I'm retired and sold a lot of PS Audio gear over the years in a shop here in Vienna, Austria. I worked over 30 years in the business (an still do a little bit for may personal pleasure), and over all I have to tell, that for me PS Audio was/is the nicest company, I had the pleasure to deal with. The products (as You have said) sound really great, You get very good value for money and the people working there are all kind and helpful. There is a spirit in that company, that is "old fashioned" in the very best sense. Their products produced many of happy customers. ...and Paul is really a loveable guy! Thank You for the music and the joy You gave (and still) give me.

Yes, PS offer excellent quality products and service. I also like how they deal direct with the customer. Not sure I agree with the power switch comment. I like how the power switch and placement is standardized across all of the products.

Love the system, but you're right, the occasional sales make me hesitant to jump onto new PS products. However, the fact that it's made in the US (global materials), supporting staff that work with decent wages and working conditions is what helps push the product into my heart.

I’ve purchased multiple PSA products from their web site, and have always been very happy. Every purchase made was during one of their sales. For me, one bad would be their support process. I had a warranty claim once and it took me a few weeks to get an email response. But when I called, they were able to help me. It was also clear the staff were not communicating with each other to assist me the best way they could.

These videos are SUPERB! It's not always possible to hear Good, Bad, and Ugly about a company which will affect a prospective purchase decision as the buyer will ultimately have to deal with the "Company" for warranty at some point and their commitment status is very important. I 98% agree with you on your PS Audio comments. My system is 90% PS Audio equipment and I love it. I own a pair od Stellar M1200 Class D monoblocks and I suggest you relisten to them. In my opinion they beat out amplifiers that cost 4 or 5 times more than them. I previously owned a BHK250, and a lot more expensive stuff in the past, and I truly believe the M1200's sound better. In regards to the Airlens, I recommend that you do evaluate the one your friend has or get oen for the store. BTW, I love your videos. Please keep them coming!

I’ve owned many PSA electronic products, none at the eye-watering price levels (most of them bought used) and have found all of them to be capable units. Their customer service and communication is the best I’ve ever experienced. I have had some QC issues with my new units which were semi-major issues but they handled them well. I think the prices are inflated but I would assume that they’re covering the costs of their return and trade-in policy. I have picked up a couple of new pieces during substantial sales. Right now I only have the Stellar Phono Preamp which I absolutely love, even though I have issues with a small hum if I turn it up loud. When Darren was still there we had a phone session where he tried to help me get rid of hum (never did) and PSA went so far as to replace most of the internals, so probably the problem is on my side. The forums are monitored by PS members and Paul himself will chime in when he sees an opportunity to clarify or explain. The resale value is well known and can be a turnoff when the new prices seem high ($7000 for a SACD transport?). Still, there’s a lot of love for Paul, Scott, and the whole crew there.

I also enjoyed the Digital Link III DAC which I found to be tremendous value with amazing ability to upgrade any streaming/CD transport setup. Their pricing is a bit high for my recent budget so I tend to buy used, usually through CAM.

I do feel PS audio is one of the better Manufacturers out there, I've met Paul and Chris Brunhaver at shows and I've had a good experience with them. Nice People. If I have a criticism at all, its that Paul will not miss a chance to self promote (as is his right of course) and I've seen this rub people up the wrong way. But generally I feel the heart of the company is in the right place and the products are good. Right now I have the DSD Mk2 on my shortlist and just waiting for a demo unit to be arranged (I'm in UK before you ask).

Very neat video about a brand I've not owned, but have followed their channel along time.
A little surprised to hear about the depreciation of value due to regular sales, but I suppose it makes sense if they need to make space, or if have a newer version coming out.
Would wonder about how well other DAC's are holding value, since used the Mk1 as the example. I would assume PS amps or speakers hold their value better.
That Stellar Strata is on a very short list of contenders I'm looking at when finally move house.

What is your review on PS Audio Speakers especially on FR10, FR20 & FR30?

  • @HAL9007
    @HAL9007 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I have a top of the line PSAudio system. Good review, I totally agree. A few related points:
    (1) Local stereo stores typically mark up equipment 100% from the price they pay from the factory.
That's a good reason to buy from factory-direct companies like PS Audio -- you are probably getting much better value than equipment sold in local or chain stores.
    (2) The criticism of resale value of the DS DAC 1st Gen is pretty accurate. However, a lot of that devaluation happened because there is a new DS DAC 2nd Gen. There are going to be a lot of original DS DAC owners who want to upgrade to the new model and the market is going to be "flooded" with the original DS DACs. The good news for the general public is that the original DS DAC is a wonderful product and is a huge bargain purchased now. HUGE bargain..!
    (3) What other manufacturer invites the general public to drop in for a tour of their facility? Without an appointment. I have done it. I got a tour from the owner's son Scott, who even spent 30 minutes with us listening to their top of the line system.
    (4) The best sounding music on my system is anything recorded at Octave Records. It is phenomenal stuff. Blue Coast Music is also great.

