Electronic states in simple way

What are the electronic states in which an electron can exist? How the electrons in a molecule are exited by absorption of energy? This can be better explained with the term multiplicity. Based on the net spin of the electrons in molecular orbital, multiplicity can be defined as singlet, double and triplet states.
