The absolute best thing about shooting on actual film for most of the history of movies is the ability to nearly endlessly upscale it with perfect clarity and gorgeous color accuracy. It truly is a blessing
This movie is an incredible work of art. So many beautiful themes and intricacies. Thank you for the restorations that immortalize these artistic masterpieces.
It's very moving to me the love and hard work that Criterion and others put into restoration like this. I'm glad that there are still people in the world willing to put so much effort into the preservation and distribution of art.
That's amazing! I watched this Christopher Nolan interview how the film industry has overlooked the preservation of the original film strips and how currently the film industry is still repeating the same mistake. Truly amazed at what you guys have done!
Really appreciate the brilliant restoration work, which brings this masterpiece back to life! The first time I saw "a brighter summer day", it was the blurry and colourless laser disc copy. Despite great curiosity about the masterpiece, I wasn't able to proceed to one third of the movie before I quit. The low imagery quality renders "a brighter summer day" into a sleepy boring night. 😂 Fortunately I watched the full movie a few years later when the restored version was released, I was not only impressed by the movie itself but also by the amazing restoration work!
Amazing. With Taipei Story coming out this year I hope you guys get the rights for The Terrorizers next. I would love to see a quality transfer of that on bluray.
Awesome that you guys did this! Small complaint, it was sad you did not point out in subtitle when the characters were speaking different dialects.(Mandarin, Cantonese, Taiwanese, Shanghainese, Sichuan) It was clearly planned out by Edward Yang, and it made the story so much richer.
@@ScottJMulligan Sadly as this video says, in the past the "best" version you could find it was that HK laserdisc, so this version is it. Off top of my head some of the examples of are: Honey speaks Taiwanese to other gang member who was hiding him in Tainan. It's because he is "native" taiwanese unlike the other kids in the school who were all kids of parents who came to TW from mainland like Si'r. Si'r's father's collegue and old schoolmate speaks Shanghainese, the guy who visited America. Si'r's father speaks Cantonese when he is frusted. These are just a few, there are many others.
I'm really glad you mentioned this otherwise I wouldn't have realised. However, knowing this you can somewhat tell when they're speaking different languages from the sound and really does add another layer of authenticity to the world!
I've known about Criterion versions of movies for years, but I only just visited the Criterion website for the first time and I was surprised at the library of films they have. I'm even more surprised after watching this video and seeing the level of dedication involved in remastering films like A Brighter Summer Day
Criterion makes this world a better place. Now if only they focused more on African masterpieces like Sambizanga. Which is a landmark in cinema history....
Fours years later there’s still no release of Sembène or Gerima films which is truly a shame :( I found Emitaï, Sambizanga and a few other films with very good quality but like Harvest: 3000 years wasn’t the best quality it wasn’t bad either but it’s such a monumental film that would be really nice to see fully restored.
Now I feel bad getting this for 50% off at B&N. I gladly would've paid much much more knowing how much work went into this restoration. It's astonishing
Thank you Criterion for the marvelous restoration you've done for this masterpiece, can't wait to watch it at the Golden Horse Film Festival this year!
This needs to be done with some more of Hou Hsiao-Hsien films. Three Times and Millennium Mambo don't look so good on my DVD copy. City of Sadness was recently cleaned up and looked great. I hope we can get a Criterion for it.
You guys have done an exceptional job on this... the tree scene and the colorful party scene is awesome.. I would love to have been involved on a project this beautiful!!
Criterion is doing the Lord's work.
indeed!!!!
i literally said this in my head before scrolling down to read the comments.
Mr Jiiive YES
This seriously is one of Criterion's greatest achievements so far. Really this is an incredible contribution to film history.
It's crazy that it's even possible to do that. I love that they were able to bring to life that reflection in the door of the private conversation.

A brighter 'Brighter Summer Day'
nerdommeetsboy haha awesome 😂
Not all heroes wear capes. You guys are awesome. Loved this movie.
How do you know they don't wear capes?
+AMProductions Good point
Wow I would have had no clue how rough the original was. This might be one of the best restorations I've ever seen..
Holy shit.. this is impressive as hell
This is my therapy.
I had no idea how this movie looked in its original form. This work is just amazing! Congratulations to everyone involved!
More of these please.
upkody Yes I agree ❤❤
This is a work for entire humanity.. Thank you..
This movie made a huge impression on me when I first saw it
this is the most beautiful video i've ever seen, truly art

Martin Scorcese would be so damn proud of Criterion!
Why "would" lol he's not dead
@@luciano_luna1941 If he thought Scorsese was dead he would have said "would have been".
He has actually worked with them quite a bit, two examples being Richard III and Colonel Blimp, so he must be very happy with them.
Thank you Criterion and everybody who put the effort in saving such majestic films
this is one of my favorite films of all time!!!
delicate, yet full of angst.
though Edward Yang died young, his films will live on
Weird how such an acclaimed movie that isn't even that old required such an extensive restoration. Definitely looking forward to checking it out soon!
Yes! One of my favorite movies finally gets Criterion treatment.
I am literally crying. Thank you so much Criterion!
It's very moving to me the love and hard work that Criterion and others put into restoration like this. I'm glad that there are still people in the world willing to put so much effort into the preservation and distribution of art.
This is just insane. You guys are amazing
This was a really beautiful film. I'm amazed at the lengths Criterion went to restore it. It paid off and looks INCREDIBLE!
Thank you for doing this. I really love this film.
Criterion is so fucking important. This is incredible work.
That's amazing! I watched this Christopher Nolan interview how the film industry has overlooked the preservation of the original film strips and how currently the film industry is still repeating the same mistake. Truly amazed at what you guys have done!
They are Masters at what they do. Excellent work Criterion!
Highly talented group of individuals.
respect is too low of a word for what I have for you guys !
When I first watched this video, I couldn't help but cry.
Do this with Yang's Mahjong please! We need that stunning movie in all it's colour.

I could watch this on repeat all day.
hey big fan, we need edward yangs entire filmography on criterion he made less than 10 movies.
This is genuinely incredible
i don't know much about this movie cuz i still need to see it but holy shit that restoration is unbelivable
Do it. Worth every penny. Watched all 4 hours last night, and it didn’t feel like 4 hours. I’m still speechless
The film looks brighter and cleaner!!!
I am glad y'all exist
I seriously believe you made one of the greatest human accomplishments in modern age
Criterion always put Grade A effort on films. Keep it up!!!!
Gems being restored. Beautiful.
woahh!! Thanks you so much for these efforts, Criterion's. Your restoration brought tons of sensation to the film! This is so brilliant!
What an amazing transoformation. Wow i'm seriously impressed.
Praise the Criterion Gods!!! Holy hell this is amazing!
doing the lord's work, thank you CC
Wow criterion did an incredible job. That picture is gorgeous. Great movie by the way

Hi Shane, do you know if there are any versions I can watch that have subtitles like the way you describe? Thanks!

thank you.
One of the most incredible pieces of work i've ever seen, being performed on one of the best movies i've seen. Stunning work!
Thank you for uploading this, I've always been fascinated by the process of film restoration.

This rules so hard. Just watched this film on Criterion Channel and had no idea of this background.

This needs to be done with some more of Hou Hsiao-Hsien films. Three Times and Millennium Mambo don't look so good on my DVD copy. City of Sadness was recently cleaned up and looked great. I hope we can get a Criterion for it.
