For those interested, shiny Regieleki and Regidrago will be coming to Pokemon GO raids at the end of this month. I know we have a few trainers out there who want to use these Pokemon competitively!
I frequently find myself waking up wishing I was an Eruption Heatran caught in Pokemon Ranger Guardian Signs and transferred specifically through Pokemon Platinum into Pokemon Black through Black 2 through Pokemon Y then Pokemon Sun into Pokemon Ultra Sun. Soon after into Pokemon Shield then finally into Pokemon Violet to be brought on a team compete in the Yokohama 2023 World Championships.
Unfortunately, you cannot transfer Pokemon with moves they no longer get in gen 9... You'll have to settle to be an Eruption Heatran in gen 8 (though it wouldn't be legal in vgc)
As someone who's so far down the VGC rabbit hole, this was a great and refreshing video to watch since you didn't just yap about topics that have been covered to death already

genuinely think heatran is one of the most underrated legendaries, at least casually. Sick cry, cool typing, etc. It’s nice to see it’s pretty goated in competitive
This is something i was thinking the other day! VGC has for most years allowed you to use older pokemon you may have capture into the latest games! It's so cool how we've been able to use past pokemon truly builds another connection to them! A journey no better words needed!
Saw this on the recommend feed, really well put together video. Editing, engagement, and effort were all on peak levels. New subscriber, I'm already hoping to see you take off!
Great video, I think that this could be said to have started a few years earlier than the 2013 World championships. In fact all the way back in the third generation games, the way to obtain nearly any competitively optimal moveset required single-use TMs or once per save move tutors, as well as the Shadow purification moves. This meant that obtaining for example Self-destruct Snorlax and Self-destruct Mewtwo (two key meta threats) would require two *complete* playthroughs of Pokemon XD. Not just beating the first 1/2 of the game, you had to get through the entire thing. That's without even getting into the implausibility of obtaining perfect IVs + correct natures back then. This issue continued into generation 4 and 5, with not only Eruption Heatran, but also Follow Me Magmar/Electabuzz , Helping Hand Togekiss (in gen IV) and the aforementioned Self-destruct Snorlax being notable examples. Not only demanding expensive hardware but also unbelievable amounts of time. It is no wonder really that so many competitors resorted to hacking back then, as there was realistically no other way to have an optimal team.
@@oopsgtg Incredibly well-thought-out reply! I completely agree, there’s a strong argument that TPC laid the groundwork for this interconnectivity goal as far back as the early 2000s. It’s a fascinating angle on a piece of competitive Pokémon history.
@@PokeProfessorJosh I will be surprised if you don't shoot up in sub counts. The edits were clean and examples were concise. Really hope to see you get big soon man. All we can do is wish our comments give you more motivation to keep grinding.
That comment about the tournaments is 100% true. Even if I didn't compete I would just spend all weekend at NAIC every single year cause it was a place I felt home at. Then they decided ti no longer have naic in ohio and the trip was too far to make 😢
I totally get that, there’s something special about the energy at in person events, even as a spectator. Here’s hoping it finds its way back to you in Ohio someday!
It feels so validating to have people talk about this as soon as TPCI announced the rule said I knew that people would have opinions on it for years to come
I would argue that the game inter connectivity rabbit whole gets even deeper why you think about the Follow Me Magmas that that Sejun Park used in the 2013 world championship. It uniquely (at the time) was able use follow me but only because in Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness shadow pokemon had access to moves that pokemon of the same species could not learn normally. So in order to have the pokemon that he needed on his team he would have had two transfer that magmas from XD to a gen 3 game, then to gen 4 and then finally to gen five. These day magmas can now use follow me naturally but it’s crazy to think that back in the day you had to jump trough insane hoops just to get a specific move on a pokemon!
Absolutely! I saw that too. Someone also pointed out self-destruct Snorlax and Mewtwo fit into this conversation too. TPC really has been intertwining their IPs for ages, haven't they?
Wow that was a really well made and interesting video. I somewhat disagree with the level of intent by Gamefreak (I think for a long time they kind of just took it for granted that competetive players hack their pokemon) but I love the end message and I also think that it is better that there are more legal ways to build teams. On that note: PLEEEEAAAASE GAMEFREAK, JUST ADD A 0 IV BOTTLE CAP
That’s a very fair perspective! It’s tricky to pinpoint intent and how much it factors into the equation. But honestly, I’d trade all those answers for a "rusty" Bottle Cap any day! Haha
prof. idk if it's something you would cover but would be possible to make a video about the correct ways to rewatch a VoD like a showdown replay and learn from them?
@@M1guelEsh That’s actually something I’ve thought about doing! I’ve got a few projects going right now, but I might revisit the idea later and see if I can make it worth everyone’s time.
"More legal ways to capture Pokemon is a good thing" I agree, which is why I'm so wary of this design philosophy. It COULD be used to increase availability, but it could also be used to force you to buy every game they release if you want to stay competitive. Put uniquely powerful Pokemon in the side games and now players HAVE to engage with them, even if the game sucks. It can even happen by accident. I don't think the person who put Eruption Heatran in Pokemon Ranger was thinking about the competitive ramifications. Of course, this really only affects the people at the bottom. The top players have enough clout and connections to just ask someone else to help them out. You think Wolfey personally caught all his pokemon? The established battlers with teams of support will be fine. Everyone else is better served by just hacking them in. That's the actual solution. Make hacking legal.
@@brocksteele7475 I definitely don’t think anyone would argue that being a prominent figure in the community doesn’t come with perks, and if people want to share their Pokemon, that’s totally fine. I do agree with your point though, it can be way too hard for the average player to get the strongest Pokemon. I really appreciate the community around Pokemon GO and in-game trading, which is what I wanted to highlight at the end. Hopefully, we’ll see better tools for customizing stats in the future!
I had that heatran transferred to sv, what a shame when i noticed it didn't have eruption. Same thing from an event arceus that knew judgmenet, spacial rend, roar of time and shadow force. Can't have unique pokemon anymore ig.
You could interpret the situation as a triumph of cross-marketing and interactivity between sister products in a franchise. Or as a disingenuous web of inconvenience meant to gate competitive fairness behind a paywall of unnecessary purchases and countless hours of menial grinding. It’s a matter of perspective but if you truly examine the scale of how many high level VGC players utilize “genned” Pokémon, it’s clear which opinion is more popular.

Sorry but I completely utterly disagree, having to jump through several fire hoops just to build your team shouldn't be part of the competitive aspect. I argue that instead of this whole complex system there should be a box editor that works like Showdown does, it really should be that fast and simple for a person to hop into the battle, the only negative aspect of this I see is the world building aspect of the games but I'm sure that if we think about it for more than 15 minutes we can come up with a decent excuse to make this feature lore friendly.