Since making my initial comments, the analogue output board for the right-hand channel of the Mk 2 DAC has been replaced and the FPGA firmware has been updated to Mt Massive and I couldn't be happier. I played a couple of fusion jazz CDs recently and the sound quality was superlative: spacious and realistic with a massive soundstage and wonderfully precise imaging as well. That was in addition to some marvellous music, superbly played.

PS Audio soundstage is certainly a good point for them but IMO it's just that. I find their products lacking in dynamics. Also they have noise issues, both from the speakers and the unit themselves. I have noise coming from my P15, BHK250, you can hear them pretty easily at night. Resell value sucks largely because of the trade in program, you can basically assume the MSRP price is listed minus trade in.

I have Direct Stream DAC MK1, The Memory Player, The BHK Preamp and the Power Regenerator. My list of bad include their poor User Interface implementation in the display. I guess they realized that and took the UI away with newer models. The Remote UI design is also not well thought through. The Regenerator time to time gets locked up display I need to reboot. There is this lack of polish (paper cuts) kind of issues that tend to annoy me these days. the resale value is indeed a big issue. I am not planning on upgrading to newer units.

Wow Love the honesty, I don’t stream only vinyl and CD but I get the impression most Dac’s or streamers don’t hold their value because of constant improvements.
Wonder if the amplifiers and other gear loose that much value. For me that’s the most important factor, resale value, McIntosh has always been the leader. Don’t know anyone who doesn’t upgrade at some point. Gear that holds its value is money in the bank. 😎

Paul & PS Audio certainly have earned the accolades they've received over the years - I still have one of Paul's prized pre-amps kicking around somewhere in my house, it once held down what was for me and my budget at that time, a system that certainly could be described as reference - somehow McGowan and company still remain on the cutting edge of sound per dollar value - - it is worth noting and nothing short of amazing that the FR30's, the very first PS Audio speaker to make it fully to market is completely heralded in every circle I know of - that is a spectacular feat and deserves recognition. I can't think of a any other single company that primarily produces electronics or even just manufactures speakers that has ever matched that achievement. Even the early maggies didn't receive the immediate accolades handed to PS Audio's 1st real shot at the speaker market. Historical imo.

I feel like Paul is the kinda guy, who will watch something like this, but instead of becoming butthurt or having any negative comments, he'd probably start taking notes on what he should be looking into improving. And they'll probably get to work on improving it. He knows as much as anyone else how easy it is to get stuck in an echo chamber of bias, and i cant help but feel he likely appreciates the hell out of thoughtful criticisms from someone else is in the business.
There's one thing i already know he'd likely just be shaking his head in quiet disappointment over.... I, and likely MOST people (not dealers) probably appreciate a diminished resale value and the availability of factory refurbs, (which is a by product of their trade in programs you mentioned as a positive) a LOT more then we don't appreciate being able to basically fleece someone on the used market just because the manufacturer wants it to be this way. With the vibe i get from Paul, that was as intentional. PS Audio resale isn't abnormally low, the other high end brands VERY intentionally inflate theirs to abnormal highs, so that you're more likely to buy the product new directly from them or one of their licensed dealers.
We are LUCKY that we have a high end audio brand willing to do these things for their customer, rather then continuing to line the pockets of their dealers and themselves on reputation alone. And no dealer, no matter how genuine they seem, is going to do anything to change this opinion of mine. (although, it's more observation then opinion). Audio technica has a similar refurb program, that exists souly, and specifically, to allow people of a lower income to still be able to afford their better products and their warranties. They probably make more money this way, just not the dealers too. PS Audio is no different as far as that goes i assume. They know it hurts their third-party re-sale, they dont care, their company is doing fine, this is making them MORE proffit then otherwise, and people who otherwise couldnt afford their products, can buy them, with warranty. I think PS Audio cares more about their customers, and high end sound quality itself, then they do about endless business growth and a constantly increasing profit model of doing things. The world would be a FAR better off place if more companies were into this kind of thing. PA Audio, as far as i can tell, IS the diamond in the rough of high end audio, and they know it too.
I work for a living, hard, and there's a pretty damn good chance, the only truly high-end audio products ill ever be able to afford, including the manufacturer warranty, is PS Audio. And they probably did that on purpose. I am grateful. That's not a bad thing Mr High end audio dealer. Its very disappointing that you'd rather cater to the upgrader, then the person trying to enter the high end market, and that's a huge part of what drives away new people that aren't already on your elitist bandwagon. Just saying.
You ARE, 100%, sitting there talking a bit of crap, just because its high end, and affordable, and trying REALLY hard to not make it seem like that's what your doing. What the hell is wrong with you? That's absurd. This is why "music lovers" cant stand "audiophiles". It's an intentionally walled ego-driven garden. You guys use music to listen to equipment, not the other way around. The only distortion you guys cant seem to remove, is the distortion in your perceptions of reality lol.

