    Very nice.... There is an unstated policy here though that probably should be stated: this works ONLY when the notes (little numbers) represent the ONLY candidates for those numbers. In other words, it allows us to make the conclusion that a certain number is definitely going to be IN A CERTAIN ROW OR COLUMN for a set of 3 adjacent blocks. (Alternately, as you showed in the puzzle, REAL numbers [big numbers] also enable us to make these conclusions.) This is like chess.... when you know the patterns to look for, they start jumping out at you.... :-) Thanks for sharing this! Excellent stuff.

    • @SudokuGuy
      @SudokuGuy  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Victor Wheeler Thanks Victor Recognizing patterns is essential. Spotting them can be difficult for some of us. It takes practise spotting them.

    • @angelmendez-rivera351
      @angelmendez-rivera351 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The policy does not need to be stated, because in the first place, the rule about using little numbers is that you can only use them if they can only go in two cells within a block. If your little numbers are not restricted to those cells, then you are obviously using them incorrectly.

    Question! Robin I love your teaching style!!! I am learning so much. I have wanted more practice and it occurred to me that I make more puzzles by exchanging the entire top row of blocks with say the middle row of blocks and the same with the columns. It interests me to see what happens to the techniques that can be applied. Have you ever tested this idea out? If it works it would give us additional examples for practice and possible alternate techniques. I am testing this theory out beginning with the easiest but I wanted to ask you about this. Thanks for great lessons.

    Sir, very nice indeed. Can we generalise as follows:
    Same three small numbers can not be either in a row or in a column...
    OR
    Same small numbers can at max be at two places in a row or in a column...

    • @SudokuGuy
      @SudokuGuy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      At the beginning of solving aim for only 2 small numbers in a cell. the time may come with hard puzzles that you may have to add more possible numbers in a cell.

      The cleaver and mallet pattern occur often in advanced puzzles. Spotting them is the key. Next Feb I will be uploading a puzzle with 2 cleavers, and 1 mallet. These can make a big difference in the speed you solve as well not becoming stuck.

    • @anitaramani5046
      @anitaramani5046 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sudoku Guy I have been diligently following your lessons and this one felt like a ‘big jump’ haha. My plan is to watch this a few times before proceeding to the next one. This lesson has also taught me to ensure that I put into only 2 numbers (max) in each cell (at least for now). Thanks again!

    Great lessons. But for this one I have the same problems as some of the comments below. At time 5:20, you say *if* but they are small 5/8 numbers. Should they be big numbers for this logic to work?

    • @SudokuGuy
      @SudokuGuy  28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It could be either a 5 or an 8. That is why I show them as small numbers. Robin

  • @marisarobertson5914
    @marisarobertson5914 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    First Robin, I must thank you for teaching me how to do Sudoku in a straightforward fashion. I'm a little confused about the cleaver. When you show the shape of the blade you show that there are four numbers the same in the two adjacent blocks. do these numbers have to be in same position of the same two blocks? In other words could you have the two numbers in the top row of the first block and then the two numbers say in the middle row of the second block?
    Secondly, you are a very good teacher. Were you a professor of some sort in one of your previous careers? Keep up the great work and thanks very much!

    • @SudokuGuy
      @SudokuGuy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Marisa,
      There are many directions a cleaver can be spotted. In all cases the blade takes up 2 blocks. As long as the numbers in the blade are located in the 2 columns or rows but not in the row or column of the handle they can be a cleaver. Look at tutorials on the cleaver. As you advance you will spot many cleavers.

  • @fiercegearocr3659
    @fiercegearocr3659 ปีที่แล้ว

    in these examples, are the little numbers that are in each box meant to be the ONLY cells in that box where those little numbers are possible (in other words, is that a requirement for these patterns to work?)
    Another question (which is kind of similar-but-opposite compared to the first question 😅)...looking at your mallet example: would anything be affected if the top right cell in the Middle Center Box had a little 5 AND another little number in it (for example, if it had a little 5 and a little 1 instead of only a little 5)?
    thanks!

