If alice was not on the edge of depression, i would agree with you. Did you talk with your brother about the closet? He should bring her to the dr and find her help (baby sitter or him taking few days off to take care of his wife for example).
And then discuss about the rest.
But it seems alice might be in depression herself. It could be dangerous for her and the children to put more pressure. If it is confirmed by a dr, that she is in depression, you should think about putting them outside. Would you do that if she had cancer or other illness? If not, dont do it. Talk to your brother and husband and try to find a temporary common ground and action plan until they find an organisation and support system and a new house.
