I like the fact that you don't assume that we know everything. I'd rather be shown several times and get the idea to stick than having an expert whizzing through and saying Oh by the way there is an X wing. Thank you so much.

Doing sudoku for years but now I understand x wing. Thanks. But around the 9 minute mark you places a 2 and 8 in the top row of the right cell that I understood but you also place the 28 in the same cell under it and I didn't understand how you got that?

Filling in everything is fine, but tedious unless youre using an app or computer - too much using an eraser. But to me it becomes a totally different type of puzzle, much more visual but a lot less technical. Normal way you add possibilities, filling everything in you remove them. But obviously you will save time not going back and forth in most occations.

Thanks for amazing video, i have something on minute 7:30, when u were talking about no.6. I believe it should be written in R1,C8. Because 6 would be in the three bottoms squares in R1-R3, C4-C6. Since the 2 left squares in the same area are noted for 2 numbers 3&5. And there is a 6 in R8,C7. Thanks

I am sorry if I missed something but in 9:14 why did Robin added 2 into B7? I understand the logic behind A3 and A7 but not sure why he suddenly decided to add 2 into B7. Many thanks in advance >.
The only suggestion I can give is have another look at the video as well as the comments underneath. Whenever there is only 2 empty cells in a row col or blockt they become a matching pair.This is a very important technique to learn for advanced solving. I hpe I have answered your question. Robin

I learned to play on an app on my phone which has an auto fill feature for candidates. And I just realized i wasn't just being lazy but I am a moron. I can't tell you how often I would miss a pair in a row or box and take forever to find it because all the boxes were full. I always look at what you are calling X-Wing as if a number forms a square then the numbers between get eliminated. It is (I think it is called the XY-Wing which involves more or less the same but over 3 rows and colums not necessarilty complete. I use this more intuatively and I agree having to many candidates can be confusing so avoid it as long as possible. I like Matching Pairs btw.

There is actually some more powerful x-wings. In this puzzle the corners of the x-wing ended up in four different boxes, but it is also possible, though much more rare, that the corners end up in only two different boxes. In that case you can not only remove marks in the rest of the rows/columns (depending on the direction, or type as it is called here) but also in the rest of the two boxes.
@@SudokuGuy It is the first time that I have heard the term "diagonal cross" used for the kind of x-wing in question, but it is exactly what I am talking about. Per definition an x-wing is formed when a digit is restricted to the same two columns within two rows, or vice versa, and the diagonal cross fulfils that criterion so it is technically an x-wing. In tutorial #18 the 4 in box 2 was already restricted by the given and marked 4s in box 1 and 3. But if the 4 in column 2 was instead placed in e.g. R5C2, and R1C1 was blank, the 4s in row 2 would still be restricted to the same two cells in box 2, without being able to place or mark any 4s in box 1 and 3 that would affect box 2 directly, and it would still eliminate 4 from R1C5 and R3C5, not directly due to the x-wing, nor because there was were any placed, marked or given 4s in box 1 and 3 forcing it out of row 1 and 3 in box 2, but because the 4 were forced into box 2 in row 2. The puzzle would must likely not have a unique solution with they suggested changes to the initial digits, but for the sake of explaining ...

If you look further you will note that a 2 could have gone there as that row had 12789 possibilities. Look further and you will see what happens. I hope this helps.

Filling in everything is fine, but tedious unless youre using an app or computer - too much using an eraser. But to me it becomes a totally different type of puzzle, much more visual but a lot less technical. Normal way you add possibilities, filling everything in you remove them. But obviously you will save time not going back and forth in most occations.

Thanks for amazing video, i have something on minute 7:30, when u were talking about no.6. I believe it should be written in R1,C8. Because 6 would be in the three bottoms squares in R1-R3, C4-C6. Since the 2 left squares in the same area are noted for 2 numbers 3&5. And there is a 6 in R8,C7.

The comments below your videos show how much your viewers enjoy your infectious enthusiasm and useful advice. Reunited with your trusty whiteboard, you are a tour de force. My own approach to solving is very much less systematic than yours, but I think it's a good thing that everyone finds his or her preferred way to deal with these puzzles.

I am sorry if I missed something but in 9:14 why did Robin added 2 into B7? I understand the logic behind A3 and A7 but not sure why he suddenly decided to add 2 into B7. Many thanks in advance >.
The only suggestion I can give is have another look at the video as well as the comments underneath. Whenever there is only 2 empty cells in a row col or blockt they become a matching pair.This is a very important technique to learn for advanced solving. I hpe I have answered your question. Robin

I learned to play on an app on my phone which has an auto fill feature for candidates. And I just realized i wasn't just being lazy but I am a moron. I can't tell you how often I would miss a pair in a row or box and take forever to find it because all the boxes were full.
Also if you are wondering no I would not use that from the start I would use it once I got through the opening phase where you fill in everything easy.
I already knew the xwing but wasn't sure if I could learn anything I may not know to look for and for some reason that newb thing stuck out lol.

I always look at what you are calling X-Wing as if a number forms a square then the numbers between get eliminated. It is (I think it is called the XY-Wing which involves more or less the same but over 3 rows and colums not necessarilty complete.
I use this more intuatively and I agree having to many candidates can be confusing so avoid it as long as possible. I like Matching Pairs btw.

There is actually some more powerful x-wings. In this puzzle the corners of the x-wing ended up in four different boxes, but it is also possible, though much more rare, that the corners end up in only two different boxes.
In that case you can not only remove marks in the rest of the rows/columns (depending on the direction, or type as it is called here) but also in the rest of the two boxes.

@@SudokuGuy It is the first time that I have heard the term "diagonal cross" used for the kind of x-wing in question, but it is exactly what I am talking about.
Per definition an x-wing is formed when a digit is restricted to the same two columns within two rows, or vice versa, and the diagonal cross fulfils that criterion so it is technically an x-wing.
In tutorial #18 the 4 in box 2 was already restricted by the given and marked 4s in box 1 and 3.
But if the 4 in column 2 was instead placed in e.g. R5C2, and R1C1 was blank, the 4s in row 2 would still be restricted to the same two cells in box 2, without being able to place or mark any 4s in box 1 and 3 that would affect box 2 directly, and it would still eliminate 4 from R1C5 and R3C5, not directly due to the x-wing, nor because there was were any placed, marked or given 4s in box 1 and 3 forcing it out of row 1 and 3 in box 2, but because the 4 were forced into box 2 in row 2.
The puzzle would must likely not have a unique solution with they suggested changes to the initial digits, but for the sake of explaining ...

At point 9.14 in the vid, how did you put a 2 in row 2 column 7, and not anywhere else in block 3 thanks
If you look further you will note that a 2 could have gone there as that row had 12789 possibilities. Look further and you will see what happens. I hope this helps.