    • @SudokuGuy
      @SudokuGuy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello fiercegear..... Not knowing which lesson or tutorial you are talking about I hope I can answer your question.The little numbers in each cell are the only possible numbers which can go there. As you go further in the puzzle some of these will be eliminated and you will finish up with only one number which will be the big number.
      I strongly suggest you go to the link below which lists all the tutorials and lessons in order Master the video numbers from 1-12 first.

      Darren Clark There are many moments in a puzzle in which the only way to place a particular digit somewhere, or at least restrict it to a row or column within a block, is by using one of these four X-wing, because you would not be able to using TMB-LCR.

    • @michaelaliotta9452
      @michaelaliotta9452 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree Darren. Apart from the cross, the rest could be found with the LCR/TMB technique. Adding cleavers, mallets and tables just makes it confusing. Keep it simple.

    A bit of confusing part in cleaver and table.. when u changes the position of small numbers in blade of cleaver and legs of table there is no 2nd position of that small number is the box .. so u r assuming that the 2nd position of that small number should be in the blade or the legs of the table .. hope u get my point.

      ubctbird65 hey slick, maja said sir and please. in my universe thats pretty courteous. i appreciate Sudoku Guy 's slow pace because this is a logic puzzle. but i also share the sense that these are VERY basic techniques given different names and these videos can be very tedious. keep your finger wagging to yourself. stop getting upset for other people, especially when youre mistaken.

    • @angelmendez-rivera351
      @angelmendez-rivera351 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheSeeohhdee *stop getting upset for other people, especially when you're mistaken*
      You're a hypocrite. You say this *even though* you're definitely upset and are also mistaken, because as stated, these are not renamings of basic techniques, thess are advanced techniques. Using LCR-TMB or matching tuples alone cannot produce an X-wing without applying bifurcation or further logic that makes it more advanced. If you get the impression that this is not true, then you are wrong. It is that simple. Sudoku is logic, and logic is objective. You do not simply get to decide whether a technique is equivalent to another or not. Different game-theoretic theorems exist for each technique, and they are applied differently in different puzzles.
      Before you go off giving lectures to people, make sure you are not being an uninformed hypocrite next time, capisce?

    Hi sir
    How much time on average should it take a good sudoku solver to solve a difficult suduko?

    • @SudokuGuy
      @SudokuGuy  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It depends on how many procedures, tricks and patterns you spot. It takes longer if you put all the small possible numbers in yourself. For me it can take 30 -40 mins for the very difficult. levels. Practice helps to speed things up. You get great satisfaction when you can solve the very difficult puzzles. Have fun.

    • @angelmendez-rivera351
      @angelmendez-rivera351 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The time it takes to solve a difficult sudoku puzzle, if you are experienced and know techniques, ranges between 20 and 35 minutes, usually.

    Your videos are amazing; they have been so incredibly helpful. A ‘small’ suggestion: could you please stand in such a way that the puzzle is clearly visible most of the time (to the far left)? I realize it’s tricky when you have to point things out and write stuff, but it helps us learners see the patterns that you are referring to more easily. Thank you:)

      +CHANDRA SEKHAR Hi Chandra, As I am not a programmer, I can't say, however sudoku definately helps brain fitness, and memory as well as logic. Memory is required to remember all the different techniques and tricks, and also if you wish to go faster and not put all the pencil marks in and outside the puzzle.

    I'm confused. In this lesson (20) at 17:42 you already have 4s in top #s 7 and 9. Why isn't a 4 in #8 also a possibility?

    • @SudokuGuy
      @SudokuGuy  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Lindsay Johnston Well done. Lindsay. You are right in that an 8 goes in cell 2. I was pointing out the pattern known as a diagonal cross using 4's. If I was going to go on with the puzzle that would have been solved, however I was purely demonstrating the patterns in this puzzle to watch for. Hang in there. If you are up to lesson 20 you are doing well.

    • @simon24h
      @simon24h 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Essentially, a four there would lead to a contradiction. But that's also true for a four in #7. So the puzzle was clearly made up to show off this technique.

    I found this lesson to be very confusing. You did not explain why you have used both empty cells and numbered cells to make the cleaver. If it doesn’t matter, then cleavers are virtually all over the board. Same for the mallet. Also, it would help if the red template was drawn to scale.
