For an athlete you have to be the very best, while a musician just have a rare instrument or a common instrument and win a few awards and that’s better. I’ve seen a Cello player get into Columbia (she didn’t even play competitions that much) and Bassoon player get into Harvard (he did a few competition).
I think high schools should start preparing students for this process the first year they come in - not wait until they are juniors and seniors soon to graduate. Students need to understand the college process so they can prepare themselves to be competitive as soon as possible. College is a very selective place.

Maybe what needs to be done is take the implicit biases from people out of the equation by using a Neural Network trained on a datatset of all acceptances/rejections along with their Median income or some other success-measurement to determine whether someone's subjective "fit" for the school really lead to success later in life. Using a model like that to then predict how likely a student will succeed if accepted given their accolades would maybe bring some more objectivity and reasoning to the system based on the ever elusive "fit" that these admissions directors profess about. Honestly I'm just messing around (at least in my experience Neural Nets are a bit overhyped) but seriosuly it's frustrating that kids every day have what it takes and can't capitalize on that due to some arbitrary decisions made by these seemingly random people.
Yeah GPA is a fucked measurement, even at my school there are teachers that give 100s and teachers that give 80s for the same courses so if I get teachers who just generally give lower grades I'm fucked by luck

If a student applies to uni A with a 50% acceptance rate, but admissions in uni A knows that his application will likely be accepted by a school with a 20% admit rate, so they'll waitlist or deny him for another student who has a high chance of attending.

Keep in mind, each university's process is not the same... the way they are rolling over this is a little inorganized and anxiety provoking. At most schools there is a single-couple officer who read your app from front to back and either recommend or not recommend for admit. Then they all get together and decide on the top ones. So what they are showing here is towards the end of the process where apps have all been read already.

It's no longer even 15 minutes. It's 15 seconds for a computer, then probably another five minutes for a real person after the computer decides the student has made the first cut.
Keep in mind that if you get rejected, that doesn't mean you're unqualified. Just not perceived as a fit. Don't worry, you'll go to a college, get a job, and have a good life. Just don't forget your work ethic and what you stand for.

And when they have to decide between 2 candidates, they will go with the student who can pay full or near full tuition. Sad it is all about money.
Not really- my school actually PROHIBITS first year students from most honors and AP classes unless you have made accommodations with the headmasters. Coming from that kind of perspective, it doesn’t REALLY matter if you take advanced classes at all or not, esp. for first years, but if you want better chances at really good colleges, I would take maybe one or two higher-leveled courses at your strongest subjects in the later years. Idk, it really isn’t the end of the world if you didn’t, and the most important thing is to do what’s best to your level, because happiness > stress and misery.

To be honest all colleges really want to know is are you going to be somebody in the future that will make us look good. I am 13 and when I apply to my colleges next year I am going to tell it how it is and let them know I know what they are thinking. Doing this makes them realize that you actually know how this stuff goes and works and you have the same mentally as them. Giving you a better chance to get accepted in my opinion but I could be wrong. I highly doubt the process really goes like this but aye. Believe want you to believe want. I’m always curious how often schools talk to high school talk to their students about community college options. I think Mia college is a great option especially if you didn’t do so well academically in high school give me a college could be that opportunity to kind of make up for that and you get that AA degree you can transfer to a four-year university. In some cases you don’t even have to penis you’re a degree. If you just wanna do a year of college and just do really well academically, you don’t earn 30 or 40 credit that will sometimes get you into a university. Economically can you give me a call just a great way to go. Also, give me a call just can increase your chances of getting into the college that Steve generally difficult to get into a straight out of high school.
Why aren't the applications run through a computer algorithm instead of this highly subjective and unreasonable process?
Elite colleges like Grinnell have so many high-qualified applicants that it is impossible to have an objective admissions criteria. Princeton, for example, stated a few years ago that 80% of applicants were considered “well-qualified” (which, for an applicant from a standard public school, would be an unweighted GPA of 3.8 or higher and an SAT Score of 1400 or higher) but they can only offer admission to 6% of them, as there are a limited number of spots in each class.

As a student who attends one of these elite colleges, the main benefit of attending these schools is not the education; it is the networking. It is much harder for certain industries (particularly the high-paying ones, such as consulting and investment banking) to get the internships you need to break into the industry after graduation if you do not attend one of these schools, and it is also much harder to get into certain graduate programs if you do not attend one of these schools. Medical schools and law schools are exceptions, as you can definitely get into a top medical school or law school by doing really well at a state flagship university. However, for many Ph.D. programs (including the area in which I intend to get my Ph.D.), you almost need to attend a top undergraduate institution to get a Ph.D. One MIT Professor in my field even went as far as to say that your connections and prestige of the undergrad institution you attended (which often go hand in hand) are so important, that GPA is more of a “secondary factor” in admission. Out of roughly 200-250 students in the top 10 Ph.D. programs in my field each year, there will usually only be 5 who did not attend elite undergraduate institutions. Also, prestige is typically the most important factor in choosing a Ph.D. program, because the more prestigious the institution you get your Ph.D. from, the more likely you are to obtain a tenure-track professorship (which is the goal of most Ph.D. candidates).

To be honest all colleges really want to know is are you going to be somebody in the future that will make us look good. I am 13 and when I apply to my colleges next year I am going to tell it how it is and let them know I know what they are thinking. Doing this makes them realize that you actually know how this stuff goes and works and you have the same mentally as them. Giving you a better chance to get accepted in my opinion but I could be wrong. I highly doubt the process really goes like this but aye. Believe want you to believe want. And also just be you in your essays or whatever unless you are a loser lol.

Crynoux TeH GawD Yeah but it makes you seem formulaic. It makes you seen that you have no personality. You have to show who you are. I'm almost done with my replies from uni and I got into a lot of universities that I'm actually way below the average SAT yet they accepted me. My extracurriculars and essays, in my opinion, are what saved me. I think they truly reflect who I am, not what a college wants to see. The only problem is that if you're not passionate about anything then it's going to be difficult. Yeah and why are you applying when you're 13-14 lol. Don't bother. Just work on your grades and extracurrics now
