- Welcome back guys! Thanks for stopping in. Today we will be going through one of the days I’ve had during the Radiology building job. The goal for that day was to mount the disconnect and prep the Siemens panel for a chiller in an MRI mechanical room. I got pretty far until i got called onto a job to help pull 4/0 parallel wire for a permanent generator! Below I’ve attached all the links spoken about in the video. I find it useful to lean a 4ft ladder against thewall to hold up large or heavy equipment while mounting it to a wall.
We had a pump up die cart to hold heavy panels up against walls. Saved your back.

I love your work ethic! In my over 4 decades in the trade, I’ve worked alone more times than I care to count, I admire the way you worked to get that feed in the disconnect! During Super Storm Sandy, we had a rental generator brought to one of our line shops and the electrician was sent out with nothing to terminate with. Leads were 750 mcm and he was struggling so I gave him a hand. I used 2 hole lugs and a 2 ton press to terminate, it was a bitch but we finished it. Generator was for a temp feed, we never put it online, we restored power in the meantime. Again, well done?
Borrow a tip from cabinet installers. When they hang cabinets alone, put a 2x4 on the wall at the height wanted, then place the cabinet (Switch/fuse panel) on that 2x4 and that takes the weight and can easily be held with one hand while screwing to the wall and/or plywood backer board then remove 2x4 once the panel is screwed in.

Condolences on having to be anywhere near a sewer lift station. As system operators, especially the apprentice operators, we had to ride with crews occasionally, to observe the water techs do their jobs. For those who'd never worked in that industry before, it familiarized them with their terminology, with the equipment we'd be monitoring remotely, and gave people a greater appreciation for the work the field guys did. Experiencing the stench from a lift station in the heat of summer, even above ground, and seeing literally THOUSANDS of cockroaches down in the wet well made me really appreciate what I did, and respect for the field guys.
Great job Lexi! Try putting a piece of strut across the bottom ,and then put your disconnect on the strut.
I'm a new beginner learning as much as I can. Im going to school for this good luck to me. But I like the way you explain on how to install electric wiring into a panel. I see the hard work you put in. So I know the reward is great.
And this is the lasting or no say keep doing your TH-cam channel I'm learning a lot from what you guys do and how much electricians deal with other people's mistakes

Pro tip from a none pro, Drill first hole and leave your gun in it will hold the panel {Depending on the weight of panel} also when feeding though pipe alone, I use a small amount of pookie at the tip, slides right in like butter. just dont put alot as it will be a mess and have something to clean it off when it pokes through. But meh, maybe I'm just dumb.
Afew things.
Determine where the bottom of the disconnect. Temporarily install a piece of strut so you can support the disconnect on it.
Is that plywood Fire rated? If so, you should put the labels outside on the Inspector would know. Maybe next time use a piece of plywood that square.
I love watching your channel , I went to school for residential and commercial electrician but I hvnt worked out in the field, I ended up working for the railroad but I want to get back into it and start my own business

I used to own a commercial MEP contractor I picked up a ton of shit from a bunch of people.
When it comes to mounting ply and the box, if there’s no stud to screw a 2x4 to to rest it on (level of course) find something that you can rest it on while mountain it at that height. (Easier than you might think if you look hard enough) you’d be surprised what just 1 screw can hold up too

I found out that some areas of the country use Brown Purple Yellow for 277/480 volt system because the NEC says that orange is to be used for marking a high leg. In MN we also use B-O-Y.
I know down here in Texas with the utility I work with we do use brown purple yellow for 277/480 because over time the orange can at times fade really bad and some people will mistake it for brown. But it is interesting to see how others do things.

A tip for you - buy some decently gauged ratchet straps, and some blocks and tackles, a bit strange I know but I learnt that tip from an old timer.

I suggest you use a cleat on your plywood to temporarily support the panels until you can screw them in. If you get a couple of telescopic support poles, they will hold the cabinet against the wall until screwed in. Great to see you're not afraid of hard work but certainly know what you're doing. Have you ever tried using a Hickey bender for heavy cable? Just curious. Keep up the vids.

I had to install a cabinet solo for fiber about the same height and it weighted so much. Turns out that a small step ladder is exactly the right height to hold it up to screw in.

I’ve found it easier when hanging a heavy panel/box, once I get the plywood mounted, is to just shoot one screw in for the top corner (doesn’t matter which one) and hang the box on the one screw, then, use a magnetic torpedo level and lift the other corner up with one hand and shoot the other screw in. I hate measuring, it never comes out right for me. Lol

What electrician doesn't have standard and metric allen wrenches? That's a job you shouldn't have had to go to. Like you, I take pride in doing clean work. Takes a little longer and I'm sure my boss isn't a fan for the extra time, but it's his name on the product and I need to make sure I make a good name for myself. So good job in keeping at it.
I jave that exact same Klein's strippers. Funny when I read the reviews that the pros who didnt like it used it on the wrong wire. It says on the packaging what insulation types to use it for. Yeah, they didnt read that part. Now I'm debating if I should get the larger strippers for the 350+ mcm. I haven't had to deal with that wire size yet.

Brings back memories when I used to pull data cabling in a variety of P.I.T.A locations and closets....feel your pain but I'm digging your videos with explanations.... I never did electrical but encountered similar obstacles for sure.... especially vendor related....they need to ask those of us who actually do the work which designs are usable and which just make us sweat our collective @sses off right 👍

Some commercial & hospitals only allow you to use fire rated plywood. Have to leave the stamp stating its fire rated unpainted.
I always use 7/8 strut behind panel/disco then 1-5/8 to support the pipe I find it's easier to mount by yourself

110.12 all the way, nice work. I bought the klein cable stripper in your video a while back, turns out it doesn't work on URD, insulation is too thick.
In a future video when your working with the larger wire and termination lugs, show the final torquing and the choice of torque wrench and hex bits etc that you use for the job at hand as that will add yet another important step you perform normally off camera and you can explain the importance of doing such a procedure.
good Journeyman jiggle the feeders and intuitively know when to stop tightening.
Tip: If your working by yourself take the guts out of the switch it will be easier to mount and the gear wont be in your way when you put the cable in or better yet make your own KO in the corner so the cable comes in straight.

Running a service van for a few years was a great way for me to get a ton of experience when I first Journeyed out. I went on to running my own projects for 7 years after that. But now I am at the point I want to travel to big jobs and stop doing all this RUSH RUSH RUSH work. Already have my travel letter from my hall and just need to get a few state licenses. Calls are going unfilled at many locals and some places are over $50hr, plenty of OT, and with $100 incentive pay every day worked. Fuck all that stress and fuck being tied down to one company. I had my experiences and now I am only in it for the travel, easy money, and packing my pension😈
