Japandi & Nordic design. My current living space is anything but that - it's a mess. I'm caught in the perfect storm of midlife changes: post-divorce renovations, tight budget, while simultaneously clearing out my elderly mom's home. Without your guidance, I'd be buried under a heap of mom's old items I felt compelled to keep for sentimental reasons -- acquired regret. Instead, I've developed a sort of Nick Lewis + Marie Kondo approach in planning my home and sorting through mom's items: "Does this spark joy? Does this fit my intended design aesthetic? Would I regret bringing this into my home in a year?" Anyway, THANK YOU, Nick! I'm unable to verbalize the amount of peace, calm and release of guilt you've helped me achieve in sorting through my mom's entire house (a whole lifetime) and discarding items I really don't love. With you as my guide, I feel confident I can create a home I'll love.

The answer to a loud jetted tub is insulation and isolation. Simply put, noise is caused by reverberation. A bathroom should be designed so that the motor is isolated in a purpose-built adjoining space and insulated against noise transmission. If the tub must be in the same room, then get the manufacturer's recommendation for the amount, type and quality of insulation.

I had an aqua microfiber couch that was SO nice. It was tufted and sleek, so it never got that squished down gross deflated looked that the recliner styles get. It cleaned up so well. Even over a decade of ownership, it would literally look brand new. Loved that couch so much. And it came from Ashley. As an art teacher, I am with you in regards to noticing undertones and slight color variations. It can actually be really annoying lol.

  • @emmteemee

LOL! Your pink patio chairs reminded me of the time 25 years ago when my parents remodeled their house and my mom bought three identical burgundy sofas for the family room. They were the type with recliners on each end - metal frames so very heavy! When they were delivered, my mom was really upset because the color was "wrong." She chose it from a fabric sample in the showroom, and the color difference was probably a matter of the lighting there being different than our home lighting. She was ready to have the delivery men load them back onto the truck until they told her about the restocking fee. She decided she could live with them, and she still has them to this day. 😄

I agree with the “pink cream” colored items. I’m staying in a condo temporarily while my home is being rebuilt after a fire. The complex was converted from apartments to condos and they renovated every unit. It’s obvious that they just bought materials in bulk without any thought of whether they went together. The floor tiles are a faux slate of rust and grey tones. The cabinets are not oak but have the gold tones with a traditional door style. The granite countertops are gold, black and brown. The cabinets and granite look good together. Then we have the subway tile backsplash in the pink-cream.🤮Since I’m only here temporarily I covered them with a peel and stick mosaic that coordinated with the colors in the granite.

Jetted tub: There is a built in jetted tub in the Master of the house I bought almost 2 years ago. The surround is about 10 inches all the way around. I’m 5’ 1”. The tub is really deep and the plug must be closed manually. Almost fall on my head to do this. Fill the tub turn on the jets with switch 4 ft high 3 ft away from tub. Crawl over the surround down into the tub. Unplug tub, quickly crawl over surround, dripping wet to shut off jets before water level drops below them. What a ridiculous pain in the bohunkis. Saving money to install a very large walk-in shower where this beast now sits. Meanwhile using shower in guest bath.

I’ve owned two of those brown microfiber marshmallow couches in my lifetime (got them both at Big Lots for like $200). I sold one to a friend because it was cheaper than moving it cross-country, then I bought another about a year after I moved. They were ugly. I admit they were ugly. But they were cheap and comfortable (so comfortable, they were my preferred bed whenever I was sick).
They’re also incredibly durable. Like, I bought the last one more than 10 years ago, a family member still has it, and it has no stains, scratches, or anything, other than maybe the marshmallow pillows are going flat. I sat on it a few weeks ago, and it’s still comfortable. The one I owned before then survived my friend’s destructive dogs for almost 8 years. I can’t say the same for the more expensive couch I bought 4 years ago, which is stained, snagged, and dingy. If I could find a microfiber couch that didn’t look awful, I’d probably buy one now for the sheer durability.

Also look into cleaning a jetted tub. We bought a house with a jetted tub and the channels were absolutely filthy. Cleaning it made the water black times 4! Never ever going to install one of these stupid things.

I dont know if in Canada or in the US you have what Im going to say, but for people with very low budget and have to decor their houses, a good temporary solution is to look on Facebook for groups where people give for free any kind of stuff, with the only condition you go to get that particular object.
It allows to have all the necessary forniture in kinda short time, spend a little bit more on a specific piece and distribuite costs on a longer period 😁👍

Hey Nick, speaking of thrifting, could you do a video on how to know that you are buying a quality piece of furniture, especially antique, and how to know whether what you are paying is appropriate, that you aren't getting ripped off? Recently I bought a campaign style cabinet with hutch/bookshelf, which had been painted a happy bright green, from an antique/thrift store that I discovered using Facebook Marketplace, and it was one of THE BEST decisions I ever made. I have found that older furniture is so sturdy it doesn't need to be attached to the wall like IKEA or other retailers. (I don't have children so no one is going to be climbing on it, however, I still want something that won't randomly fall and crush our 10-pound Pomeranian.) Anyway, I'd like your advice and opinions on how to go about this. Perhaps even with how you can tell that a furniture piece actually is historically old versus some modern crappy version made to look antique that someone didn't like and ended up at a thrift store or Facebook Marketplace. I'm guessing this probably has to do with how you tell whether it is solid wood or crappy plywood or whatever cheap material they use in manufacturing these days. Thanks!

