Carp Pilot Pro: Mapping tutorial

  • In this video I will walk you through how to:
    - Set up your wifi Echo Sounder
    - Use the Bathymetric editor, including drawing a shoreline
    - Straight forward live mapping from scratch
    - Utilizing the options during live mapping
    You will also see how to bring up maps you created earlier and have them visible on the map while you are fishing.
    Please note that only a selected set of Echo Sounders are supported:
    - Deeper: ONLY the Chirp+, Chirp+2 and Pro+2
    - Simrad: GoXSE (is being used in this tutorial)
    - Lowrance Elite Ti2
    - Raymarine Dragonfly Pro
    You do NOT need to have a solution where Autopilot telemetry data is combined with your Echo Sounder Wifi: All you need to do is to make sure that your tablet is connected to the Echo Sounder WiFi. If your boat telemetry is connected using bluetooth or 433 MHz USB radio does not matter at all.
    While Raymarine does not have any settings to make, the other three models require you to get the IP address and the port correct. Set it up in the settings once. The needed info is available in the video.
    Special note about the Deeper as it is a little more finicky than the rest of the Echo Sounders here:
    Use the Deeper app and instruct the Deeper into mode "from shore". This will trigger the GPS to start and also trigger the ability to provide depth and temperature records as NMEA messages the Pro app can listen to. The Deeper additionally needs to have a proper GPS fix. If it looses the fix for about 5 minutes the NMEA data stream will be halted. This makes the Deeper less trustworthy for live mapping than the other models. However, even though I was sceptical at first, I was quite satisfied when using the Deeper during development of live mapping. It worked very well, even though my Deeper sits next to a brushless motor and below my battery. I have two friends with similar setup try it out as well. And the Deeper proved to be quite stable. How well it works in your boat also depends on how your cables, ESCs and so on are placed around the Deeper. Electromagnetic disturbances may affect the GPS and cause problems. Then again, such discturbances may also affect other Echo Sounders.
    I have had multiple questions about the other Deeper models, like the trusty old Pro+ that several has built in: "Does it support live mapping?" And the answer is a simple "no", it can not be used for live mapping. But do not dispair: For you guys I instead recommend to activate "Mock GPS" and then produce your depth maps in the "in boat" mode with the Deeper app. Not only will the quality of your Deeper maps improve. You can export the logs from Deeper (web and app) and use them inside the pro. From the app this is really easy, and once you select to share a log the Pro app instantly comes up as an alternative receiver. Select the Pro app, and then put the log inside the "Depthlogs" folder. And that's it! Then produce maps using the Bathymetric editor, and add a shoreline as well while you are at it!
    One note though: For some reason, Deeper exports a whole lot of totally useless data. I had a file from a really short session that contained a whopping 14300 lines That is similar to the volume of data when mapping a water of multiple Ha size using a Raymarine. On inspecting the file I found that only 230 of these lines had a valid position. Such a large file will reduce the speed of the bathymetry editor and also introduce a significant pause if you use it as a starting point for a live mapping session. As I also use a Deeper I decided to fix this for us all and introduced a button called "CLEAN" in the editors "Depth Logs" page. Just select your exported Deeper file, click the clean button. The app will suggest a new file name with "_CLEAN" as the latter part of the name. In seconds you have a new and "cleaned" file containing only records with valid depth AND a position (only the 230 records as in the example above). I highly recommend you to use this if you import logs from the Deeper app.

