Ford 1700 Tractor Jumpy Hydraulics - Fixed by Changing Hydraulic Oil and Filter?

  • This video shows the hydraulic system symptoms that a Ford 1700 tractor is demonstrating, which include bouncing of the 3 point hitch and loader for certain functions. In seeking to address the issue, I began by changing the hydraulic oil and cleaning the internal filter screen, which is shown in this video.
If you have a Ford 1700 and complete a hydraulic oil change, make sure you open all the drain plugs! The manual indicates 2 drain plugs, but on 4 wheel drive Ford 1700 tractors, there are actually 3!
Don't attempt this without getting new o-rings for the suction line and a new gasket for the filter mount.

Your issue is the hydraulic piston oring under the 3pt hitch cover. The 3pt and loader work off the same pump. Your hydraulic 3pt cylinder is leaking down then your draft control is kicking in and raising it back up to the correct level. That process is causing your jumping. That constant high and low preasure in the hydraulic system is causing your loader to jump while using the 3pt hitch.

Thank you for sharing. I have the same issue with mine to a lesser extent. You saved me the expense and effort with your video. Ford 1700 4 X 4 tractors with the 770 loaders are great little work horses

It’s a beast for a small tractor, but I work it hard and it is showing it’s age with issues like this. It has gotten worse since I filmed this video. Unless running at higher rpm, it won’t lift the brush hog any more than a few inches off the ground. It does better when cold than hot.

Great video, very thorough. My 1700 is doing the same thing.

I have been searching for a transmission dipstick for my Shibaura sd2200 ... my understanding that it's basically the same? Would you mind taking a picture of yours next to a tape measure so i can try to fabricate one?

Not sure if the SD2200 is the same. I think it has a different engine for sure. Not sure about the transmission and rear end, which is all one reservoir. My engine is model LE-892 and it’s a 12 speed transmission. The dipstick is 8-3/16 inches from the base of threads to the tip.

Nice video, whats a good price for a 1700 with backhoe, 1400 hours, thanks

Depends on condition and whether or not the backhoe is factory or aftermarket, 4wd or not, etc. If it has been used regularly (even just 10-20 hrs per yr) that’s better than if it’s been sitting for years. I can only guess, which would be around $10k for a running machine. Try searching for listings of recent sales to get an idea. Tractor House is often a good resource. Pricing on similar tractors of the same vintage from other brands are also a good reference comparison.

My 2110 Ford 3pt hitch has been dropping the last few years. I just bought the lift cylinder o-ring And plastic ring. I'm betting I have the same problem.