A year ago we moved into a rented flat with a jetted tub (I think it's more usual in the UK to refer them as jacuzzi/whirlpool baths - although both are brands). I'd never had experience with one, but my main takeaway is how much extra goes into cleaning them, plus how GROSS they are if people don't clean then - as the previous tenants obviously didn't. The first time I tried it out, fortunately I didn't get inside, but filled it up and turned on the jets. I can only assume years of limescale + mold proceeded to spew out of the jets into the water.
Following that, I did the most extreme method of cleaning it I could find online (bleach, vinegar and washing detergent in the water), multiple times - also, how wasteful of water is that method of cleaning?! - and scrubbed the jets with an old toothbrush, but could never totally clean away the mold residue.
Thankfully, there was an additional problem in the bathroom which meant just a couple of weeks ago my landlady replaced the bath with a standard type - and I am so happy!
After asking around, I got the impression that jetted tubs really only make sense if you will use it once or twice a week (to prevent limescale/mold build up). Otherwise, it's the equivalent of a novelty kitchen gadget that would gather dust in the back of a cupboard, and then not be worth cleaning the next time you actually remembered to use it.

OMG jetted tubs! It’s like sitting in a concrete mixer. Our previous house had one of these huge, water-wasting corner tubs before we remodeled. And of course the nasty pipes, which is why I don’t get why in the world anyone would sit in a hot tub in a rented vacation home. Over my dead body.

My parents had a pair of microfiber sofas for close to two decades. still do. They are red, and my mother made custom covers for them because, well, kids and tiny dog. We used the super wide armrests as quick stop chairs. Pitch black stains, really felt thick and dense, like a really old and worn down suede jacket. It had to be cleaned with a special furniture cleaner machine, and still didn't look new. Better, but not new.

I hear you on the tight budget and the microfibre couch. I made the same mistake. I will not buy a couch that does not have cushions on top of the frame. I recently bought an IKEA piece that in spite of c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y following the directions, managed to put together upside down. Then I found out it couldn't be taken apart. Sigh...I'm figuring out a use for it and the drawers until I can replace it. Not very environmentally friendly!

My husband redid both of our bathrooms in the past year, though we each designed our own. He did his first, and insisted on a jetted tub, which, fair enough, he uses very regularly. He tried to convince me to put one in my bathroom as well, but I really wanted a soaking tub. I tried his tub out and honestly, I hate the jets. I don't want to use them at all. I stuck to my guns and got my soaking tub, and I love it.
In regards to those chairs, you can see a huge difference in the color between the original website photos in your video and what you received. Or even their current website photos. The original are very much a yellow undertoned beige/cream color, your chairs are not. That definitely highlights why I am obsessive about looking at customer photos whenever possible as things tend to look quite different from marketing photos.

I am also not a bath person, so I never used it, one because of the noise and two the amount of water to fill it. Our grandson was the only one who bathed in it and even he didn't like the noise. Plus it was nightmare to clean!

Here's my "pink chair" story. In the showroom, the stock fabric on the sofa I wanted appeared to be the creamy linen color of my dreams. In my home it was a drab taupe at best, with violet or green undertones depending on the time of day. It was a disaster alongside my other warm, light neutrals. And here, I had seen the fabric in person and had a small swatch. It's even more tricky when buying online. Fortunately R&B has outstanding customer service and I was able to return it for fabric in a warmer, lighter shade. Moral of story: neutrals are chameleons.

Amen to the jetted tubs. They're not only loud, they empty the hot water tank and they stay hot for about 30 seconds after you turn on the jets. We used ours about 6 times and years later when we sold the house, the motor didn't work--because we didn't use it regularly! Cost over $1000 to fix it.

I have the sofa version of that leather looking microfiber loveseat - and I do NOT regret buying it. 10 years old and it still looks & feels brand new. (and everyone thinks it's suede, even touching it). It's easy to keep clean and most of all - it's cat friendly. Fur doesn't stick to it, and claws don't destroy it. But to find this gem - I looked at so so so many sofas. I found that even expensive ones could be made very badly. You really need to see furniture first hand to know what you're getting - the price tag is often not a good indicator of quality.

Hi Nick that was really excellent advice. The amount of mistakes I’ve made over the years and still make has been an expensive learning curve.
I recently bought a large area rug from Alli Express and when it came - not what I ordered in pattern. The quality is abysmal. It’s a lump of felt. I waited two months for a piece of garbage. It was a £140 which might not sound a lot, but I bet it didn’t cost £15 to make it. I ordered a large glass jug, when it came once again not what I ordered. A miniature drinking glass. Some of these companies are abysmal. I think they’re relying on people not to return as it’s a nuisance.
I agree if you’re ordering on line then one should make sure that they’ve researched the comments. I should have just gone out and bought, then I’d have gotten what I wanted.
You really made me laugh about the bath tub. We were thinking of putting one in . Glad you highlighted the problem. We don’t have neighbours to worry about noise, but the thought of lying trying to relax didn’t sound like the kind of relaxation I was looking for.
Thank you, and also about furniture, if you can’t afford new look for second hand. My daughter was really taken aback when I suggested the idea a few years ago. Once she looked around at what was available she was hooked. I love a bargain, but I like quality and you can find it in secondhand furniture. Love your channel. Stay safe. Xx 😘

I hadn't taken baths in several years and when we were renovating our current house before moving in, I asked people for their thoughts. I think maybe every single person said no to the jetted tub, to just do a regular garden tub. I heard that the jets get funky and mildewy (eeww) and that they were noisy. I didn't realize that I in fact am a bath person, but I'm glad that we didn't do jetted. It's also something else that can break and cost $ to repair.