      Thanks! Testers and my self have been using this ability for a while. And it is truly amazing to finally have the app I always wanted. The ability to get the map inside the Pro app without any additional tools needed. While Navionics is an amazing tool, having the depth map in a separate window and not directly inside the Pro app is a compromise. I have also been using Reefmaster for years, and it is truly a great tool. But it is a lot of work moving and importing logs, using Google Earth for shorelines and to export the result back to the app in the end. Now the maps just appear while using my boar, it is so much more efficient 🙂

    Hello, I have a question.
    How can I deactivate automatic map orientation in the Carp Pilot Pro app?
    So that I'm not always zoomed in when I'm at the lake.
    Thank you and best regards😊

    • @TheCarpPilot
      @TheCarpPilot  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      At the moment this zoom runs at app start to home you in where you most likely sit down to enjoy the hobby: Where you are, or where the mission/boat is when connected. And right now there is no setting made available to disable that. Such a setting can obviously be made. To quickly find another area you may of course already now use two-fingers on map to zoom in/out. Use the map search function to find whatever you want. Or select any depth map you made and instantly have the app zoom in on that.
      If I should make such an option to disable map zoom - what should Google Maps then look at? Europe at a given altitude, some km up in the air? Google maps actualy needs to look at "something"...
      If you have ideas for improvement you are welcome to joint the Carp Pilot Pro suppport group on Facebook. TH-cam video comments are not a good "forum" to discuss ideas for app changes.

    Hello, i Use a deeper echo sounder, but i dont get the depth or connection. Can you please help?

    • @TheCarpPilot
      @TheCarpPilot  ปีที่แล้ว

      I assume you use a supported Deeper model (Chirp +, Chirp + 2.0 or Pro+ 2.0). In that case: Connect to the Deeper with the Deeper app and set it in "mapping from shore". That's the ONLY mode where Deeper offer the NMEA interface. In addition, test OUTSIDE. The Deeper GPS is not the best, and if it cannot get a GPS fix it will also shut down it's NMEA interface and Carp Pilot Pro cannot receive any data at all. So please test using good conditions outside with a clear sky - away from buildings and other stuff that may obstruct the sky.

    What formats Can you export 3d model as?

    • @TheCarpPilot
      @TheCarpPilot  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The depth map is formatted as a KMZ and can be used directly in Google Earh (as an example). Just use the built in file manager and share the file by (as an example) email to use it other places than within the app

    Thanks for creating. Sometimes handling is a bit of a mess, specially when there are already quite some data my Galaxy Tablet struggeled to add more Map Data in Realtime. Nevertheless it's a great App! Is there any chance, that I can view the maps I created on a desktop computer and even export an SVG or PNG from it?

    • @TheCarpPilot
      @TheCarpPilot  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The depth map is in a KMZ format and will instantly show using Google Earth and other mapping software. But here's the cool thing: You do not have to export anything at all: The KMZ is actually an archive format. Just like ZIP, only used for compressing KML files and additional map stuff. Just rename the file from "whatever.kmz" to "whatever.zip". Then extract all your files. And inside you will find a file called "depthmap.png". This you can view basically however you like!

      @achimregelein5001 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I export the depth Map, it shows only the depth map itself, without any areal around it. So if we could add some of the surrounding landscape, like it's shown on the app for example, I think that would be helpful for. I hope you understand what I mean :)

    • @TheCarpPilot
      @TheCarpPilot  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@achimregelein5001 ok. That's clear. The area surrounding the water, which is actually the real map and not the depth map overlay. Which could serve as a mini offline map. Not a bad idea, actually. It is already now so that the depth map will show in the app even when you have no offline map available (you can use mapbox map for that). Adding a piece of real map surrounding it will for sure make it look prettier. I will give it some thought. Thanks.

    Hello. I have a Dell Latitiude 7390 laptop and I have android version 9 on it. Version 3 of the application worked without a problem. After updating to version 4, the application does not start. Only the initial graphics flash and the apk closes. Everything works fine on the phone. However, I would prefer to use the app on a larger screen, since so many new functions are introduced.