I also enjoy Paul's TH-cam channel. I've been using PS Audio on and off for years. My biggest gripe is the PS Audio's IR codes conflict with LG products. I can't use any PS Audio devices in the same room as say a LG TV, or Blue-ray player. I contacted PS Audio and they claim it's not their fault but LG's. Well, LG is a enormous company and they aren't going to change all their IR codes to accommodate a niche company like PS Audio. PS Audio needs to fix this - but they refuse to. I've ended up selling off all my PS Audio equipment.

Is this the guy that loves to say the name Baskin like it's a magic spell word? That Paul guy seems like he believes in his own little world a little too much if you get my meaning lol. Well, I for one think it's forgettable. PS audio is for people who love marketing hype and eat it up also people who love good specs on paper who are tone deaf and say things like How many watts does it have or The bass shakes my walls. I like music to move me to tears sometimes tears of joy lol and I like to feel when I listen but people listen for whatever reason they want nothing wrong with the first scenario. Many are like this when their young and naïve. When you get older sometimes you value the beauty texture depth and soul in music more than how loud or how much bass output it reproduces. Getting all those things is not always possible no matter the budget. Solid State from my experience does all the things the specs say bass down to mid-20s this and that but it all sounds like a reproduction minus the heart and soul. Good tube equipment point to point with the right tubes and design with tube rectification put meat on the bones the notes are thicker juicier more lifelike. I even prefer the bass produced by tube amps. The longest I have been able to listen to solid-state gear is an hour after that I need some aspirin. With my Soundlab A1PXs and Joule Electra OTLS I have listened for 8 hours straight and fell asleep in the blanket of comforting sound.

@@erics9754 Having watched some of his TH-cam videos, I am not a fan of Paul McGowan because he is often blowing smoke or his videos are often an unorganized stream of consciousness (or unconsciousness). However, I believe that the PS Audio BHK line of products are hybrid designs with tube input stages, so not 100% solid-state. I have not heard them, but I assume the BHK line sounds at least a little more tube-like than 100% solid-state. As far as the tube vs solid-state argument in general, I don't listen to music to fall asleep, so I don't have a problem with high quality solid-state electronics, but I mostly listen to music that has been well-recorded in the digital age, versus the older stuff with questionable recording quality (regardless of whether it was remastered). But it is undoubtedly true that "some" recorded music sounds better with some tubes in the signal path, even if not 100% tubes.

I completely agree that solely as an audio product, PSA is very high quality. They tend to be very reliable and well priced relative to performance. Their customer service is exceptional, providing in-house 30-day demos, at least in US.
The resale value is an issue but is that unique in the industry? I know of no high end audio product who’s value doesn’t plummet in short order.
I do agree the fit & finish does need improving, partite speakers. The FR30 is spectacular sounding speaker, particularly within its price range. It’s very easy to drive and extremely versatile. The finish however of cheap looking plastic is reminiscent of horrific 90’s lucite or something I’d see at Ikea 🤦‍♂️. At the very least, why not offer a real wood furniture grade veneer finish, even if there’s a reasonable upcharge. I’d be embarrassed to have those cheap looking plastic boxes in my living room

    • @AT-wl9yq
      @AT-wl9yq ปีที่แล้ว +1

It may seem like they should have lowered prices going factory direct, but for high end audio equipment, its a terrible business model. The only advantage PS Audio has over most other direct sales brands, is everyone knows who they are. And that's a big advantage for them.
The single biggest problem for direct sales is advertising. 100% of promotion costs are bourn by the manufacturer. And its not even the best type of advertising. There's no substitute for having your gear displayed in a retail store, and having potential customers see and hear it in real life. If you are a smaller, lesser known company, other brands do the advertising for you. For example, if you make speakers, customers are going to be drawn to established brands. When they come into the store to hear a pair of Wilson's. B+W, Sonas Faber, etc...., they are going to see, and maybe audition your speakers as well. That can't happen any other way.
Not too far behind is inventory structure. Yes, dealer cost is less than retail so they make less money on the product, but there are some upside to it. Traditional manufacturers almost always have some form minimum requirements for demo units and stock. For example, if PS Audio has a 20 piece minimum that the dealer is required to stock, they get paid right away for all 20 pieces. Now those products are sitting on someone's else's shelves waiting to be sold.

I live in New Zealand and I doubt anyone here would be able to "try before they buy" a PS Audio product. The importer would have to obtain the unit from Boulder and if the customer didn't like it for whatever reason, the importer would have to either return it to Boulder, or try and sell it to someone else. I don't think he would be prepared to take the risk. In 2011 I took a punt and ended up purchasing the PerfectWave SACD transport and the DirectStream MK I DAC and I was very happy with them. However, what I hadn't realised was that the DAC had actually been on the market for some time and that it was soon to be replaced by an improved model. Your video, Adrian, was one of the reasons I decided to trade in the earlier DAC. I have had the Mk 2 DAC for about three weeks now and, sadly, it has a major fault - no right hand channel when using the RCA outputs (none of my equipment has XLRs) - and it is currently being serviced in Auckland as I write with the replacement of one of the boards. Hopefully, all will be well after that and I will be in the position to put it through its paces.