    • @TheCarpPilot
      @TheCarpPilot  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, yes. I do understand. I am trying to keep the app size under control and removed some support. Android devices are running like ever, but x86 is currently without support. I had to stop using emulator and test only with real tablets and phones as well. The mathematics libraries included are beasts, and app grew significantly in size, that's the reason. Let me do some more testing and see how it behaves with x86 included. Can't make any promises before I test. Also, I have almost a week vacation coming tomorrow. No coding, I promised my family (the past three months have been really busy creating the new version). So please have a little patience 😅

    Gibt es eine Möglichkeit bei der shoreline Inseln auszublenden ? Tolle Arbeit!!!

    • @TheCarpPilot
      @TheCarpPilot  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Island support is planned. In the "create map" page you still see a 0 for the number of selected islands. The abilities developed for it did however not work as expected. So I disabled the screen to select island shorelines and disabled the dropdown choice in the draw shoreline screen as well (it is a dropdown, but no "island shoreline" available to select). Better to release this new Bathymetry abilities now than to await till after my vacation with everything. Even though I did not manage to get it to work right now, in the future I for sure will (it is not straight forward, but possible). So right now the answer is "no, but it will be possible in the future" 🙂

    I would like to synchronize / backup my mapped depthlogs via oneDrive on two devices , but I can't find the folders of the app in the Android system , can you tell me the path where the data is ?

    • @TheCarpPilot
      @TheCarpPilot  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Backup is a good idea. Also OK if you need to set up an additional device for the app. You will find the folders using the following:
      Internal storage: Android/data/org.carrpilot.pro/Files.
      Android sets hard privacy limits on these folders (they belong to the app and are restricted so other apps have problems). If, however, you connect the Android device to a computer you will find the device and can use the file manager (at least using Windows) without any issue.
      If you later have just a few new files (say a couple of depth logs), use the built in file manager + select the file + click the share button and then select OneDrive or whatever. The built in manager can do that one file at a time.

    • @TheCarpPilot
      @TheCarpPilot  ปีที่แล้ว

      Decided you should get an easier way to do backups, it is a very good idea. So in the upcoming upgrade shortly available you can do it fast using the built in file explorer. When you enter a folder with one or more files a new zip folder icon will appear on the top. If you click this icon, the app will add all the files into a zip file, store this zip file in a new "backup" folder and finally trigger the share command. The final action brings up the list of sharing options available (like email, OneDrive and whatever apps you have installed on your device that can handle a file). Select the choice that fits you best and it is done :-) Will look into how to expand a zip file as well...

    • @TheCarpPilot
      @TheCarpPilot  ปีที่แล้ว

      OK. The expanding part was easy. So in the next version you can zip and share your depthlogs to your OneDrive. Then share that zipped file from OneDrive to your other device, and then unzip it again. Fairly easy job now :-)

    Hi, i use the injector with the dragon fly pro, is there a ability to get the gps data from injector?

    • @TheCarpPilot
      @TheCarpPilot  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it is. But be aware that while the injector is (or maybe was) an expensive device, it is not very good at what it does. I personally was amazed by the lack of quality in the GPS sentences tranmission. But seems the built in GPS may not be something to brag about either. The following report is from the Carp Pilot Pro user group on Facebook for a disappointed Injector user:
      "I've got a dragonfly with The Injector gps build into it (no autopilot). When live charting my baitboat keeps registrating points far away from the boat position."
      That said, this user may have put his injector into a very unfavorable spot inside his boat (like close to an ESC, high current battery wires). Install it like that and even a brand new GPS may struggle.
      You may be more satisfied should you build your own wifi GPS following the new 2023 video. And far less expensive than your injector as well, even with a GPS using the brand new M10 chip from uBlox. But the injector indeed works.

      Sorry for overlooking this question. I believe that QGC uses some kind of json format for their "plan" file. While the Carp Pilot Pro uses the old "plain text" with values separated by tab like in Mission Planner. I do not have a straight forward way to tell you how to convert this. Easier to just draw your surveys from scratch. Since this question the Carp Pilot Pro also has a new waypoint database with a supporting database viewer, including support for text based icons and graphical indication of catches
